As Gen Z slowly but surely unearths gems in film history, one of our beloved Gen X films, Less Than Zero, always seems to escape their discovery. This is because the film is not available anywhere- when it is streaming for a few months on MAX, my various text threads light up, but alas, it leaves as quickly as it comes. One of my top 10 gifts ever received was the Vinyl LP for my Birthday 5 years ago and they can pry my burned DVD of the film from my cold dead hands. It's one of my all-time favorites and I am not alone. Everyone knows that this is Robert Downy Jr.'s best performance, that fans of the Brett Easton Ellis novel hated it, that Jami Gertz' performance was widely criticized (not by me- I love it) and that Brad Pitt is famously in the movie as a random party guest, but let's look deeper into the design, the cinematography and the soundtrack. In this episode, we begin looking at the creative elements of this film that no one will discuss with me. No one. So here I am, crowd-sourcing for as much info as possible to put into one place. Kelli and I scoured what is out there and are parsing it into 2 episodes. If you are out there and worked on this film, please know I have reached out to find you and have heard back that you will not talk about the film or I haven't heard back at all and would absolutely love to. This Gorgeous Film was assembled by: Director: Marek Kanievska Starring: Robert Downey, Jr., Andrew McCarthy, Jami Gertz, James Spader DP: Edward Lachman Production Designer: Barbara Ling Costume Designer: Richard Hornung HMU: Deborah Figuly, Adam Christopher, Barbara O'Neill, Angelo Di Biase 00:00:00 1987's Less Than Zero 00:03:20 Depicting Addiction in Film and Robert Downey Jr.'s unforgettable performance. 00:05:48 Robert Downey Jr. interview clip 00:09:16 Impresario Rick Rubin and his first soundtrack- Less Than Zero 00:11:37 Class Consciousness in Production Design For more insights and interviews, check the show notes and stay tuned for a follow-up episode as we continue to uncover the mysteries of Less Than Zero. PipemanRadio talks with Christian of Savage Grace about their new album and what a masterpiece itr is. We discussed how the musicianship and talent has gotten better. The album has the foundation of 80's Savage Grace with a modern musicianship to it. They also discuss the old days and how Pipeman became a casualty of the LA Metal Scene.On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Chris from Savage Grace. After many years, they have reconnected, and Pipeman is excited to hear about Savage Grace's new album, which he thinks is the best they have ever produced. Chris is glad Pipeman appreciates their new music, as they have put a lot of effort into creating it. Chris mentions that despite people saying that Savage Grace's next record will not be as good as their previous albums, the band's music just keeps getting better, and this new album is no exception. Pipeman commends the incredible vocals in their music, which he says give him chills. Chris explains that the goal of the new album is to recreate the feeling of 1978 when bands played arena shows all over the US, such as REO Speedwagon, Ted Nugent, and Molly Hatchet. Chris wanted to create that ambiance and feeling in the new album. He also wanted to incorporate threads of the old Savage Grace music in the instrumentals, such as Saxon, Motorhead, and Priest, to bring people back to the late seventies and early eighties. Chris mentions that they have updated the themes lyrically to be more relevant to today's society, as the world has changed since their previous albums. Pipeman agrees that the new album is a modernized version of Savage Grace's old music, with many relevant themes for 2023. He notes that while many bands nowadays still rely on their old music, Savage Grace has managed to modernize their sound while still retaining their originality. Chris agrees that they have updated their music without losing their musical identity. Be sure to check out the new album as soon as it comes out very soon, with the video for Stealing My Heart coming out on May 5th, which is going to blow you away so be sure not to miss that one. The recent Cyber Attack on Tucson Unified School District systems has been confusing for some, Andy talks with Mike Lettman, CISA Region 9 Cybersecurity advisor about what it means and how this and other Ransomware attacks occur. Mike explains how this may have happen and how anybody could be a target when it comes to data. Mike tells us about the formation of CISA, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency in 2018 and how cybercriminals target and why they target K-12 Schools. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on August 7th 2022 These days I'm often told that, when it comes to my thoughts on things, and the emphatic stances I tend to take on events that seem not to bother other people in quite the same way, or, indeed, vice-versa, I need to loosen up a little, and learn to be a little more flexible. This seems to be especially pertinent when it comes to the small matter of the acquisition and storage of the television series which I have accumulated over the years and still want to watch, or share my insights upon. Why, I am often asked, in this era of streaming and downloading, do you still feel the need to get hard copies of all these things? Why are you so attached to the shiny disk in all its formats, and, when it comes to those boxes of old videotapes that still sit mouldering in the darkest corners of your increasingly cramped and cluttered little house, hiding behind the piles of books and CDs and magazines that also seem increasingly anachronistic to some, can you still not bring yourself to get rid of them? And, to be honest, there are a lot of people, probably a lot