In 2011, Tracy Young co-founded PlanGrid, which made software for construction teams. After scaling the company to 450 people and raising $69 million, it was acquired by Autodesk in 2018 for $875 million. That's a win, but Tracy and her partners didn't go for the exit because they'd reached the peak of the mountain. They cut the deal because PlanGrid was behind in the market, and they didn't know how to catch up. Three years later, during the pandemic, Tracy and her husband, Ralph Gootee, co-founded TigerEye, a RevOps AI agent that lets analysts answer questions and allocate resources based on data that's updated multiple times each hour. Last year, TigerEye closed a $30 million Series A. She describes it as “moneyball for business,” the tool she wished she'd had at PlanGrid when she was fighting entrenched competitors who were just better at enterprise sales. In part one of our interview, she explains why they started their new company up in stealth and how TigerEye reflects her vision of what enterprise software should accomplish. She also shared what she'd learned as a CEO her second time around about building early teams and managing a hybrid workplace. Subscribe now to get part 2: Her approach to work-life balance The unique challenges women founders face while fundraising How to run a board meeting in 60 minutes, and The importance of gaming out worst-case scenarios. Runtime: 23:09 EPISODE BREAKDOWN (2:53) TigerEye's origin story: “We wanted a second chance, and that became a big desire of ours.” (5:11) “There's certain decisions that only leadership and the CEO can make.” (7:58) “We just really sucked at selling to the enterprise.” (9:53) How to manage customer discovery while you're in stealth. (15:53) Tracy's tactics for managing a remote-first team effectively. (19:25) When it comes to personnel, it's “much harder to be mediocre at a small startup.” (21:21) Why she still interviews every new hire at TigerEye. Baseball is returning! Allen's (@amedlock1) team gets started next week but the Cardinals are already in Jupiter as images of hurlers hurling and hitters hitting flood the internet. Daniel (@C70) gets a chance to sit down with Viva El Birdos editor Jason Hill to talk about some of the things that are starting to come out of camp. Is Nolan Arenado throwing players under the bus? What kind of leadership is the team looking for? There's also some talk about the reconstructed bullpen and who might (and might not) be a part of it along with what Jason's looking for as spring training games get underway shortly. Plus you can't have Mr. Payroll on without talking numbers and whether the club could/should have spent more! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Have you had a lifelong vision to establish your own orthodontic practice, only to find obstacles such as financial constraints, roadblocks, and a scarcity of available practices hindering your pursuit? In 2020, Dr. Maggie Law embarked on her entrepreneurial journey, and she is eager to divulge insights into her experience. Maggie will candidly discuss the advantages of managing your own practice, shedding light on the positive aspects and the hurdles she encountered along the way. Tune in to this conversation, and you'll find inspiration and see Maggie's apparent joy for seeing her dream come true. Remember, there has never been a better time to be an orthodontist.IN THIS EPISODE:[0:00] Dr. Leon introduces today's topic: Starting a Practice from the Ground Up with Dr. Maggie Law[3:03] Maggie is introduced and shares her educational background and how she started her practice in 2020[9:25] Maggie shares the reasons she wanted to have her own practice[12:58] Maggie discusses how she controls her overhead costs and the financial decisions in opening a practice[19:00] Maggie answers a caller's questions regarding the benefits of having your own practice, and Dr. Leon shares some advice[24:10] Maggie shares the challenges she has faced, and she leaves the listeners with adviceKEY TAKEAWAYS: [8:29] The first step in opening a practice is to find a location. It's important to research other nearby practices and, sometimes, decide how far you want to be from your home.[9:24] There are many orthodontic practice startups now, and many reasons contribute to orthodontists taking that road. One is that in the long term, the orthodontist wants to be able to make their own decisions about their career and their business. [11:36] Doctors are not selling their practices to recent graduates like they did in the past. They are selling to large OSOs because they can sell for more money. Consequently, as a recent graduate, you must open your own practice. RESOURCE LINKSPeople + Practice - WebsiteLeon - EmailAmy - EmailPeople + Practice - EmailMaggie Law - InstagramOrthodontics Startups - FacebookQUOTES: “I think one of the main reasons orthodontists want to have their practice is that we are hard workers, high achievers, goal-oriented and ultimately, working for somebody else long term is not what makes us happy.” Dr. Maggie Law“I always say that being an associate is great until one day it's not. And then when you get to that day where you're like, wow, I could be working hard for myself, or I can be working hard for somebody else, it's like this flip, and I think most people don't choose to do startups because it is the harder path.” Dr. Maggie Law

Welcome to to episode 31 of First Principles! If you've been listening to us for a while, you'll notice that this was supposed to be an off week for us as a fortnightly show. We used to release new episodes every other Thursday. And last Thursday was our episode with Ritesh Agarwal of OYO Rooms. But starting this week, First Principles is now a weekly podcast. We're going to bring you a fresh conversation every Thursday. But in a slightly different way. Well, the supply of truly original, accomplished and candid founders and business leaders in India is what we believe, a finite resource. So while we'd love to – at some point – have a roster of guests talking to us every single week, that isn't possible right now. And so, we're now increasing the duration of our conversations with the leaders we meet to roughly two hours each. Only to split it into two distinct conversations and episodes. That's where this episode comes in. A couple of weeks ago you heard our episode with Karthik Jayaraman – the co-founder and CEO of WayCool Foods, an agri-tech start up that distributes and processes fresh produce, grains, staples and milk. It was a wonderfully candid and authentic conversation in which Karthik spoke about complementing, instead of disrupting; treading lightly while making decisions; and starting up at 40.In fact, we'd urge you to check out the episode – or, if you'd like to go through the full transcript. You can click here to do so. But what you didn't hear in that conversation is what we're releasing today as episode 31. We talk about why Karthik took such a big risk at 40 by jumping from automobiles into a completely different sector, agri-tech. He also reflects on his career, what got him here, and what keeps him going. We talked about who Karthik is – as a leader and a CEO. What are the habits that he's picked up? What has he been reading, and why? We've tied all of this together for today's episode – a Part 2, on Karthik's life, career and values.
