Overdrive – Cars, Transport & Culture Originally broadcast: 14 June 2025 Host: David Brown | Guest: Paul Murrell (SeniorDriverAus.com) In this episode of Overdrive, we explore the intersection of technology, culture, and controversy in the transport world. From electric vehicle supply chains to self-driving cars and tragic consequences of urban mobility experiments, we cover it all. The show blends analysis, interviews, and a dose of humour to make sense of the evolving car and transport landscape. Key Segments and Topics Covered: 1. News Headlines and Industry Trends We begin with a look at China's suspension of key rare earth exports, which has forced companies like Ford to pause production in the U.S. The discussion examines Australia's opportunity and challenges in filling the gap, particularly around local skills shortages in metallurgy and refining. 2. Commercial Driver Health Reforms Paul and David unpack a new discussion paper from the National Transport Commission, aimed at improving health screening for commercial drivers. The goal is to detect high-risk conditions—like sleep apnea—before they cause accidents, using evidence-based protocols and fleet-monitoring technology. 3. Artificial Intelligence in Road Safety Two firms are pushing AI into different lanes of vehicle safety. Nauto supports human drivers with real-time warnings based on driver behaviour, while Imagry is developing fully autonomous, map-free driving. We contrast the philosophical and practical implications of both approaches. 4. Vehicle Ruggedness and Robotic Testing Ford's Ranger undergoes brutal durability testing at Victoria's You Yangs proving ground using robotic test drivers—highlighting the importance of consistency and safety in off-road evaluation. The discussion also references how electric powertrains could enhance off-road capability. 5. E-scooter Fatality and Policy Response in Perth A tragic incident involving a pedestrian killed by a drunk e-scooter rider has led to an indefinite suspension of Perth's e-scooter hire program. Paul and David discuss the broader implications of poor regulation, excessive speeds, and rising injury statistics across Australia. 6. The Rapid Rise of Waymo in San Francisco Self-driving car company Waymo now accounts for 27% of San Francisco's rideshare market. We explore why consistency, comfort, and reduced crash rates are contributing to faster-than-expected adoption of autonomous vehicles, despite their higher cost compared to traditional rideshare options. 7. Car Myths Debunked From battery longevity and fuel economy to aerodynamics and fire risk in EVs, the team breaks down popular car myths. Key points include: Car batteries can last well beyond five years with proper maintenance. Smaller engines aren't always more fuel-efficient in real-world driving. EVs are statistically less likely to catch fire than petrol vehicles, but fires are harder to extinguish. 8. Spotlight: Giotto Bizzarrini We dive into the remarkable story of Giotto Bizzarrini, a brilliant but overlooked automotive engineer who worked with Ferrari, Lamborghini, and others before creating his own exotic car marque. The discussion includes a recent revival of his 5300 GT Strada and the challenges of branding in the automotive world. 9. Road Test: 2025 Mitsubishi Triton GLS We test the latest Mitsubishi Triton dual cab ute and assess its appeal to both tradies and families. Topics include: Toughness and payload capability Security and lockable tray cover Interior simplicity vs. tech complexity Safety features and lane assist quirks Parking challenges due to size We also touch on the marketing impact of using Russell Coight in ads, and how humour wears thin over time. On average, there are 73 work-related deaths in New Zealand every single year. Relative to the number of people in employment, the New Zealand workplace fatality rate is double that of Australia, and it hasn't shifted in many, many years. More road cones have not made a difference. The New Zealand rate is similar to the rate the UK experienced back in the 1980s. The gap between New Zealand and Australia is consistent across most industries and occupations. It's not like we've got one that is more dangerous than any other, which is why it's throwing these figures out. It's consistent across industries and occupations. Looking at the construction industry, the New Zealand fatality rate is 4.41 workers every 100,000 compared to 2.93 workers in every 100,000. The workplace injury rates tell a similar story. New Zealand injury rates, as reported by ACC have improved over time, however the Australian rate is 25% lower, the UK 45% lower. Why? Why are we so much worse than other countries we should be able to compare ourselves with? Brooke van Velden, the Minister for Workplace Safety, says we're overregulated. That there are too many rules and the fear of prosecution is making workplaces less safe. “We're changing the focus of worker health and safety to focusing on the critical risks, those things that can cause deaths and serious injury, and at the same time, I'm changing the focus of WorkSafe to