Auckland FC has used its underdog tag as motivation to pound Adelaide United 3-nil and make the A-League grand final. The tie was deadlocked heading into the return leg across the Tasman, but Black Knights coach Steve Corica says his team was fired up by critics saying they couldn't win. Auckland FC won the two-leg tie 4-1 on aggregate and will now meet the Newcastle Jets or Sydney FC in the grand final – a first-ever for a New Zealand men's club. Striker Sam Cosgrove found the back of the net with a penalty, and told Piney in terms of a satisfying performance, it was right up there. Massive crowds, upsets, and an NPL Victoria team in the Australia Cup final for the first time: it was a good weekend to be a football fan in Melbourne. Josh, Lachie and Ivka dive deep into Dandenong Thunder's failure to launch at home to Hajduk. Why can't Adam Piddick's teams seem to win in the finals? And could Dandy City become the first 6th-placed team to make it to the big dance? Preston brought 2,000 raucous supporters to Jack Edwards Reserve, and banished the ghosts of their infamous 4-0 defeat in Round 20 by knocking out the reigning champions. With just one goal conceded in seven games, could a watertight defence be Preston's path to glory? Meanwhile, Auckland becomes Heidelberg's latest A-League victim, while Avondale and Luca Tevere come up just short against the Newcastle Jets. There's a full preview of this weekend's revised VPL1 playoff match-ups, and a tasty set of NPL semi finals as the Bergers host Preston on Friday before Dandy City travel to Avenger Park on Sunday afternoon. The NPL Victoria Podcast is brought to you in 2025 by Melville Bodyworks, located at 106 Melville Rd Brunswick West.
