Scott Payne spent 25 years in the FBI, a lot of the time undercover infiltrating Nazi groups and white supremacist organizations, motorcycle gangs, etc. He busted up many plots including one Dylan Roof copycat that wanted to attack a synagogue in Myrtle Beach. He also spent Halloween night 2019 camping in the backwoods of Georgia, huddled with a cell of neo-Nazis as they slaughtered a goat and drank its blood in a ritual pagan sacrifice. In Code Name: Pale Horse (coming March 25), this retired FBI agent, crowned as the "Hillbilly Donnie Brasco," takes readers into some of the most terrifying and risky assignments in the FBI's history. They will join Scott as he goes undercover with the lethal Outlaw Motorcycle Club in Massachusetts; ventures into the mountains of Tennessee where he was on the front lines of the opioid epidemic; and travels to Alabama, where he infiltrates the Klu Klux Klan by singing and playing guitar for them as a thirty-foot cross burns, and wonders how this is his life. All the while, he managed to stay married to the love of his life, raise two girls, and spend Sundays at church, drawing on his family and his faith to get him through harrowing and exhausting assignments. This is an inspiring, emotionally honest memoir from an American hero and an unflinching deep dive into the most dangerous and pressing threats, beginning and ending with one of the most overlooked ones: the recent rise of a neo-Nazi accelerationist movement that's working to spark a race war, and Scott's mission to take it down before the unthinkable happens.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Keen On Democracy
Episode 2469: Daryl Davis on His Life with the Klu Klux Klan

Keen On Democracy

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 18, 2025 44:51

The musician and actor Daryl Davis probably knows more about the Klu Klux Klan than any other living African-American. As the author of Klan-Destine Relationships and his latest The Klan Whisperer, Davis has written about not only his infiltration of the Klan but his befriending of regretful Klansmen like Scott Shepherd (My wife, Cassandra Knight, also wrote about her dinner with Shepherd). Davis' new book should probably be entitled My Life with the Klan. But as the ideas of the Klan have become more mainstream in the last few years, so the traditional KKK itself seems like a quaint relic of a more innocent past. In the old days, you had to hide under a white sheet to say dumb things about people of other colors or faiths. Now these same dumb assumptions are being openly peddled by powerful media figures and elected politicians. Here are the five KEEN ON AMERICA take-aways from our conversation with Davis:* The power of conversation as a tool against hatred: Davis emphasizes that conversation is "the greatest tool or weapon to dismantle conflict" despite being "the least expensive" and "the most underused." His approach involves engaging directly with KKK members to challenge their beliefs through dialogue rather than confrontation.* People can change their racist beliefs: Davis firmly believes that racist ideologies are learned behaviors that can be unlearned. He makes a distinction between inherent traits (like a leopard's spots) and acquired beliefs, arguing that "what can be learned can be unlearned." He provides concrete examples like Scott Shepard, a former Klansman who completely transformed his worldview.* Understanding racism through personal experience: Davis's background as a diplomat's son who traveled extensively gave him a unique perspective on racism. Having been exposed to diversity from an early age, he was shocked when he first experienced racism at age 10, which led to his lifelong quest to understand and combat prejudice.* Core human values transcend differences: Davis believes that regardless of background, all humans share five core values: wanting to be loved, respected, heard, treated fairly and truthfully, and wanting the same things for their families as others want for theirs. He uses this understanding as a foundation for connecting with people across ideological divides.* The importance of distinguishing between ignorance and stupidity: Davis makes a crucial distinction between people who are ignorant (lacking information) versus stupid (having information but ignoring it). He believes education and exposure can cure ignorance, which is why he focuses on providing information and personal connection to those with racist beliefs.Dr. Daryl Davis is an international recording artist who has performed and toured all 50 States and around the world. He has performed extensively with Chuck Berry, The Legendary Blues Band (formerly The Muddy Waters Blues Band), Elvis Presley's Jordanaires, and many others. As an actor Daryl received rave reviews for his stage role in The Time Of Your Life, and has done film and television roles including HBO's acclaimed series The Wire. As a race relations expert Dr. Daryl Davis has received numerous awards and high acclaim for his book Klan-Destine Relationships and his award-winning film documentary Accidental Courtesy. He is the first Black author to write a book on the Ku Klux Klan based upon in-person interviews and personal encounters. His ability to get racists to renounce their ideology has sent Daryl to travel all over the United States and the world to share his methodology.