Hi, my name is Robert and I was responsible for recording, editing, and publishing the podcast for Conversations On The Coast with Jim Foster. Although Jim has now sadly passed, it feels good to keep his memory alive by sharing the programs he did over the years through this podcast. There have been wonderful interviews with authors that bring so many stories to life. I wanted to share the raw session of Jim's last interview as recorded in his 'home studio' (his dining room table!) from October 19, 2018. It includes audio in between the segments that you normally don't hear and shows how much fun the authors and us both had in doing the show. The Author is Renee Linnell and in her memoir entitled "The Burn Zone" she writes about her true life experience of being in a cult and eventually leaving, and what it taught her about how we all teach one another to treat us in our everyday lives, and the importance of learning self love.
On this special Christmas edition of Hear Ye, Hear Ye!, we welcome Jim Hancock, the Burly Minstrel of the Texas Renaissance Festival, to the show! With years of experience in music and his own Christmas band, Jim delights us with stories and songs that are sure to spread some holiday cheer to our listeners. Continuing to do multiple festivals each year As a traveling musician, Jim spends his normal festival season delighting crowds at 5 different renaissance festivals. Since the ‘80s, Jim has heard the call to strike up the band and to spread his love of renaissance music and centuries-old songs to thousands of people across the country every single year. “There are great musicians at every festival I do, and that’s why I keep doing it.” Cherishing all forms of music and musicians Although Jim has been a musician since childhood and has studied music in school, his primary love for performing comes from the imperfect, improvisational aspects. Instead of emphasizing perfection and professional training, Jim believes that musicians should be caring more about the environments and emotions they create with the music they perform. “It’s not about being perfect, it’s about being expressive and communicating.” Capitalizing on his recording abilities Affected by the pandemic as a musician, Jim had a lot of time on his hands this year and was able to embark on creating his own recording studio in his house. With experience in location recording and a passion for elevating the sounds of his fellow musicians, Jim is excited with this new opportunity to make music an even bigger part of his life. “I’ve had a great time making them sound as good as I can make them sound.” -- Find out more about Jim’s Christmas band, the Merry Minstrels, on their agency’s website. Do you like poetry? Do you care about art? Do you wonder, sometimes, how art fits into society? How creativity fits into your life? This week’s guest is Jim Natal. Jim wrote his first poem when he was in high school but let poetry go when adult demands got in the way. Jim had a successful but ultimately unsatisfying career working for the National Football League, shepherding big corporate deals, and polishing the brand. After 25 years, and in spite of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s assertion, Jim managed to create a second act for himself. Six books later, Jim is an award winning poet, teacher, and event promoter. For the last 12 years, Jim has worked to draw renowned authors for readings and interviews to the little city of Prescott, Arizona. His efforts have built a literary culture where Jim had originally found none. This week on September 25th, we’ll be watching online as Jim welcomes Lisa Ko to the Literary Southwest Virtual stage. Lisa Ko’s novel The Leavers is a 2017 National Book Award Finalist and was on Best of lists at NPR, LA Times, Buzz Feed and, yes, Oprah Magazine. The link for the event. Although Jim joined us ostensibly to talk about Literary Southwest, we wrung him dry for his insight into the purpose of poetry, that nature of creativity, and whether there is a place for art in the apocalypse. Jim also reads two of his poems, both of which are incredibly relevant to the moment. Our original interview with Jim lasted two and a half hours and was full of fascinating anecdotes, inside stories, and generous ruminations. We whittled the audio down to something a little more digestible for the average listener, but if you would like to hear the whole conversation, email us at Charles@rocketfeather.com and we’ll send you a Dropbox link to the unedited version. In the meantime, stay tuned as we talk writing, connection, and self-discovery with Jim Natal. We think you’ll finish uplifted, more hopeful, and see a pinch more beauty in your world. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rocketfeather/message
A Mighty Fortress is Our God In this last part of our sermon series on three great hymns, Dr. Jim Keck explores the reformation classic "A Mighty Fortress is our God." Written by Martin Luther just ten years after he nailed his protestations on the Wittenberg door, it has been called the Battle Hymn of the Reformation. Yet so powerful is this hymn, even Catholic churches now sing it in mass. Although Jim prefers the tune to Here Comes the Sun by the Beatles and finds "A Mighty Fortress" to be overly bombastic there is much theological ore to mine in this great hymn of our tradition. Join us at 10:30am this Sunday!

