Patrick tackles a lively question about a secret Friday church wedding followed by a staged Saturday ceremony, triggering a flood of listener stories and questions on sacramental law, honesty, and what truly counts in Catholic marriage. Mixed with candid advice, Patrick walks through challenges like destination weddings, annulments, and outdoor ceremonies, weaving in personal anecdotes and gentle humor. Listeners find themselves reflecting on where real meaning lies: put God at the center, and the rest takes shape, even if the reception takes place at a Texaco station. Patrick shares emails in regards to the marriage topics from the end of the last hour (00:35) Pete - This is typical of today for people not getting married in the Church. This upsets me. What more can you ask for than God's blessing? (11:43) John - My wife and I got married during Covid and couldn't have a party for a year. I agree with Patrick. (13:59) Frank - How did the audience of Jesus's time understand Jesus's use of the word 'Church'? (18:21) Cindy - Why can't we have outdoor masses or weddings? (25:18) Gino - How do we understand the concept of having a 'scapegoat' for animal sacrifice in the Old Testament? (29:25) Aaron - Why don't people scrutinize their marriage to the same degree the annulment process does? Chevron has been awarded $220 Million in the Ecuadoran Amazon pollution case. The award comes from the Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) system, part of Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration. From 1964-1992, Texaco polluted thousands of acres of Amazonian rainforest and poisoned its residents. In 1993, those residents took Texaco to court. In 2001, Chevron acquired Texaco and took its debts (including the billions it owes Amazonian residents). In 2011, an Ecuadoran court awarded the residents $9.5 billion in damages for the pollution and poisoning. Since then, Chevron has waged a legal and public relations against the Indigenous people of the Amazon and their lawyers. This award is part of a 16 year process through the ISDS system. In our latest, Scott talks with Paul Paz y Mino (@paulpaz.bsky.social) about Chevron's history in Ecuador and this case. April 20, 1999 changed everything we thought we understood about safety, about schools, and about the capacity for violence within our own communities. In this episode of The Guilty Files, we take a comprehensive and unflinching look at the Columbine High School massacre, cutting through decades of misinformation to separate fact from myth in one of the most misunderstood crimes in American history. Nearly everything the public believes about Columbine has been shaped by early media errors, cultural panic, and narratives that simply do not hold up under scrutiny. The so-called Trenchcoat Mafia was never a factor. The idea that Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold targeted jocks or Christians has been largely debunked. The widely circulated story that Cassie Bernall affirmed her faith moments before her death did not occur as it was later told. And perhaps most critically, Columbine was never intended to be a traditional school shooting. It was designed as a mass bombing meant to collapse the cafeteria and kill hundreds, potentially surpassing the Oklahoma City bombing as the deadliest act of domestic terrorism in U.S. history. The shooting was a contingency plan, carried out only after the bombs failed to detonate. This episode traces the full arc of the crime from beginning to end. We examine the backgrounds of both perpetrators not to glorify them or grant the infamy they sought, but to understand the warning signs that were missed and the systems that failed. Eric Harris, a military child who moved frequently before settling in Littleton, Colorado, maintained a website filled with threats and bomb-making instructions that were known to authorities and never acted upon.Dylan Klebold, a gifted local student, struggled with severe depression and suicidal ideation that was documented in private journals but went unrecognized until after the attack. We follow the eleven months of planning that led up to April 20, including the alarming ease with which two teenagers obtained four firearms and constructed ninety-nine explosive devices. We examine the gun show loophole that allowed an eighteen-year-old honors student to purchase weapons for her underage friends, along with the illegal sale of a TEC-DC9 handgun by a twenty-two-year-old seeking quick money. At the center of the episode is a minute-by-minute reconstruction of the day itself, built from the official Jefferson County Sheriff's Office timeline, witness testimony, surveillance footage, and forensic evidence. From Eric Harris purchasing propane tanks at a Texaco station that morning to the forty-nine minutes of violence that left fourteen people dead and twenty-four wounded, we document exactly what happened and when. But this episode does what too much coverage of mass violence fails to do. It centers the victims. Rachel Scott, whose writings on compassion inspired the global movement Rachel's Challenge. Daniel Rohrbough, a fifteen-year-old freshman who never had a chance to escape.  