Barry and Abigail discuss Christmas Cheers by Straight No Chaser and sample Spotted Cow and Moon Man from New Glarus Brewing Co. in New Glarus, Wisconsin, and Pickle Tickle from Barn Town Brewing in West Des Moines, Iowa. Listen to the original ¿Dónde Esta Santa Claus? by Augie Rios Barry compared the harmonies in I'll Be Home for Christmas to the harmonies in Auld Lang Syne by The Beach Boys (who were in turn inspired by The Lettermen's harmonies). We played the original Hey Santa! by The Brian Setzer Orchestra. Read the story behind the writing of Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The definitive version of You're a Mean One, Mister Grinch for Barry is The Whirling Dervishes' version, whereas for Abigail, it is the full version from the original TV special, sung by Thurl Ravenscroft. We compared Straight No Chaser's version of O Holy Night to the Tracy Chapman version and the Céline Dion version. Read more about the Christmas pickle tradition! We confirmed that “upsot” is indeed in the original lyrics of Jingle Bells! We also played a little bit of our favorite version of the song, by Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sisters. Who Spiked the Eggnog? is only Abigail's second-favorite eggnog-based Christmas song, after Eggnogorant by Terry Anderson & The Olympic Ass-Kickin Team, which you can hear on our first-ever Christmas bonus episode from 2021, Bonus: Greet the Hummels! Original Songs by Friends of the Pod! We played a bit of Straight No Chaser's version of Carol of the Bells. Up next… Who's Next by The Who, submitted to our Jukebox by Todd Sider. In this episode of ITR Live, host Chris Hagenow and John Hendrickson dive into critical discussions about local and state government spending, upcoming legislative priorities, and broader national political issues. Government Spending and Transparency: The conversation explores both state and local government spending practices, with particular attention to property tax reform. Additionally, the hosts discuss the need for better transparency in property tax statements, emphasizing the importance of simplicity and clarity for taxpayers. National Politics and Hunter Biden: Chris and John share their perspectives on recent national developments, including the potential implications of Hunter Biden's pardon. They discuss how this development could shift the political landscape, including its impact on President Biden's administration and potential strategies for Republicans heading into the next election cycle. Economic Development and Local Investments: The hosts critique local government investments in high-profile projects, such as West Des Moines' proposed $91 million water park and Dubuque's $1 million allocation to the Field of Dreams project. They emphasize the importance of responsible governance to maintain Iowa's strong fiscal foundation, citing successful measures that have led to budget surpluses and taxpayer relief. Committee Leadership and Legislative Dynamics: Chris and John provide insights into the new committee assignments in the Iowa legislature. They highlight the significance of these roles, particularly in areas like Ways and Means and Appropriations, which directly influence tax and budget policies. The hosts also share their optimism for continued bipartisan efforts to address Iowa's most pressing fiscal challenges.
Johnny Gosch, a 12-year-old paperboy from West Des Moines, Iowa, disappeared on the morning of September 5, 1982, while on his delivery route. Witnesses reported seeing him talking to a man in a car before he vanished, though no clear evidence or motive ever surfaced. His disappearance gained national attention, marking one of the earliest cases of a missing child featured on milk cartons. Johnny's mother, Noreen Gosch, became a determined advocate for missing children, pushing for better laws and protocols around child abductions and tirelessly seeking answers.Over the years, the case became surrounded by numerous theories and mysterious claims. In 1997, Noreen claimed that Johnny visited her briefly in the middle of the night, saying he was living under a different identity and still in danger, but this account was never substantiated. Other theories, including possible involvement in human trafficking and connections to a high-profile pedophile ring, emerged but lacked conclusive evidence. Despite extensive media coverage and ongoing investigation, Johnny's case remains unsolved, leaving his family and the public to question what truly happened that morning in 1982.(commercial at 10:12)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:https://allthatsinteresting.com/johnny-gosch

Last night at our Gifties for Swifties Ticket Giveaway, it was Danielle of West Des Moines who left VERY happy!