Episode 50: Woohoo! We hit our first milestone, 50 episodes and boy is episode 50 epic! Ross & James chat with Jim Pollard, one half of the super talented husband and wife team “Pollard We Are”. Originally from the UK but after traveling the world Jim and his family settled in the beautiful New Zealand where he discovered his love for wedding photography. We discuss how he does this and the hurdles he faces to capture these incredible photographs. We also chat about the equipment they use when undertaking such a huge amount of travelling during a wedding day, his Instagram followers, Jim’s thoughts on wedding albums, his printing with his Canon Pro-222 and how he prefers to offer a single shot beautifully printed than an album. In 2011 Troy Dooly joined Jim Gillhouse on ACES Radio Live as he moved from Syndicated Radio to the Internet. Gillhouse saw the future was in Podcasts and wasn't holding back. Although Jim retired from radio a few years ago, Dooly went on to do over 800 episodes. After taking off a few years to build our brand via video using YouTube, Roku and Amazon, we are back to grow a brand new Beachside CEO Podcast.

Although Jim loves dogs, he's always been nervous around pitbulls, so he talks with NFL player Danny Shelton about Danny's beloved pitty Monie, and discusses the breed with a pitbull expert from Bullseye Dog Rescue in Seattle. Also, do dogs watch TV?
Jim Norton is the reason why I do podcasts. First, he’s a world-famous comedian, recently released a one hour special on Netflix, has been on shows like “Louie” and “Inside Amy Schumer” has written two New York Times bestselling books and has appeared on countless radio shows and podcasts. But just as interesting to me...we grew up together. The first day Jim moved into town we were in fourth grade. Rather than keeping his mouth shut like anyone else just moving into town he immediately started making everyone laugh. Day one we were laughing so hard I thought my stomach was going to break. We all said out loud that day (Jim doesn’t remember but I do), “you should be a comedian”. And he did. He did! I like when my podcast combines the personal and the professional. Combines my own story with the story of someone achieving peak performance in an area of life that I love. Comedy is not just about making people laugh. And being a standup comedian is not just about “standing up” in front of a crowd of people and telling jokes. Comedy is about observing the hidden truths in life that everyone knows but nobody has ever quite articulated. And standup is about how to articulate that truth in such a way that people feel momentarily unsafe and confused (the setup), and relieved (the punchline). But that’s only one theory of comedy. There are many. And so I wanted to try it for myself. I’ve been doing it now a few times a week for two months. It’s hard! It’s the most difficult thing I’ve ever tried to get good at. So I asked Jim, who has been doing it all of his life, to come on the podcast. Here are some things I learned: Make Mistakes - listen at [8:08] I told Jim I was afraid to bomb. To tell a joke and have nobody laugh. “Bombing is what we learn from the most,” Jim said. “It’s not about how to avoid bombing. You will fall flat all the time. It’s about getting up after that.” “I left myself no safety net,” he said. “I started when I was 21. I didn’t have a diploma. I got a GED three years after I got sober. I have no high school diploma... So I knew it was going to be this or nothing.” Sometimes to survive the biggest pains on the way up, you have to fly without a safety net. You have to fall. The way to hit the top tier in any area of life is to figure out where the line is, and go beyond that line. If you aren’t failing, then you aren’t trying to be unique. You aren’t going to be the top tier. Find Time to Laugh at Yourself - listen at [14:45] Comedy is about connection. You tell something about your life, something honest and true and usually uncomfortable. The comedians job is to transform your pain. Like an alchemist. “I make fun of myself,” Jim said. “I give my own personal examples, but I think if I’m doing that at least I’m being truthful and I’m not coming from a place of thinking I’m better than that guy… like who am I?” They laugh because it’s a safe way for people to experience their own demons. You can get close enough to the shadows of your life without the fear of being overrun by guilt or shame. It’s a chance for us all to be a little more human, a little more honest and a little more free. The Umbrella Theory -listen at [28:50] Jim just started writing another book. He’s on TV. He’s touring. He’s got a radio show (Jim Norton and Sam Roberts on Sirius), he has a podcast. He works with incredible talent. And is always looking for new material from his own life. “You can’t just be lazy,” he said. “I talked to Chris Rock recently and I know it sounds like I’m name dropping, but I’m not. “That’s a total name drop,” I said. “But I didn’t mean it like that…” We talked about Chris Rock’s career. He stopped touring. He hadn’t been on the road for seven years. But yet you still hear his name all the time. He’s hosting the Oscars, testing out material at