Welcome to the SYNC Your Life podcast episode #145! On this podcast, we will be diving into all things women's hormones to help you learn how to live in alignment with your female physiology. Too many women are living with their check engine lights flashing. You know you feel "off" but no matter what you do, you can't seem to have the energy, or lose the weight, or feel your best. This podcast exists to shed light on the important topic of healthy hormones and cycle syncing, to help you gain maximum energy in your life. In today's episode, I'm interviewing Renee Linnell. Renee Linnell is an international speaker and author of three books. She has been featured on The Today Show, BBC, NBC, NPR, The New York Post, The LA Times, and The Daily Beast (and countless others.) She is a serial entrepreneur who has founded or cofounded six companies and has an MBA from New York University; before that she was a surf model and professional tango dancer. Having an unorthodox childhood and being surrounded by death at a young age led her on a spiritual quest that took her all over the world, culminating in her ordination as a Buddhist monk (by a bi-polar guru with delusions of grandeur so she's not 100% sure the ordination counts.) What began as writing for catharsis in 2013—as she struggled to regain her sanity after being brainwashed in a Buddhist cult—turned into her first memoir, The Burn Zone: A Memoir (She Writes Press, 2018). Still on Fire (the sequel) happily and hilariously details her leap into a life she loves and celebrates the magic, miracles, and romance in her life. Both memoirs explore deep themes of self-betrayal, toxic relationships, self-love, forgiveness, why we chose bad love or lives of mediocrity, and how to shift from soul-sick to superhero. Her mission is to remind people Who They Truly Are and to reignite their passion for being alive. For more information, please visit https://reneelinnell.com. It's amazing how lost we can get in our minds. How easily other people's beliefs or opinions about us can begin to feel like our own truth. Yet what other people think is never our truth. We each have our own sovereign truth which is the key to personal peace and freedom. My guest this week, Renee Linnell, knows all too well how it feels to wake up to the shocking realization that she had lost herself after years of brainwashing from a Buddhist cult. Whether it's through the influence of others or of an addiction, trauma, or depression it can be hard to take the first steps back to yourself. Renee offers gentle and inspiring guidance on how to take that first step and move into a place of the greatest peace one can know.On this episode Renee and I discuss how to stop betraying ourselves due to low self-esteem and fear, how to move away from the messaging that we're not OK and need something or someone to fix us, and to realize that there's nothing holding us back because there are no conditions we have to meet to be worthy, lovable, and free. Renee is a former surf model, a professional Argentine Tango dancer, and a serial entrepreneur with an Executive Masters in Business Administration from New York University. She made her publishing debut in 2018 with The Burn Zone, a memoir of her experience as a cult survivor. She now has published her second book, Still on Fire: A Memoir. Ah, the unknown. Depending upon your perspective, it can be the stuff of bad dreams, of quantum physics, or of grand adventures! Sometimes it's all that and more. For me the desire to discover, the pull to KNOW, the want for MORE has been a compelling force in my life. Whether it was traveling alone into the jungle to meet a shaman in West Africa or going to graduate school in another country, fear took a backseat (well, maybe a side-seat). So when I had the opportunity to have a conversation with my guest today who has had a singular set of life experiences where the unknown, travel, inner guidance and miracles, I immediately said yes, please. Renee knows loss—her beloved father died on Thanksgiving Day when she was 15. Then, after more than a dozen years of conflict and estrangement, she lost her mother—who went missing and turned up drowned in a hotel bathtub. Renee knows devastation—when she was 33, she joined a Buddhist cult, got brainwashed, burned almost everything she owned, and nearly lost her sanity and her life. Renee stuffed down plenty of shame. Magic, miracles, travel, and romance—this is where Renee leads you in her long-awaited sequel to The Burn Zone. We often focus on and argue for our own limitations, which prohibits us from doing what we want. Instead, knowing where you are starting, what you need to do, and how to overcome the roadblocks, will lead us to action for following our dreams. 2. Being in a Buddhist cult, Renee naturally experienced negative aspects of Buddhism. When she left, she walked away with positive teachings from Buddhism such as practicing simple meditations, rather than the rigid courses she followed. Through our negative experiences, we can pick up constructive lessons or aspects. 3. We can't always see everyone's point of view, because we are all unique on different levels. Someone on the top floor can't see the point of view of someone in the basement, especially if they've never wanted to be anywhere near. It's better to spend our energy living our brightest, most thriving life while being open and receptive. 4. Renee joined the cult because she felt love was missing from her life, and was searching for something to fill it. The more we love ourselves the less we are going to let people treat us poorly. We attract the love pattern that we grew up with as children while accepting the love we think we deserve. I'm really excited to have author Renee Linnell back on JSYJ!. This is her second time on the podcast, and in this brand new conversation, we're talking about her book that came out on August 16, 2022, which is titled "Still on Fire: A Memoir." Renee first came on the show when her first book, "The Burn Zone," came out. This book was was all about how she found herself in a cult several years ago. Her new book is a delightful continuation of her amazing craft of storytelling. The themes that come through in her new book are all around trusting your intuition, manifesting things in your life, and the idea that this life is a continuation of your soul's ongoing journey. Of course, these are some of my very favorite themes and there's such joy and delight in this conversation with Renee. Spencer Schneider https://www.spencer-schneider.com/BOOK: Manhattan Cult StoryAt its core, Manhattan Cult Story is a cautionary tale of how hundreds of well-educated, savvy, and prosperous New Yorkers became fervent followers of a brilliant but demented cult leader who posed as a teacher of ancient knowledge. Author Renee Linnell returns to #ConversationsLIVE to discuss her new book STILL ON FIRE---and what it's been like to share her journey with the world.