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Daryl Davis a black blues musician will be speaking and performing at the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design in Lancaster Oct 4 at 3:30 p.m. Davis is currently the subject of an Independent Lens documentary. Davis says he was inspired musically by Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry. “I thought, my goodness, that's what I want to do. And what, you know, really inspired me about them was the fact that these two gentlemen and their contemporaries had made millions upon millions of people all over the world happy with their music. They had touched them.” Davis graduated from Howard University with a degree in jazz performance. He's played a lot of rock n' roll, country blues, boogie woogie, jazz, and big band swing. Davis performed with the late Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and many other artists.  He believes music is a powerful uniting force. Davis is also the author of Klan-destine Relationships:  A Black Man's Odyssey where he speaks about the power of conversation to ignite positive change, understanding hate groups in America, and how music broke down racial barriers in the 1950's and 1980's. After the performance, a guy came up to Davis praising his performance. The man told Davis he was a member of the Klu Klux Klan. That interaction posed a question for Davis. A question that has been haunting hum since he was 10 years old. “How can you hate me? You don't even know me. It fell right into your lap, and you didn't even realize it. Because who is the best person to ask? Who better to ask that question of than someone who would go so far as to join an organization that has over a 100-year history of practicing hating people who don't look like that or who don't believe as they believe? Get back in contact with that Klansman and ask him to set you up with the Klan leader for the state of Maryland. To a state leader is known as a grand dragon. It's what you and I would call a governor who heads of state, a national leader. You and I would call a president. They call it the Imperial wizard. So, I you know, I've told him myself, you know, get back in contact with that guy. Get him to set you up with the Grand Dragon interview. The Grand Dragon. Go up north. Go down south. Go to the Midwest. Go to the West. Interview other grand dragons, imperial wizards and other members. And write a book about it. Because all the books written on the Klan have been written by white people, you know, who had more access, they could sit down and interview Klan people. No black person had done that. So, I decided I would write the first book as a black author from the perspective of sitting down face to face with Klan leaders and members and interviewing them. And that's how I started.” As Davis continued to ask that question by speaking with KKK members, some became his friends, left the Klan, and gave him their robes and hoods. “And today, I own a ton of Klan robes and Klan hoods that have been given to me by active KKK leaders and members because they no longer believe in what those things stand for. As a result of these conversations.”    Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Jerry Mitchell. Credited with helping to put four Klu Klux Klan members and a serial killer into greater confinement, Mitchell was awarded a MacArthur “genius” grant and nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in journalism. Mitchell, who's a White Man, authored the book Race Against Time, which examines the history of White Terrorist violence in the “magnolia state” - much of it involving Race Soldiers who successfully evaded prosecution for killing black people. We'll examine Mitchell's coverage of more recent Terrorist violence in the state. The 2011 lynching of James Craig Anderson, who was killed by a mob of young White teens who went hunting for a black person to kill. Last year, Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker were sexually terrorized by the local “Goon Squad.” The “goons” made the black males shower together, doused them with chocolate sauce, and attempted to use a dildo on the two. We'll highlight the family connection between these two incidents, Deryl Dedmon murdered Anderson, Christian Dedmon is a convicted “goon,” and emphasize that White ignorance fails to explain this generational pattern of White Supremacist violence. We even made time for a word on the welfare queen Brett Favre, accused of stealing TANF funds with the help of his White cronies, and the late Carolyn Bryant Donham, who lived a long life of White Supremacy and lies while evading prosecution for her role in the lynching of Emmett L. He is expressive while displaying his well-groomed goatee. Alan agrees, recounting reasons why some people find this an emotive issue: cultural, religious, or industrial events.Sara confirms that Alan and Trajce often speak on the complexity of real-world events that can trigger reviews on employment; industrial; civil, and work health, and safety laws. She recalls the story, ‘The Best of Enemies,' made into a movie, about the relationship between the American Civil Rights Activist, Ann Atwater, and the Klu Klux Klan member, C.P. Ellis. In this story, a lawyer navigated complex community race relations using a mediation process called a ‘charrette.' The lawyer skilfully implemented this process, the characters achieved consensus and, surprisingly, formed a lifelong friendship thereafter. The crew, Alan, Trajce, and Sara, continue to debate the need to articulate purpose and context before determining solutions in work design. Trajce likens this to incident investigation and event analysis methods versus chasing any on-trend tool that might not suit organisational purpose.

