“The late Irish poet and author John O' Donohue had this fantastic notion about how there are three key things you absolutely need to have any kind of balance in this damn world: silence, stillness, and solitude. We're obviously living in a time that's utterly devoid of any of those three things.” Berman, who just welcomed his second daughter this year, adds, “As much as parenting is this unbelievable well of joy and wonder, it also just quadruples that cacophony. You're always dealing with the beginnings or the aftermath of chaos. I knew that if I couldn't find a way to make space for that silence, stillness, and solitude in my life, I'd be a much worse father, husband, and songwriter for it.”The artist's own musical journey continues to zigzag through uncharted territory. In 2014, Eddie made his debut with the EP Blood & Rust, featuring his duet of “Dancing in the Dark” with British folk icon Laura Marling. The adored Springsteen cover received praise from Spin, NME, Consequence of Sound, Uncut and more. In the aftermath, Berman's profile grew on international tours and with the release of his first LP Polyhymnia. He signed to Nettwerk Music Group in 2017 and released his sophomore album Before The Bridge, which saw him reach new milestones – generating tens of millions of streams with prime real estate on coveted Spotify playlists like Your Favorite Coffeehouse, Acoustic Covers, and The Pulse of Americana, and spurring tours with Laura Marling, Tyler Childers, Passenger, Lee Ann Womack, and William Fitzsimmons. In the midst of all this, Berman and his family relocated to Portland, OR. As he settled into life in his new city, he began making a daily pilgrimage to nearby Forest Park, one of the largest urban forests in the US. He made it a ritual to go on a six mile hike each morning, during which he immersed himself in the books and lectures of great philosophers like O' Donohue, Rainer Maria Rilke, Thich Nhat Hanh. “I'd hike the immensely beautiful three miles to the top of the trail listening to these incredible thinkers, and then hike back down in silence, unpacking what I'd heard. The constant through lines of these works started seeping into me: the deep solace of nature, the necessity of solitude, and the importance of always trying to see yourself on the threshold to new frontiers. This album came from that strange dualistic aspect of those hikes: one part of me was just trying to quiet my mind as I walked in the woods, and the other part of me was trying to, you know, dissect the infinite nature of the universe — and myself.https://eddiebermanmusic.com/Support the showThanks for listening for more information or to listen to other podcasts or watch YouTube videos click on this link >https://thetroutshow.com/

What if, while looking to adopt, two babies stole your heart, one white and one Black. And when you looked at them, you just knew that they were both your daughters. William Fitzsimmons, singer, songwriter and producer, adopted his two daughters with his now ex-wife, knowing that as a White man, it would be important to learn to take care of his Black daughter's hair and educate himself about her African-American culture. But what would you do, if a cultural reckoning swept across America and put a harsh spotlight on the racial differences in your family? Would you try to stay low until things settled down? Or would you celebrate your daughter's heritage for all the world to see? Host Paul Cardall has been a fan of singer songwriter Aaron Espe for more than two decades. The musicians discuss Aaron's unique gift of writing songs that reconnect adults to their childhood. They discuss Aaron's latest album, Up North, which explores his childhood in a small Michigan town where he would eat "Liver and Onions" just to be with his grandfather as well as get a haircut to see his uncle and barber Duane. They talk about his grandmother in a rest home called Sheltering Oaks, which he wrote a song about. Paul asks about being a father today and what Aaron is doing to help re-create a time of innocence for his four sons. They talk about getting the kids off the iPads to explore outside.  The two discuss marriage and having wives who support an artist career and mentality. They also briefly talk about Deer Hunting as children, which Aaron wrote a song about. ABOUT AARON ESPEFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/aaronespepageInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/aaronespeYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpd-_G3rgyx40Vbg_X9v7XgSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/11nbBcaBk8uXBPQsc3Sq9p?si=HDWhdyOgQhaJ4oSJZkclvAApple Music: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/aaron-espe/98279561 Raised in small-town northern Minnesota, singer-songwriter Aaron Espe writes tunes “…as delicate as his soft spoken voice,” says American Songwriter, “about the simple joys and occasional frustrations of life…[sometimes cloaking] his easy going lyrics in complex conceptual ideas.”Espe got his start in 2005 opening for the folk duo Storyhill in Minneapolis before dropping out of college to tour on his own. Norwegian DJ Kygo recorded “Think About You” (cowritten by Kygo, Petey Martin Valerie Broussard). The Dark Corner Podcast