Hi, my name is Robert and I was responsible for recording, editing, and publishing the podcast for Conversations On The Coast with Jim Foster. Although Jim has now sadly passed, it feels good to keep his memory alive by sharing the programs he did over the years through this podcast. There have been wonderful interviews with authors that bring so many stories to life. I wanted to share the raw session of Jim's last interview as recorded in his 'home studio' (his dining room table!) from October 19, 2018. It includes audio in between the segments that you normally don't hear and shows how much fun the authors and us both had in doing the show. The Author is Renee Linnell and in her memoir entitled "The Burn Zone" she writes about her true life experience of being in a cult and eventually leaving, and what it taught her about how we all teach one another to treat us in our everyday lives, and the importance of learning self love.
In this week’s episode: •How to get rid of an energy vampire •Replenishing the empath spirit •Effectively setting boundaries •Creating space for nourishing the soul
After seven years of faithfully following her spiritual teacher, Renee Linnell finally realized she was in a cult and had been severely brainwashed. But how did that happen to someone like her? She had graduated magna cum laude with a double degree. She had traveled to nearly fifty countries alone before she turned thirty-five. She was a surf model and a professional Argentine tango dancer. She had started five different companies and had an MBA from NYU. How could someone like her end up brainwashed and in a cult?
Why We Love Renee: Renee Linnell graduated Magna Cum Laude with a double degree, traveled to nearly fifty countries before she turned 35, was a surf/bikini model and a professional Argentine Tango dancer, started 5 different companies, and got an MBA from New York University. She also spent close to seven years in a Buddhist cult and ended up severely brainwashed. In her new memoir, The Burn Zone, Renee discusses her journey into "deranged and damaged" and her awakening on the other side. Her key message is: “Our difference is our destiny, and that when we stop trying to hide the parts of us that make us different, we will truly soar!" On the Pod, We Discuss: How Renee eventually found herself brainwashed in a cult, after initially wandering into a meditation seminar The parallels between being in a cult and a toxic relationship What drew her into the cult and why the leader and her philosophy was so compelling for Renee How we’re taught over the course of growing up that we’re not worthy, and how it affects us as adults Tantric Buddhist Mysticism and the other guiding principles of the cult that Renee was part of The major red flags that popped up along the way and how she trained herself to ignore her intuition The specific distinction between an uplifting, spiritual community and a group that can potentially be harmful Spiritual narcissism, and why it can lead to self-righteousness and ultimately a form of hell How the spiritual and wellness world can promote adhering to perfectionism and unrealistic beauty standards instead of actually feeling good Toxic relationships and what Renee learned about love throughout her journey How Renee ultimately discovered her purpose, and how we can work toward worthiness and love without joining a cult and going through a similar experience Why cults or other types of organizations based on power structures are so prevalent in our increasingly tumultuous world The near death experience and the learning moment that was a catalyst for Renee’s healing process and understanding she had given up her personal power Akashic Records and what we can learn from doing a reading What it took for Renee to rebuild her life and how she returned to her true self and her intuition Writing as a cathartic part of her recovery and why she decided to write the book And much more Helpful Links: Visit Renee’s website Follow Renee on Instagram and Facebook Get a copy of Renee’s book, The Burn Zone Listen to The Burn Zone on Audible Featured image credit: In Her Image Photography The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz Elizabeth Locey, who Renee did her Akashic Records reading Brené Brown For more information and to view full show notes, visit wellnesslately.com/podcast

She had "everything" going for her. How did she land in a cult? Her story is compelling and a study in learning, growing, and expanding self-awareness.

