In Episode #64 of “Hear ye, hear ye, A TX-Style Renaissance Podcast”, I sit down with Bill Palmer, the Man behind Merlin the Magician. Merlin the Magician performed and worked at Texas Renaissance Festival for over 25 years. But that is not even half the story; Bill Palmer is a lifetime resident of Houston TX, and he graduated from Rice University, -and is a well-known magician in Houston and throughout the world. Bill learned accordion from his father, a well-known musician and writer of musical books. So, as a teenager, he started Banjo and quickly astounded his teachers. He then wrote his own music book, “How To Play Folk and Bluegrass Banjo,” that circulated worldwide. Did I mention, he also speaks German. Well, we shall cover that and more in episode sixty-four of “Hear ye, hear ye A TX-Style Renaissance Podcast.” Huzzah! The King

We invite you to enjoy episode #63 of Hera ye, hear ye; A TX-Style Renaissance Podcast! IN this episode we visit the Once and Future General Manager, Jeff Baldwin. WE recorded this episode in the fall before the release of Ren Faire, the movie. When we spoke with Jeff he was once again the Entertainment director, after serving his second time as General Manager. He talks about the pain of losing the position and the need to return and the happiness of once again being a part of the Festival he cares so much about. Unbeknownst to him at the time of the recording, George Coulam, the volatile genius behind the Texas Renaissance Festival, would ask Jeff to return once again to be TRF's General Manager, a mere few months after this recording. In the episode he discusses returning to the festival and his hopes for the future. IT is a fascinating story of winning, losing, and redemption. Never daunted Jeff continued his mission for excellence. Always looking how best to serve the festival, his passion is unquestioned, it is easy to see why once again he would return to lead the TRF into the future.

Documentary filmmaker Lance Oppenheim, as well as sound supervisor and re-recording mixer Paul Hsu, join us to discuss their new HBO documentary limited-series, “Ren Faire.” The show details the Succession-like power struggle atop the Texas Renaissance Festival, amid its founder's impending retirement. It was filmed in an appropriately over-the-top theatrical style, and features some incredible sonic world-building, which — in true Lance Oppenheim style — very cleverly mixes real and fantastical elements... often leaving the line between the two quite grey.“I've always been obsessed with Abbas Kiarostami's movies and ‘Close-Up,' which is very formally different than this, but the idea with that film was embracing reenactments, embracing performance, as a form of truth. And to me, with this project, everything you're seeing on the screen is real. But I wanted to also acknowledge that the moment you drop a camera anywhere, you violate the reality. So it's absurd. All of it's absurd. Documentary filmmaking is absurd. Nonfiction storytelling is absurd. So if we can acknowledge that, can we push past it and find something new?”—Lance Oppenheim, Director, Writer, and Executive Producer, “Ren Faire”This conversation was recorded in-person, in front of a live audience at Dolby's screening room in mid-town Manhattan, as part of our ongoing collaboration with the Artist Academy and Film at Lincoln Center.Be sure to check out “Ren Faire,” with all three episodes now streaming on Max.Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Institute and check out Dolby.com. Hail and well met! This week, Paul and Arlo raise their overpriced goblets to Lance Oppenheim's HBO docuseries Ren Faire. The three-episode series concerns the nation's largest Renaissance faire, the Texas Renaissance Festival, and the power-hungry Oompa Loompas looking to take over the chocolate factory from their perverted Willy Wonka. The boys are in awe (derogatory) of TRF owner George Coulam, a self-professed horny old man who seems much more interested in “sugaring” young women than in running his theme park. George berates all his pitiful hangers-on, including lifer Jeffrey Baldwin, Red Bull aficionado Louie Migliaccio, and no-nonsense Darla Smith. We talk to Lance Oppenheim, director of Ren Faire, the new docu-series on HBO. Ren Faire looks at the drama behind the scenes of the enormous Texas Renaissance Festival. When capricious 86-year-old owner and founder “King” George Coulam attempts to retire, his underlings, the obsequious & loyal-to-a-fault Jeff and the ambitious & conniving Louie, are pitted against each other in their attempts to gain control of the park. It's a darkly comedic real-life Shakespeare story, but it also touches on a lot of ideas about work, employment, ownership, power, performance, alienation, and an (unhealthy?) obsession with the past, all in the context of a very particular modern workplace. All three episodes of Ren Faire are available now to stream on Max (the place for HBO).

Justin Sayles and Jodi Walker struggle for power to recap ‘Ren Faire,' a three-part HBO docuseries. They start by discussing their personal experiences with renaissance fairs, the complicated trio of main characters at the heart of this absurd Texas Renaissance Festival conflict, and what makes the Safdie brothers–produced documentary so refreshing (1:23). Along the way, they talk about how ‘Ren Faire' illustrates themes indicative of our time regarding older people in positions of power (17:55). Later, they debate who ended up being the most tragic figure in the story and whether the blend of traditional documentary filmmaking with highly stylized techniques fully landed (29:13).
