In the world of points travel, you're probably familiar with the concept of a unicorn award. These are flights so rare they might as well be magical, mythical creatures because your chances of seeing one are slim to non-existent. Award flights, especially long-haul business class award flights, are not all created equal in terms of how easy they are to find and book. Premium cabin award flights are like horses, zebras, and unicorns. Some are common, easy to find, and easy to book. Others are unicorns that are rarely seen and impossible to predict but beautiful and magical nonetheless. When people try to redeem their points for the first time, they have expectations that leave them feeling discouraged when they can't find the flights they want. Sometimes you want a unicorn, but you're better off trying to find a horse or even a zebra. So by the end of this two-part podcast series, you'll be able to identify which award flights are horses, which are zebras, which are unicorns, and which you can get your hands on. Amy M. Gardner, JD, CPC, ELI-MP Amy brings to Apochromatik a unique track record of working with law students as dean of students at a top 5 law school and a successful career practicing law, first as a Skadden litigation associate and later as an associate and then partner at a mid-size Chicago firm. In addition to countless hours completing stand-alone coaching trainings, she is a graduate of the Institute of Professional Excellence in Coaching. Until March, 2016, Amy was the Dean of Students at the University of Chicago Law School. Through her work as a dean of students, Amy developed an expertise in understanding the unique needs of law students and in tailoring professional education and development opportunities to their needs. Her work as a dean of students was described as “transformative” and “visionary.” In addition to counseling and advising law students on a variety of issues, she drew on her legal experience to revolutionize the way the Law School prepared students for legal practice. These efforts took the form of programs and initiatives to prepare students for the reality of the legal practice outside the classroom that are now being mimicked at other law schools. In one such effort, Amy partnered with the Booth School of Business to create the Kapnick Leadership Development Initiative, the first program at a top law school to introduce systematic leadership development to all 1Ls. While serving as dean of students, she received the Class Award from the Class of 2014 for outstanding contributions to improving the quality of student life and the spirit of community at the Law School. In 2013, she was nominated to and completed the University of Chicago's Executive Program for Emerging Leaders. She received her B.A. from Luther College in English and political science before spending two years working in Iowa politics. Amy received her J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 2002, where she served as a Topic Access Editor for the Law Review, among other activities. She earned her M.A. in Public Policy and Administration from Northwestern University in 2017. Amy spent five years as a litigation associate at Skadden in Chicago, where her extensive pro bono work was profiled by the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin and resulted in her receipt of the Chicago Volunteer Legal Services Foundation 2006 Distinguished Service Award. While an associate at Skadden, she also founded and led the Chicago Lawyer Chapter of the American Constitution Society from its first organizing meeting in 2003 to its being named the Lawyer Chapter of the Year for 2006-2007. From Skadden, Amy was a commercial and intellectual property litigator at Ungaretti & Harris LLP in Chicago, first as an associate and later as a partner. Amy’s extensive community service has included serving as president of the University of Chicago Alumni Club of Chicago from 2008-2010 and as a member of the University’s Alumni Board of Governors from 2010-2016. Her service to the University was recognized by her receipt of the Young Alumni Service Citation in 2007. In the spring of 2010, she traveled to five European cities as an American Marshall Memorial Fellow, meeting with policymakers and prominent members of the business, government, political, NGO, and media communities. In 2017, Amy was appointed to the Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Character & Fitness. She is a member of the Illinois and U.S. Supreme Court bars.

