In this captivating podcast, join a neurodiverse father of two as he candidly shares his personal experiences and those of his children within the educational system. As a staunch supporter of inclusion, he sheds light on the challenges and triumphs faced by neurodiverse and individuals from different cultures, highlighting the importance of creating an inclusive environment for all. Listeners will gain valuable insights into the power of inclusive education, promoting acceptance, and fostering an environment where neurodiverse children can thrive. Whether you are a parent, educator, or advocate, this podcast offers a wealth of knowledge and inspiration for supporting neurodiversity in schools. About Scott (in his words) I was born and raised in California's San Joaquin Valley, not far from Sequoia National Park. The path to higher education was a meandering path through education, small business ownership, corporate life, and back to education. Creating and using digital type has remained a passion since the 1980s. I began working with type in high school, creating bitmap fonts for video games. This required learning how both printers and computer screens worked. As a member of the school newspaper staff, I configured and maintained the lab Apple LaserWriter, which was rigged to work with IBM PC XTs. Working at the local newspaper, I learned plate making, phototypesetting, and the complete production process. Rhetoric of Visual Design and Typography Semiotic analyses of designs, particularly typographical choices, and the meanings transmitted to audiences. Interested in the historical evolution of typefaces, their uses, and the symbolism embodied by typography. As a scholar-artist, I explore all appearances of text within cinema and video, both within the narrative and as framing devices. Creative Writing and the Rhetoric of Narrative on Stage and Screen Qualitative and quantitative analyses of stage and screen works to model effectiveness as defined by audiences, writers, directors, and producers. Interested in works that successfully promote social change through narrative techniques. This sixth season of Simple Stories in Spanish is inspired by requests from my listeners. Why is the raven black? 7-year-old Agapita has created a series of drawings to explain the dark feathers of this intelligent bird who just wanted to get a glimpse of his creator. This story was originally written in English by Scott Wyatt. This story is told mostly in the past tense with some dialogue in the present. Repeated words and phrases include “cuervo” (raven/crow), “dibujo” (drawing), “creador” (creator/maker), “mundo” (world) and the verbs “veo” (I see), “vio” (s/he saw), “hizo” (made), and “sería” (would be). No matter where you are in your language journey, stories will help you on your way. They discuss the impending enrollment crisis all colleges and universities are facing and talk through a few of the ways Southern Utah University is combating that enrollment drop.Featured Quotes:Well, as we go forward from here, one of the things that we need to be very aware of is that the enrollment challenges that universities and colleges around the country are facing may come to us. It’s just that Utah is a little bit behind everyone else in the declining of students coming to college because we’ve had a higher birth rate than many other places and because of the economic activity in Utah, primarily in the center of the population, the Wasatch Front, a lot of economic growth up there. But our birth rate dropped in 2008 like everybody else’s and we’re going to see some changes in 2026. And so, part of this growth strategy is to have a running head start when we know that the inevitable disruptions are going to occur in about six years.Scott Wyatt, SUU President. . . I think the most important thing that we did [at SUU] is made enrollment our focus. How to save some buses. Cecil Read stumbled across 6 Buses back in 2015. This is the official story of how they were found and who got them. All of theses buses are back on the road thanks to all the people that took the effort to gat them all roadworthy.  Don Eastman, Tony Brown, Pete Wansgard, Scott Maxwell, Scott Wyatt, Dave Kindig, Matt Dinublio

Solutions for Higher Education with Southern Utah University President Scott L Wyatt

Featured Quote: ". . . so, if there are two or three major reasons, one of the major reasons is that the Legislature funds maybe $100,000,000 every year to build new buildings on college campuses in Utah. And those campuses, not completely, but to some degree are largely vacant for almost half the year. So, they’re very, very busy for 15 weeks of fall semester and they’re very busy for 15 weeks of winter semester. That’s 30 weeks out of 52. So, there’s a lot of lost capital and they want to see us find a way to make these buildings useful all year round and if they can be useful all year round then that moderates the need for buying new buildings and this is a financial issue to them and it’s one that has caused tremendous concern for years." ~ Scott Wyatt, President of Southern Utah University Full Transcript About the 3-Year Bachelor's Degree Program

Today's Life Outside the Box episode takes us into the world of adventure coupled with academia. Scott Wyatt is the president of Southern Utah University, also known as the "University of the Parks." Being an avid mountaineer and ultrarunner himself, Scott knows the teaching power of nature and incorporates that power into every aspect of life on campus for students and faculty at SUU. This was an incredible conversation about adventure, grit, a lifetime of learning, and the healing power of the wonderful and awesome outdoors from someone leading the charge in getting college campuses to take advantage of nearby adventure.  More about Scott: https://www.suu.edu/general/president/about.html More about SUU: https://www.suu.edu/news/2016/02/university-of-the-parks.html More about the Grand to Grand Documentary: https://suunews.net/2018/12/05/running-for-hope-documentary-premie/ Save 20% off the best freeze-dried meals you’ll ever eat with Peak Refuel.
