This isn't new to Minnesota, but what does it mean in these divided times? Can anything get done in the MN Legislative Session in 2021? Dig Deep is a podcast and radio feature that aims to model some good behavior in our world. As we approach Halloween, a season of stories in a more storied year than any I can remember, it brought me great joy to discover these two recent releases.  As Chuck says when discussing anthologies, at worst if you don't enjoy what you're watching you can at lease embrace the fact that a new story isn't long in waiting.  When anthologies are done to their best, however, they open a whole series of doors with which a director can explore themes in overlapping cascades, something I felt both of these films do very well.  That these are both stories examining the nature of story in direct ways, it made for an easy choice to consider these movies together.  Yet...they are both very different films.   Tonally, the visions could not be more different.  Befitting a Clive Barker inspired film, Books of Blood carries an ominous presence throughout, it's characters bearing their flaws to scars as their psychological torment ultimately leads to physical desecration.  Befittingly, it draws us through a puzzle box of horrors that had an ending that will impact most viewers deeply as a moment of ultimate release or ultimate despair.  It delivers, in my humble opinion, what one would hope for in a Clive Barker piece, deliciously and without remorse.     The Mortuary Collection, on the other hand, has a sense of whimsy but do NOT be fooled by the poster (or the font, as Elizabeth points out in the episode) as it's meant to lure you into the belief that what you're to see isn't going to be horrific.  Horror abounds in this place, and with remarkable and unexpected visuals that will make the horror fan alternately cheer, squirm, and outright fawn over.  The movie reminds me explicitly of Peter Jackson's Braindead (1992), Dead Alive as it was released in the states, in many ways, but perhaps most importantly in that it's grand and colorful characters populate a world in which there is no fate too twisted, or gross, or bombastic by which they might meet their gory end.  It's a fun and beautiful film, and one that will probably stand as my favorite of the year.  I really hope this episode turns some folks onto it.   Love and Respect,   Shonny Constant 10.27.2020     If you've read all this and you're on Facebook, PLEASE join us at our Group to discuss the movie and share your horror love.  We REALLY want to hear from you.  We REALLY REALLY do!     Talk Horror To Me Facebook Group   If you'd like to see pictures of Elizabeth's permaculture projects on Instagram, visit @Our_Friend_Elizabeth   And here's a bunch of other links!    Instagram @TalkHorrorShow @Shonny.Constant   Twitter @ChzuckBean   Old Man Plays Old Games on Twitch @Chzuck     Cover art for this episode by Crystal Mielcarek!  Find more of her work on Facebook, Instagram, or Smushbox.net. Many of us have been touched by narcissism. Up close or from the sidelines, we have experienced its effects from a teacher, our parents, or from the leaders in our lives. Often this narcissism surprises us and comes from the most unexpected of places where we feel safe to let our guard down and allow ourselves to be vulnerable. One of these places is the Church. Typically we don’t relate narcissism to the Church. But, even though it is rarely talked about, narcissism is often experienced in the Church today. Many of us have experienced disappointment and heartache as a result. Today’s guest has been studying and working with narcissism for decades as a pastor, therapist, and spiritual director. Chuck DeGroat is the Professor of Pastoral Care and Christian Spirituality at Western Theological Seminary and senior fellow at Newbigin House of Studies, San Francisco. Chuck is also an author, speaker, consultant, and therapist. In today's show we talk about his most recent book, When Narcissism Comes To Church: Healing Your Community From Emotional and Spiritual Abuse. I love how Chuck speaks truth into narcissism and gaslighting and calls out church leaders who are playing out this phenomenon in our world today. If you've been the victim of spiritual abuse, my prayer is that this episode provides hope, healing and deeper insight into why you were harmed. As Chuck so eloquently writes in his book: Healing requires radical honesty with ourselves and the courage to follow through on the wilderness path to healing. Have you ever accused someone of being a narcissist? You've probably done so because someone was acting like the entire world revolved around them. Our typical picture of a narcissist is the larger than life, grandiose figure who seeks fame, power, and attention at all costs. We see these characteristics most often in politicians and charlatans. In fact, we've come to expect it from them. But did you know churches are one of the largest breading grounds for narcissism? It seems impossible at first glance since the Church is supposed to be all about humility and letting others go first. But pastors and laypeople alike can easily be pulled into narcissistic tendencies under the guise of serving God and leading people. We put ministry leaders on some pretty high pedestals. But it's not just limited to the top leaders. Narcissism can creep into our own hearts if we aren't prepared for what causes it. As Chuck explains in this first chapter, while narcissism appears to the outside world like there's an excess of self love, the reality is that the narcissist has put on a false identity because they are unable to love themselves. Chuck Kosal is the Chief Transformation Officer at Deloitte Tax, the tax function of the global firm Deloitte. Deloitte has a total of around 312,000 employees around the world and the tax function is made up of around 12,000 of those employees. They were actually named “Americas Tax Technology Firm of the Year” for the 2nd year in a row by the International Tax Review.    