Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we start a new game in our series on independent games with 2004's Cave Story. Keez maakte verder een doldwaze bezorg-tocht in Deliver at all Costs en kwam diepgang tegen in onverwachte hoek.
For our big 150th episode celebration we have...a regular episode. Our 5 year anniversary is coming up so maybe we'll do something special for that. But for this one - we're taking a deep dive into indie darling Outer Wilds! If you've seen this game mentioned online it usually comes with a word of caution to go in as blind as possible - and we'd agree! For the most part. We start off the conversation with our experience getting into the game, what we wish we had known before we started, and how we would describe it in as spoiler free terms as possible. After that, we shift gears into heavy spoilers talking about most key areas of the game, places where we got stuck, our interpretation of the story, and then blowing the doors off with details about the very end of the journey. If you're remotely interested in playing this game I would certainly recommend hitting pause once we give the spoiler warning and give it a go! And if you're an Outer Wilds veteran, then I hope you enjoy our stories of fumbling around through space while scratching our heads. So with that, grab you space suit and get ready to explore the unknown, with our deep dive on Outer Wilds!

Our guest Alex Beachum turned his thesis project into the mind-bending smash Outer Wilds. Inspired by greats such as Zelda and Antichamber, it blazed new ground by having a nonviolent (though definitely mortal) player. We discuss emotional prototypes, four distinct mysteries and the IGF - this week!Highlights[00:00:30] Emotional Prototyping: Designing with Feeling Alex Beachum discusses the idea of building an emotional prototype for a game, capturing the vibe before mechanics—like roasting marshmallows as the sun explodes. This became the emotional core of Outer Wilds. [00:17:30] The Origin of the Supernova Mechanic: The moment that inspired the iconic supernova loop in Outer Wilds—watching planets explode in slow motion—originated as a student prototype focused on ambiance and inevitability. [00:09:00] Building a Space Game Without Combat: Alex wanted to make a space exploration game without combat, inspired by Apollo 13 and 2001: A Space Odyssey. The idea was pure exploration—“not to conquer, just to understand.” [00:10:30] How ‘Outer Wilds' Was Almost a Roguelike Originally envisioned as a roguelike with randomized elements, Outer Wilds shifted to a fixed solar system with a time loop to better serve its story and design goals. [00:08:00] Zelda, Myst, and the Indie Inspirations Behind Outer Wilds: Beachum references Zelda, Myst, and Antichamber as key influences. The design philosophy emphasized knowledge as power, like discovering rules you could've used all along. [00:53:00] The Ship Log: Making Mystery Manageable: Alex explains the design of the ship log, which breaks the story into four “curiosity webs” so players can uncover the mystery in any order. A masterclass in open-world narrative structure. [00:39:00] From Stop Motion to Indie Stardom: Alex recounts how his childhood love of stop-motion and magic tricks evolved into a passion for visual storytelling and game design, eventually leading to Outer Wilds. [00:42:30] Working with Family: Sibling Storytelling: Alex collaborated with his sister Kelsey Beachum, the writer of Outer Wilds, on the narrative. Their sibling dynamic added cohesion to the game's emotional and story depth.Thank you for listening to our podcast all about videogames and the amazing people who bring them to life!Hosted by Alexander Seropian and Aaron MarroquinFind us at www.thefourthcurtain.com Join our Patreon for early, ad-free episodes plus bonus content at https://patreon.com/FourthCurtain Come join the conversation at https://discord.gg/KWeGE4xHfeVideos available at https://www.youtube.com/@thefourthcurtainFollow us on twitter: @fourthcurtainEdited and mastered at https://noise-floor.com Audio Editor: Bryen HensleyVideo Editor: Sarkis GrigorianProducer: Shanglan (May) LiArt: Paul RusselCommunity Manager: Doug ZartmanFeaturing Liberation by 505
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series of series on the independent games of the last couple of decades, starting with 2012's Fez. We set the game in its time, talk a bit about its precedents and the landscape of independent games in the middle of that console generation. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Single-digit cubes Issues covered: our real plan or lack thereof, early games, the indie revolution, the influences back and forth, the pressure of the space we're in, a highly visible indie, games from that year, sequels vs the different stuff in the indies, democratization of the market, the console cycle, always online fiasco, getting on the Steam store, opening console store fronts to independents, limitations, the broadband market and bandwidth costs, the publicity on the store, low cost of goods, continuing power of retail, a two dimensional puzzle game in a three dimensional world, charm, great music and MIDI with an unsettling feel, rotating the world, rebooting the game, achieving the effect without perspective, the Trixel engine, having a hard time getting it, trusting the game, having a new lens on a game, taking the time to infuse the whole experience, team sizes, telling a different story with an existing language, having fewer people to get on board, independent publishers and producers, influences, glitch aesthetics, map language, climbing on the sides of things, stopping time while the world rotates, how the editor might work, games from the past, CONFIG.SYS (dang it, could not remember), skipping over generations. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Will Wright, Indie Game: The Movie, Polytron, Phil Fish, Dishonored, Halo 4, AW American Nightmare, X-COM, Firaxis, Mass Effect 3, Forza Horizon, Far Cry (series), Counterstrike: Go, Assassin's Creed 3, Borderlands 2, Diablo III, Dragon's Dogma, Journey, The Walking Dead, Telltale Games, FTL, Spelunky, Papo y Yo, Bastion, Super Hexagon, Terry Cavanaugh, Supergiant, Hades, Transistor, UFO 50, Derek Yu, That Game Company, Sky, Sony, PlayStation, Microsoft, Steam, XBLA, Braid, Super Meat Boy, Nintendo, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Zelda (series), Super Mario (series), Metroid (series), Outer Wilds, The Sixth Sense (obliquely), Renaud Bedard, Trapdoor, Penny Arcade, blitworks, Tetris, Axiom Verge, Tron, Out of this World, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Super Mario 3D Land, Minecraft, Sam, Interstate '76, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. "It's the kind of thing that makes you glad you stopped and smelled the pine trees along the way, you know?"Rick is joined by Josh (Still Loading Podcast) once again to reach the end of 2019's Outer Wilds. The profundity offered by this game really snuck up on us, and the ending offers a feast of ideas and discussion points with which beautiful conversation can be had. Needless to say, we both love this game. "The pain of your absence is sharp and haunting, and I would give anything not to know it; anything but never knowing you at all (which would be worse)."The critical analysis of Outer Wilds continues this week as Rick and Josh (Still Loading Podcast) continue through the solar system! In this episode, Giant's Deep, Ember Twin, Brittle Hollow, and the Interloper are explored at length, and insight is gained into the Nomai - how they lived, what they valued, and their untimely fate. This ended up being a terrific discussion that spans not only the game, but how we can extract the lessons into our own lives. "Seems like only yesterday you joined the space program, and suddenly here you are, leaving on your first solo voyage."This week, Rick is joined by Josh (Still Loading Podcast) to begin a three-part analysis on Outer Wilds, a 2019 adventure game that captivated audiences (and me) with creativity and heart. Taking the role of The Hatchling, players explore a vast - and occasionally hostile - galaxy to gather data on the Nomai, an ancient race that disappeared under unclear circumstances. Mysteries abound, and with themes encompassing existentialism, religion, science, and community, Outer Wilds goes places players may not expect. We're both thrilled to be talking about this game. Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're shorthanded once again, but a little long-winded nevertheless, as John & Kevin get pretty deep into a handful a various gaming goodies... Kevin kicks things off with a trio of mobile games that he's been (mostly) enjoying lately, even if he's playing one of them on PC — while John briefly jumps at an opportunity to give a quick update on his time with Outer Wilds. It's all things Metroid(vania) after that, as we've both been picking up a number of games starring the one and only Samus Aran — as well revisiting an amazing experimental mini metroidvania from the one and only Daniel Linssen. "Is the whole universe a computer?", ask Jack Copeland, Mark Sprevak, and Oron Shagrir in chapter 41 of the book The Turing Guide. They split this question in two, first asking whether the universe itself is a computer, then whether the universe could even be computed. These are lofty, unanswerable questions, sure, but they encroach on our territory — philosophy, automata, nonsense. So, in our usual reverent style and with attentive pacing, the three of us explore the paper, the questions, the answers they choose to highlight, and even share a few perfectly reasonable answers of our own. Hey all, thanks for joining us along this journey for the last 9 years. We stared Men Of Low Moral Fiber when I was 30 years old and I just turned 39, so all of my 30s were consumed with recording MOLMF episodes, editing them, publishing, planning, scheduling, and playing the actual MOLMF games. It was exhausting and exhilarating and I'll never forget it...aside from all of the stuff I forgot along the way. The whole idea was to do this as a community, focus on relationships, and have a little fun along the way as an excuse to stay in touch. It was one a lovely time full of learning, hilarity, entertaining moments, frustrating puzzles, obscene duck and chicken censors, lots of stupid musical segments—complete with equally stupid musical theme songs, and an insightful guest or two along the way. All in all we covered 90 full game episodes, plus 39 Side Quests, holiday episodes, and random interviews and shorts along the way. If you were one of the special people who celebrated these classic games along with us, we thank you. It's been real, but now we're closing up shop. Don't worry though, I'll be playing Outer Wilds, Inscryption, and Balatro FOREVER...just not recording episodes about them. Or at least not publishing them. We'll miss you all. Now that the games and episodes are over, I hope we can still stay in touch. —Ben Of Low Moral Fiber (Corrigan and Jason say goodbye too)