We explore the idea of Freemasonry's ties to the British empire. Then we get into Albert Pike's life and times. To our great surprise, Albert Pike was not what we thought he would be. We're talking about his weird early life, his time in the Civil War, the Knights of the Golden Circle, the Klu Klux Klan, and his post-war career. We go through his ideas as presented in his book, Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. Then we explore the Orange Order, Job's Daughters, the Order of DeMolay, and various other historical groups. Relatedly, we raise the prospect of connections between Freemasonry and espionage. How seriously should we take the white nationalist threat in the United States? Very seriously, at least according to R. Derek Black, a young man who knows a thing or two about the US white nationalist movement. The son of a Grand Wizard of the KKK and a close family friend of David Duke, Black believes that white nationalism is no longer a fringe feature of the Trumpist Republican party. And it's this fear of the mainstreaming of overt racism that triggered Black's new book, The Klansman's Son: My Journey from White Nationalism to Antiracism, an account of his rebellion not just against racism, but against his family, particularly his Grand Wizard father, Don Black. Derek Black is an American former white supremacist. He is the son of Don Black, founder of the Stormfront online community, and godson of former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke. He publicly renounced white nationalism and chronicled his personal journey away from his family's beliefs.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators.  Nate Tarver's first day of work as a police officer in Moore, Oklahoma would leave him shocked and stunned when one of his coworkers referred to him as a nigger with a gun over forty years ago when he was issued his uniform. In an age when diversity wasn't appreciated or fully accepted, Nate was the only African American officer in a department that wasn't ready for inclusiveness. That day changed Nate forever as he would begin an uphill battle to establish himself as a peacekeeper and servant of the people. He made it his purpose to be recognized as a great officer based on his character, dedication and commitment to the people of Oklahoma and not his color, race, or ethnic background. His goal has always been to be an extension of the hand of GOD and exhibit peace, solidarity, and hope to all races and cultures. That goal would be tested when the leader of the Klu Klux Klan (who hated Nate) would need him to testify on his behalf. Find out what Nate did on the latest episode of The Movement with Mongo!