Today, we sit down with David Strege to explore how he and his partner successfully transitioned their firm to thrive beyond their tenure. David delves into the importance of letting go, serving others, and engaging in industry organizations. His insights offer invaluable takeaways for purpose-focused advisors at every career stage. In this episode, Rob, Phil, and David delve into:The importance of succession planning and determining the ideal time to start crafting your plan… it's sooner than you thinkUsing a two-advisor strategy for client meetingsPhilanthropy as part of the retirement planning conversationHow to “practice” your retirement before you actually retireAn insider's view of the future growth of the financial planning industryFostering increased public trust and confidence in financial professionalsKey Takeaways: Build your firm from the beginning with the end in mind. Understand what you want your firm to accomplish and work towards that every step of the way.You will get out of industry associations what you put into them. You should understand your client's estate plan in order to appropriately compile a comprehensive financial plan. Part of wisdom comes from making decisions, letting go, and seeing how those decisions play out. Know what you're going to do in retirement before you retire. You need to know what your purpose will be and what makes you come alive. “We spend a lot of time on philanthropic giving, because life's not about things. You try to satisfy your soul or your personality with things, but it's really when you find using your gifts to serve others, that's when you come alive.” – David StregeAbout David Strege: David Strege serves clients as a Senior CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner at Syverson Strege in West Des Moines, Iowa. Today I had the privilege of talking with Reed Rinderknecht of Foster Group in West Des Moines, Iowa. Reed brings a life experience that is tough to match, as he is the most tenured advisor at Foster Group, dating back to 1997. He also has a unique background as he's played for an Iowa Hawkeyes team that visited the Rose Bowl, competed in more than 80 triathlons, and has a love of flying, so he shares with us some of his experiences as a pilot. I hope you enjoy the conversation, and stick around for Part II where Reed tells us more about Foster Group and who they serve. And of course, don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or would like to connect with Reed. *this episode was recorded in video format, so if you'd like to watch, find us on YouTube Connect with Loren: Share More & Get in Touch LinkedIn: Loren Sherman Podcast Page Connect with Reed: Foster Group

[originally published on Patreon Jul 20, 2023 and unlocked on free side shortly thereafter; reuploading it due to the narrative continuity with the Freemasonry episodes] I couldn't help myself; not long after Monty and I did our four-part series on Freemasonry, I came into more information about the Jesters which in some ways unlocked the gates of hell. Content warning for child abuse. Monty and I discuss the disappearance of Johnny Gosch, a paperboy from West Des Moines, Iowa back in 1982, including the Jester connections. We talk about the case history. We also talk about the mayor George Mills and the police chief Orval Cooney (both Jesters), and Monty walks us through the Des Moines Register as a nexus for fascism and pedophilia. I explain the curious connection of the Gab Line and the phone company. Monty explains the appearance of Sam Soda as well as Noreen Gosch's claims, and we return to Mills and Cooney. We try to make sense of Gunderson's and Bonacci's claims. All of this led us inexorably back to Omaha. episode art by Dakota (@DEEP_RED_BELLS) Songs: [515] and People = Shit by Slipknot Gently by Slipknot New Abortion by Slipknot

In this episode, we continue the conversation with Jason Gunkel, who is a financial advisor with a West Des Moines firm called Syverson Strege. Jason gives us an overview of Syverson Strege, we talk about how they are unique and who they serve as clients, and Jason shares his plans for a podcast of his own, called Prayers & Profits. And although Syverson Strege is technically a competing firm, I have a lot of respect for Jason and the work they do. We understand that not everyone is going to be the right fit with Integrity Wealth Management, and in those cases, we'd rather point you in the direction of firms who may be a better fit. *this episode was recorded in video format, so if you'd like to watch, find us on YouTube Connect with Loren: Share More & Get in Touch LinkedIn: Loren Sherman Podcast Page Connect with Jason: Prayers & Profits- podcast coming soon Jason's Bio