Renee Linnell's The Burn Zone is an exploration of how we give up our power—how what started out as a need to heal from the loss of her parents and to understand the big questions in life could leave a young woman fighting for her sanity and her sense of self; ultimately emerging from the battle stronger than ever.

If you've ever lost your power, and wanted to gain it back, then do we have the Burn Zone show for you. Today I'll be talking with Renee Linnell, serial entrepreneur, Argentianian tango dancer, surfer extraordinaire, and author of a powerful memoir on regaining your power, the Burn Zone. And that's just what I want to talk with her about today, about how easy it is to lose your power, and what you can do to regain it. The Burn Zone Self-Improvement & Self-Help Topics Include: What happened to Renee in her earliest years and where did her name come from? How did she end up growing up on a boat in the Bahamas? What did her childhood have to do with being brainwashed into a cult? How did she end up being a world-traveling pro-surfer, then bikini model, and then Argentinian Tango dancer? What happened in June 2006 when she walked into a meditation seminar? How did she slowly end up giving away all of her power? How did she become more isolated and give up everyone that she knew? How did she lose all of her possessions, including a brand new leather Armani jacket??? What is intermittent reinforcement? How do we all begin giving away our power? What are the steps to losing our power? How do we begin to regain our power? What's the importance of rediscovering what you love??? How do we remember who we truly are? What can we learn from repeating patterns (of giving away power) in our lives? What's the importance of taking things day by day? What's the importance of space and meditation? Renee Linnell is the author of The Burn Zone, and a serial entrepreneur. At age 33 she woke up one morning and realized that she had very unintentionally joined a Buddhist cult. What had started as a quest for spiritual learning, and finding a place that felt like home to her turned out to be an intense group well versed in brainwashing, and converting others to bring in money to help support the larger cause. In this episode Renee Linnell and I talk about: Her early love of solitude, dancing, being near the ocean, and reading Recognizing she is and was a HSP (highly sensitive person) and an introvert from an early age That all the people closest to her died by the time she was 15, leaving her with just her brother and alcoholic mother How she found herself drawn to a Buddhist teacher, after being a spiritual seeker for many years The moment of walking in to a meditation retreat and feeling like she was home The fine line of being deeply inspired, and aligned with a spiritual group AND being involved with a cult What’s brainwashing? How to get out of a “bad” situation like a cult and learn to trust yourself again The reincarnation of animals Getting in touch with your inner three year old (and what your inner child can teach you about self love) That we all have unique, beautiful gifts to share: be that an accountant or an artist Jumpstarting your joy by turning up the volume on what makes you weird or different, taking time to do the things you love, and giving back based on what you’re really good at Resources Renee Linnell’s website The Burn Zone by Renee Linnell on Amazon
Renee is one of those people I feel like I was destined to meet. We found each other through our publisher, She Writes Press after Renee signed to publish her book with them. We had an immediate connection and soon after I had the honor of being a coach and guide for Renee the year leading up to her book launch. In The Burn Zone, Renee openly and honestly shares her story — of losing her father at a young age, growing up with an abusive and alcoholic mother, to creating a successful career as a model and dancer, only to join a spiritual group “cult” that led her to burn everything that reminded her of her past (clothes, photos, everything), learn computer programming, get an MBA and create a life that felt the opposite of authentic to her. After years of having a toxic relationship with her spiritual teacher, a near-death experience in a snowboarding accident finally gave her the "Wake Up” she needed to leave and start her life anew. After picking up the pieces and going through her own personal healing from anger to forgiveness, she decided to share her story in her new memoir, The Burn Zone. This thrilling tale leaves us with a powerful message of how to own our differences and liberate ourselves from the shame we carry from our past. In this episode we discussed: What Renee learned on her first month-long book tour All about Renee’s new book, The Burn Zone Renee’s story of being brainwashed and joining a cult and how she found herself again on the other side The pattern of repeated trauma with empaths and narcissists The vulnerable journey of having people read her writing The liberation that comes with “Letting our skeletons out of the closet” How to release shame and hiding about our past What’s on the horizon for Renee next "Loving ourselves means stop making excuses for not giving ourselves the things we want in this life. Our life is so short." The Burn Zone is an exploration of how we give up our power―how what started out as a need to heal from the loss of her parents and to understand the big questions in life could leave a young woman fighting for her sanity and her sense of self. In the years following her departure from the cult, Linnell struggled to reclaim herself, to stand in her truth, and to rebuild her life. And eventually, after battling depression and isolation, she found a way to come out the other side stronger than ever. Part inspirational story, part cautionary tale, this is a memoir for spiritual seekers and those who feel lost in a world that makes them feel less than perfect.
