For some, it finds it's rhythm in the carving of wood or the molding of clay or the capturing of an image or the raising of offspring. For the wordsmith, abstract symbols on a page are gathered to form a word which combines with others to import meaning which then become the backbone of the song or the poem and the listener becomes the vessel into which beauty and meaning are whispered into life. So much about which to write… so many topics… so much beauty… and yet this episode  we turn our bloodshot eyes towards the songs that salute the innocuous pleasures of getting high on some decent weed. That's right folks, if you were looking for some small morsel of intellectual nourishment, oops! This month we celebrate the songs that extol the wonders of weed.

That's right... many a great rock song often centers around an automobile of some sort. It hasn't always been that way, has it? Most of you listening to this know that there was always a hierarchy in who got to choose the music to which the entire family would be listening. The most notable of example of this was the car radio. The driver always had first dibs on the station we had to listen to and woe be unto him that tried to switch from that station without written consent from Congress. Same was true for many of us that had that one radio in the kitchen or family room in the house where we grew up. This month, Jerry and I take on the formidable task of selecting three songs that MUST be on any road trip playlist that we might make. As you can imagine, our individual playlists for any road trip would be pretty long, so boiling it down to our three must-haves was as an exercise in futility. We had tons of songs…but for this show, while we will discuss dozens, we will only highlight three each. You will need to check out our Spotify playlist for this episode to hear what will undoubtedly be a work in progress. So, sit back and enjoy this month's episode…Hittin' The Road. Please enjoy the Spotify Playlist for this episode:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4hIuyduLflDTxWP6w7683R?si=a20676bd6ea84062

It is like looking for your own shadow. It's been there all along, but we have become so accustomed to it that it is now a part of how we live, but rarely acknowledge. We're talking about the influences that are the village that helped us become who we now are. In this particular case, we are talking about our musical influences. Why do like the music we like? How did it come across our radar in the first place? Who made a musical choice in their own life and chose to share it with us? In today's episode, Neighbor Jerry and I search out these folks and the sounds they brought to us which we still hold dearly today. Join us as we search our backgrounds and try to give thanks to those folks who put us, "Under the Influence."Enjoy the Spotify Playlist for this episode:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4PgYUIp35Knqjy7H5D3RlX?si=0c4ec85291be4938

Music and meals should always coexist. Whether it's in the preparation stage or the actual sitting down stage, there is always a place for good music to cohabitate a good meal. The selection of the music will likely be guided by the menu itself. That's where the fun begins. This month, Neighbor Jerry and BillyBobb travel to Norse country up in Story City, Iowa and invade The Upper Story Studio. This quaint little apartment sized studio is one of the coolest places to enjoy live music when the world is not at war with a crippling disease. Robyn Anderson, the genius behind The Upper Story Studio joins the gents as they ask her to join them in creating a great meal and bring to it those strains of joyful noise that will make a good evening into a great evening. We look again to the marriage of food, drink, discussion and music to make our world a better place. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on many occasions used a modern revision of the words of abolitionist minister, Theodore Parker, when he told us, "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." In today's episode, we join our guest host, Brian Fox of Fox Brewery in West Des Moines as we seek to understand just what we mean by social justice and what the role of music is in that search. More specifically, what role did music play in our own lives to help us develop at least some sense of morality in regard to social justice. Heavy topic, but a great discussion...after the first three beers had disappeared. Please consider visiting Fox Brewery (103 South 11th St. / West Des Moines, IA) and chat it up with Brian and his patrons. We're sure you'll enjoy the visit. As always...thanks for listening.Feel free to enjoy the companion Spotify playlist for this episode.
