THE MOMENT I started listening to my guest Amy Harrison’s podcast I started smiling, and it never stopped. I became an immediate fan of her advice and her outlook on life. Amy lives and shares her creative ideas and joy as a copywriter, but it is so much more than that. Her life has taken many twists and turns but creativity and being happy are the guideposts. I bet you won’t be able to take the smile off of your face either as you listen to the wisdom and inspiration Amy shares as we shift the story together.
Thank you for listening to episode 27 of Branch out with Evin Charles Anderson. The past few weeks have been filled with some amazing guests, so Tatiana and I wanted to create a special for you all. We have taken the words of wisdom segment from each of our recent interviews and have compiled them all together for you. We have Dave Gerhardt of Drift and Tech In Boston, Kaite Rosa of VentureFizz, Dan Shure of Evolving SEO and Moz and finally Shawn LaVana Marketing Professional and writer for VentureFizz. Dave: I think the biggest thing to remember is that at the end of the day that is no marketing cure for sucking. What that means is that customer experience really is the new marketing. So if you have a product or service that people don’t genuinely love, no marketing tactic or campaign with save you from that. I would start with having an awesome product and an amazing team and then worry about the marketing tactics. Kaite: I am partnered with a high school student. When she was starting to enter her junior year and was thinking about a possible career path, she thought she knew where she wanted to go. I really encouraged her to have real meaningful conversations with people doing what she wanted to do. She thought she really wanted to become a personal trainer. We sat down and talked to someone who was a personal trainer. And we also sat down and talked with someone who was a nutrition professor. Her perception was completely flipped. So I think it is really important to sit down and have conversations with a broad scope of people in the industry you want to be in. It is also important to take a variety of opportunities to help expose you to different areas that you could go in. Dan: A lot of people want to jump into social or get into blogging but you have to set up the core product and services on your website. You need a strong foundation from the very beginning. So the mistake a lot of people make is they hire a web designer, they get a developer, they build the website, they launch it and then 3 months later they call me ask if I can put the SEO into the website. That really isn’t how it works. The best SEO is done from the beginning. The SEO is one of the first people involved doing keyword research, helping to determine the architecture of the website (what the pages are, the URLs, the hierarchy, the menus, the navigation). And especially when you are dealing with e-commerce. You want to look at that aspect of SEO from the very beginning. From beyond that, now you need great content. I am not saying blog articles; I’m talking about your core product and service content. Not only should that be optimized for search but also is it at least good for users. Does it help show what your product and services are. An episode (Experts On The Wire) people can listen to is Amy Harrison, who talks about copyrighting and about great things like umbrella terms, contrast and putting humor in your copy. Or you can look at UnBounce or ConverstionXL that talk about great copyrighting and CRO. Shawn: To crib on Ben Horowitz’ product market fit being everything…I was in an early stage company, PostWire, where my main task was – they were getting signals from 5 different areas that their product could be applicable to. I think that is one of the first things you need to do as an evolving company. Figure out where your product best fits, who it is solves problems for and what messages work for that. I think one of the other key things that comes up is the focus on the user experience. It used to be an afterthought but now people are hiring UI/UX people. Once you find your product market traction, sort that out as well. If you are making a product, make it a great interface. If it isn’t a product, make every engagement with a prospect or client delightful. Seek ways to make their lives better. More information about us: http://www.WaverleyKnobs.com/about

"You have the chance to carve the career of your dreams, so dream!" Amy didn't just settle for regular copywriting gigs. She didn't just settle for speaking/training around the world. She kept 'checking in on herself' and tweaking her career path. Today she regularly hits publish on blogs, videos, podcasts and her own 'scalable' income (rather than passive) online course - alongside the client work she loves. Here Amy shares the lessons she's learned from regularly hitting publish, using content to make her, erm, content. (You kind of have to say that out loud, then it's clever huh?) Love learning from other freelancers like this? Check out the website beingfreelance.com, subscribe to the podcast and to the newsletter. Key Takeaway Points Focus on the work you like to do Keep 'checking in' on yourself to make sure you're happy and figure out how to evolve Need new skills? Learn them: if there's an area in your trade (for her sales/marketing copy) you'd like to work in, read up and then practice Skills swap: early on to help build your portfolio, do work for free for other freelancers who likewise give you their skills When clients come to you they'll be more engaged than if you pitch to them, so put yourself out there as someone they need Speaking/teaching proved her expertise Podcasting - keep going, encourage engagement with your audience Podcasts/videos on weekly basis show you have a commitment to your particular subject Be consistent with your publish days (for blogs too), you'll get better returns There's a delay to you seeing results when publishing content - keep hitting publish, stick with it, you'll get better quality clients If after a time you still don't see results, don't stop publishing, but look at what/how you're publishing and change that Making videos is closely tied to your personality - so it can really open doors to clients and speaking gigs, people feel they know you Amy makes videos with humour - it makes viewers more engaged when learning and makes them more likely to share Don't think 'passive' income, think 'scaleable' income Amy took her training resources and created a course and membership site She didn't create a community around it because that takes a lot of actual time to manage (whereas the course takes care of itself) Sometimes you have to just trust you're on the right path, stick with it Ask yourself: 'what do I really like doing?' If you follow and persue that, do what you love and work hard at it, you will rise to the top Avoid 'compare and despair' - sure, look at what others are doing, but don't let it distract you or make you feel negatively Knuckle down, keep going - You have the chance to carve the career of your dreams, so dream! In this lecture, Dr Amy Harrison from Birkbeck, University of London, aims to share findings from the field of positive psychology on the science of happiness. It also explores what makes us happy and how we lead happier lives. Psychology has tended to focus on exploring people’s problems and difficulties, looking at what has gone wrong in people’s lives rather than their resources, strengths and what might be going well. Positive psychology is a field of psychological science which has sought to promote and develop research into the factors that make people happy, the impact of focusing on strengths, having an optimistic outlook on our wellbeing, and exploring the small things that we can all do to boost our levels of happiness. Cornerstone Community Church :: Mark Kline :: Sunday, May 20, 2012 Mark Kline's message explores Daniel's interpretation of King Nubuchadnezzar's dream and not just Daniel's God-given wisdom, but also his compassion for and pleading with the king in light of his pride and impending judgment. Do we hold the same hope and compassion for sinners? God eventually saved the king, showing that He can and will humble the proud and restore the humble. Message follows a Friends Sunday announcement by Heather Reed, a building update from Rod Clarkson, and a Camp Elim presentation by Amy Harrison. (Mark's sermon begins at about 27:00 in the recording.)
