Tommy Emmanuel – Australia's Guitar Genius

A Breath of Fresh Air

When people talk about the greatest guitarists of all time, names like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page often come up. But in the world of acoustic fingerstyle guitar, few names resonate louder than Tommy Emmanuel. Hailing from Australia, Tommy has spent his life redefining what one person and one guitar can do — creating soundscapes so full and expressive, you'd swear there's a full band on stage. But it's just Tommy, his guitar, and a heart full of music.Born in 1955 in NSW, Tommy was destined for a life in music. By the age of four, he was already strumming along on a homemade guitar, inspired by the country music on the family radio. When he was just six, he and his older brother Phil were already performing professionally, touring rural Australia as part of the Emmanuel family band. After the sudden death of their father in 66, the Emmanuel family relocated and Tommy's passion for the guitar only deepened. He didn't receive formal training. Instead, he learned by ear, copying the sounds he heard and developing a unique style shaped by necessity, emotion, and endless hours of practice. If there's one name Tommy Emmanuel reveres more than any other, it's Chet Atkins. The legendary guitarist's fingerpicking style — where melody, bass, and rhythm are played simultaneously — blew Tommy's mind as a child. From the moment he heard Atkins' music, Tommy knew he wanted to master the same technique.Years later, not only did Tommy meet his hero, but the two became close friends and collaborators. In one of the greatest honors a guitarist can receive, Chet Atkins named Tommy a Certified Guitar Player (CGP) — a title he gave to only a handful of musicians worldwide. Their 1996 collaboration, The Day Finger Pickers Took Over the World, showcased both artists' brilliance and earned a GRAMMY nomination.Though he played in bands during the 1980s — it was Tommy's solo work that truly revealed his genius. Armed with a single acoustic guitar, Tommy became a one-man orchestra. He played melody, bass, harmony, and percussion all at once, creating dynamic performances that are equal parts musical and theatrical. From dazzling renditions of Classical Gas and Somewhere Over the Rainbow to heart-pounding originals, Tommy's concerts are unforgettable.Over the decades, Tommy has become not only a global guitar icon but also a tireless ambassador for fingerstyle playing. He's released over 30 albums, toured relentlessly across six continents, and collaborated with legends including Mark Knopfler, Jason Isbell, Jake Shimabukuro, Molly Tuttle, John Knowles, and many others.Tommy Emmanuel doesn't just perform — he teaches, encourages, and uplifts. Many students admire his technique, but it's his heart-led approach that sticks with them. Tommy's life hasn't been without challenges. Like many who spend their lives on the road, he struggled with addiction earlier in his career. But he's been open about those difficult years, crediting his recovery and ongoing sobriety to a mix of faith, family, and a renewed connection to the purpose behind his music. His story is one of resilience, not just in music but in life. He's spoken publicly about mindfulness, presence, and living with gratitude — all of which shine through in his playing. Now in his late 60s, Tommy Emmanuel shows no signs of slowing down. He continues to tour internationally, sell out shows, release new music, and connect with fans of all ages. Whether he's playing on a small club stage or headlining a major festival, Tommy pours everything into every note. There's a reason people call him a force of nature. Send us a textDavid Tilmon has lived in Colorado his entire life. Growing up, his parents encouraged him and his siblings to try something musical. He remembers first trying piano, but taking lessons and practicing, he never connected with the instrument. His parents still encouraged him to pick an instrument, so he decided to try playing a guitar in their house that hadn't been played for a while. He started lessons with an instructor who exposed him to various kinds of music, encouraging his interests and guiding him through styles he hadn't known about before.Tilmon remembers a turning point for him being the first time he heard the song “Classical Gas.” When the song, an instrumental piece written and originally performed by Mason Williams, played on the radio, he realized that the guitar could still be a powerful instrument by itself. From there, he shifted into fingerstyle playing and focused on instrumental music. Currently based in Berthoud, his instrumental stylings blend folk, classical, jazz, Americana, and even rock influences. He's worked instrumental interpretations of acts such as The Beatles, Queen, and Talking Heads into his shows, taken inspiration from guitarists such as Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkins, and written original instrumental compositions, releasing his debut album Formative in 2021. DAVE EDMUNDS ROCKABILLY LEGEND 'THE LOST INTERVIEWS' EPISODE 8 Guitar hero DAVE EDMUNDS has never followed music trends, and throughout what Edmunds jokingly remarks as a “semi-retired” music career, has probably been more devout and grateful to the original rock and roll format than any other musician. Edmunds recently released his new album entitled ‘Rags & Classics' via the MVD Entertainment Group. It's an all-instrumental masterpiece that displays Edmunds' proficient guitar work along with his brilliant multi-instrumental and production skills. Recorded in his home studio, most of the cover tracks on the new album have never been performed as an instrumental and are extremely difficult to implement as a one-man band.  