care about deaths and serious injury as well and not sweating the small stuff because we've had a culture of too much over compliance, ticking all the boxes, trying to get all of the paperwork done, rather than focusing on, do I actually do anything in my workplace that could cause death or serious injury? And are we doing that correctly? “So I'm saying to everybody out there, let's not sweat the small stuff. Let's focus on those deaths and serious injury activities and let's have WorkSafe going on site providing more upfront guidance so that they're here to help rather than having too much of the stick.” Who was it that said there are no more chilling words than “hi, we're from the government. We're here to help”? It was an American, I'm sure. Is there going to be able to be a change of emphasis? If all of a sudden, Workplace Safety says, ‘hey, we're here to help. We're here to help you, as the employer, make the workplace safer'. Are we able to pivot away from thinking ‘if Health and Safety come in here, they're going to find all sorts of nitpicky things and make my life misery', to ‘might ring Workplace Health and Safety and see how they can help me'. It's going to take a big mind shift. Mike said this morning he thought there were too many rules and there probably are for people who are educated, who have choices about what they do, who have choices about where they work. For people who don't have the luxury of telling a boss to stick it if they're asked to do something they think is really dangerous, or to do something with equipment they think is dangerous, rules are required. But they need to be clear, they need to be effective and if they're not working, do away with them. And I think most importantly, employees need to be on board with them. The number of times I've had employers ring in and tell me that as required by law, they bring in the safety gear, they instruct the workers to wear it, they do spot cheques to ensure the workers are wearing it, and the workers are not wearing it. They say that the goggles mist up. That the harnesses mean that they can't rely on their own wits to go about the building, and they'd rather risk death than rely on their own sense of balance. The employees don't seem to value their lives in some cases. You've got to get employees on board as well. There has to be a culture of safety, that workers have to value themselves and employers have to value their workers. And you can't regulate for that. You can't red cone that. I tend to agree that too many rules just mean the important ones get lost in the noise. Too many road cones and you don't know when it's dangerous and when it's not. But our work-related deaths are appalling. And they've been appalling for a very, very long time. How do we fix it? It's only those workers in dangerous occupations, mainly men, and the bosses in those dangerous occupations that can tell us. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this deeply personal and powerful episode of Construction Safety Perspectives, host Bob Kunz speaks with Rena Harrington — a mother whose world changed forever on January 18, 2018, when her 27-year-old son, Justin, was killed in a workplace accident while working on a residential construction site in Gloucester, Massachusetts.Rena shares the emotional story of Justin's life, his passion for heavy equipment and construction work, and the troubling safety concerns he voiced just days before the accident. She takes listeners through the harrowing timeline of being notified — not by police at her door, but through a series of calls while at work — and how her family found out about his death through a news article being shared on Facebook before official confirmation.Through grief, heartbreak, and unimaginable loss, Rena has become a powerful advocate for change. Today, she is an active voice within the United Support & Memorial for Workplace Fatalities (USMWF) — a national nonprofit organization that supports families affected by preventable workplace deaths and helps them navigate the difficult process of investigations, OSHA proceedings, and workers' compensation. In this episode, Rena speaks candidly about: • The critical safety oversights on Justin's job site • How young workers often aren't aware of their rights or options • Gaps in how employers handle emergency contact protocols • The emotional toll of workplace loss and the lack of accountability many families face • Her ongoing legislative work in Massachusetts to strengthen workers' comp funeral benefits and hold small employers to safer standards • And how she found strength and healing by helping other families through USMWFThis episode is not just a tribute to Justin — it's a call to action for employers, regulators, and construction professionals to ensure that no other family experiences what Rena has.To learn more about USMWF or to connect with someone for support after a workplace fatality, visit: https://usmwf.orgThe organization provides emotional support, access to resources, and helps families share their stories to raise awareness and push for real safety reform.

