Dan's first of two stories is centered around a school nurse who claims her encounter literally ended her career. It's very intense, and not fun to think that what she claims to have witnessed could be real. For his second story, Dan will share the haunted lore of South Carolina's Oakwood Cemetery, and an encounter that took place there. Lynze gives us two spoopy tales and one heart-warming story of confirmation. Her first story takes out to the woods where a bunch of kids party with the unknown. Then, someone is joined in bed by a not-so-comforting visitor. And finally, a beautiful story of a mom speaking to her son from the great beyond. In this interview with Tom Morris, a veteran of orchestra management whose career included leadership roles with the Boston Symphony and the Cleveland Orchestra, conductor Devin Patrick Hughes provides a comprehensive look at the inner workings of orchestral institutions, the evolution of their management, and the crucial role of music in their success. Morris's journey from a percussionist to a top-level administrator offers a unique perspective, and his reflections provide valuable lessons for anyone interested in the performing arts. One of the most compelling aspects of the interview is Morris's discussion of how his musical background shaped his management philosophy. He emphasizes his deep understanding of musicians' lives, having experienced firsthand the challenges and demands of performing in an orchestra. This empathy enabled him to build trust with musicians and approach labor negotiations with a unique perspective. Morris's belief that "ultimately these institutions are about the music" underscores the importance of passion and artistic integrity in organizational leadership. The episode also explores the historical evolution of orchestra management, particularly the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Morris recounts how, before the 1970s, the orchestra relied on simple postcards for subscription renewals. He explains that over the seventies and eighties, the percentage of the budget earned from ticket sales gradually fell. This shift necessitated the development of marketing and fundraising departments, leading to a significant increase in administrative staff. Morris shares fascinating insights about the Boston Pops, emphasizing that it was founded in 1885, before Arthur Fiedler became its 17th conductor in 1929. The Boston Symphony created the Pops to provide more employment for musicians and to perform lighter music for a broader audience. He discusses how the Boston Symphony transformed Symphony Hall into a "beer hall" to accommodate a more informal setting for the Pops concerts. He explains that in the early days the Pops sold blocks of tickets to community groups and did not have to focus on individual ticket sales. He also recounts how the popularity of Arthur Fiedler was enhanced even further by the "Evening at Pops" television series. Morris details the process of selecting John Williams as Fiedler's successor, explaining that Williams was chosen for his musical integrity and knowledge of the symphony orchestra. Furthermore, the interview addresses the crucial dynamic between management, the music director, and the board of directors, which Morris refers to as the "Bermuda Triangle.” Morris suggests that this structure can function perfectly if the right people are in those roles and are bound by a common vision. He also emphasizes that having a collaborative culture is essential, but that collaborative decision-making should be avoided. Morris stresses the importance of clear lines of authority and not settling for "good enough" when hiring. He also shares that when hiring he uses Jim Collins' three C's: competence, character, and chemistry. These points underscore the need for strong leadership and a shared vision in any successful organization. Morris also touches on the importance of thoughtful programming. He humorously mentions his collection of "dumb programs" and emphasizes the importance of carefully considering the combination of pieces in a concert. He contrasts examples of bad programming with one of his favorites, a concert he organized with Christoph von Dohnányi, which combined pieces by Ligeti, Wagner, and Bruckner. This conversation highlights that thoughtful artistic direction is an essential element in the success of an orchestra. Thank you for joining us on One Symphony. Also der Schöpfer. Merken sie was? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