Alan had a chance to talk with Joshua Scott of Studio 8E8. Joshua has around 20 years of experience in dental marketing and he realized that dental marketing sucks. It's a harsh truth, but totally true. We discuss all about marketing in dentistry: Authenticity and storytelling in the dental space (Al is a Seth Godin fanboy) How dental marketing USED to work What is Joshua's hack to reduce expenses that you might not be using? What's his 24 hour rule? Do patients see dentists as a commodity? Can we change that? How customers see your office and creating an experience Telling the story of safety isn't going anywhere What does storytelling mean to Joshua? How important is SEO? Reviews? What's the best creative medium? Why does Joshua feel like you need to do all of it instead of focusing on one type of medium? Dental stock photography is horrible Startup marketing vs. existing practice marketing How important is branding in dentistry? Jason and Alan are joined by Dr. Mark Costes and Dr. Brad Keener for a really interesting talk. As it turns out, both of these friends of the show survived accidents that left their faces and teeth smashed up. Both of them have been pretty open about what had happened to them in the past, but we thought it might be interesting to hear about what it was like to be a patient of a big reconstruction after traumatic accidents. All professional athletes eventually face the same challenge: when to retire and what to do after retirement. For the most part, an athlete’s career is limited in time because of the physical demands of job. Lawyers on the other hand do not face these constraints. There are many lawyers who practice well into their 70’s or 80’s and some who never choose to retire. But for many law firms and for many law firm partners, this is not an optimal strategy. Healthy businesses need a healthy succession plan and after 40 years in practice, many lawyers are ready for some sort of change. As the pandemic has caused many law firms and partners to rethink their priorities, the issue of what to do with senior partners has become more timely. Firms are already under a lot of under a lot of financial stress. A lack of succession planning only adds to this. In this episode, I am pleased to welcome back Larry Stybel of Stybel Peabody. At the beginning of the year, before the pandemic became a reality for most of us, Larry and I spoke about finding happiness in the practice of law. This time, Larry and I discuss the challenges that seniority presents to both law firms and to aging partners. For over 40 years, Larry has been providing outplacement, executive search and leadership coaching to law firms and corporations. He co-authors a regular column on leadership and career management for PSYCHOLOGY TODAY. He also co-authored the book Navigating the Waterfall: Your Guide to Job Search and Career Management. Stybel Peabody received the "Best in Class" Award in Outplacement four times from the Massachusetts Lawyers’ Weekly Reader Preference Survey. I met Larry and his wife and business partner, Maryanne Peabody, 20 years ago when I was starting my own recruiting and coaching business. I was very pleased to reconnect with him last year through my business networking group ProVisors. I have really appreciated the insights Larry has been able to share with me about my own career. Larry brings years of experience in talent management and career success.
Justin specializes in hotels, motels, inns, and lodges, in addition to commercial and multifamily properties. In addition to his real estate investments, he has published, edited and written for over a dozen international investment newsletters. He launched the US version of the Fleet Street Letter, the oldest continuously published newsletter in the English Language. One of his employees was a young Porter Stansberry. Justin is the founder of Seeds of Wealth, a program for getting children to adopt good money habits from an early age. He is the editor of the Seeds of Wealth Quarterly Investment Update Bulletin. His investment approach to real estate can be summarized as follows: 1) I only buy income-producing properties at cash-flow prices; 2) I adequately capitalize each property. 3) I buy at or below market value. 4) I follow cash-flow fundamentals to avoid bubble markets. 5) I finance conservatively, preferring fixed-rate loans; 6) I choose our tenants as carefully as we choose our properties. What You’ll Learn: How Justin got started in smaller multifamily properties back in 2002 before shifting his focus into heavy value-add hotel properties in highly desirable locations throughout Florida. How Justin has been able to “stand out” from all the competitors on major booking sites such as booking.com, Travelocity. Com, and the many others Why he prefers exterior corridor hotels over interior corridor properties. What “best in class” means to Justin and what specific tangible and intangible benefits he offers to help set him apart from the competition Why Justin prefers to abandon the “Flag” also known as the national brand name, when acquiring a new hotel property. How Justin retrains existing staff members upon acquisition and allows those who won’t conform to the changes self select out versus going in and cleaning house and hiring all new staff. Why Justin involves his staff in the annual budgetary planning process. Additionally, how he gets them involved in understanding the profit and loss of each property and the significant benefits that come as a result. For over two decades, I have been reading articles in the popular and legal press about unhappy lawyers. The unpleasant issues and people that lawyers have to deal with, the lack of control over outcomes, the isolation and the long hours all add up to a population of professionals who are questioning their career choice or looking for an exit. While there certainly are a large number of lawyers who experience dissatisfaction in the law, I regularly speak to attorneys who are very happy with their career choice. I try to feature some of those attorneys in this podcast series. Sure, nothing is perfect, but for these attorneys, law offers exposure to novel issues, the chance to earn a good living and the opportunity to work with bright individuals on challenging problems. Some find satisfaction in learning about cutting edge legal topics. Still others enjoy the service aspect of practicing law or even the chance to do pro bono work. In this episode, I speak with Larry Stybel of Stybel Peabody. Since the late 1970s, Larry has been doing outplacement and leadership coaching. He has also been doing retained search for board members and the C suite. Larry has worked closely with the legal profession for many years. Stybel Peabody received the "Best in Class" Award in Outplacement four times from the Massachusetts Lawyers’ Weekly Reader Preference Survey. He co-authors a regular column on leadership and career management for PSYCHOLOGY TODAY. I met Larry and his wife and business partner, Maryanne Peabody, 20 years ago when I was starting my own recruiting and coaching business. I was very pleased to reconnect with him this year through my business networking group Provisors. I have really appreciated the insights Larry has been able to share with me about my own marketing. Larry has thought a lot about how lawyers can increase their career satisfaction. I invited Larry to talk about some of the ways lawyers can structure their work to achieve this goal.