Dave Sanders, the beloved teacher and coach who saved more than a hundred students before being shot and left to bleed to death for over four hours while help failed to reach him. Kyle Velasquez, Steven Curnow, Cassie Bernall, Isaiah Shoels, Matthew Kechter, Lauren Townsend, John Tomlin, Kelly Fleming, Daniel Mauser, and Corey DePooter. Each had a future, a family, and a life that mattered. We also honor Anne Marie Hochhalter, who was paralyzed during the attack and whose death in February 2025 was ruled a homicide by the Jefferson County Coroner, bringing the final death toll to fourteen. We examine the catastrophic failures in the law enforcement response, including the contain-and-wait protocol that kept officers outside the school for more than an hour after the attack began. Dave Sanders was alive for hours, tended to by students as a sign in the window read “One bleeding to death.” Police snipers saw it. Dispatch communicated with people in the room. Help still did not arrive in time. His daughter later won a $1.5 million settlement against Jefferson County, and his death helped fundamentally change how police across the country respond to active shooter situations. The episode also dismantles the myths that emerged in the immediate aftermath. The Trenchcoat Mafia narrative. The revenge fantasy. The blame placed on video games and musicians. The Cassie Bernall martyrdom story. We explain what the FBI's psychological analysis actually concluded about Harris and Klebold and why the truth, while less sensational than the myths, matters far more. Finally, we examine the lasting impact of Columbine more than twenty-six years later. The lawsuits and settlements. The evolution of school security. The gun control debates that surged and faded. Sue Klebold's memoir and her advocacy for mental health awareness. And the phenomenon researchers now call “The Columbine Effect,” with more than seventy subsequent attacks directly inspired by or linked to what happened that day. This is not an easy episode. It is long, detailed, and emotionally heavy. But it is also an episode that refuses to give the perpetrators the notoriety they sought. Instead, it remembers the dead, honors the survivors who turned trauma into purpose, and acknowledges a community that stood together under the words  “We Are Columbine.”If you take anything from this episode, let it be the names of the fourteen people who should have been allowed to grow old. Say their names. Remember their stories. That is how we push back against the darkness.Content warning: This episode contains detailed discussions of violence, death, and suicide. Listener discretion is advised.

Zita Cobb grew up on Fogo Island, a remote fishing community off the coast of Newfoundland that operated for centuries without cash. Her childhood was shaped by a deep sense of place, the collapse of the inshore fishery, and a belief that communities survive through mutual care. When she left to study business, and later helped build JDS Uniphase into one of the most successful high-tech companies of its era, she carried those ideas with her. The rise and fall of the telecom bubble gave her a front-row view into what happens when profit and speed outrun purpose, sending her searching for a different model of development. In this episode of The Eric Ries Show, I sit down with Zita to talk about that journey and the philosophy that guides her work today. We discuss why she believes business is a tool for solving real problems and how communities can reclaim agency by understanding their own assets. Zita explains how Shorefast grew into a holistic set of enterprises on Fogo Island, including the Fogo Island Inn, which reinvests all surpluses into local culture and economic development. We talk about how communities can build their own pathways to development and why Zita believes lasting change begins close to home.—Brought to you by: Framer: Build better sites, faster at https://www.framer.com/design Use code "ERIC"—Where to find Zita Cobb:• LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/zita-cobb• Website: https://shorefast.org —Where to find Eric:• Newsletter:https://ericries.carrd.co/ • Podcast:https://ericriesshow.com/ • YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@theericriesshow —In This Episode We Cover:(00:00) Intro(02:15) How her father nudged her to leave Fogo Island(04:46) What life was like growing up on Fogo Island(08:37) A short history of Fogo Island(11:15) Leaving home to recover from tuberculosis(13:15) The experience of leaving for university(15:04) Early challenges at university(16:17) What education looked like on Fogo Island(18:01) How adapting to modern life shaped Zita's systems thinking(20:24) Zita's travels and early roles at Texaco and Shell(22:30) How Zita got into tech (24:05) How Zita learned that technical possibility alone is not enough(26:57) Joining JDS and taking it public (30:54) The rise and fall of the telecom bubble (34:08) Why taking JDS public felt like a mistake and what she learned about putting profit first(38:52) Zita's father's legacy (41:45) Why Zita spent five years sailing after ending her tech career(44:47) Zita's work distributing radios in Rwanda (46:32) Why she went back to Fogo Island to spark economic development (49:26) The beginnings of Shorefast(53:11) How the ownership model protects Shorefast's mission from the pitfalls of money(56:29) An overview of Fogo Island Inn and how its local-first mission spread (1:03:32) Why Shorefast chose the harder path and paid deep attention to details(1:08:18) What community means(1:12:09) How Shorefast Institute models a new approach to investing for development(1:16:53) Learnings from The Third Pillar (1:18:05) Why Shorefast created the economic nutrition label —You can find episode references at https://www.ericriesshow.com/—Production and marketing by Pen Name.Eric may be an investor in the companies discussed.