younger than me, and who grew up in a different era of digital accessibility, who would roll their eyes impatiently at this strange, perhaps slightly desperate, need to cling on to physical objects in order to enjoy watching certain television series of the kind I watch. And yes, whilst certain shows (because there's one born every minute), have tempted me to single, double, and even triple dip their releases through VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray and more, quite a lot of the television and films that I choose to watch in the pursuit of bringing you VISION ON SOUND each week are not widely available in any other format, and some of us are still very grateful to the companies that choose to make their products available to us in these various formats. Whilst I've not yet been persuaded of the wisdom of the resurgence of the Vinyl LP as a music-playing choice, and I have been looking at ways of retrieving data from some of my old VHS collection through digital conversion, I still get a small thrill at the announcement of a brand new blu-ray set crammed full of delightful looking VALUE ADDED MATERIAL, or even a DVD release of a series that I've never actually heard of, or which I genuinely never believed was likely to ever be seen again. So this week, I'm joined once again by PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI himself, curator of THE SHY LIFE PODCAST and we take a delightful journey through the upsides and downsides of the curious world of collecting PHYSICAL MEDIA in a digital age, a topic prompted, mostly, by PAUL extolling its virtues in response to an article in the national press which seemed to imply that this is something of an eccentric attitude for us to have. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.
Do you consider yourself a music lover? If so, the question remains, have you ever experienced music reproduction from a quality stereo system with a turntable and Vinyl LP record? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/patrick-ball/message

Miss Pat, one of the matriarchs of Jamaican music, co-founder of Randy's Records & Studio 17, as well as VP records, joins us to talk about her 60-plus years in the Reggae business. We discuss her new book that started as a scrap book for her grandchildren and became a 200 page 5 pound coffee table book full of never-before-seen photos and untold stories from the golden age of Jamaican Music. We talk about the ways that her time working the counter at Randy's Records helped her develop a keen ear for what tunes would hit with the Reggae-buying public, her relationships and friendships with virtually every Jamaican artist in the 60s and 70s, and much more. Her stories are captivating and inspiring. For those of us of a certain age, was there anything more relaxing in our years of innocence and escapism than wandering off to the local record store and flipping through countless racks of vinyl LPs? Not for me, at least. I was fortunate enough to have a great place to go hunt for new or sometimes used records and just avoid the responsibilities of my teenage years. The downside was only the spending of money that didn't come easily. The upside was usually an hour's worth of vinyl euphoria once the needle dropped. But which one to choose? What would help me make that difficult decision? The listings of the tracks? Maybe...but almost always it was the beauty of the cover art that would catch my attention and make me explore the album even further. Ah what a life.Join my neighbor Jerry and I as we relive those thrilling days of yesteryear and discuss our personal vinyl collections in terms of the beauty that we found on the covers, which often times matched that of the music itself. Please enjoy our Spotify playlist to hear some of the music we loved, but couldn't squeeze into this episode:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/26OGLsbmRnZoRC5v6wXJNC?si=52f7f3417fd14558

There are people who still believe that the resurrection of vinyl is a fad, a passing trend, something of which people will tire and we’ll all move on… This, frankly, is insanity…total insanity… Vinyl LP sales have been going up by double digits year-over-year since 2008…and that’s just new releases…these figures don’t include the sales of used records in record shops, at record sales, or online through eBay or sites like discogs.com… The numbers also don’t include vinyl sold at the merch table at gigs…and it doesn’t include the millions of younger people who have been raiding their parents’ collections… People are deep into vinyl and are embracing (or re-embracing) the format more and more with every passing week…why?...maybe it’s a reaction to the digital age…people want something physical, tangible, something they can hold in their hands… Maybe it’s the idea that vinyl is inconvenient when compared to digital formats…listen to a vinyl record requires physical presence and care…or maybe it’s the warm, real sound of the audio… Whatever…I’m always getting email from people who want to know more about vinyl as people want to have a closer relationship with their music collections…okay…you asked for it…here’s more about vinyl that you ever need to know…
A singer and songwriter most famous for his work on the television show Scrubs, MIGHTY QUINN (aka Quinn Walker) grew up playing Rock, Funk, Soul, and Gospel, and he presently writes music and plays shows with his live Punk band, set to release their self-titled debut album MIGHTY QUINN & THE OAKLAND RONIN in stores and online worldwide November 2, 2018. The album will also be available as a Vinyl LP, and in true Punk fashion includes a ton of leftist political messages about social justice mixed with classic upbeat tunes about love, loss, addiction, depression, and a few pirate references.
