Kon Karapanagiotidis had a nickname growing up. The boy with the unpronounceable surname was dubbed “Mr Alphabet”. As the child of Greek immigrants, the now CEO and founder of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre thus grew up with an acute appreciation of the otherness experienced by refugees, and the need to wrap your arms around such people. “You understand the importance of what we call ‘philoxenia' in Greek culture, which is to welcome and accept the stranger,” he says. “Everything I do comes from an understanding of where I come from, what I've been through, and how lucky I am to be here," he tells Konrad Marshall, senior writer for Good Weekend Magazine. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This time, we're talking about Australia's various international anti-refugee ad campaigns, which are specifically aimed at people seeking asylum. We discuss the human rights abuses asylum seekers face in Australia, the morally corrupt companies that partner with our government to create anti-refugee ads, the modern technology required to get these messages across, and what this means for us as allies to asylum seekers.  Please consider donating to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre while you are here.   Soaliha: @soalihaofficial & Linktree Mitch: @mitchs.miscellanea & Linktree Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/soaliha Email: heresthethingthopodcast@gmail.com PayPal: PayPal.me/soaliha  Facebook Group: Here's The Thing, Tho With Soaliha Podcast Group    Sources: The Park Street Refugees Don't Need Novak Djokovic's Help, They Need Yours  The Aus Govt, Evil To Its Core, Had A Comp For Short Films To Show Refugees Aren't Welcome Here  Zero Chance  Zero Chance - YouTube Channel   TBWA Worldwide - Wikipedia Ad agency behind government's film competition warning against 'illegal migration' has won ethical awards    Australia's anti-immigration YouTube videos are attempting to scare off asylum seekers — Quartz  Australian government targets asylum seekers with graphic campaign | Australia news | The Guardian Angus Campbell warns asylum seekers not to travel to Australia by boat | Australia news | The Guardian Australia: Deterrence propaganda? | Opinions | Al Jazeera

The world watched on as the Australian government ripped up world tennis number one Novac Djokovic's visa.  He was taken into detention, an urgent court hearing convened, and eventually deported.  The whole saga was over and done with in less than a week.   While Novak was in detention, in the Park Hotel in Melbourne, we learned there are refugees holed up in the same hotel.  One of them, Mehdi, has been in the refugee process in Australia for almost ten years after arriving in Australia seeking asylum as a 15-year-old.  He's still in detention, almost a decade later.   We speak to Mehdi from his Melbourne hotel room; and we also speak with Carolyn Graydon, principal lawyer at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, to find out why Mehdi and his colleagues can't – or don't – get the same rushed process as Novak Djokovic.     Todays Headlines Aboriginal flag copyright secured Omicron wave past its peak Australians in the Ukraine being told to leave Assange wins court case to challenge extradition decision Cleo Smith's alleged abductor pleads guilty   Follow The Briefing DON'T FORGET TO SIGN UP FOR THE BRIEFING NEWSLETTER. Kon Karapanagiotidis has always felt like an outsider. Growing up as the child of poor Greek migrants in rural Australia, he was bullied and subjected to racist taunts that left deep scars. But as a teenager he discovered a book by Dr Martin Luther King that changed his life. Spurred by the words he read, he decided to try and help others to heal himself. He volunteered at charities every day of the week - working at a homeless shelter one day and a suicide helpline the next. In his late twenties, he started a little food bank for asylum seekers and refugees living in Melbourne. No visitors are allowed in and no residents can go out. The risk of infection is high with cramped living conditions, shared laundries, and hundreds of people using the same lift, meaning these buildings have an explosive potential to spread COVID-19.