Join us as Ocean House owner and award-winning author Deborah Goodrich Royce moderates a conversation with our featured author, Wilbur Ross, former U.S. Secretary of Commerce. About the Author: Wilbur L. Ross, Jr. served as Secretary of Commerce in the Trump administration following 55 years of experience in investment banking and private equity. In this capacity, he advised President Donald Trump on commercial and economic affairs and helped American entrepreneurs and businesses create jobs and economic opportunity. A native of North Bergen, New Jersey, Ross spent a significant portion of his business career at Rothschild, Inc. Ross negotiated on behalf of creditors in some of the highest-profile bankruptcy proceedings in history, including those involving Pan Am, TWA, Texaco, and Drexel Burnham Lambert. After founding his own private equity firm in 2000, Ross purchased and restored many companies to profitability, including those in the steel, coal, textile, and banking industries. Over the course of his career, Ross restructured more than $400 billion in assets, earning him a distinguished reputation on Wall Street. In 2011, Bloomberg Markets named him one of the 50 most influential people in global finance. Secretary Ross's philanthropic work has included significant support for the Japan Society, the Brookings Institution, the Blenheim Foundation, and numerous entities devoted to the fine arts, including the Rene Magritte Museum in Brussels. He was also a member of the advisory board of the Yale University School of Management. Secretary Ross is a graduate of Yale University and Harvard Business School. He and his wife, Hilary Geary Ross, have four children. Before being named President Trump's Secretary of Commerce in 2017, Wilbur Ross had already earned a reputation as the “King of Bankruptcy” over his 55-year career on Wall Street. Often working on high-profile bankruptcies such as Pan Am and Texaco, Ross helped restructure more than $400 billion in assets, and was named among Bloomberg's 50 most influential people in global finance. After coming to Washington, Ross faced equally tough challenges, yet survived in his post for all four years. About The Book: Creating Success in Business and Life explains how Ross got to the top and stayed there. Rising from humble beginnings in North Bergen, New Jersey, Ross applied simple principles with strict discipline—something readers can apply in their own quest for success. Ultimately, Ross's strategies and dealmaking skills led to relationships with King Charles, Warren Buffett, Carl Icahn, the Rothschild family, Steve Wynn, Lakshmi Mittal, Mike Milken, and many other famous personalities. Ross also documents his experiences with President Trump in the Oval Office.  Whether you're interested in Ross' experiences as a neighbor of John Lennon in the legendary Dakota apartment building, celebrating with Sir Richard Branson on his private island, or his tumultuous time in Washington, you will find Risks and Returns to be a candid reflection of a life lived at the pinnacle of Wall Street, New York, and Palm Beach society, and the Trump administration. Above all, anyone driven to find career success will learn from Ross' life the strategies and mentality to achieve it.  Please find out more about Wilbur Ross and his book at www.risksandreturns.net. This isn't a conversation you hear every day. In fact, most people will never talk about it out loud. But money—whether you have too much or not enough—always brings feelings with it: guilt, pressure, shame, confusion. In this powerful episode, I sit down with Chase Collins, a fifth-generation trust fund inheritor and the founder of Trust Your Trust Fund. Chase opens up about the real emotional cost of inherited wealth: the guilt of receiving money you didn't earn, the isolation of being treated like a walking dollar sign, and the identity crises that come with trying to define your worth outside your bank account. You'll hear: What it feels like to inherit money… and still feel completely lost. How Chase's family history—spanning Texaco, massive real estate losses, and generational silence—shaped his financial beliefs. The most common emotional and behavioral mistakes trust fund inheritors make. How to create your own financial identity when you've been labeled “the heir” or “the trust fund baby.” Why inherited guilt can quietly sabotage your ability to live a meaningful life—and how to move through it. The difference between giving out of guilt… and giving from alignment. Whether you've inherited wealth, expect to one day, or are simply curious about the hidden dynamics of money and family legacy, this episode will challenge what you think you know about “having it all.” Be sure to like and follow the show on your favorite podcast app! Episode 298 is the eleventh  episode of our mini-series on the Tippit murder.  