Yes, you can read that title more than one way! But the way it is meant is that pastors have a variety of gifts and abilities they bring to the ministry. That was the intended theme of this episode of 3GT. But wow, how things go off the rails right from the start! Granddad jokes. …

What a fun conversation I had with Krista Kammen Lowe and Suze Allen. Krista's new play is an excellent piece that uncovers the secrecy and struggle of a family tackling the issue of eating disorders. It's funny, touching, and thoughtful. I hope you are all well during this struggle with COVID-19. Remember, we will get through this, and come out stronger on the other side. Love and Peace, Ray ----------------------------------------------- About Krista Kamman Lowe A sample of Krista's art: https://bit.ly/KristaKLowe The idea for writing Infatuation was born in the year 2000 after performing a personal piece in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival production of the play Hanging on Your Every Word, by Suze Allen. The desire to tell a fuller story about eating disorders stuck with me but it was not until I was a mother of a child with the same body and eating issues that I grew up with that I was able to finish the play. Growing up with family members who struggled with eating disorders and my own battles with a poor self-image, I hated what our society told girls/women about our bodies. The images of super models and celebrities were the ideal. But if we failed and didn't achieve this look, something was wrong with us. The transition of going from girl to woman has too much pressure. It doesn't need to be this way! We are more than a number on a scale or the size of our waist. Writing Infatuation became a deeply personal healing and an artistic way for me to express my frustration and anger about the repetitive internal voices that fill our heads with damaging thoughts. These distorted views that haunt young women leave deep scars, tear families apart, and ultimately can be deadly. ___________________________ About Suze Allen Suze Allen is a published author, playwright, teacher, dramaturg and director with credits on both coasts. She was the creator of Fresh New Works San Francisco, The Maine Playwrights' Lab and Short Works Festival, Artistic Director for the SF Writers and Actors Lab, Director for Fertile Ground Writing Studio and the resident Dramaturge and playwriting instructor at The Playwrights' Center of San Francisco. Suze Allen is a resident playwright at Three Girls Theatre and a co-founder of the company. 3Girls Theatre Company is proud to be one of the very few theater companies in the nation that produce only plays by women playwrights. 3GT seeks more than “gender parity” in the theater: the company has a vision of a world where stories told by women are heard onstage just as often as stories told by men. In other words – 3GT wants to help change our cultural mindset! Suze is a published author, teacher, dramaturg and director with credits on both coasts. Her work and the work she has directed has played the Dramatists Guild's SF Footlights, Tides Theatre, Brava Theatre, 450 Geary, The Marsh, Intersection for the Arts, Noh Space, The Phoenix, OutNorth Contemporary Art House in Anchorage Alaska and The San Francisco and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. Her show THE MANIC MAMA DANCE premiered at the Marsh Café and played Birthfest 2008. Suze co-authored the book, The Time-Starved Woman's Guide to Emotional Well Being with SD Shanti and advises writers through her company Manuscript Mentor. Suze will be directing a new play called "The Birthday Lottery" by Richard Fouts. The show opens on March 29th, 2017. The location is ZSpace in San Francisco, CA and it runs for 4 nights. Please visit Ray's Green Room to hear more episodes of this podcast or listen on Itunes.

This week on Theology on the Go, our host, Dr. Jonathan Master is joined by Dr. Barry York. Since 2013, Dr. York has been professor of pastoral theology and Dean of Faculty at the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh. However, before serving the seminary, Dr. York was sent to Kokomo, Indiana, as a church planter in 1991. Through an evangelistic and disciple-making ministry the congregation of Sycamore Reformed Presbyterian Church was organized in 1994, where Barry served as pastor until June of 2013. From 2002-2013 he also served as the administrator and a teacher for Sycamore Covenant Academy, an educational and service program devoted to preparing covenant youth for college and life. He also is the general editor of the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Journal and co-hosts a podcast called 3GT. Today Dr. Master will talk with Dr. York about a topic that has occupied his thinking and been near to his heart for some time, the health of the church. So, grab that cup of coffee and meet us at the table! Just for listening, the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals would like to give you a free resource. If you would like to win a copy of "The Church: God's New Society" an audio set from the Philadelphia Conference on Reformed Theology, go to ReformedResources.org!

Robin Bradford discusses her play, Low Hanging Fruit, about four women veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, who are living in a homeless encampment on LA's Skid Row. It's playing now through July 30 at Z Below in San Francisco. Production company 3Girls Theatre is partnering with North Beach Citizens, Compass Family Services, San Francisco Suicide Prevention and SF Coalition on Homelessness. Each Thursday night, 3GT will sponsor a community night at the theater before the show and host a discussion with these local organizations about their work and the issues facing homeless women and veterans. We also speak with Leah Lax, author of the memoir Uncovered: How I left Hasidic life and finally came home. Lax's memoir of her life as a closeted lesbian, wife, and mother of seven among the ultra-Orthodox Lubavitcher Hasidim, has resonated with people from every religious tradition, and and helped to start a secret network for queer Hasidim. She's currently collaborating on an opera based on the memoir, which was selected by both Redbook and Good Housekeeping magazines as one of the 2015 Best Books by Women. Lax will be reading from Uncovered this Wednesday, July 13 at Book Passage in the San Francisco Ferry Building. Plus the Women's Calendar and a short report on the fallout from Black Lives Matter Toronto's disruption of the Pride march there. The post Womens Magazine – July 11, 2016 appeared first on KPFA.