The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the fourth study session on Michael Meiers' Was Jonestown a CIA Medical Experiment. This infamous mass murder has countless parallels to our recent literary selections - Columbine, Michael Swango, and The Hart murder-suicide. The Rev. Jim Jones, a White man born in Indiana, took a thousand people from California to Guyana, South America. On November 18th, 1978, Jones killed nearly all 1,000 of his mostly black followers and Congressman Leo Ryan. A few were shot, but most were poisoned with cyanide, just like "Double-0 Swango." For nearly half a century, this event has been conventionally understood as a bunch of brainwashed black loons following a White charlatan to their demise in the jungle. Meiers' work suggests something far more nefarious. Last week, we learned about Jones' Indiana roots - including his Klu Klux Klan father. The Jones Klan lived in a number of Racially Restricted Regions within the Hoosier state - and Meiers highlights that Jones was poorly regarded by the large population of blond, German immigrants. He studied black congregations, black pastors, and religious activities in general. He used this research to deceive, manipulate and bilk his predominantly black congregations. Meiers states that for the duration of his ministry, Jones sought out black people to dominate. We heard more details about how Jones may have fabricated his medical records to help conceal his death in the massacre and we learned of suspicions that Jones may have been involved in the death of his adopted non-white daughter, Stephanie, and the White superintendent of the church's nursing home, Mable Stewart. They along with 4 others died in a ghastly May 1959 automobile crash in Indiana. Stephanie was not allowed to be buried with White people. #AcresOfSkin #MurderInMemphis #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Today I get to share with you my conversation with Patricia Raybon. Patricia is a woman who wears many hats as a writer of both nonfiction and fiction. She shares with me what it was like for her to grow up under Jim Crow segregation and how that informed her identity from a young age, and how writing out stories helped her to make sense of what she experienced from the culture at large while her faith bloomed in her own soul. As an adult, in her journalism career, she cultivated the art of listening and understanding people's history to help her wrestle with  forgiveness, the effects of racism on her life, learn to love when things got hard, and writing it all down so that the Lord could reveal Himself to her, and ultimately others, in that journey. Most recently she burst into the Christian fiction scene with her award winning debut novel All That is Secret is the first book in the Annalee Spain trilogy which follows a young Black woman in 1923 working in higher ed as a theology professor, as well as writing as a journalist. Annalee finds herself in the midst of a mystery in the wild west of Colorado, where the second wave of the Klu Klux Klan is flexing its power, and willing to do anything to keep secrets hidden. Patricia shares with me the inspiration for her female professor turned detective, the realities her story is based on, and the resilience and heart of Black women that beats through each page. She shares a little bit about the topics that come up in the rest of the trilogy such as interracial marriage, Black women's roles in society historically, female detectives as a whole, but mostly, we talk about the realities of what many people continue to face day in and day out and yet still have to persevere in their days. When we listen to the stories of others to better understand their experience, not to pass judgement, even if it makes us uncomfortable, we have such a rich opportunity to encounter God, learn more about fellow image bearers in the Kingdom of God, and consider life from a perspective we may not have had a chance to otheriwse. Rundown -   Troubadour Dave Gunders - 06:20   "Hard of Understanding" by Dave Gunders - 21:38   Bradley Onishi - 29:40   Brad Onishi is a social commentator, scholar, writer, teacher, coach and co-host of the Straight White American Jesus (SWAJ) podcast. Raised in Orange County and deciding to commit himself to Jesus and the local evangelical church as an eighth grader, he ended up in their clergy. https://www.straightwhiteamericanjesus.com/   Onishi became Oxford educated and saw things differently. As neither fully white nor originally Christian, Onishi appreciated the otherness that Christian nationalists would just as soon not put on their same upper level. Power corrupts and White people now feel threatened.    White people have rebelled against racial integration since the 1960's and much of the Republican resistance was centered in Orange County, CA, where Nixon and Reagan lived. Republicans made a fateful choice when they chose Goldwater in 1964. A new "extremist" GOP emerged.   