David Belin, the celebrated Warren Commission attorney called  it the "Rosetta Stone" of the JFK assassination. It may very well be... just that! In  this  eleventh  episode, the assailant makes his way away from the murder scene at 10th   and Patton and is seen by various witnesses heading toward Jefferson Street. Today, we pick up the narrative in the moments right  after that fateful confrontation. The murder, on the heels of the President's assassination,  sets  off a frantic city-wide manhunt, drawing dozens of officers and citizen witnesses into a chaotic chase that will culminate, just minutes later, at a local movie theater. What unfolds in that brief window of time is a cascade of conflicting witness statements, mysterious evidence, and a police response that seems almost inexplicably diverted at the most critical  of moments. In this episode, we follow Tippit's killer step-by-step as he flees the scene. We  hear from the car lot employees who saw him stuffing a pistol into his belt and the mechanics who watched him hurry past their Texaco station. We  examine the bizarre discovery of a jacket that doesn't seem to fit the eventual suspect, and the critical police diversion at a nearby library that  may have cleared a path for the killer's escape. Finally, we will arrive at the Texas Theatre, where a shoe store manager's suspicion and a ticket seller's "woman's intuition" will bring the full force of the Dallas Police Department crashing down, leading to an arrest that would define the official narrative for decades to come. This is the story of the pursuit, and a  chase through the streets and alleys of Oak Cliff that raises far more questions than it answers. And of course, the crescendo is full of questions as to whether there were two Oswald's present in the theatre that day...or not. Yes…there is a grave possibility that   the true "Rosetta Stone" of November 22nd, 1963, might just lie in the quiet Dallas suburb of Oak Cliff, waiting for us to finally put the pieces together. This is a wander I've created especially for you…and of all the wanders you have taken with me, this may be the most thrilling of all! And don't worry, as the fall winds turn cooler, we will all be vacationing once again, in Mexico…I think  you know what I mean by that. But our new wander takes precedent. As usual, you'll experience the event with ear popping detail, as you listen up to what really happened. So stay tuned, and keep an eye out for what I think may be one of the best miniseries that we've done yet. It will be on the airwaves before you know it, and please let your friends in on this  one too…folks…you just cant write this stuff…

Senior Vice President and Executive in Residence with Rapid7 and Chairman for Cyversity, Julian Waits, grew up in the era of the Justice League and Superman and it shaped his career. Julian always wanted to do something where he could find a way to help society to basically help others. Starting out as a Baptist minister with aspirations of being a professional musician, Julian found it more practical to take some technology classes and practice his saxophone when he had time. His first tech job was at Texaco where he worked on early networks and moved into systems engineering at Compaq. Julian notes his ADD made coding less attractive than talking with others to solve problems and Compaq provided him with opportunities to pivot. Searching out diversity, Julian moved to DC, and had his first taste of startups. He now describes himself as a serial entrepreneur. We thank Julian for sharing his story with us. Mixed with candid advice, Patrick walks through challenges like destination weddings, annulments, and outdoor ceremonies, weaving in personal anecdotes and gentle humor. This Day in Legal History: Standard Oil Breaks UpOn May 15, 1911, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a landmark decision in Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey v. United States, finding that Standard Oil had violated the Sherman Antitrust Act by engaging in monopolistic practices. The Court unanimously ruled that Standard Oil's dominance over the oil industry—achieved through aggressive acquisitions, predatory pricing, and exclusive agreements—constituted an illegal restraint of trade. As a remedy, the Court ordered the breakup of Standard Oil into 34 separate and independent companies, a dramatic reshaping of the American oil landscape. Among the entities created were companies that would later become industry giants in their own right, including Exxon, Mobil, Chevron, and Amoco. The decision was a defining moment in U.S. antitrust enforcement, signaling the federal government's willingness to confront corporate consolidation. It aimed to restore competition and prevent the recurrence of monopolistic control in vital sectors of the economy. However, over the next century, many of the separated entities gradually reconsolidated. Notably, Exxon and Mobil merged in 1999 to form ExxonMobil, while Chevron