In this episode of The Dark Corner, Dave returns to the tarot with the 18th card, The Moon. For example, he describes the meaning behind symbols such as the wolf and the crayfish. Furthermore, he ties The Moon card to astrology and numerology. Also, he reflects on the psychology of this complex card and its association with the subconscious mind. Before that, Dave talks about how Elliot Page's very existence led to someone getting kicked off Twitter. Also, Dave laments gatekeeping around Kate Bush. On the other hand, he celebrates the success of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. In an unrelated note, Dave tests for Autism. For the Dark Track, William Fitzsimmons performs The Tide Pulls from the Moon from the Nettwerk Fall Music Sampler 2011 compilation. William plays indie folk music mostly on acoustic guitar. He's based in Nashville. Additionally, Dave plays a promo for Boldly Go, a Strange New Worlds podcast. Also, Dave shouts out Ed for recommending yet another band. Finally, check out DJ Evil Dave's latest playlist on Soundcloud.

Rosie discusses how a seemingly simple question from one of her boys led her to think that really there was a deeper/bigger question being asked - essentially, “what do I have to do for attention, praise, or love?” In spotting that, and nipping that incorrect conclusion in the bud, it struck on an incorrect conclusion she had carried through her life from childhood, and only recently corrected herself. Listen along as Rosie talks to and comforts her younger, former self (Tiny Psycho Roise) and stays on alert with her own children to try to beat them to their own (incorrect/false) conclusions, so that they don't carry those misunderstandings or "child deduction" into their adult life. Parenting is already a tall order - raising them, teaching them, trying our best to answer their questions, but what about the questions they don't ask? The underlying questions they may not even know they're wondering, and the wrong conclusions they come to trying to put things together. Admittedly, that's a toughie, but let's try to be on the lookout for those, and try to cover things just in case. Just in case they're getting the wrong idea of what they have to do to get love, or to be loved, because what we want more than anything is for them to know that they are loved unconditionally.   - Send Rosie your questions to have answered on a future podcast! -  AskRosieLFP@gmail.com  Brought to you by: Lullabies For Parents Vol 1 on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music Featuring guest appearances: Sufjan Stevens, The Shins, Iron & Wine, Alexi Murdoch, William Fitzsimmons, Audrey Assad, Charity from The Head & The Heart, Kanene from The Lone Bellow, Dawn Landes, Denison Witmer, and many more. Anxiety, depression, panic attacks. Generally dreadful stuff that we understandably try to avoid, do whatever we can to be free of, or just get past, but what if some anxiety was actually there to help you? Stay with me now! Why is it showing up? What if it's trying to get your attention to tell you something needs to change? What if you are coming undone because something new is emerging, because you've outgrown the old you, and the new you is trying to be re-born? What if you have to let some things go to make room for the new you? New found joys? New inspiration? What if that anxiety is actually you being transformed? It's uncomfortable and unknown, but it could be leading you to something new. A fuller you! Your true self. Let's talk about it! - Rosie touches on her own bouts with anxiety and panic attacks, and how something Richard Rohr said helped her unlock and identify some necessary changes she needed to make in her life and in her career. (the book mentioned - Falling Upward) *This episode certainly applies to parents, but is much broader and should be of interest and encouragement to anyone - parent or not* ***Of course there are many causes of, and many ways to deal with anxiety, depression, or panic attacks and this will not apply to all scenarios obviously, but an idea to consider and be curious about and investigate. Particularly entering, or in, the second half of life.** - Send Rosie your questions to have answered on a future podcast! Being a parent is really hard, and unfortunately it's really easy to get caught up comparing ourselves to other parents - Parents that seem to have it all together. Could be our friends, our own parents, parents we see on social media, even strangers at the store, at school, on a playground, wherever... But beware, it's a trap! Don't fall into that trap! Don't compare! Be yourself! Rosie walks you through how to do that by first identifying who you really are, and always have been. We need to lean into our strengths, and be our true selves, and by extension teach our kids to be their true selves too - wonderfully confident and self assured. Give your kids the unique adventure that only YOU can give them by being you, and let other people have their own by being them. Ep. 43 Vulnerability, Individuality And Technology: The Songwriting Journey With Allie Moss

