Auckland FC's Jake Girdwood-Reich hopes to break the heart of his younger self come the final whistle of tonight's A-League Men's Grand Final at Mt Smart. The Sydney-born defender signed with Sydney FC Youth at the age of 12 and won an Australia Cup with the Sky Blues in 2023. But tonight he's aiming to claim victory over his former side, as Auckland FC aim to make history and claim their first A-League title in their second-ever season. Girdwood-Reich downplayed the pressure of a Grand Final clash, telling Piney that while there'll be a couple more nerves in the changing room it's ultimately still a 90 minute football game. “Nothing should change for us.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Sydney coach Patrick Kisnorbo is taking a siege mentality into tonight's A-League Grand Final against Auckland FC. They've made the trip across the Tasman to meet the Black Knights at a sold-out Mt Smart Stadium, aiming to spoil their party and take home the title. Kisnorbo took up the coaching role in March, and he told Piney the key to the team's success was simply showing the players some love, belief, and positivity. He says they've been very adaptable, great to work with, and they deserved this chance to play in the Grand Finals. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tonight is a night for the history books, as Auckland FC looks to claim the A-League title in their second ever season. They're going up against Sydney FC at a sold-out Mt Smart Stadium – the first time New Zealand has hosted a Grand Final. And watching from the sidelines is Oli Sail, a goalie for the team who was knocked out of the season in February with a knee injury. He told Piney that while it's important to enjoy the energy and excitement around a home Grand Final, it's also important to separate yourself from that and work under the notion that it's just another game. But Sail says the way the city and the media have gotten behind the team is amazing. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's the biggest day in Auckland FC's short history. Just two years into their existence, the team is facing Sydney FC in the A-League Grand Final tonight at a sold-out Mt Smart Stadium. CEO Nick Becker told Piney it's definitely a bit of a pinch me moment. He says they wanted to be competitive, wanted to win silverware, and it's an incredible feeling to be able to right, today's the big dance, this is what we've worked so hard for. It's a massive night tonight for footy fans, with Auckland FC facing off against Sydney FC in the A-League Grand Final at Go Media Stadium. CEO Nick Becker speaks about the club's explosive rise in just two seasons as momentum builds to the main event.
All hail AKLFC. The Auckland football side have gone one better than their inaugural season by booking a place in the A-League final. Arguably they have trumped last year's season already. Trumped as in surpassed, not as in the tangerine coloured, tiny handed narcissist. They've packed out Mt Smart Go Media Stadium for the final, which from tonight on will be known as The Go Media Port after the intense fan base the team has whipped up. They've put football on the lips of sports fans across the motu, they've created an energy around Australasian sport that Super Rugby must be crying over, a vitality that the Warriors have finally tapped into and The Big Bash, aahh, yeah, nah, not yet. This is not only a triumph for football, but a resounding celebration of the power of money. So it is a bit Trumpy, right? The team hit the ground running, with the flames at their feet, propelled by the required largesse of a billionaire. It has yet to be determined if titles can be bought here but following in the footsteps of many a hugely successful football team, the smell of an oily rag will not fuel any team on the road to the promised land. This is not a negative thought. This is steeped in the reality of professional sport. It's not title buying, it's arming your team with as much hi-tech ordinance as possible. The A-League salary cap is one thing, an archaic, creaky and vaguely efficient mechanism to ensure on-field parity, but the real financial flex comes with the ability to fund everything else. Well-resourced if you will. Staff, equipment, facilities. Although as chief payroll executive Bill Foley found out, much to his surprise (not ours), no amount of money can oil the wheels of Auckland city's stadium development vehicle. All of that aside, the game promises so much. Victory is the only acceptable outcome, but to not enjoy the fixture for whatever it brings, regardless of the result, is insane. Revel in it, roll in it like a pig in mud, cheer, laugh, scream. Have fun, because sport is far too important to take seriously. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's a massive day for football in New Zealand. In their second ever season, Auckland FC has qualified for the A-League Grand Final – the first men's team to qualify in New Zealand's history. Their dominant performance against Adelaide last weekend locked them into the final, and now they're set to face Sydney FC at a sold-out Mt Smart Stadium tonight. Forward Jesse Randall joined D'Arcy to preview the clash. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Auckland FC are heading for their first A-League grand final at a sold-out stadium. It's both the first time a grand final has been played in New Zealand, and the first time a Kiwi team has made it this far in the competition. Auckland FC Fan Group's Tim Adams told Ryan Bridge that the game is going to be insane. “The ability to comprehend being in a final and being in a home final after having a club for only two years, it's actually just crazy.” He says the hardcore fans are going to make sure it's an event that won't be forgotten. A history-making weekend. Auckland FC is hosting the A-League Grand Final, facing off against Sydney FC at a sold out Mt Smart Stadium. A later kick-off time has been locked in to suit the Aussie audience —8:10pm— as Auckland looks to make history in just their second season. CEO Nick Becker told Mike Hosking the later start time won't impact the team's performance – you could put it on at any time and the boys will be up for it. He says the chance to play in front of a home ground is going to drive them forward. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Auckland FC has used its underdog tag as motivation to pound Adelaide United 3-nil and make the A-League grand final. The tie was deadlocked heading into the return leg across the Tasman, but Black Knights coach Steve Corica says his team was fired up by critics saying they couldn't win. Auckland FC won the two-leg tie 4-1 on aggregate and will now meet the Newcastle Jets or Sydney FC in the grand final – a first-ever for a New Zealand men's club. Striker Sam Cosgrove found the back of the net with a penalty, and told Piney in terms of a satisfying performance, it was right up there. It's the biggest day in the Wellington Phoenix's history as the women's team readies themselves for the A-League grand final. They've risen from missing the playoffs in each of their past four seasons, to a second place regular season finish and a shot at putting the club's first piece of silverware in the trophy cupboard. CJ Bott captained the team at the start of the season before stepping aside to prepare for the birth of her child, however she's still been a big part of the team throughout the season, and will be on the sidelines tonight. She told Piney she knew the team could do it, and while they went through a lot this season, the girls have proven time and time again they can come back from anything. The Wellington Phoenix women's inaugural captain Lily Alfeld became a cult figure off the field when a back injury ended her playing days prematurely. Alfeld was the first ever signing for the team five years ago, but for the past three years she's been working for the club with community engagement. The former goalkeeper said she's still the team's biggest cheerleader as they head into the A-League Grand Final on Saturday. Sports reporter Felicity Reid spoke to Lisa Owen.