absorbed both Gulf Oil and Texaco, and BP later acquired Amoco.Today, a majority of the original 34 companies—or their direct successors—are now part of just a few massive corporations. This reconsolidation serves as a cautionary tale: without vigilant antitrust enforcement post-breakup, market dominance can re-emerge in new forms. The Standard Oil saga demonstrates not only the power of antitrust law but also its limitations if not actively maintained. It underscores that breaking up monopolies is only one step—the preservation of competition requires ongoing oversight. The EPA announced it will weaken several Biden-era regulations on PFAS, or “forever chemicals,” in drinking water. Specifically, the agency plans to rescind enforceable limits on three types of PFAS—PFNA, PFHxS, and HFPO-DA (also known as GenX)—as well as on combinations of those and PFBS. At the same time, the EPA is giving water systems two extra years, until 2031, to comply with limits on PFOA and PFOS, the two most well-known and studied PFAS chemicals, citing the challenges especially for smaller and rural systems. The original Biden administration rule had set an enforceable limit of 4 parts per trillion (ppt) for PFOA and PFOS and a non-enforceable goal of zero exposure due to their cancer and health risks. The EPA says it will revisit its regulatory decisions on the other PFAS types it is now rolling back. Administrator Lee Zeldin framed the delay as necessary flexibility while maintaining protections against the most harmful chemicals, but environmental groups like the Environmental Working Group blasted the move as a concession to industry that puts public health at risk. Some state-level regulators expressed caution and said more time is needed to evaluate the impact of rescinding the additional PFAS limits.EPA Moves to Weaken Biden-era PFAS Limits for Drinking WaterU.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. appeared before Congress for the first time in his new role, facing bipartisan scrutiny over his department's proposed 2026 budget, mass layoffs, and his response to a growing measles outbreak. Since taking office in February, Kennedy has overseen the dismissal of roughly 10,000 workers across major health agencies, aligning with broader Trump administration efforts to downsize the federal government. His budget plan calls for deep cuts, including $18 billion from the National Institutes of Health and $3.6 billion from the CDC.Lawmakers questioned Kennedy's controversial stance on vaccines—particularly during an outbreak that has resulted in over 1,000 infections and three deaths, largely among unvaccinated populations. Representative Rosa DeLauro accused Kennedy of promoting misinformation and endangering public health. Senator Bill Cassidy, who supported Kennedy's confirmation based on promises to uphold vaccine access and collaborate with Congress, emphasized the need for transparency and reassurance amid sweeping departmental changes.Kennedy defended the workforce reductions as a return to pre-COVID staffing levels and projected $1.8 billion in annual savings. Still, critics view the cuts as harmful to the country's public health infrastructure. His personal conduct also drew scrutiny after posting photos of himself swimming in Rock Creek, a site banned for public use due to unsafe water conditions.US health chief Kennedy faces lawmakers' questions on mass firings, measles | ReutersA growing number of major U.S. companies are proposing to leave Delaware as their state of incorporation—a trend being called “Dexit”—following Elon Musk's public fallout with Delaware courts. At least nine publicly traded companies, each valued over $1 billion, are preparing shareholder votes to move their legal homes, while five, including Tesla and Trump Media, have already relocated to states like Texas, Florida, and Nevada. The exodus is driven by concerns over Delaware's increasingly strict scrutiny of deals involving controlling shareholders, highlighted by a 2024 court ruling voiding Musk's $56 billion Tesla pay package.Companies say Delaware's legal environment has become unpredictable, especially for founder-led or insider-controlled firms. By contrast, states like Nevada and Texas offer looser standards and greater protection from shareholder litigation. For example, Nevada's laws shield corporate boards under the business judgment rule unless there is fraud, while Delaware courts still require fairness and transparency in insider transactions. In response, Delaware recently passed laws to limit judicial review of certain deals and curb shareholders' access to corporate records, hoping to stem the corporate departures. Still, critics like legal scholars and corporate counsel argue that Delaware's courts are now perceived as activist and uncertain, prompting companies to seek jurisdictions they believe offer more legal stability and control. In Tesla's wake, more big companies propose