Are you enjoying this? Are you not? Tell us what to do more of, and what you'd like to hear less of. The Reykjavík Grapevine's Iceland Roundup brings you the top news with a healthy dash of local perspective. In this episode, Grapevine publisher Jón Trausti Sigurðarson is joined by Heimildin journalist Aðalsteinn Kjartansson and Grapevine friend and contributor Sindri Eldon to discuss the stories making headlines in recent weeks. On the docket this week:✨ A recent program by the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service sheds light on the capture and export of orcas in the 1970s and 1980s. The profits from this trade helped finance the only aquarium ever operated in Iceland—and yes, this is how Keiko (of Free Willy fame) was captured.✨ Icelanders often pronounce “V” and “W” the same way.✨ A tragic rockfall accident occurred last week in south Iceland, near Eyjafjallajökull.✨ We talk about the former Minister of Infrastructure's fingers—for no particular reason.✨ A man was arrested in the small town of Raufarhöfn for stealing a car and driving it while drunk and high. We also discuss a custom 1970s Cadillac that can be found in the same town.✨ Nude tourists in Icelandic hot springs. Occasionally a thing.✨ An American transgender woman was denied asylum in Iceland this week. We explore the hypocrisy of the decision, especially given that Iceland has issued travel warnings for transgender individuals traveling to the U.S.✨ In that context, we discuss how, under the Patriot Act, it has been legal since 2014 for U.S. authorities to detain American citizens on American soil—without due process—if suspected of aiding “the enemy” in the war on terror. We cover recent detentions of foreign travelers and Green Card holders.✨ And finally, Iceland faces the same U.S. tariff rates as... penguins. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------SHOW SUPPORTSupport the Grapevine's reporting by becoming a member of our High Five Club: https://steadyhq.com/en/rvkgrapevine/You can also support the Grapevine by shopping in our online store: https://shop.grapevine.is------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is a Reykjavík Grapevine podcast. The Reykjavík Grapevine is a free alternative magazine in English published 18 times per year, biweekly during the spring and summer, and monthly during the autumn and winter. It's time for a very special episode! Our favourite foe, Mike, purchased a Ko-Fi request for an on-mic murder mystery and we were happy to oblige. Matt, Mike and Detective Jamie (daughter of Sherlock Holmes) are all extras in the upcoming sci-fi horror film Blood Red Planet. But when the star, Jacob Stone, is discovered dead in his trailer, our trio must work together to find out who killed him and why! In a feat of transformative acting (i.e. cycling between three different accents) Cass plays every witness in the case. Was it the director? The co-stars? Someone on the crew? Or the sinister craft services manager who Matt, Mike and Jamie are sure has an eyepatch and a hairless cat? This is an original murder mystery written by Cassandra Tse. The format is ripped off shamelessly from the wonderful podcast Solve This Murder. If you liked this episode, donate to our Ko-Fi for more! If you didn't like it, don't worry – we'll be returning to Joliewood next episode.

H5N1 bird flu is still spreading across farms in the USA and this week claimed its first human life in North America - an elderly patient in Louisiana infected by backyard poultry. But last week, Sonja Olsen, Associate Director for Preparedness and Response in the CDC's flu division, and her colleague Shikha Garg, published new analysis in the New England Journal of Medicine summarizing the human cases and epidemiology so far. A lab study underscoring a suspected link between the virus responsible for cold sores, and Alzheimers, the most common form of dementia, has been published in Science Signalling this week. The study, by Dana Cairns of Tufts University, looks at whether repetitive brain trauma – another risk factor - adds to the evidence that latent herpes simplex can be involved. Song Lin, a chemist at Cornell University who has won prizes for pioneering the use of electrical currents to drive chemical reactions rather than heat, has teamed up with Cornell micro engineer Paul McEuen to power up a new kind of chemistry and invent another kind of SPECS – an acronym for Small Photoelectronics for Electrochemical Synthesis. The first fatal HondaJet accident just occurred. Greg Feith and John Goglia go over the known facts of the air crash in Mesa, Arizona on November 5. The jet ran off the runway and struck a car on a nearby road, killing the driver and four of the five people on board the jet. They draw similarities with a 2014 takeoff accident involving a Gulfstream jet near Boston. Poor preflight preparation may be the biggest contributor to this deadly event. Greg and John share the simple tests and steps that can be the difference between a successful and a fatal flight. Greg and John also discuss Greg's recent recognition from the National Aeronautic Association. Greg was named a 2023 Distinguished Statesmen of Aviation.Greg and John finished the episode with a discussion of the show's newest advertiser, Piston Power, and how their various options for managing routine and non-routine repairs may benefit an aircraft owner. They also welcome a new sponsor - PistonPower™.
