Midwest Avenue was started back in my high school days with my Dad, Uncle, and Cousin as you heard about back on Episode #5. As that ended and I did various other forms of music. Last episode we ended with the Armed Forces Entertainment tour I did to Honduras and Colombia. When I got back I didn't play music, let alone touch a guitar for almost 2 years. When I did finally I ended up starting a band with some new members but still with my Dad Scott Phares on drums but kept the name of Midwest Avenue alive. Here you will hear me talk about the beginning of this new formation of Meagan Hettinger, James Hopper, Steve Farmer, Scott Phares, and Steve Vincent as I am in my car on the way to our reunion show (at this point we haven't played together in over 5 years). Kind of wild how it all works out.

At this point I had began recording every song I could on my own and releasing them and selling them at shows There wasn't an iTunes or Spotify at this moment. The closest thing to it was a website called Downloadpunk.net which would end up sponsoring my tours I did throughout Oklahoma, Indiana, Texas, Illinois, Louisiana, Tennessee, which I would sell these download cards. Looked like a credit card but you could buy the card then go home get on your computer and download the MP3 of whichever album card you bought. It was pretty cool, and to back up how I got the sponsorship was through an album feature I got on a website thats still going today absolutepunk.net but its called chorus.fm now as they've changed their brand with the times. Absolutepunk.net at the time was really the news source for anything punk rock, indie rock, emo, pop, anything unsigned really and that really helped me get some more eyes on my myspace page which then really exploded with over 80,000 followers and gaining over 10,000 plays per day. It was ABSOLUTELY MIND blowing. I remember all the messages and comments throughout the days and nights I would get and I would literrally stay up til 6am replying to each and every one. Engaging with anyone that had taken the time to listen to my music, and let alone taken the time to message me was extremely important to me. More important than sleep. I wanted to make sure that anyone that was investing 3 minutes into listening to even one song and shooting me a message that they felt valued and knew that I appreciated them. When I went on my first tour which was mainly alot of the main cities in Illinois (Springfield, Jacksonville, Champaign/Urbana, Bloomington, Quincy, Chicago, Chicago suburbs, Effingham, Alton/Godfrey, Edwardsville (at the SIUE campus Starbucks), and some other towns along the way to the major cities but when I was on that first tour I made a post on myspace, at the time it was known as a bulletin. In each city I'd usually arrive early and meet up with different people in these cities and towns to either grab lunch, get coffee, walk around their town, go on a drive and check out the local spots. My whole goal was to just enjoy life and give time to those that have given me theirs. Through that I really got to know tons of amazing people who I am so grateful for to this day. I remember on that first tour I was playing a show with a popular band at the time named This Providence that was signed to Fueled by Raymen Records which had the powerhouse bands Paramore and Fall Out Boy on their label as well. My best friend Matt who I traveled with a lot during this time frame was with me and we had a blast. It was one of those shows where I really kinda felt a little unprepared as a lot of the bands were amazing and here I was just one guy with a guitar, but it ended up working out and was a complete blast. I'll leave off here and next episode I'll be talking about my tour with my buddy I met over Myspace Joshua Aaron as well as a show in Argyle, Iowa.

After Abistarline kind of faded out, I continued to put on shows at the local YMCA building in Roodhouse. Continued playing acoustic sets at Due Gattis Coffee Shop in Jacksonville I remember my first show I played solo acoustic is was in Quincy IL at Mugshots Coffee Shop, it was a blast. I continued on with my acoustic shows since I didn't have a band I would book other local acts at the YMCA in Roodhouse as I connected with them over MYSPACE. Once I recorded my first actual acoustic album Had the silliest name ever "Playing with Monkeys" I guess I thought I was funny or something. From that initial album which was a home studio recording in my grandparents spare bedroom I got my first taste of the business of the music business. With the traction the songs I had up on myspace began to grow to about 50-100 plays per day I was offered a clothing sponsorship which I agreed to with Steez Clothing which is still around today. It lasted a year but the clothes were sweet as well as the promotion. I had a very special friend in Shannon Steele at the time that was super supportive of all things I was in musically from The Big City to Midwest Avenue She was a huge part to what would come. She had a video camera and she put on a secret show at her house with all people from our hometown area that came out to the local shows and I played an acoustic set in her living room. It was a complete blast. It was around that time I really felt like I had something to offer musically And could make a career out of this for the long term, because thats all i've really ever wanted to do. Along with putting on shows at the local YMCA, playing some local shows in Jacksonville, IL and Springfield, IL- I also put on shows in White Hall which was 3 miles from Roodhouse at the Seton Hall. which was owned by a church in my hometown. It was at that point I decided that I was going to go all in on Myspace which was starting to gain some major popularity. I would go on to record a few more albums in my grandparents spare bedroom which I will be talking about on the next episode.