voting “Dexit" to depart Delaware | Reuters This is a public episode. Okay, so I made one comment about Kristin's coffee-making skills and instantly became the villain. And then she replaced me—with Family Medicine. Like, actually replaced me. For an entire segment. This episode, we talk about the real heartbreak behind Medicare's decision not to cover GLP-1 medications for weight loss and diabetes, and the wider implications for access, affordability, and the ongoing “just exercise more” narrative that's exhausting all of us. Spoiler: we're not fans of weaponized personal responsibility. Then Family Medicine makes his podcast debut, and wow—he has some things to get off his chest. Like being overworked, underappreciated, and constantly asked to “clear” patients for cataract surgery. (Which isn't a thing. Please stop saying it's a thing.) We close things out with a conversation about burnout, respect, weighted blankets, and fermented Texaco antibiotics. You know, just a normal Tuesday. Takeaways: I mentioned Kristin's coffee grounds and now I'm banned from caffeine commentary. GLP-1 meds aren't being covered by Medicare anymore, and it's as infuriating as you'd expect. Family Medicine is here. He's tired. And he's not “clearing” anyone for anything. If you don't think all doctors are burned out, you're not paying attention. Every Thursday, we bring you a shorter, snappier episode filled with inspiration, creative news, and practical tips to carry you through the week. Whether you need motivation or insights, we've got you covered! This week, we welcomed Joseph Parsons to the podcast. By day, Joseph is a freelance graphic designer, and by night, he takes to the stage as a stand-up comedian. His dual career path sparked a fascinating discussion about balancing two passions: navigating the challenges of freelancing and the unexpected parallels between pitching design ideas and performing stand-up comedy. This episode is for you if you've ever juggled different roles in your creative journey. Joseph shared his thoughts on how the industry is changing, including the impact of the Government's IR35 legislation on freelancers and small businesses. We also explored how comedy has evolved, with platforms like social media offering new opportunities for comedians to find success outside traditional routes. Joseph's upcoming tour, Re-Designed, is a brilliant blend of his experiences in comedy and design—be sure to check it out for a good laugh and some relatable industry insights. This week's creative news takes us on a journey of nostalgia and innovation. In Finland, Aalto University is unveiling Nokia's design archive on 15 January, celebrating the brand that defined the mobile world in the '90s. From the iconic 8110 "banana phone" to the customisable 3210, the archive is a treasure trove of design sketches, marketing materials, and audio recordings, offering a rich blend of inspiration and history. Meanwhile, Cornish landscape artist Dianne Griffiths has won the 2024 People's Choice Award for her atmospheric painting Driving Home. This evocative depiction of a Texaco petrol station under a starry sky captivated voters and has even been purchased by the petrol station itself. In tech news, Apple is rumoured to be working on its thinnest phone yet, the iPhone 17 Air. Combining sleek design with advanced technology, it's shaping up to be a bold step forward in minimalist tech. Our Spotlight segment this week celebrates the 25 most admired graphic designers of 2024, as voted for by the design community. From bold innovators like Jessica Walsh to typographic legends like Astrid Stavro, these creatives are shaping the future of visual culture and leaving a lasting impact on the industry. The full list is a testament to the diversity and brilliance of today's graphic design scene. Our Book of the Week is Beyond the Wall: East Germany, 1949–1990 by Katja Hoyer. It offers a fresh look at life behind the Iron Curtain. This detailed history reveals the complexities of the GDR, from its Marxist roots to its collapse, blending personal stories with political insights. A must-read for history buffs! For our Tip of the Week, we look at networking and why it should be your priority in 2025. Networking is about building real connections. Start small—ask simple questions like, "What brought you here?" Follow up afterwards to keep the relationship alive. Authenticity is key. Networking isn't about selling yourself—it's about making new friends. On Monday, our guest will be Jessi Brattengeier, creative director at The New York Times. She will share her inspirations, processes, and aspirations and give us a really interesting look behind the scenes at one of the world's most prestigious publications. And then, instead of The Spark on Thursday, we've got a Christmas Special for you, featuring ten former guests of The Creative Boom Podcast, all helping us get into the festive spirit. Until then!