Nunja, this is Trash! The Cheating Hearts – Bad Habit 02. The Cheating Hearts – Rock `n Wrestling 03. The Cheating Hearts – Lovehater 04. The Cheating Hearts – Gimme Gimme 05. The Black Drongos – Did I Tell You 06. Plutonium Baby – The Healer 07.

These are LP records, produced between the years 1960 and 1977. We will hear influences of gypsy jazz in Reinhardt, ear-trained Montomery, zany Zappa, mahavishnu McLaughlin, modal Metheny and elegant gypsy DiMeola …as composers of the songs in this podcast. M1 Charlie Byrd Trio, Nuages. Charlie Byrd was born in Suffolk, Virginia, in 1925. He was an American guitarist playing the genres of bossa nova, brasilian jazz, latin jazz and swing. Byrd played fingerstyle on a classical guitar. His father, a mandolinist and guitarist, taught him how to play the acoustic steel guitar at age 10. In 1943 he was drafted into the United States Army for World War II, and was stationed in Paris in 1945 where he played in an Army Special Services band. Byrd's greatest influence was the gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, whom he saw perform in Paris. After the war, Byrd returned to the United States and went to New York, where he studied composition and he began playing a classical guitar. In 1954 he became a pupil of the Spanish classical guitarist Andres Segovia and spent time studying in Italy with Segovia. Byrd was best known for his association with Brazilian music, especially bossa nova. In 1962, Charlie Byrd collaborated with Stan Getz on the album Jazz Samba, a recording which brought bossa nova into the mainstream of North American music. This song, Nuages is one of the best-known compositions by Django Reinhardt. Reinhardt recorded about thirteen versions of the song, and today it is a jazz standard and a main portion of the gypsy swing repertoire. It was originally an instrumental piece. These performances are found on Vinyl LP and today’s show is called ROCK THE CLASSICS ! We will hear from Frank Zappa, Blood Sweat & Tears, Jethro Tull, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Deodato, Steely Dan, today … on ROCK THE CLASSICS. INTRO to ROCK THE CLASSICS (narrate only the names of the groups) Today we hear ROCK THE CLASSICS … we will hear… Zappa entertain us with time riddles from Stravinsky Wendy Carlos reinvents a Cantata from JS Bach, Blood Sweat & Tears soothes us….with music from Erik Satie Jethro Tull and a jazz rendition of a dance from JS Bach Emerson Lake & Palmer rocks us with Bela Bartok Deodato provides fanfare from Richard Strauss … and Steely Dan celebrates a ragtime classic from jazz great, Duke Ellington Tracks Today: M1 Petrushka (I. Stravinsky), Frank Zappa, ‘Tis The Season To Be Jelly M2 Cantata 147, 10th mvt) (J.S. Bach), Wendy Carlos M3 Trois Gymnopedies On A Theme (Erik Satie), Blood Sweat & Tears M4 Bouree (J.S. Bach), Jethro Tull M5 The Barbarian (Bela Bartok) Emerson Lake & Palmer M6 Also Sprach Zarathustra 2001, (Richard Strauss) Deodato M7 East St. Louis Toodle-Oo, (Duke Ellington) Steely Dan In today's podcast we will hear seven examples of a rock or pop artist, in one case a classical music rocker, performing classical music, and with striking interpretations, new instruments or technology, or change to the musical meter as influenced by pop or rock rhythm… produced between 1965 and 1977. M1 Song Petrushka, Album ‘Tis The Season To Be Jelly, Album Artist Frank Zappa, Composer I. Stravinsky (1911), Year 1967, Released By - Bootleg album Petrushka is a ballet with music by Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, composed in 1911. It was premièred in Paris and although the production was a success, music was reviewed as brittle, caustic and even grotesque. Two years later, in 1913, the Vienna Philharmonic initially refused to play the score, considering the score as “dirty music”. As for Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention, the album ‘Tis the Season to Be Jelly was recorded at Konserthuset, Stockholm, Sweden on September 30, 1967. Pretty cool really, because The Stockholm Concert Hall (Konserthuset) is the main hall for orchestral music in Stockholm, Sweden, it is the home to the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. Bringing us back to the design of this hall for classical music. Was Zappa compelled or inspired by this great house to include SOMETHING classical? This song, Petrushka, was originally recorded by Zappa and distributed on a bootleg album. So now, going back to the 1913 