In addition to being an advisor, Jason wears the hat of Chief Investment Officer at a West Des Moines financial firm called Syverson Strege. Syverson Strege has began to implement extended time off, or sabbaticals, as something their advisors can take advantage of. Last summer, Jason took his 6-week sabbatical away from work, and he was kind enough to share his experience and what he learned. And while Syverson Strege is technically a competing firm, I have a lot of respect for this group and the work they do. “Contemporary commercial music is closer to the students' everyday musical culture. There's that component of culturally relevant pedagogy that both show choir and vocal jazz meet. They are a bit more naturally motivating to a majority of students, and we honor the musical culture of the United States and our popular styles from the last 100 years when we teach these things."Ryan Deignan is Assistant Professor and Director of Choral Activities at the University of Minnesota Duluth where he leads the flagship University Singers and the award-winning vocal jazz ensemble Lake Effect and teaches voice lessons, ear training, and vocal pedagogy. Deignan is the Artistic Director of the Twin Ports Choral Project and was a fellow at the 2022 Baylor International Choral Conducting Masterclass. In addition to teaching and conducting, Deignan performs as a professional vocalist. He performed with the Madison Choral Project in 2023 and sang with the new Baton Rouge choir Red Shift in their 2020 Southern ACDA performance, where he also served as tenor soloist. Deignan sang with Dallas' Orpheus Chamber Singers and Dallas Bach Society, and community choir Denton Bach Society as tenor soloist for their performance of Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle. At the high school level, Deignan was Director of Choirs for the West Des Moines Valley High School choral program of 350 students, seven traditional choirs, two show choirs, and four jazz choirs. As we enter this Advent season, we may be faced with a new way of doing things, new circumstances, or even new grief. Sometimes the words and structure of others can help bring new life to our prayers and spiritual practices. Sometimes liturgy, the set form of a religious experience, can offer a scaffolding we didn't even know we needed. We invited Kayla Craig into our conversation about the power of borrowed prayers. When someone else's words speak to our spirits, we can experience the Body of Christ in a powerful way. This time of year, Advent, lends itself especially well to introducing "borrowed prayers" into our rhythms. We remember the saints before us and those who celebrate and remember Christ's first arrival still today. As you consider what it means to introduce liturgy into your season, we pray that it gives you a rich connection to the Church and to your own practices of remembering the birth of Christ as we wait for his return. Connect with Kayla On Instagram here and here. This is her substack and her website. A few things mentioned Kayla's new book for families, Every Season Sacred: Reflections, Prayers, and to Nourish Your Soul and Nurture Your Family Throughout the Year From Strength to Strength by Arthur Brooks Great Prayer of Thanksgiving based on Luke 1:46-55 Submitted by Rev. Nathan Williams , Covenant Presbyterian Church, West Des Moines, IA liturgylink We praise your greatness, O Lord, and our spirits rejoice in you, our Savior. You looked with favor on your unlikely servant Mary, and she delivered a blessing for all generations. You, the Almighty, have done great things, and your name is ever holy. From the depth of your compassion, you gave life to Jesus, your Son, who came to show mercy on those who need you most, from generation to generation. His perfect love showed your strength, and his humility made the proud stumble. His death cast down from their thrones the powers of death, and his resurrection lifted humanity up from the lowliness of the grave. Come upon us now with your Holy Spirit, and let your power overshadow this meal, O Most High. As we share this bread and cup, fill us with the life of Jesus Christ. May we bear him into the world once again, so that we may empty ourselves of unjust wealth and fill the hungry with good things. Make us your servant people, signs of your promise of mercy, in the name of the coming Christ. We pray in his name, saying… (The Lord's Prayer) Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Every Moment Holy A Liturgy for the Christmas Season Questions to consider Are borrowed prayers helpful for me? Do they feel comforting? Do they give words to my feelings and experiences? How might I experience a liturgical church service in a way that brings me closer to the saints around the world? How does my own faith story impact my worship style?
Is any place safe? When a child guarded by life in a wholesome, All-American community disappears, is that proof that evil is lurking around every idyllic corner? In the fall of 1982, 12-year-old Johnny Gosch disappeared while delivering newspapers in the suburban neighborhood of West Des Moines, Iowa. The mystery of his disappearance and the investigation surrounding it would go on to change his family, and the country, forever.
