To "Jones" for something is to have an unusual need for it. Cheech and Chong once described in song a Basketball Jones. Many movies from the 60's and 70's explored the seamy side of society with flics about characters needing a fix or a Jones to keep themselves going. In today's episode, we talk about the desire to pick up and visit or move away from where you are to a place that sounds a whole lot better. Have you ever stopped to think about all the cool things that come out of Texas? Yeah... me neither. That being said, however, this month finds one of our favorite episodes as Neighbor Jerry and I took to the open highway and ended up in the Lone Star State with just enough beer and whiskey to manage a decent bribe. We took advantage of my cowboy friend, Tater Chip, and put together a highly interesting episode that focused on songs about Texas. We each went through a bevy of our favorite tunes about the state, and eventually we created our personal Mt. Rushmore list of great songs about Texas. My wife and kids think I'm a classic. I am not entirely certain that the guffaws at this compliment really sell the title. But, it's true, I guess. I've been around for awhile. Is that all it takes to make something a classic? I think there is more to it. Let's look at music. Just because it is 200 years old, doesn't automatically make a song into a classic. As we travel through life, we oftentimes bump into some situations that could have been handled in a better manner. From these situations, we hopefully learn a lesson and are able to avoid those types of unfortunate mistakes if we find ourselves staring at them again,  down the road a piece. When you think you have a favorite song,  you can convince yourself that it might always be your favorite song. But what if someone comes along and takes that great song and turns in a cover that somehow transcends the original? Believe it or not, it happens all the time. Here are some of the songs we felt were as good as the original...or just a little better. Here at Three Drinks In, we try to keep close track of all the folks that help us out. Especially the folks down here at The Iowa Tap Room. The music to which we are drawn generally reflects various situations where the quality of these people is brought into focus. There is so much history in the art of rock and roll, that it's difficult to find where one phase begins or another leaves off. Who were the artists or what are the songs that have most clearly demonstrated these seismic shifts? These are questions that are NOT for the faint of heart. In the world of music, some songs are meant to be heard over and over…and over…and over…well, you know what I mean. We all have those moments when being alone is a good thing. You can breathe in and out without the everyday pressures stampeding across your brain. Might be in the evening hours on the veranda watching the stars climb into the sky...might be in you kayak rolling across a calm lake. If you are so inclined, you might have a drink sitting next to you and you might choose to put on some music that helps you understand that whatever is weighing you down is a universal feeling. Others have been there in some form or another and sometimes just the sound of that special singer or band can help bring you to a place of inner peace like nothing else. In today's world, most people and kids especially have the luxury of being able to pop in a couple of ear buds and stream up a playlist on their phone and voila, they are the commander of their own musical starship. It hasn't always been that way, has it? Most of you listening to this know that there was always a hierarchy in who got to choose the music to which the entire family would be listening. The most notable of example of this was the car radio. The driver always had first dibs on the station we had to listen to and woe be unto him that tried to switch from that station without written consent from Congress. Same was true for many of us that had that one radio in the kitchen or family room in the house where we grew up. The big folks got to make the choices and we were just along for the ride, like it or not. Turns out, at least for some of us, those tunes still resonate. When Neighbor Jerry randomly chose this topic, I knew we'd be having fun. As by-products of the 1960s, the two of us have special recollections of the events that were constantly unfolding on our native soil and in a small jungle 8,000 miles away. We saw turmoil...we saw resistance. We saw signs of hatred...we saw attempts at peace. And all around us, what we saw with our eyes was being washed clean by what we heard with our ears. The music of the 60s dramatically influenced the way we looked at the world around us. We listened and we learned...and we moved, ever so slowly into adulthood. The music of that decade is etched into our collective soul. Join us as we step back into that wild period of history and celebrate some of the music that stays with us yet today. Pilamayaye is a Native American term used to express thanks. In this episode, BillyBobb and his Neighbor Jerry look to the culture of the Indigenous Americans in an effort to "give thanks" for their contributions to what is the tapestry of American music...specifically to rock and roll music. Theirs is a deep and rich history of pain and injustice that is carried forward in their original music. To this day, that influence is heard in much of the music we choose to enjoy.