Whether it's managing finances, nurturing family relationships, or leading a business, intentionality is key to long-term success. Hard Work and Financial Literacy: Growing up in a financially literate family, Stu learned the value of hard work and money management early on. He also passed these lessons to his own children, expanding their understanding of investing. Overcoming Challenges: Stu's journey wasn't without obstacles, but his leadership skills and mindset helped him navigate both personal and professional challenges effectively. Money Learning: Stu's parents played a pivotal role in his financial education, making him "money literate" by his teenage years. They instilled in him the value of saving, budgeting, and working hard to earn money. However, Stu shared that while his family taught him to save, they didn't dive deep into investment strategies. This realization led him to ensure that his own children had a more comprehensive financial education, including understanding investments and creating wealth beyond saving. Stu also noted how financial literacy is different today, with technology enabling anyone to invest with ease—something that wasn't as accessible during his early years. Bio: Stu Crum is a former college football star who transitioned from the sports field to the corporate boardroom. Over the years, he held leadership roles at Texaco, Shell Oil, Jiffy Lube, and Bridgestone. Stu worked on big deals with influential figures like Carl Icahn and developed his leadership philosophy from both his personal and professional experiences. His concept of Intentional Living is explored further in his book, Aim for the Uprights: The Intentional Playbook for Success in Faith, Family, and Business. Learn more at stucrum.com. Key Discussion Points: Learning the Value of Money: Stu shared how he grew up in an upper-middle-class family where financial literacy was highly emphasized. His parents were intentional about teaching him the importance of money and working hard to earn it, a mindset that stuck with him throughout his life. Financial Knowledge Gap: Stu revealed that while he was well-prepared in managing money, his parents didn't teach him much about investing. This motivated him to be more intentional with his children, discussing investment strategies early on to ensure they understood how to grow their wealth. From Football to Business: Stu talked about how his football background, especially playing in highly competitive environments, shaped his leadership skills. He carried this competitive drive and discipline into his corporate career, eventually leading some of the biggest companies in their sectors. The Importance of Intentional Living: One of Stu's core messages is that success in any area—whether in family life, business, or personal growth—requires intentionality. He believes in setting clear goals and following through with deliberate actions to achieve them. This has been his guiding philosophy in both his personal and professional life. Navigating Financial Changes: Stu reflected on the significant changes in how people approach finances today. With investment apps and zero-fee trading platforms, it has become easier to invest, unlike the days when stock trades could cost hundreds of dollars. He advised staying intentional with money, whether it's in managing day-to-day expenses or making long-term investments. Conclusion: Stu Crum's journey from college football to corporate leadership is a testament to the power of intentional living. By staying true to his values, working hard, and always learning, he's been able to lead a fulfilling life both personally and professionally. His advice on being intentional with finances, family, and career is both timeless and highly relevant in today's fast-paced world. This episode serves as a reminder to live with purpose, set clear goals, and never stop striving for improvement in all areas of life.   Links: stucrum.com Linkedln-  linkedin.com/in/stucrum Twitter – https://x.com/Stucrum6     Richer Soul Life Beyond Money. Amie Ostrander is a non-seismic oil and gas exploration consultant and researcher. His early research work with Exxon, Marathon, Texaco, and other major oil companies and some smaller independents demonstrated the potential of using non-seismic resistivity technology for oil exploration in plays where seismic data does not delineate the oil and gas reservoirs. Arnie's 40-year focus has been the utilization of non-seismic geophysical methods for the delineation of high-volume, high profit, and underdeveloped fracture reservoirs, and some potentially high-volume stratigraphic reservoirs that were not observed in either 2-0 or 3-0 seismic data.

