Fancy setting us a gaming challenge? Get in touch here!In this episode of The Gaming Blender, Matt and Scott discuss the concept of an open-world physics-based crafting game. They imagine a game where players take on the role of an architect or mason in different historical eras, tasked with building grand structures using basic materials and techniques. The game would require players to navigate the laws of physics and overcome challenges specific to each structure. They also discuss the idea of gamifying the learning process by incorporating RPG elements and allowing players to learn different building techniques. The replayability of the game is discussed, with the suggestion of adding free DLC to introduce new buildings and challenges. Builders of Divinity is an open-world game where players take on the role of gods of construction. The game is set in a world where the human race lives for a certain period of time with its gods, and when civilization reaches its end, the world resets and new gods are born. Players play as Barry/Susan, a newly appointed god of construction, who must learn on the job by building things for the human race. However, they soon discover that the ancient gods are trying to break the cycle and come back to power. The game combines physics-based building mechanics, crafting, and an underdog story.00:00Introduction and Funny Sidebar00:57Memorable Moments on Stage03:03Discussion of Genre and Mechanics04:22Scott Leads the Creative Process05:57Genre: Open-World Physics-Based Crafting Game08:59Mechanics: Physics-Based and Crafting10:25Building Grand Structures in Historical Eras13:01Gamifying Learning and RPG Elements14:28The Protagonist as a God of Construction15:24Replayability and Free DLC16:01Introduction to the Concept of Building and Construction19:02Exploring the Narrative and Character Development21:11The Underdog Story and the Plot Twist22:07The Race Against Time and the Battle Against the Ancient Gods25:13Balancing Open-World Exploration and Plot Progression26:33The Importance of Gathering Materials and Unlocking Abilities27:21The Challenges of Mining and Sculpting Marble28:29Minimal Hand-Holding and the Tutorial Experience30:01Choosing a Captivating Title: Builders of DivinityThanks for listening and please leave us a review and subscribe if you enjoyed it. I have previously looked at replayability in board games and I must admit, I still can't put my finger on why a game like Chess, which has no variability and no randomness, is so hugely replayable and remains interesting even after dozens of plays, while other games with variable setup, different factions and a large amount of chance are sometimes boring after only a handful of plays. So let me grapple with this topic in yet another article. What if you entered an escape room where the choices are real and every decision you make causes ripples down the line of your adventure? Replayability is one of the hottest topics in the escape room world, and right now, no company showcases it better than Doors of Divergence in New York City. In Season 6, Episode 1 of REPOD, we chat with Christian Vernon and Zac MacKrell, the creators behind Doors of Divergence. They spill the secrets of their success, including their secret weapon when it comes to their immersive actors. They describe their games Heresy: 1898 and Madness: 1917 as "escape room meets immersive theater meets choose-your-own-adventure novel." We learn about how the branching narratives work in their shows. They talk about being surprised at the popularity of their achievement system "Chivo." Christian and Zac tell us how they got their start in the immersive worlds of themed restaurants and extreme zombie paintball. We also learn about their philosophy when it comes to onboarding and the magic circle. It's clear that these two creators have a wildly ambitious approach to designing their escape rooms in ways that empower their audience. Sadly, they have lost their venue and will have to shut down operations while they hunt for a new home. Doors will remain open through October 20, 2023, and I highly recommend you experience their special brand of madness while you can.   Timestamps & Full Show Notes   Episode Sponsors Thank you to our sponsors Morty, Buzzshot, and COGS:  Morty Morty is a free app for discovering, planning, tracking, and reviewing your escape rooms and other immersive social outings.  Morty News: Morty now features haunt attractions Morty for Android is here Special Badge for REPOD listeners: You can learn more at morty.app/REPOD to sign up and get a special badge for our listeners (works for existing users also).   Buzzshot Buzzshot is Escape Room Software, Powering Business Growth, Player Marketing, and improving the Customer Experience. Games from the Cellar