BAST Training podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 19, 2022 39:18

This week Singing Teachers Talk takes a deep dive into the songwriting process with artist, songwriter and vocal coach Allie Moss. The New Orleans-based songwriter reveals how the creative process works for her and shares some top writing tips. Allie's music has featured in Charmed, Batwoman, and Netflix's Virgin River. She also co-leads education platform Thinking Outside the Blocks.     KEY TAKEAWAYS There is no one defining skill that you need to be a songwriter, but it helps if you're good at storytelling and able to allow yourself to be vulnerable. Try reverse engineering the structure of your favourite song. Try ghost writing and counting the syllables. Then write something with the same number of syllables in each line. Keep the hook in the same place and rewrite it in your own words.  The melody is not more important than the lyrics, nor are the lyrics more important than the melody. There is no one-size-fits-all formula for writing a song. Just experiment and follow your feelings.  Sometimes writing songs is just for you. It can be a deeply personal way of processing emotion, rather than being intended to be shared with the rest of the world.  Focus on getting your emotions out on the page. You can spend time and edit later. While the emotion is there you should use that without trying to filter it down.  BEST MOMENTS ‘I got bitten by the bug of making something out of nothing and being that creative spark'  ‘Songwriting can feel like a little bubble where you're alone with your thoughts and fears'  ‘Pause and assess your skills with kindness and honesty'    EPISODE RESOURCES  BAST Training  Guest Website: alliemoss.com thinkingoutsidetheblocks.com/ patreon.com/alliemoss   Social Media: @alliemoss @thinkingoutsidetheblocks   Relevant Links & Mentions:  Allie's artist examples: Joni Mitchell, Sia, David Bazan, Bon Iver, Coldplay, Joseph, The Beatles   Blog on The Genius Myth: https://thinkingoutsidetheblocks.com/listentothisrevisionisthistory Recommended Podcast: https://www.pushkin.fm/episode/hallelujah Music Technology Tools: Pro Tools; Logic Pro; Garageband; Splice Yamaha Reface CP    ABOUT THE GUEST  New Jersey-born Allie Moss is an artist, songwriter, sideman, and vocal coach. Her 2011 debut Late Bloomer landed high-profile syncs on Pretty Little Liars, Bones, Parenthood, and a prominent BT Infinity campaign in the UK. Since then her songs have been placed in many TV & film spots throughout the years. Most recently, her single “Already Down” was featured in Charmed, Batwoman, and Netflix's Virgin River. She's been an integral member of Ingrid Michaelson's band since 2006 and has also toured backing William Fitzsimmons, Joshua Radin, and Rosi Golan.  Allie co-leads Thinking Outside the Blocks with her longtime collaborator Bess Rogers. TOTB is an education platform and soon-to-be membership for songwriters of all levels and genres. Its workshops and resources are designed to help writers break away from unhelpful mindsets and patterns and get them into a place where their creativity is flowing and evolving. What began in 2016 as a single presentation on their personal experiences working through their creative blocks is now a thriving community offering free weekly Community Classes, monthly BlockBusters songwriting challenges, Immersive Workshops, Coaching, and 2 courses (Rhythm for Songwriters, Music Theory for Songwriters). Allie currently lives in New Orleans, LA with her partner, where she is writing songs, learning Logic Pro, and getting used to the humidity and hurricanes. Her next single, “Forward Motion” will be released in January 2022.    ABOUT THE PODCAST BAST Training is here to help singers gain the knowledge, skills and understanding required to be a great singing teacher. Guten Rutsch!

I got to know William Fitzsimmons through Staying in Tune, a web series i host with the mental health charity Sound Mind Live. We got along so well, and William's story was so interesting, that I had to extend our conversation and get him to chat for Detoxicity.    William is a sensitive soul who's still struggling a bit with some of those old masculine tropes. Over the next hour or so, you'll find out how he made his way through childhood bullying, being a child of divorce who has himself been divorced twice, and how much he loves his then fiancee--now wife. Even though it was just the second time William and I conversed-we got along like old buddies. I hope you feel the humor and warmth in this conversation.

