In an era where radio and MTV was still relevant and Bandcamp and Spotify were right around the corner, Guster's Keep It Together proved the group had much more to say beyond their typical 2 guitarists and a percussionist gimmick. From banjos to flugelhorns to the "frightening double-necked string instrument" played by none other than Ben Kweller this album truly runs the gamut from folk to psychedelic rock. For a band that talked a lot about getting "their break" on the radio, Keep It Together proved their music had something much more profound to say than the dime a dozen pop singles of the era.

What happens when innovation is shaping your life in ways you never see? That is the question at the heart of this conversation with Portia Lane Child, Director of Innovation and Strategy Services at BAE Systems. While most of us recognise the consumer brands that dominate our daily world, far fewer realise how deeply companies like BAE Systems influence the systems that keep us connected, protected, and moving. Portia's work lives in that fascinating space, where advanced engineering meets national mission, and where the innovations you never hear about are often the ones shaping your future. During our discussion, Portia shares how she helps steer innovation inside one of the world's most complex aerospace and defence organisations. She talks about the human side of innovating within a massive enterprise, the challenge of moving ideas across technical and organisational silos, and the lessons she learned growing up as a lobster fisherman's daughter that still guide how she builds teams and champions new ideas. Her story about creating an internal accelerator that changed how the business nurtures ideas is a powerful reminder that innovation only takes root when people feel supported to experiment, communicate, and stretch beyond familiar boundaries. We also explore the shifting incentives shaping today's innovators, from the pressure of short-term financial cycles to the growing importance of longer horizons in the age of AI. Portia opens up about what it really takes to move from idea to impact inside a mission-driven organisation, why customer conversations matter more than ever, and how modern innovators can develop the resilience and curiosity needed to operate in fast-moving technical environments. My guest also shares inspiring reflections on the inventions that shaped her, the role models who sparked her imagination, and the breakthroughs she believes the world needs most.
In this episode of Cozy Conversations with The Sister Project®, Lauren and Michelle dive into Robin Sharma's The Deep Magic of Consistency—a little book packed with big wisdom and, dare they say... kind of life-changing. They explore how sticking with something (even when it's wildly unglamorous) is actually one of the most powerful forms of self-respect. Plus, they call out the biggest consistency killer of all: your phone. Yep. That little device stealing your dreams one scroll at a time? Time to set some boundaries. The conversation gets real as the sisters open up about grief—specifically, how deeply it weaves into motherhood. Being a mom without your mom is a heartbreak all its own, and they share what it's like to reach for someone who's no longer there. It's tender. It's honest. And it's a reminder that grief doesn't go away—it just shows up in new ways (often when you least expect it).As always, there's plenty of cozy, a healthy dose of humor, and unfiltered reflections on life, motherhood, distractions, and staying true to what matters most.Hot Topics: Hurricane Katrina - The Race Against Time (Hulu), Naked Gun, and toddlers.Resources:Lizzie Selle StudioFollow Us!Shop Our Seasonal Candles!Check out our website! This episode is sponsored by Helping Hand.

Post-Dispatch podcasts page: https://go.stltoday.com/0hfn43 Please consider subscribing: https://go.stltoday.com/9aigz5 Welcome to a brand-new Best Podcast in Baseball. St. Louis Post-Dispatch baseball writer and host Derrick Goold is joined this week by colleague, sports columnist, and instant offense Jeff Gordon. They discuss the Cardinals’ “relentless bunch” – their league-leading on-base machine lineup and their leader, hitting coach Brant Brown. There’s even a quiz on his catchphrases. The two writers look at the Cardinals shift to a six-man rotation for the coming week. And then they dive into the numbers on attendance in the early series of the season, ticket sales, and whether the dip in attendance reflects exactly the drop in payroll. Will the assertive start by the lineup and this team’s style of play be enough to bring fans to Busch Stadium, or Goold asks, is there something else afoot hear? The Cardinals have advertised a “transition” year, so is coming to the ballpark early in the season less fun because the team is more likely to change? Being there to watch a team in April that will be dismantled by August can be a hard sell. The Best Podcast in Baseball, sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is a weekly production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and Derrick Goold.

Three months on, could Syria slide back into civil war? In the Alawite bastion of ousted president Bashar al-Assad, the bloodiest week in years with attacks and revenge killings of civilians that the new masters of Damascus are scrambling to contain. Why did the Mediterranean coast region erupt? What triggered it? And what's the next move by new strongman Ahmed al-Sharaa? The jihadist militia leader who's traded in his fatigues for a suit and promised the outside world justice and respect for minority rights. Enough for the West to begin a desperately-needed easing of sanctions. Have the likes of the European Union moved too slowly or too fast? And how will al-Sharaa navigate between his own alliance of forces that include Turkey-backed militias which contributed to the overthrow of Assad but could pose a threat to the central authority in Damascus, the US-backed Kurds who want federalism, and the Russians who want to keep their Mediterranean bases? Not to mention Israel, which rejected overtures of détente and for the moment occupies more land in the Golan HeightsProduced by François Picard, Rebecca Gnignati, Elisa Amiri, Ilayda Habip.

Frontman Ryan Miller joins us to talk about all things Guster. From their tried and true collaborative writing process to the theatrical delights of their recent "We Also Have Eras" tour, to what it really looks like to make environmental sustainability a priority on tour. Guster has just released their 9th studio album, Ooh La La. As we talked about the new record, Ryan talked about how these new songs touch on questions that the band has been asking throughout their over 30 year career. For example, "Maybe We're Alright" calls back to the collectivist spirit that we loved in 2003's Keep It Together. "Gaugin, Cezanne (Everlasting Love)" talks about God in a way that brought up new questions for me about 2010's album, Easy, Wonderful, and so on. This is what makes being a Guster fan so rewarding. The longer you listen to these guys and the deeper you dig, the more you feel empowered to ask questions about the world around you and approach the answers with playfulness. Guster is a band, but it is also a place where we all meet to dance away the big questions with whimsy to the beat of tasteful hand drums. It is no exaggeration to say that lizzie has waited over 20 years to talk to Ryan. They became a fan of the New England indie outfit in 2003 when they opened for John Mayer at the West Point Military Academy, of all places. The vibe in the room was a little stiff, but Guster was anything but. Their exuberant, generous, harmony filled, idiosyncratic performance blew her teenage mind. As lizzie dug deeper into their lore, they discovered that they were a part of a vast network of weirdos: The Guster fandom. Do we really have to hold it all together? So many of us walk around with the pressure to contain, maintain, manage life without ever stopping to inquire about whether we actually have that power in the first place. When believing this story, we have to imagine a future where something terrible happens if we don't keep it all going. Yet, the nature of this reality is that everything comes to pass not to stay which puts us in an impossible position. As Byron Katie says, when we fight against reality we will lose — 100% of the time. Yet, when we notice what we're believing on top of reality and question it — we begin to trust and flow with the great mystery of life.