Deloitte’s mission is to create digital innovation that helps its clients adapt to accelerating globalization, increased regulatory and business complexities and other significant transformational changes in the corporate landscape. And in order to accomplish this the organization has to continually evolve to keep up with the needs of their clients.    Part of Chuck’s role is to help the organization navigate change and transformation. This can be a very challenging task because people tend to resist change. Chuck says, “You think in any conversation people always embrace change, they talk about how they want things to be better, how they want things to be different, but the reality is often, human nature is they want everybody around them to change, they think what they're doing is pretty spiffy, right? And so I could share an anecdotal example of a current technology we have in place, that everybody has complained about for a number of years. We announce that we're gonna change it and people scream and yell and drop to the floor and kick and scream like my youngest child, that, “don't take it away for me this terrible technology.” So, it's every day is spent navigating the organization, navigating the stakeholders, doing audience analysis to ensure I understand what's in it for the other side, showing empathy.”   Deloitte Tax is going through a digital transformation. As Chuck describes it, they are “trying to go from doing digital to being digital”. They realize that their clients are used to the quick and seamless interactions with companies like Amazon, Uber, Google, and these clients are going to expect the same service from Deloitte as well.    When it comes to organizational transformation Chuck says one of the biggest pitfalls companies encounter is the fear of taking the first step. “You'll hear a lot and I'm sure on your podcast, this idea of being bold. You don't actually need to be bold, you need to be brave. And you need to take the first step towards a change and I see that in the context of transformation. Digital or otherwise, any types of business transformation, even personal transformation, it's the first step that's the hardest. When you think about, it's that first workout that's the hardest, it's the first investment you make that's the hardest. And so I would say that's the biggest challenge that I would tell people. It's an easy challenge to overcome, just take your first step. Big or small, just take a step and see how it goes. And you might find that it's not as bad as you think and you might actually get some results that will inspire you to take a bigger step next time. But don't let paralysis be the enemy. Don't let this idea of how change might... What the outcome of change might be to not actually try it. And so I would say that's it, it's taking that first step.” What you will learn:  What does a Chief Transformation Officer do A look at the trends Chuck is paying attention to  How Deloitte is moving from doing digital to being digital How Chuck and his team are utilizing technology How companies can keep up with new technologies How to deal with change and approach people who are resistant to change The role of empathy in business Some of the pitfalls or mistakes companies make when going through transformation

In this week’s episode of The iPhreaks Show, Charles Max Wood (Chuck) shares some of his thoughts and advice for keeping current. He has started a keeping current email course through DevChat.TV and describes what lessons will be taught in this course. He encourages everyone to subscribe to the email course.   This idea of keeping current is something Chuck has been thinking about for a while. He gives an intro to the subject, explaining the frustration programmers feel after the reach a level of knowledge in the developer community. They ask themselves what do I learn next? What should I be studying to stay current? Chuck counters that question with why.   Why stay current? Chuck wants those who struggle with this to find their motivation behind staying current. He explains that if you are going to spend all this time to level up yourself you should have a goal to reach for. A common answer Chuck hears in response to this question is job mobility. Chuck shares some of his early motivations in staying current. It was partly wanting to stay competitive in the job market. Another part was wanting to sound smart. The last part was loving what he did and just wanting to learn more.     Chuck gives advice for finding a job that you really want. He tells listeners to buckle down and really dive into the technologies at your current job so when you do go looking for a new one they know they can expect you to learn their technologies whether you know them or not. Another suggestion he gives is to find the company you want to work for and learn the technologies they are using. Your initiative and drive will impress them.   