San Francisco born producer, engineer, mixer, musician, and songwriter Eric Robinson's first job in the music business was given to him by legendary Grammy-winning producer Steve Lillywhite. He never anticipated a short email to his hero would find him recording Trey Anastasio of Phish and watching Lillywhite mix U2 at the age of 19. Following his summer in Vermont and New York, Eric landed an internship at Royaltone Studios in LA. This quickly turned into a position as a runner, and not long after Eric was assisting on sessions for Barenaked Ladies, Ricky Martin, and Lifehouse with producers Ron Aniello, Mario Caldato and more. After 3 years at Royaltone, Eric left in 2005 to go freelance. In addition to recording, Eric was also getting busy as a sideman in 2006, playing guitar and keys for notable acts in the burgeoning Hotel Cafe scene such as Cary Brothers, Sara Bareilles, Joshua Radin and Jessie Baylin. This lead to international touring, television appearances and a live concert film with Sara Bareilles. On the studio side, Eric simultaneously struck up a working relationship with producer/songwriter Marshall Altman and the two had immediate success. The first album they worked on together was Kate Voegele’s debut for Interscope/MySpace Records. Eric played all the keyboards, most of the guitars, mandolin, accordion, and banjo on the record, as well as recording and mixing it. Kate’s record sold 250,000 copies in the US and the songs were licensed extensively on TV. Next up came Matt Nathanson’s album Some Mad Hope, which Eric recorded with Altman. The album spawned the double-platinum single, “Come On Get Higher.” Then came albums with Natasha Bedingfield, Trevor Hall, William Fitzsimmons, Walker Hayes, Rosi Golan, Bethany Dillon and Adema, spanning genres from pop to folk to country and metal. After establishing Marlay Studios in North Hollywood in 2010, Eric worked with artists such as Taylor Swift, Sia, Michelle Branch, Natasha Bedingfield, The Milk Carton Kids, Carney, Aqualung, Dan Wilson, P!nk, Rachael Yamagata, Brooke Fraser, Switchfoot, and Boyd Tinsley from Dave Matthews Band. Along the way, Eric gained valuable experience working alongside hit producers such as Ryan Tedder, John Alagia, Dan Wilson and Charlie Peacock. In 2014, Eric was nominated for a Grammy for Album of the Year for his engineering work on Taylor Swift’s “Red” album. Eric focuses on mixing music and film score in stereo and 5.1 surround and producing/co-writing with artists. Recent projects include OneRepublic’s Netflix “Once in a Lifetime” in 5.1 surround, indie band The Lighting, the main title to the Netflix show, “The Haunting of Hill House”, country artist Nora Collins and pop band Castro. Eric works out of his own studio in Los Angeles, Marlay Music. eric-robinson.com

The Secrets To 1000 True SuperFans With Kevin Kelly

Kevin Kelly is a man with a rich background in writing and science. His wisdom and thoughtfulness is pervasive in not only his writings but also his lectures. He's someone with an eye and ear to the future, looking at both trends and technology paired with the human psyche to see what futures await us. The artistic side of this approach to vision casting is brilliant. It's also intriguing. How I came to understand and embrace Kevin's theories on growth goes back a few years to when I was starting my first endeavor in the creative entrepreneurial realm. The Birth Of The SuperFan IdeaBack in 2008, while starting the initial syndication build for The Appetizer Radio Show, I first met an artist who would become a good friend. William Fitzsimmons had transitioned from one career as a therapist into becoming a full-time musician. He wasn't famous, but he did have a really strong core audience that propelled his growth.Years later, I'd connect with several other artists who'd share with me how they'd built their growth strategy around reaching 1000 true fans. It was a theory created by Kevin Kelly in an article he wrote that was published a few decades ago. Intrigued, I looked it up and found it contained the exact formula I was using to build my platform.Fast-forward to this past summer. My good friend (and fellow DIY Artist Router) Chandler Coyle told me of an opportunity to speak with Kevin. Kevin has a new book out called The Inevitable, and was looking at some artistic, entrepreneurial and marketing related podcasts to get on to promote the book. I put my name in the hat and was privileged to get to connect with him.The result of that connection is this podcast episode. It's been several months in the making, but it's brilliant on a variety of levels. The are several things I loved about talking with Kevin Kelly, especially how down-to-earth and open he is. It was like talking with an old friend. He's also incredibly objective, which is refreshing for someone who has done so much in their careers.A Brief Bio On Kevin KellyKevin Kelly is most known for being a writer, author, and co-founder of Wired Magazine. He's also got a rich history in science, photography and digital marketing. He's the founder of The WELL, a virtual community created with Stewart Brand. He's written for publications like The Economist, Esquire, GQ, and the New York Times. His lectures cover subjects ranging from marketing and economic growth to scientific and technological innovation. His writings and books include New Rules for the New Economy: 10 Radical Strategies for a Connected World (Penguin, 1999) and"Forward: 1000 True Fans," pp. 3–8, in Be The Media, David Mathison, editor, (2009), which is where the concept of the SuperFan was born.More insights into Kelly available on his website.Notable Quotes From This Podcast Conversation With Kevin Kelly"The best way to do research on the Internet is to say something and people will tell you that you’re wrong. Numbers aren’t as critical as just doing it.""The Internet was inevitable but the kind of Internet we have (wasn't). (There's a) shift to Internet of experiences away from an Internet of knowledge. Much more emotional and experiential overlay will take place.""Marketing (The Inevitable) on Twitter was something we did well. Tweeting once a day with a quote from the book was very successful."