clubs, etc. To succeed in any area, right now list all the things that are skills in that area. Make sure you spend some time trying to master all the granular parts of the field you want to be unique in. The ones who master the “umbrella” of their field are the winners. Is Your Heart In It? -listen at [1:06:40] I’m going on stage once or twice a week now. I’d love if you come. Most of the time, the audience doesn’t know me. It’s hard to set that foundation. I want us to all be in it together. I asked Jim what three things should I do? Write material everyday Tape your set you do and make yourself watch it Get on stage every night (or as much as humanly possible where you know your hearts really in it) / be willing to show up Number three is true for any dream… Catch the Cycles of Comparison -listen at [46:15] I don’t have a solution to every problem in my life. I think that’s why I’m still writing… seven years after starting this blog, I’m still confessing. Jim and I talked about comparing ourselves. I make this mistake daily. I look around and see who’s on the front-page of my dreams today. "I always want to achieve what I'm not achieving,” Jim said. "I never feel like I'm doing well." I think everyone has a tendency to wonder, “what’s next”. This is sort of the problem with goals. You achieve a goal and it always seems anticlimactic because now you have to work towards the next goal. I ask myself this because since 2003 I’ve written 18 books. I’ve done at least one, sometimes two books, every year since 2003. Until now. This is the first year I’m not working on a new book. I haven’t felt the urge so I won’t force it. But I have felt the desire to get better at other things and achieve other things so rather that keep to the routine of writing another book, I’m trying to achieve success in these other areas. --- Although Jim and I went to school from ages 10 to 18, I hadn’t seen him in 31 years until he walked into the podcast studio. What a pleasure to combine the deeply personal with my professional passions. The result is always so much better as well. Because we have the story and the rapport, and we can get right down to learning the topic I love best: how to achieve peak performance in any area of life. But seeing a friend for the first time in 31 years. That’s why I love to do this podcast. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The incoming Chair for TSCPA, Jim Oliver, joined us this week on Life In Accounting: The Where Accountants Go podcast. Not Being Afraid of Risk If you've interacted with Jim before, this may surprise you somewhat. Jim is a very conscientious, caring, and seemingly cautious individual, but if you look at his career he has taken several calculated risks that ended up working out well for him in business. Although he references “five or six” other ventures that failed, he successfully built Financial Life Advisors into a well-recognized and respected financial planning organization, as well as Jim Oliver & Associates, a successful niche CPA firm that recently merged with Calvetti Ferguson out of Houston. Jim's role in the newly-merged organization is that of a Partner in their High Net Worth Practice, which matches his pre-merger specialty. TSCPA – Growth Through Service Although Jim worked in public accounting prior to starting his practice, he worked entirely in audit and then started a practice comprised primarily of tax work. It was at this point that he decided to get involved with TSCPA in order to expand his tax knowledge through both continuing education and through volunteering in tax-related committee work such as representing the Chapter on call-in radio programs answering tax questions from the public. The upcoming years with TSCPA In this episode Jim talks about some of his goals for these next few years of service to TSCPA. His overarching goal though is to help TSCPA move forward in the direction as desired by the members. Among his planned efforts are: 1) continuing to facilitate student relationships, 2) strengthening outreach to the Big 4 firms, 3) expanding communications with the Chapters, and 4) serving as a resource in any way needed by the new CEO of TSCPA – Jodi Ann LaFreniere Ray. So much more to say… Although Jim is a very humble individual, he is also a very accomplished individual. There is much more I could write about his career in particular, but in order to get the best value out of the insight he shares it's best to hear it for yourself in the audio podcast. I know you will thoroughly enjoy our interview with Jim. Please enjoy… there's more to come! Kevin Lawrence is a strategic advisor and coach to CEOs and executive teams all over the globe. Today, Kevin and I talk about keeping it together as a leader and ways not to meltdown as you try to grow your company. How do leaders keep themselves together while under the enormous pressure of running a company? In his 20 years of experience, Kevin is always fascinated by how some people can do it and have fantastic personal lives, while others are just miserable throughout their entire leadership journey. When Kevin dug further into this, there are some very famous people like Kurt Cobain and Elvis, who at the peak of their careers, had it all and then somewhere along the line, they imploded in their success. This same sort of timeline applies to successful executives, too. After working with a number of very high-performing individuals, Kevin dubbed this imploding timeline as the ‘The Dark Secret of The Boardroom.’ We all have our own Elvises and Kurt Cobains inside of us. So, Kevin’s job is to help executives find their high-performing sweet spot without all the darkness associated with it. Kevin hosted a private 2-day event with Jim Collins, the guru of business leadership and 'keeping it together.' Jim says that when we are under massive amounts of stress, we pay a 30% tax with our health. Although Jim hasn’t written about this yet, he calls this the ‘Stress and Drudgery Tax’. Steve Jobs even admitted to Jim that when he went back to Apple and still continued his work with Pixar, he paid more than that 30% tax on his health. Steve Jobs believed that those were the days where the seeds of his cancer were planted. High-performing individuals deeply care about their work, but often that’s exactly what leads to their downfall. In the mental health world, experts say that we’re only one or two life events away from a notable mental health issue. This is why when executives are going through major life-changing events, they should seek help either from a coach or therapist. Jim Mandelin was born in rural Alberta to a violent, alcoholic, Klu Klux Klan father and a teenage runaway, homeless kid who became Jim’s mother. His grandmother insisted on caring for him and he was taken from his parents to be raised on her farm from infancy until fifteen years of age. Jim never saw his mother again until adulthood. Though his grandmother did her best to care for him, she was confined to a wheelchair and his care became the primary responsibility of his father’s younger siblings. This they did with great resentment and animosity. Jim endured years of sexual, physical and emotional abuse at home and severe bullying at school. At fifteen years old he ran away to the mean streets of the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver British Columbia where he continued to be abused, selling drug for the gangs, ending up in prison and being recruited into a motorcycle gang. He became a debt collector for the gang and beat people. Life changed for Jim when at the age of twenty two he entered drug rehab where he had a drug induced heart attack and had a near death experience. Although Jim’s story is one of great trials and much sadness, he has lived to overcome a life of addiction, prison life and gang violence. With years of painful introspection and therapy Jim was able to stop his self-abuse, violent behavior and develop empathy for himself. The results of this helped Jim to quit a four package a day cigarette habit, completely change his thinking and behavior and to create a holistic health regimen for himself. With much therapeutic help Jim is now thirty-eight years clean and sober. Jim currently works as an inspirational speaker and counselor sharing his experience and hope with thousands of kids in schools and prisons each year. For the past ten years now he has also taught a course at several Universities to classes of new police officers, prison guards, border guards and parole officers on the topic of Interpersonal Relationships and the Development of Empathy. He is now living happily with his wife (Kids have grown up) in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Peter Goral interviews Jim Moss Founder of Plasticity Labs. It’s truly amazing how perspective can change everything. Laurier student and entrepreneur, Jim Moss, learned this invaluable lesson back in 2009. One morning Jim woke up unable to use his lower limbs due to a mysterious neuromuscular disease, quickly ending his professional lacrosse career. You can only imagine how challenging this would be for your “average joe”, let alone a man who has played for Canada’s National Field & Indoor Lacrosse team for many years. Some say that everything happens for a reason. Although Jim was not able to return to his original level of physicality, this turning point was the start of something new. The Smile Epidemic which then morphed into Plasticity Labs based in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. http://www.plasticitylabs.com/
SAP and Enterprise Trends Podcasts from Jon Reed (@jonerp) of diginomica.com
Recently I taped a two-way discussion on careers in SAP sustainability with fellow SAP Mentor Jim Spath. Although Jim does not work in sustainability on a day to day basis, he's one of the most influential community voices in this area and has a 20 year background as an environmental engineer in his pre-SAP life. When we taped this thirty minute discussion, Jim and I were fresh off an SAP Mentor session on SAP's sustainabilty strategy with Jeremiah Stone of SAP. We wanted to react to that session - though some of it was "not bloggable" and we kept that content out. There were other SAP sustainability events to react to also, but mostly, we wanted to riff on SAP careers in sustainability and talk about the skills and the impact we can have by greening our SAP careers.