We discuss some of the episode's best scenes such as Olivia's talk with Broyles when she returns to work, her breakdown in her apartment, and her incredible monologue at the end that should have (but, of course, didn't) earn Anna at least an Emmy nomination if not a win. The riveting season 2 finale's cliffhanger finally comes to a dramatic climax in “Entrada” when Peter learns the truth about who “Olivia” really is and his actual Olivia finally finds a way home. Joined by guest Michael Hoover (whose interpretation of the show's theme you will hear!), we discuss all of our favorite moments from this incredible episode (such as Walter's “vagenda” line and the incredible dialogue between characters like Olivia and Colonel Broyles) and the heroic sacrifice that Colonel Broyles makes in the Redverse. This is such a phenomenal episode, and we are also thrilled to share some great feedback from listeners like Anna (not Torv), Eric (or Eric from Pennsylvania as you prefer), Patty from Canadia, Geoff (xforce11), and ShelkyBean! We've had more guest mixes than usual the last 6 months and that is a great thing because it means we all get to hear some amazing music and amazing mixes like this one. This new mix comes from Matthew Ramolo, who records as Khôra. There is a new Khôra album that just dropped in April called "Gestures of Perception" and is described this way - "The album weaves ritualized instrumentals with alien textures and resonant melodies, inviting listeners to transcend into uncommon consciousness." You can find the new album here - https://khora.bandcamp.com/album/gestures-of-perception-3 I was unfamiliar with the music of Khôra, but one listen to the new album and I was all in for a guest set. This mix is so very propulsive, it draws you in and drives you forward with layer upon layer of rhythmic intensity. Here's what Matthew says about this mix: "This assemblage of material was selected primarily on the basis of substantiating the sonic and conceptual universes that my most recent Khôra release is in lineage with. The vast majority of the pieces presented are percussive or propulsive, but also circular in nature and in one respect I was seeking a fundamental rhythmic presence or energy among my troves of collected music that could be traced across various artists and presented as a single typology or modality that tenders itself in various guises through a cast of contemporary and historical voices. Functionally, the mix pursues a particular genealogy of percussive music across various genres, cultures, histories, technologies, and interpretations which initiates a kind of meditative dancing. Within the outline of this non-linear genealogy, ancient ritualistic and tribal tendencies flower within the unconscious regimes of the body even as the mind and body are provoked to find new appreciations and applications for these emboldening forms of musical intelligence which persist through time but are mutated, conditioned, and understood by the nuances of the listener and their temporal circumstances." Thanks to Matthew for putting together this unique journey. His album is out on the Marionette label and you can find more of their fine releases here - https://marionettelabel.bandcamp.com/ Cheers! On this episode of ROCK DOWN SOUTH, we had the pleasure of speaking with Glen Bridden, lead vocalist of the hard rock and heavy metal band 2 Shadows. This band is probably one of my favorite new bands out there right now and they produce some really great music that is both catchy and super heavy. Plus, they are totally over the top theatrical in their performance and band image. Glen may look a little scary in his music videos, but he's a really awesome and nice guy when you sit down and talk with him. We talk all about how the band started and the new single “Marionette” that they released with The Veer Union.Follow 2 Shadows:Website - https://www.2shadowsofficial.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/2shadowsofficialInstagram (Glen) - https://www.instagram.com/gb_clarkeFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/2shadowsofficialFacebook (Glen) - https://www.facebook.com/glen.briddenTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@2shadowsofficialTwitter - https://twitter.com/2ShadowsbandYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@2shadowsofficialSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/artist/5mdiygu3OgrNzMREgzdy4jApple Music - https://music.apple.com/us/artist/2-shadows/1533173941Amazon Music - https://music.amazon.com/artists/B01LX9D129/2-shadowsPandora - https://www.pandora.com/artist/2-shadows/ARgvbX2nbdrpX6XIHeart Radio - https://www.iheart.com/artist/2-shadows-31334727Deezer - https://www.deezer.com/us/artist/11042584YouTube Music - https://music.youtube.com/channel/UCyRUCSN_lOxrP54Gg0SsO7QFOLLOW ROCK DOWN SOUTH:Website - https://www.rockdownsouth.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/rockdownsouthFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/rockdownsouthTwitter - https://twitter.com/rockdownsouthSTREAM HERE:Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/4bFp0Sto6EeJaPlrgQDHEfApple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/rock-down-south/id1528008275YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@rockdownsouthGoogle Podcasts - https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cDovL3JvY2tkb3duc291dGguY29tL2ZlZWQvcG9kY2FzdAAmazon Music - https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/01df1ad4-fd7a-48fd-9998-3664e243e585/rock-down-southPandora - https://www.pandora.com/podcast/rock-down-south/PC:51570IHeartRadio - https://iheart.com/podcast/72331957