Learning a skill for job mobility is okay but if you learn with a specific goal in mind the job mobility will come with it. Companies today hire based more on aptitude and compatibility than if you know the specific technologies they use.    So Chuck's first bit of advice for staying current is to sit down and think of where you want to end up. Do you want to be a speaker, team lead, company engineer, blogger, podcaster or something else? He also tells listeners not to be afraid to change their end goal. Chuck explains that knowing why you want to stay current will help you know what to learn. Learning the technology a company uses is one example.    If your goal is to speak at conferences, you might want to learn what topics are in demand, how to submit a good conference proposal, learn what people want to hear or what it takes to become a keynote speaker. If your goal is to become a blogger you will need to learn how to do SEO. If you want to become the software architect for your company you may need to improve your code organizational skills.    The next question Chuck addresses is “how?”. Chuck recommends everyone get a plan. Some organizations like toastmasters have a plan already laid out. For those interested in blogging there is 31 Days to Building a Better Blog, a book that outlines step by step how to build a good blog. Courses and books can outline your plan, and if you can’t find one, write your own.    When writing your own plan Chuck recommends finding someone who is doing what you want to do and ask them to list what you need to learn to do that thing. After that, you need to sit down and write out what and how you are going to learn.   As Chuck has mentioned do not be afraid to change your goal. Chuck shares a time in college when he decided he wanted to go into patent law. He quit his IT job and took an internship. He hated it and within a few months had switched back to computers.  So don’t be afraid to scrap your plan and do what will make you happiest.   Now for the actual learning, Chuck explains that there are so many ways to learn podcasts, videos, blogs, books, and courses. He describes how he learns best and advises listeners to find out how they learn. If you know what works best for you, you can design your plan to fit your learning style. Chuck encourages listeners to try a bit of everything. He shares how his attitude toward books changed as he put their concepts into action and all because he tried everything. Also, something types are learning for conceptual learning while others are more suited for practical learning.    Chuck explains how building and playing around with what you learn. He also encourages listeners to shares their experiences through blogs, video or podcasting. This way you will have a way to demonstrate what you learned.    The last thing Chuck explains is that even after you've completed your plan sometimes these things take time. You may learn everything on your list only to find you have more things to learn before you reach your goal.  Panelists Charles Max Wood Sponsors   Sentry– use the code “devchat” for two months free on Sentry’s small plan Adventures in Blockchain React Native Radio CacheFly Links Get a Coder Job https://devchat.tv/blog/how-to-stay-current-effectively-in-2019/ JSJ 387: How to Stay Current in the Tech Field 31 Days to Build A Better Blog https://thinkster.io/ https://www.pluralsight.com https://www.facebook.com/ReactNativeRadio/ https://twitter.com/R_N_Radio Picks Charles Max Wood: Sometimes it takes time to get what you want

Episode Summary  In this week’s episode on React Native Radio, Charles Max Wood (Chuck) shares some of his thoughts and advice for keeping current. He tell listeners to buckle down and really dive into the technologies at your current job so when you do go looking for a new one they know they can expect you to learn their technologies whether you know them or not. They start by discussing the Trump Administration backing down from a government shutdown over border wall funding, as well as the possible routes that President Trump can still take to secure funding. Mark and Rusty move on to the censorship of conservatives on social media and other platforms. They discuss the issue with creating an alternative social media platform and why the current alternatives have not been successful. Mark also explains how tech companies can get around some of the laws protecting citizens from being censored. Don't worry, Mark still covers the latest antics from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The guys move into discussing what is happening to our military and how members of our military are treated. They discuss the harsh treatment of true American heroes and the free passes for those who disgraced our nation. Rusty explained how political correctness has weakened our military and why it is critical that it is taken out of our military. They also discuss the left's claims that it is not possible for a nation's government to be weaponized or used to target citizens. They discuss the newly elected New York Attorney General's claims to destroy President Trump and his family. Mark and Rusty finish up the show by discussing the recent ruling on Obamacare and why we need to rethink health insurance. Mark explains why people need to take their health more seriously and think about insurance as protection from catastrophic cost or incidents. They also explain why health insurance needs to be priced out like car insurance.