sentiment about Petrushka being “dirty music”, interesting that the bootleg album cover features a caricature of Zappa’s foot and a smelly sock. Perhaps this truly is… “dirty music”? At the time of this recording, Zappa was 26 years old, so this is very early in his recording career. Only one year earlier, in 1966, Zappa released his debut album FREAK OUT with The Mothers of Invention. And only a week before this concert performance, Frank Zappa wed Gail Sloatman, with whom he was married and produced four children, right until his untimely death in 1993. Today we hear a short rendition of Petrushka, as arranged for rock band, by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, and as performed in the Konserthuset in Stockholm, in 1967. M2 Song Cantata 147, (Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life), 10th mvt, Album Switched On Bach, Album Artist Wendy Carlos, Composer Johann S. Bach (1716), Year 1968, Released By Columbia Masterworks Records Cantata 147, is written by Johann Sebastian Bach. A cantata is a vocal composition with an instrumental accompaniment, typically in several movements, often with a choir.
This is the first post of VINYL VIBRATIONS by Brian Frederick. In today's podcast we look at Part ONE of a two-part program on JAZZ FUSION. Today, we focus on the decade of development of JAZZ FUSION during the late 1960s and into the 1970s -- during the "Golden Age of Vinyl" when many of the early works we will hear are found in Vinyl LP format. Jazz Fusion maybe not as much a musical style, but more of a MUSICAL APPROACH. PROGRAM SUMMARY M1 Gary Burton Quartet, their first album DUSTER in 1967 on RCA Records, vibraphonist Gary Burton, the song "LITANY". Gary Burton - the jazz vibraphonist from Anderson Indiana. Burton plays with Larry Coryell [guitar], Roy Haynes [drums], Steve Swallow [bass]. Burton developed a pianistic style of four-mallet technique as an alternative to the usual two-mallets. He is also known for pioneering fusion jazz. In 1967 BURTON formed the Gary Burton Quartet. Predating the jazz-rock fusion craze of the 1970s, the group's first record, Duster, combined jazz, country and rock and roll elements. M2 John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra and the album APOCALYPSE, 1974 on CBS. With the London Symphony Orchestra, with Michael Tilson Thomas conductor. The song titled WINGS OF KARMA track one side 2. This album is produced by George Martin. Recorded in London 1974. McLaughlin is flexing his creative muscles, demonstrating, convincingly, that he can compose and arrange in a symphonic format, and work in his electric instruments, the electric piano, guitar and bass, and the rock drum set with . Jean Luc-Ponty is featured on electric violin. John McLaughlin on electric guitar, Gayle Morgan on keyboards, plus 9 other members of the LSO. Very powerful, a very new musical dimension, this sound, in 1974. M3 The MOTHERS, and the album ..The Grand Wazoo, and the song "EAT THAT QUESTION", on Reprise Records, Warner Bros Records, 1972. Produced by Frank Zappa. On woodwinds Mike Altshul and Joel Peskin, Sal Marquez on all brass, George Duke on Keyboards, Frank Zappa percussion, and Guitar Frank Zappa, Drums Aynsley Dunbar and Bass-the credit shows as "erroneous"! All selections composed and arranged (and produced) by Frank Zappa. M4 Jean-Luc Ponty on electric violin and the album King Kong, the song "IDIOT BASTARD SON" by Frank Zappa, The album cover indicates "music for electric violin and low budget orchestra - composed and arranged by Frank Zappa. The electric violin has a natural footing, a solid role as a solo instrument in this new JAZZ FUSION genre. M5 Jerry Goodman and Jan Hammer the song "Stepping Tones, composed by Rick Laird on the "Like Children" album, Nemporer Records 1974. This is an interesting album from the standpoint that all of the performance talent on this record is supplied by only two persons --- Jerry Goodman on on violins, electric guitar, electric mandolin, acoustic guitar, viola and --- Jan Hammer on piano, drums, moog bass, moog lead, percussion. M6 The MOTHERS "Peaches en Regalia" live track from The MOTHERS and the "Fillmore East, June 1971" album, distributed on Reprise (Warner Bros) Records. Zappa is on electric guitar, Ian Underwood on keyboards, Aynsley Dunbar on drums, Jim Pons on bass, Don Preston on the mini-moog, and Bob Harris on 2nd keyboard. "Peaches en Regalia" was written by Frank Zappa and published by Frank Zappa Music.
