Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse. The USL announced plans yesterday to add a D1 professional league on top of their existing USL Championship and USL League One structure. They're planning to get started in 2027 or 2028 and will have a number of criteria they'll use in determining which teams are going to be selected to join it and in earning the D1 status from the US Soccer Federation. Hopefully, the USL doesn't hurt what is a great, thriving league at the moment to chase this. The growth over the years of USL Championship, USL League One, USL League Two, the W-League, and the launch of the women's Super League, along with the growth on the academy side is one of the great success stories of US Soccer history. This new level of competition has to enhance the rest of the USL ecosystem, not take away from it. This will be one of the big stories to watch as we see where soccer in this country grows in the decade following the World Cup. The Premier League's new Squad Cost Ratio rules won't take effect yet, they'll stick with the Profit & Sustainability Rules for next season. No club in Premier League history has come back from more than 5 points back with 14 games to go, Arsenal are currently 7 points behind Liverpool. Leverkusen hosts Bayern in a top-of-the-table clash in the Bundesliga. A win puts them within 5 points of the leaders from Munich, a loss likely ends the title race. Zlatan has become irritated by Sergio Conceiçao and he's already being scrutinized at Milan. He just arrived, but welcome to Serie A. Newell's hosts Rosario Central on Sunday at 3pm in Argentina, a great rivalry to watch if you can. Use fntz.co/soccerdownhere to sign up for Fanatiz. Infrastructure and events announced around World Cup 2026, expect more of these sorts of announcements coming more frequently going forward. More high school soccer coverage on the SDH Network tonight during the Creek Cup. Two sites running, starting at 4pm. Listen by clicking the Listen link on soccerdownhere.net or by using the Mixlr app. Taking a President's Day break on Monday...More Espresso on Tuesday on the SDH Network, presented by Oglethorpe University.

Have you ever thought, "I'd love to do that, but I just don't have the money," or do you have interests or passions outside of your professional life that you've suppressed in order to advance your career? Maybe you've pushed aside personal goals, believing the myth that true success requires unwavering focus on your career alone. I decided to take a little different approach in this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast. As many of my listeners know, I started my podcasting journey in 2012, with my very first episode officially being released on January 28, 2013. The show was called, “Stepping Up to the Plate.” It told the stories of Berkshire Baseball and BIG Vision Foundation, the nonprofit youth sports organization that I founded and ran for 30 years of my life before Sandy and I started this new chapter of traveling full-time in our RV. The show ran for 267 episodes, with the final farewell episode airing on January 28, 2020. About a month later, on February 25, 2020, I released the premier episode of the “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast. During my Stepping Up to the Plate days, I was blessed with the opportunity to interview some amazing people. Some of our amazing alumni, staff and sponsors, but also some former MLB players, MVP's, World Series champions, All-Stars as well as former Olympic softball gold medalists and a women's world cup champion in soccer. Today I want to focus on that one women's world cup champion in soccer, who I was not only blessed to interview twice, but also work by her side organizing and running soccer camps for a short time. Ali Krieger recently retired from a long and storied career in women's soccer. At the International level, she was an Olympian and two-time Women's World Cup Champion, who earned 108 caps on USWNT. At the club level, she played in Germany and Sweden as well a in the United States in both the W-League and the NWSL. She played for the Washington Spirit, Orlando Pride and NJ/NY Gotham FC in the NWSL. However, the Ali Krieger that I came to know was so much more than just an incredibly talented soccer player. She was one of the most humble and genuine human beings that I ever met. She has a strong desire to use her platform to be a positive role model and give back to the next generation. So, with that being said, I wanted to share with the listeners of the Journey of My Mother's Son, the two interviews that I had conducted with Ali during my Stepping Up to the Plate days with BIG Vision Foundation. Whether you're a soccer fan or not, I am sure that you are going to find great value and inspiration in my conversations with Ali. I hope to have her as a true guest on this show someday soon now that her playing career has come to an end. I wish Ali nothing but the best in her future endeavors. To find out more about Ali, check out her website at https://www.alikrieger.com/.

In our conversation, we discussed the booms and busts of women's football in Australia, “sliding door” moments that offered alternative possibilities for women's football, and the obstacles facing the contemporary women's game around the world. In Never Say Die, Crawford and McGowan both trace the history of women's football in Australia and offer a commentary on the state of the women's game today. The first three chapters chart the development of women's football, emerging earliest in Queensland before being hobbled by the actions of men in state federations. In this way, the rise and fall of the early Australian game mirrored history of the famous English FA ban of women's football. An Australian women's led football league re-emerged in the heady days of the 1960s and 1970s, when creative and hardworking people such as Pat O'Connor, Elaine Watson, and Heather Reid opened the way for an Australia wide women's competition. In 1974, female administrators and players organized the Australian Women's Soccer Association, which under the leadership of “quiet achieving ground breakers” built the foundations for women's football today. The following year they competed in the Asian Women's Championship, but never with the same financial support as the men's side. Of course, success brought new challenges and the Crawford Report (no relation) helped to subordinate women's football again under the national federation: Football Australia. The latter chapters of Never Say Die deal with contemporary challenges to the women's game including: the organization of the W-League, pay disputes between the women's national team and the federation, injury issues among women's footballers resulting from inadequate medical facilities and improper training, a dearth of female coaches, particularly at the top level, and the trajectory of the current Matildas. Crawford and McGowan's comments in these chapters are vital for understanding the issues in women's football today and have helped to shape public debate over issues such as pay disparities, an issue that has subsequently been addressed by Football Australia. In their work, Crawford and McGowan offer a compelling and rich account of women's football in Australia. Their work is informed not only by a deep dive into the archival resources, especially the popular press, but also by interviews with many former women's players, referees, coaches and administrators. Crawford and McGowan's very readable and timely book will be of interest to people broadly interested in sport, especially those with a focus on women's sport, but also to a public audience interested in the history of the Matildas before the 2023 Australian Women's World Cup. Keith Rathbone is a Senior Lecturer at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. He researches twentieth-century French social and cultural history. His book, entitled Sport and physical culture in Occupied France: Authoritarianism, agency, and everyday life, (Manchester University Press, 2022) examines physical education and sports in order to better understand civic life under the dual authoritarian systems of the German Occupation and the Vichy Regime. Hey there Dive fans! We have a DOOZY for you this week as we deliver a special 2 parter episode. We kick things off with Azael, Kobe & Mark to chat about the first week of LCS play & then we invite League of Legends Developers Riot Phroxon & Riot TrueXY to talk about the durability update and where they see the game evolving moving forward. You may notice some inconsistencies in how they address both sections, we decided to put the League Dev discussion on the 2nd half of the episode after the initial recording, so apologies for any confusion that may cause. On the LCS side, Kobe delivers some of that sweet CLG & Cloud9 hopium, while Mark peddles some for FLY... but Azael sure wasn't buying. Then in the discussion with the League devs, we talk about the state of scaling, how regions influence balance & how items impact our perception of durability. Also, you may notice we experienced some technical issues during recording that resulted in a few times our mics going out. While we resolved the issues shortly after the 3rd time this happened, we weren't able to recover the audio after the fact. We apologize for the inconvenience & thank you for your patience while we resolve these hiccups. We weren't able to get to your questions this week, but we hope you continue to leave them in the Youtube Comments below, on Twitter or on Anchor.FM so we can cover your thoughts on the LCS as it developsThe LCS returns this Saturday with the premiere of the Zven & Berserker bot lane as Cloud9 faces Dignitas at 1:30PM PT, see you there! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-dive-esports-podcast/message