I have to admit to having some excitement about this podcast episode. I've been a big fan of Rachael Yamagata‘s music for a long time. Going back at least to 2003 when I first heard her self-titled EP and then in '04 with the release of Happenstance.Great musicians write songs that connect with our individual stories, and those stories become a soundtrack to our lives. Happenstance was that for me in many ways. The driving beat and stinging lyrics to Letter Read remain one of my favorite songs. It's probably one of the best sad/breakup songs out there. Add her piano-driven, jazz-styled songwriting to the rest of that album with tracks like Under My Skin, Reason Why, and Be Be Your Love and you have plenty of reason to explore her songbook. This past Friday, she released her latest album Tightrope Walker. It's simply brilliant. And it's already getting featured all over the place. The Appetizer Radio Show is showcasing it, as well a great indie radio platforms like Mountain Stage, NPR Music, and more.I've wondered what it would be like to have a conversation with someone whose music I've followed for years but not ever talked with. I finally had the chance to find out. I want to give a big thanks to my good friend and past DIY Artist Route guest Chandler Coyle for helping to make this wonderful conversation happen. Chandler is a connector, and one of my favorite people. Here's what I discovered right away in talking with Rachael: the music connection is the tip of the iceberg. It's really a heart connection that draws us towards the artists we love.By heart connection I'm referring to the philosophies and ideals we live by. For me, I believe that love is the highest calling we can have. Inside of each of us is a garden. What we plant in our hearts turns to fruits we produce with our lives. My mantra each day is to plant love inside my heart and mind so that it can be reaped to give to others. This is the heart of Growth Farming. There's a principle of Like Attracting Like and that's certainly something that every one of my friends who are past guests on the podcast have in common. We all believe that joining forces to help others is the path to take to succeed. Rachael is a wonderful example of just the heart and mind to do that for artists and entrepreneurs alike here.Big Takeaways In This Podcast With Rachael YamagataMy wife Mrs. Smith was very pleased to learn that, like her, Rachael is a very big cat fan. She shares a bit of insight into her love for her cats in this conversation. I thought that was just perfect. One day we'll have to find a way to get Mrs. Smith and Ms. Yamagata together to compare cat notes, don't you think?Writing relationships in their ups is not always easy, but writing about the downs comes more naturally. Some people try to figure out why relationships go the way they do instead of just complaining about what didn't work. For songwriters who dive into this side of the story, it takes on a whole new thing. We also learn why my friend William Fitzsimmons and Rachael should do a co-write together. The entrepreneurial side of art and music is certainly within the grasp of any artist who wants to be successful. However, the ball is in your court. If you want to win in this realm, you have to learn everything you can about how to be a business with your music. It's the realm of what Rachael refers to as "Artist As CEO.

Radio can be an intimate relationship. The airwaves connect the ideas from one mouth to the ears of another, with only a dial and airwaves in between. Yet this intimate relationship is inherently lopsided–only one side’s expression can be voiced and heard. When a musician steps on stage, however, the intimacy can work both ways. When William Fitzsimmons steps on stage, his beard brushing against the microphone and his four guitars waiting expectantly on stage, he is imploring the audience to join him and meet him halfway. Before a small show at the Englert Theatre in Iowa City, the gentle singer-songwriter sat down with Erasing Boundaries and dug into the art of expressing emotion.