This week we are talking with Janet Borgerson and Jonathan Schroeder. These avid vinyl collectors eventually realized that they were seeing themes within the albums they had, specifically with their cover designs. This lead them down the path to writing their book “Designed for Hi Fi Living: The vinyl LP in mid-century America.” We were lucky enough to be welcomed into their home to discuss their project amid their collection. It was so fascinating learning about American culture through these covers. You definitely do not want to miss this episode!

Today's Throwback Thursday looks at the continued strength of the vinyl revival. Tune in during the 8 am hour when Jeff Spurgeon plays a special vinyl track. The numbers are striking: CD sales declined nearly 15 percent last year. But vinyl sales moved in the opposite direction: up 32 percent from 2012, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Trendy retailers such as Urban Outfitters and Whole Foods are stocking vinyl records. Sales of turntables are up and artists like conductor Gustavo Dudamel, pianist Valentina Lisitsa and the Brooklyn Rider string quartet are releasing LPs. While the black disc never went away among purist deejays and audiophiles, it has made a broader comeback, especially among hipsters, college students and nostalgic baby boomers. “The whole idea of actually holding a piece of music in your hand has become sort of a quaint concept because you can carry thousands of songs around in your pocket," said Greg Milner, author of Perfecting Sound Forever: The Story Of Recorded Music. However, "if you are going to have a material object, it may as well be something that’s so far removed from digital formats.” Brooklyn Rider violist Nicholas Cords believes that vinyl records put a listener in a physical space, such as a living room or bedroom. For the quartet, "it connects us to a past, a heritage of string quartet playing that we very much admire. It was a symbolic connection to something we really love." When Brooklyn Rider released its 2012 album “Seven Steps” on vinyl (as well as MP3 and CD) the group invoked past greats like the Capet, Rosé, and Busch String Quartets, who first became known to the world through their pioneering 78 rpm releases in the 1930s and '40s. Cords dismisses the suggestion that LPs are a gimmick, noting that their creation can be painstaking and costly given the different mastering processes involved. What's more, a vinyl release is a way to connect with a specific fan base. Detractors argue that vinyl has plenty of drawbacks: it's not portable, it scratches, it warps and player needles wear out. But its advocates point out that, unlike MP3s, the sound of vinyl is not compressed and any surface noise actually adds warmth to the listening experience. “One of the reasons why people like vinyl is it imparts a kind of unreality to the sound,” said Milner. “People think of it as real but it actually gives you this thing that maybe you don’t hear in real life because in real life you’re not hearing things through the veil of hiss and noise.” But despite the love heaped on vinyl and its reported comeback, it barely moved the needle for the music industry in 2013. "Vinyl is only about two percent of total album sales, so when you talk about a revival you have to talk about it in the context of everything everyone is listening to,” said Claire Suddath, a writer for Bloomberg Businessweek. In October, Suddath reported that the number of LPs sold in the U.S. represented only 1.4 percent of all albums sold. While vinyl may not save a troubled industry – one that saw even download sales drop last year – Cords notes that it represents a link with tradition in an age when music formats can seem overly disposable. "I just don’t see vinyl going away," added Milner. “It’s a good format, it’s durable, it will last a long time.” Listen to the full segment above, take our poll and leave a comment: Do you listen to vinyl? If so, why? .chart_div { width: 600px; height: 300px; } loadSurvey( "vinyl-comeback", "survey_vinyl-comeback");