Now Ross shares the story of how he got to the top and stayed there, as he relates in his new book Risks and Returns: Creating Success in Business and Life. He rose from humble beginnings in North Bergen, New Jersey, applied simple principles with strict discipline, and ultimately Ross's strategies and dealmaking skills led to relationships with King Charles, Warren Buffett, Carl Icahn, the Rothschild family, Steve Wynn, Lakshmi Mittal, Mike Milken, and many other famous personalities. Ross will also share his experiences with President Trump in the Oval Office. So whether you're interested in Ross's experiences as John Lennon's neighbor in the legendary Dakota apartment building, celebrating with Sir Richard Branson on his private island, or his tumultuous time in Washington, come hear a candid reflection of a life lived at the pinnacle of Wall Street, New York, and Palm Beach society, and the Trump administration. Two-time Emmy and three-time NAACP Image Award-winning, television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald, interviewed Stephanie Stuckey.  The Chair of Stuckey's.  A pecan snack and candy company based in Wrens, GA. She is also the author of “Unstuck: Reviving an American Icon.”  Stuckey's growth lies in their partnership with almost 5,000 retailers nationwide that sell their delicious pecan snacks and candies. Questions About the Company's History and Legacy: Stuckey's has such a rich history. Can you share what initially inspired the rebirth of the brand after all these years? How does social media on LinkedIn work? The Power of Marketing and Branding. What strategies did you implement to turn Stuckey's around and bring it back to the forefront of the market? Acquiring a pecan manufacturing facility was a major step. How has owning this facility impacted your product offerings and business growth? What role does innovation play in the resurgence of Stuckey's, especially in terms of product development and marketing? Questions About Branding and Marketing: Stuckey's is known for its nostalgic appeal. How do you balance honoring that nostalgia while also appealing to modern consumers? How important has social media and digital marketing been in the rebirth of Stuckey's? Questions About Leadership and Vision: What's your long-term vision for Stuckey's, and how do you plan to continue the momentum you've built? What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs wanting to start their own business? Questions About Partnerships and Community: How have partnerships with retailers and other brands contributed to the comeback of Stuckey's? Stuckey's has deep roots in Georgia. How important has the local community been in your company's resurgence? Can you share any upcoming collaborations or new product launches that will be part of Stuckey's comeback story?   It all started with a borrowed Model A Ford and a $35 loan   With that, W.S. “Sylvester” Stuckey, Sr. founded Stuckey's as a roadside pecan stand along Highway 23 in Eastman, GA in 1937. With that Ford that he retrofitted to haul pecans and the loan (from his grandmother), W.S. drove around the countryside and bought pecans from local farmers to sell at his stand, along with local honey and souvenirs. His wife, Ethel, added her delicious homemade candies – southern delicacies like pralines, Divinities, and our iconic Pecan Log Rolls.   Through grit and determination, the Stuckeys grew the stores from these humble beginnings to a roadside empire. At its peak in the 1960s, the little pecan company had become an integral part of the American road trip. It boasted 368 stores in over 30 states, each offering kitschy souvenirs, clean restrooms, Texaco gas, and of course, our famous candies.   Stuckey's also owned a candy plant in Eastman to allow for larger production of sweet treats, a trucking company, and a sign company that produced the 4,000 Stuckey's billboards that dotted America's highways. Stuckey's merged with Pet Milk Co. in 1964 to add capacity and capital for the company to grow.   Decline and Rebound   W.S. Stuckey, Sr. died in 1977, the same year that Illinois Central Industries, a Chicago conglomerate, bought Pet Milk Co., and they began to close Stuckey's stores across the country. Stuckey's fell into a decline until 1984 when W.S. “Billy” Stuckey, Jr., son of the founder and a five-term Congressman from the 8th District of Georgia, acquired Stuckey's and began to turn the company around.   Under Billy's helm, the Stuckey's Express concept – or a store within a store – was launched, and the company expanded to over 115 franchises in 17 states. The Eastman candy plant continued operations by a third-party contractor but was shuttered in 2009 during the Recession, although Stuckey's branded candies continued to be produced by outside vendors.   In November of 2019, Ethel “Stephanie” Stuckey, Billy's daughter, took over as CEO of Stuckey's. In August of 2020, Stuckey's acquired Front Porch Pecans, a pecan snack company that sells to domestic and foreign markets, including grocery channels in the Southeast U.S. With this merger, Stuckey's gained management support with R.G. Lamar as new President to run Stuckey's with Stephanie.   In January of 2021, Stephanie and R.G. acquired a pecan manufacturing facility in Wrens, Georgia to drive growth of the company through snack and candy making. Later that year, they added a third equity owner, Ted Wright, a marketing professional based in Atlanta.   Today, Stuckey's is making a comeback, thanks to reinventing the brand as a pecan snack and candy company. They are once again making the delicious products that Ethel first made in her country kitchen, and Sylvester sold at his roadside stand. There are still 13 original blue roof Stuckey's stores in operation. These stores are not owned or operated by the parent corporation but are licensed to sell our products and remain an important part of our past and story. Stuckey's growth lies in our partnership with almost 5,000 retailers nationwide, including Hobby Lobby, Bealls, Ingles, Wawa, TravelCenters of America, and others, that sell our delicious pecan snacks and candies. The company also maintains an online store, a fundraising business, and a corporate gift program. In August of 2022, R.G. Lamar, Jr. transitioned to the role of CEO, and Stephanie Stuckey assumed the role of Chair. They continue to run the day-to-day operations of Stuckey's, with R.G. driving internal growth and Stephanie being the external face of the brand.