I really enjoyed ‘Rags & Classics,' Edmunds did a remarkable job handpicking singles that are classics but rarely relished. Some of the more notable tracks are the Brian Wilson &Tony Asher “God Only Knows,” and the Elton John &Bernie Taupin ballad “Your Song,” Both tracks are remarkable instrumental renditions while acquainting the listener to a fresh prospective to an ageless classic. ‘Rags & Classics' delivers an eclectic mix of captivating musical gratification … you'll be delightfully swayed by Edmunds' intricate instrumental renderings of Mason Williams' “Classical Gas,” Procol Harum's “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” tracks from Dave's guitar heroes … Chet Atkins “Black Mountain Rag,” and Merle Travis “Cannonball Rag,” and a surprisingly but phenomenal finale to an exceptional album, Mozart's Symphony No.40 in G Minor, Molto Allegro. Everyone will truly enjoy ‘Rags & Classics' by guitar legend Dave Edmunds. ... (5) Stars! DAVE EDMUNDS, Welsh guitarist, singer, songwriter, and producer has collaborated with some of the greatest musicians the world will ever know, including longtime pal George Harrison. Edmunds is a 1950's rock and roll purist and remains a loyalist to this day. After his stint with the blues/rock band Love Sculpture, Edmunds scored big with his cover hit “I Hear You Knocking” (1970), a song written by Dave Bartholomew & Earl King and first recorded by Smiley Lewis in 1955. Edmunds' rendition added authentic rock and roll dynamism and landed at #1 at Christmas on the UK charts and #4 on Billboard's Hot 100 in the U.S.  It sold over three-million copies, was awarded a gold disc, and became a rock and roll standard worldwide. In 1976, Edmunds began collaborating with British musician/singer/songwriter/producer Nick Lowe (Brinsley Schwarz) on several albums. Lowe and Edmunds were signed to different record labels and couldn't record together as ‘Rockpile' until 1980 when they released Seconds of Pleasure, their only album to feature the ‘Rockpile' band name. Drummer Terry Williams and guitarist Billy Bremner were also in the group. Critics and music enthusiasts adored Rockpile. Edmunds describes Rockpile's short and sweet musical career as a party band for four years which they never took seriously. Rockpile was also hailed as a band that laid the groundwork for ‘new wave.' Between 1976 and 1981, Dave Edmunds released four albums on Led Zeppelin's Swan Song Records. After Edmunds and Lowe went their separate ways, Edmunds collaborated and produced albums for an assortment of friends and musicians including … Paul McCartney, King Kurt, Stray Cats, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Status Quo, the Everly Brothers, Johnny Cash, and the Flamin' Groovies. Edmunds also collaborated with singer, songwriter, composer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist and record producer Jeff Lynne of the Electric Light Orchestra. Edmunds released a song written by Lynne entitled “Slipping Away” which became a Top 40 hit in 1983. In 1985, Edmunds arranged and became the musical director of Blue Suede Shoes: A Rockabilly Session, a televised concert held in London, England, featuring … Edmunds, Carl Perkins George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Eric Clapton. It was the first public performance by George Harrison in more than ten years. Dave Edmunds was selected to play in Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band for tours in 1992 and 2000. Studio albums: -Love Sculpture: Blues Helping (1968), Forms and Feelings (1970) -Brewers Droop: The Booze Brothers (recorded 1973, released 1989) -Rockpile: Seconds of Pleasure (1980) -Dave Edmunds: Rockpile (1972) ,Subtle as a Flying Mallet (1975),Get It (1977),  Tracks on Wax 4 (1978), Repeat When Necessary (1979), Twangin (1981), D.E. 7th (1982), Information (1983), Riff Raff (1984), Closer to the Flame (1990), Plugged In (1994),Hand Picked: Musical Fantasies (1999), Again ( 2013), Rags & Classics ( 2015) I had the rare pleasure of chatting with David Edmunds recently about his new all- instrumental cover album ‘Rags & Classics,' the inception of “I Hear You Knocking,” Rockpile, Nick Lowe, Carl Perkins, George Harrison, my infamous ‘Field of Dreams' question and much-much more! I'd like to dedicate this ‘Lost Interview' to my good friend, fellow broadcaster, and music enthusiast Tom Cobb. Enjoy the legendary music in heaven and rest in peace brother! Support us on PayPal!