The panel tackles Ark Nova, the hottest game of 2022. Designed by Mathias Wigge, Ark Nova was published by Capstone Games in the US.  Episode Summary: In this episode, the panel explores the complexity of Ark Nova. We discuss our previous experiences playing the game, noting that Ark Nova is a heavy game that usually takes three to four hours to play. The decision space is mostly tactical rather than strategic. We discuss the game mechanics and our thoughts on the game's core concepts, concluding that it can be too complex for its own good. We also discuss the limitations of the game, such as the lack of direct competition between players, the lack of detail in the action cards, and the use of symbols which can be confusing. Finally, we discussed the amount of time needed to learn the game, with one participant suggesting it could take up to fifteen plays before mastering the game. Visit our website and join the conversation on Discord.   Chapters: (0:00:50) - Exploring the Complexity of Ark Nova (0:11:06) - Exploring the Miscues of Ark Nova (0:25:10) - So, Let's Build a Zoo?? (0:36:51) - The Search for a Story in Arc Nova   Chapter Summaries: (0:00:01) - Exploring the Complexity of Ark Nova (11 Minutes) In this episode, the panel discusses Ark Nova, the hottest game of 2022. They talk about their experience playing the game, noting that it is a heavy game that usually takes three to four hours to play, and it is mainly tactical rather than strategic. They discuss their impressions of the game, noting that while it is enjoyable in the moment, they often feel disappointed when they look back at the end. They also discuss the game mechanics and their thoughts on the game's complexity, concluding that it can be too complex for its own good.   (0:11:06) - Exploring the Miscues of Ark Nova (14 Minutes) Ark Nova is a game that contains a variety of nice components, including a variety of maps and animal cards. The conversation discusses the various elements of the game, including the lack of direct competition between players, the lack of detail in some of the action cards, and the use of symbols, which can be confusing. The panelists discuss the need to balance resources and the issue of player agency, which is limited by the available cards. They also discuss the puzzle-like nature of the game and the difficulty of distinguishing between some of the action cards, which could be improved with color coding.   (0:25:10) - So, Let's Build a Zoo?? (12 Minutes) The panel discusses the game's mechanics, theme, design decisions, strategies, and replayability. The conversation highlights the difficulty of Arc Nova and suggests that the complexity is not always a positive because it can be difficult to learn and master. The panel also discusses their opinions on the disconnect between the myriad of game mechanisms and the theme of building a zoo. The panel further discusses #BigDeckEnergy, and how a large deck of cards doesn't necessarily equate to depth or complexity. Replayability simply from limited exposure to a large pool of cards isn't true replayability. Finally, they discuss the amount of time needed to learn the game, with one participant suggesting that it could take up to fifteen plays before mastering the game.   (0:36:51) - The Search for a Story in Arc Nova (12 Minutes) The panel discussed their opinion of the Ark Nova. They discussed the lack of narrative, noting that when the game was finished, there was no real overarching story to tell. The animal cards (which Arc Nova should have put front and center, yet didn't) are largely only used for their icons and are mostly ignored once played. Also discussed was the art style of the board and tiles, noting that it is not inspiring or memorable. After playing the game, the panel expresses their appreciation for what the game was trying to accomplish but is ultimately ready to move on to another game. On this episode of The Middle School Mind podcast, we talk about one of our favorite games on the Xbox One, Gang Beasts. The game has multiple game modes for single and multiplayer local and online contests. The game has Jello-like characters punch and headbutt one another in a battle-royale where the goal is to throw your opponents off the level and be the last-man standing. There are different modes that have up to 8 players battling each other online. This is a game we can pick up for a quick best of 5 rounds series. We always laugh playing this game because of all the fun characters you can pick and the floppy movements can result in some awesome knockouts. Here's what we cover in this episode: We talk about the gameplay and where to get this game on Xbox. We talk about all the fun character costumes. We play a quick game and talk through the gameplay. It's a violent game, but it's like cartoon violence. Parents should review the game and see if it's suitable for their kids. Here's how Son rates Gang Beasts: 5/5 for Replayability 3/5 for Graphics 3/5 for Sound 4/5 for Gameplay Overall, Gang Beasts is 4.5/5 because it's fun, we laugh at the characters. It's a game you can pick up and play a round or two and relax over 15 to 20 minutes at a time. There's not a story mode or anything to think of. We want to hear from you! Please leave us a positive review and like and follow us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts or wherever you listen to your favorite podcast. We also want to hear from you, our listeners!