In Preparing for War – The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism and What Comes Next, Onishi provides evidence backed insight about America's long road to Christian nationalist violence on Jan. 6, and what happens next. https://www.amazon.com/Preparing-War-Extremist-Christian-Nationalism/dp/1506482163   Learn about Onishi's upbringing, and the reasons Orange County became an epicenter for white grievance church going. New territory with many transplants and not yet home to Catholics, Jews or others, Onishi explains the attraction of patriotic Christianity wrapped in an USA flag.   Reviewed is the rise of the Klu Klux Klan from 100 years ago in Anaheim and cities in Colorado, as well as Klan-like modern MAGA reincarnations. Racism is at the heart of Onishi's argument against MAGA. Evangelicals and too many Catholics stick with Trump as their leader.   As a youth minister and student before that, Onishi was fed a constant diet of Mel Gibson in Braveheart. The violence defending one's people was revered at his Orange County church. Back in 1964, Orange County loved Barry Goldwater.   In 1980, many religious Christian voters preferred divorced actor Ronald Reagan to pious military veteran Jimmy Carter. Nowadays, many Christians prefer Trump to Biden, the committed Catholic.   Onishi argues that the evangelical anti-abortion position was developed to gain power joining forces with fundamentalist Catholics. The power to keep white Christians on top in America was the true motivation.   Discussed is modern media and Salem Media in particular. Salem's game plan is not just to save souls for Jesus, but to get MAGA policies into law ASAP.  We discuss Hugh Hewitt and Dennis Prager.   #DenverTrumpRadio hosts are also described for their faux religiosity and willingness to tout racist lies about birtherism and rigged elections in cities with large African-American voting populaces.   The United States is becoming the Divided States of America and the show contemplates how far and low it can go and how to battle back. Listen to Brad Onishi and you'll want more at his website. https://www.bradonishi.com/   We always want more from Troubadour Dave Gunders who kicks off the show with a great discussion of Jason Aldean's controversial music video, Try That in a Small Town. Is it good old boy entertainment or something worse? And if so, so what? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1_RKu-ESCY   Hard of Understanding is a better song than Aldean's, composed and performed by Dave Gunders and would be a perfect project for a music video retort. Fellas respond to Jack Smith looming indictment number two and Judge Cannon's mid-May trial setting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hw7o6KmtiDk   The Craig Silverman Show - Every Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Colorado time

The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 13th study session on Mário Filho's 1947 The Black Man in Brazilian Soccer, translated to English by Jack A. Draper III. Brazilian football (soccer) legend Pelé died near the end of 2022 at the age of 82. His transition along with the disgraceful hooliganism displayed when former President Jair Bolsonaro lost the presidency to Lula da Silva, motivated us to read this book. The whole time, the US has been struggling with a seeming increase of school shootings, Brazil has been battling the same problem. There was a hatchet attack at a day care center last week. And two weeks ago, on the same day as the Nashville, Tennessee church school shooting, a teacher was stabbed to death in Sao Paulo. In fact, they've suffered through 11 school massacres in the past 8 months. Last week, Filho detailed how World War II impacted South America. It seems many Whites in Brazil identified with the Germans, and hoped to join forces with Hitler and Mussolini. Filho continues to promote the lie that football had progressed beyond Racism. Yet, black players were denied the position of goal tender and assumed to be corrupted by bribes and sports gambling. And similar to Filho's earlier mention of lynching, he discusses the Klu Klux Klan and 20th century minstrel tunes without providing any historical context. It's as if South American readers are expected to be knowledgeable about the KKK and US slave culture. #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Sam and Emma host Gerald Horne, Professor of History and African American Studies at the University of Houston, to discuss his recent book The Counter-Revolution of 1836: Texas Slavery & Jim Crow and the Roots of U.S. Fascism. Then later in the show, they're joined by  Camille Gix, member of the Initiative I-135 steering committee at House Our Neighbors, the political committee for Real Change, to discuss  I-135, the housing initiative coming before Seattle voters until Tuesday February 14th. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the climbing death toll from last week's earthquake in Syria and Turkey, Turkey's response to contracting failures, the DOJ's lawsuit to halt a Jet Blue-Spirit merger, the IRS' dramatic service approvement, Israel expanding their West Bank settlements, and Matt Schlapp's response to being outed as a sexual harasser, before parsing through updates on the disaster chemical spill in East Palestine, Ohio, and the environmental catastrophe cover-up that is beginning to trickle out. Professor Gerald Horne then joins as he dives right into his work taking on the pre-foundational, foundational, and developmental myths of the United States, focusing on his analysis of the Texas revolution as a “counter-revolution,” seeking to expand institutions that promote a dearth of progress (indigenous dispossession, the transatlantic slave trade) rather than reinventing their institutions in favor of progress. Continuing his analysis of the Texas revolution, Professor Horne walks through the Texan elite and their push against the “Mexican Tyranny” of emancipation, then capitalizing on the success of their revolution by launching a period of mass bloodshed as they violently dispossessed the Comanches to expand their territories and plantations. Shifting away from Texas, Horne, Sam, and Emma explore the role of America and Mexico in challenging and supporting, respectively, Texas' role in the transatlantic slave trade, with Andrew Jackson using the Trail of Tears to force indigenous people into Texas' surrounding areas while Texas attempted to ally with now French-Occupied Mexico to stay off pressure from the US, lasting through to the Juneteenth arrival of Black Soldiers in Galveston to not only implement Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation but to put an end to the France-Texas alliance. Continuing forward through the turn of the century, Gerald walks through the lasting impact of this era of Texas history in the rebirth of the Klu Klux Klan, before stepping back to analyze the importance of the greater historical context behind this revolution, and how to unite macro and micro lenses of history. Camille Gix then joins to walk through Seattle's I-135 initiative, what “Social Housing” implies, and why this model can bolster the reclamation of housing from the financial world to the public realm. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Republicans talk around cuts to Social Security, assess the importance of raising the cap, analyze the connection between Chinese Spy Balloons and the UFOs invading US airspace this weekend, and discuss the rise and fall of 21st Century renaissance-man James O'Keef. Nova from Minnesota dives into the importance of fighting for SSDI, Owen from San Marcus talks about the reach of Matt Walsh and the issues of the computer science workforce, and Rosanne takes a note from the Babylon Bee for her newest stand-up set. This week we are celebrating Freedom Day, or what is more commonly known as Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.  Anthony Ray Hinton is an American activist, writer, and author who was wrongly convicted of the 1985 murders of two fast food restaurant managers in Birmingham, Alabama. Hinton was sentenced to death and held on the state's death row for twenty-eight years. During that time, he befriended a member of the Klu Klux Klan and through that friendship, that man moved from a life of hatred to a love for people of all races, and a love for God. Ultimately, Anthony was found to be innocent of his charges and was released from prison.  Dr. John M. Perkins has been a counselor to six presidents, community development leader, and civil rights legend. Dr. Perkins grew up in Mississippi and was born during the height of Jim Crow and the Great Depression. The loss of his mother due to malnutrition and his brother, who was killed by police after his return from World War II, shaped Perkins' life and ultimately inspired him to pursue civil rights issues, particularly around racial violence in the U.S. Today, at ninety-two years old, Dr. Perkins continues his work by shedding light on injustices and drawing Christians into the work of social justice and civil rights.  Both of these men give us a picture of the trials and tribulations they've had to endure in this life—exacerbated by issues of race—and how they've dedicated their lives to spreading love over hate and the joy that comes in the freedom they've found in Christ.    Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview: Sadie Robertson Upcoming interview: Janine Urbaniak Reid Juneteenth   Anthony Ray Hinton Henry Francis Hayes The Sun Does Shine   Dr. John M. In recent weeks, we have seen multiple mass shootings. Just days ago, the world was shocked by the gruesome massacre at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, that left 19 children and two teachers dead.  Less than two weeks before that, an 18-year-old gunman opened fire in a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, killing ten people and leaving three others injured, most of them Black. Law enforcement is investigating evidence that suggests it was motivated by racism. Shortly after the Buffalo shooting, FOX News Rundown host Jessica Rosenthal spoke with Scott Shepard, a former member of the Klu Klux Klan who now calls himself a reformed racist.  Shepard discussed how hate groups recruit people, and why he believes hate crimes are still so persistent in the U.S.. He also discusses his own story including, how his abusive upbringing led him down a hateful and violent path and how eventually left his ideology behind.   Due to time limitations, we could not include all of the conversation in our original segment.