Three Drinks In...where wisdom and truth intersect

My wife and kids think I'm a classic. I am not entirely certain that the guffaws at this compliment really sell the title. But, it's true, I guess. I've been around for awhile. Is that all it takes to make something a classic? I think there is more to it. Let's look at music. Just because it is 200 years old, doesn't automatically make a song into a classic. There have to be some other intangibles that raise it above it's contemporaries. So... what do you think will be considered a ROCK CLASSIC in 200 years? Jerry and I have some ideas. Why not grab a beverage and join us as we take a look at this topic at Three Drinks In. Here's the the Spotify Playlist for Episode 042

Welcome to episode 83 of Activist #MMT. Today I talk with 10th-year MMT activist, Andy Berkeley. Andy has a PhD in marine sedimentology, and is a marine scientist and oceanographer by trade. He's also the co-author of the 2020 paper, , which is published by (or GIMMS). This is part one of a two-part episode, but it's also part two of a larger seven-part series with all three co-authors, first individually and on a personal level, and then ending with a joint interview with all three, where we discuss the paper in depth. In today's episode, Andy and I discuss some decidedly non-economic topics. For the first half of part one, we talk about the now half-century long Israeli-Palestinian conflict. (Here's a link to __PART_TWO__ with Andy. A link to all seven parts can be found __HERE__.) Since the 1970s, the UN General Assembly has voted to affirm the fact that Israel is illegally occupying Palestine. This, in addition to the fact that Israel is clearly the stronger party by orders of magnitude, calls into question the popular notion and official narrative, that Israel is nothing more than a passive and long-suffering, dainty-little-flower of a victim. On the other side of this narrative is Palestine, serving the role of the melodramatic supervillain, seemingly doing nothing but perpetually alternating between launching missiles at Israel and twirling their overly-long mustache. I'm a Jew but not religious. I grew up in a family, however, that subscribed strongly to exactly these ideas – that Israel is 100% the victim and Palestine 100% the bad guy. Questioning Israel and its leaders in any way is essentially treated by some as an act of betrayal. My speculation is that Israel is seen by many Jews as the only home on earth for the Jewish people. This is such a powerful thing that it justifies excusing the behavior of the Israeli leadership and ignoring the suffering caused in service of preserving that home. In any relationship, the idea that that one party is 100% in the right, and the other 100% in the wrong, is the stuff of cartoons, not reality. Further, the assertion that the by-far stronger party is the victim, when that so-called victim has been occupying the territory of its so-called aggressor for 50 years, is a highly suspect one in my view. In the second half of part one, Andy and I greatly lighten the mood with another non-economic topic, this time, music. I'm a classically trained singer, and for the past six months, I've been learning guitar. Andy has played piano and bass guitar for most of his life, and we have a fun and kind-of-exciting conversation about lots of varied topics: how to sight read and learning about music theory, how we were trained, the styles in which we were trained versus those we choose to listen to, the many YouTube teachers who have influenced us, and more. You'll find a few samples of our playing in today's episode, and we both thank you for your forgiving and understanding while listening. At the very beginning of today's episode, you heard a brief sample of Andy's piano and bass playing. You'll find the entire piece, along with another, after today's closing music. You'll also find links to the several musicians and songs we mention, in the show notes. Next week in part two, Andy describes his life before knowing about MMT and how he discovered it from an actual stranger on a train. Someone he now knows well, Chris Cook, overheard Andy's conversation and interrupted and interjected the fateful words: "Banks don't lend deposits and governments don't spend taxes.” But that's next week. For now, here's part one of my conversation with Andy Berkeley. Enjoy. Resources Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel, by YouTube/Shutup and Play The version of Blackbird that Jeff learned, . A link to all seven parts can be found __HERE__.) Since the 1970s, the UN General Assembly has regularly and overwhelmingly voted to affirm the fact that Israel is illegally occupying Palestine. Although this episode has little-to-nothing to do with MMT, it provides important context for learning and better understanding MMT. The academic concepts cannot be separated from those who promote them. Today is about those who promote them, and what interests them. Enjoy. Ladies and gentlemen, I don’t think we’re overstating that today we’ll be presenting you with one of he greatest presidential phone calls of all time. And believe, me, we’ve listened to a lot of them. Sure - even as we point out here on the show - they can’t all be winners. When you’re dealing with United States presidents and found audio, you never know what you’re going to get. But we think you’ll be pleasantly suprised by todays call - and it might even merit a relisten or two. Even more interesting, the phone call in this episode is the polar opposite from our last episode. While last week we tuned into President Nixon calling the astronauts on the moon, this week we have President Johnson calling aquanaut Scott Carpenter at the bottom of the ocean, some two hundred feet down! The date? September 26, 1965. The occassion? Aquanaut Carpenter had just broken a record for being submerged the longest with the Navy’s underwater experimental laboratory, Sealab II. The thing is, though, the aquanauts in Sealab II were breathing a very special mixture of air to help with conditioning themselves to the underwater conditions and dives. Their atmosphere was composed of a large part of the gas Helium. And if you’ve ever sucked up a balloon to make yourself talk funny, I think you can see where this is going…. So grab a balloon, take a deep breath and hit that play button!

Click here for a transcript of this episode. Let me open up with an apology for the delayed show. Those who know me well know that there was a medical issue in the family that distracted me, and that's got to come first, right? For me, "Classical Gas" is one of those songs that passes in and out of my consciousness. I forget about it for a long time, and then I can't get enough of it for awhile. And when I did that trivia question last week about instrumentals, "Classical Gas" returned to my radar and I said, "Ooh, I gotta do this one!". Coincidentally, a listener happened to request that I cover the song, and I was only too happy to oblige, having already started the research. (My reply to him was "boy are you in for a surprise.") This is the video that Williams re-scored for its use on the Smothers Brothers' Comedy Hour. Try to picture it using Beethoven's Fifth Symphony; I don't think it works nearly as well. (Also, this video--which was posted to YouTube by Mason Williams--sounds like a slightly different mix, but I could be wrong on that one.) And I didn't promise you this in the show, but I'm going to link it here anyway, because I like it so much. This is the cover of "Classical Gas" by Vanessa Mae from 1995: And here is the episode itself, for those who like to listen or download from here: Click here to become a Patron of the show.
