Leaving the corporate world and turning a lifetime passion into a business sounds like a dream come true for most of us. Although there is no doubt that working in what we are passionate about is an ideal situation, our today's guest, Chuck Garrity, believes it is not about dreaming but about planning. Creating a business out of a passion takes work, long nights of planning, lots of research, and getting ready to face countless challenges along the way. Joining me today is Chuck Garrity, founder, and CEO of Death of the Fox Brewing Company, the first and only brewery and coffee house in New Jersey. Chuck is also an avid reader and passionate about history. After working in the healthcare industry for over 20 years, Chuck decided to invest in himself and start his own brewery. After experiencing burnout working for big companies, Chuck realized that he didn't want that corporate life where, according to him, you get married to the company. That life wasn't for him.In this episode, we talked about Chuck's journey in the corporate world and why he decided to pivot into an entrepreneurial adventure. He kindly shared his experiences learning the secrets of brewery working side-by-side with a specialist - as he said, the only way to learn something. Chuck Carroll is truly “The Weight Loss Champion.”At his heaviest, he weighed 420 pounds and had amassed a 66-inch waist while requiring a size 6xl shirt. At just 5-foot-6, his tiny frame struggled to support his enormous figure. A severe food addiction continued to fuel an unhealthy lifestyle as his waist expanded at such a pace that soon it would outgrow even the big and tall catalog. Yet, he convinced himself that he needed to continue down that path in order to remain a personality on radio station BIG 100.3 (WBIG-FM) in Washington, DC.Still, there were times when, like millions of others battling the bulge, he tried and failed to lose weight. He was even once paid to endorse a program called The Cookie Diet. But like every other attempt, the success he achieved was short-lived as the weight came pouring back on and then some. The money he was paid for schilling the cookies quickly evaporated at the nearest drive-thru.Fearing that his life was spiraling out of control and nearing an end, he opted to undergo weight loss surgery. Prior to the procedure he was convinced that the drastic measure would become like all the other failed attempts to lose weight. At least, he thought, he could go to his grave confident that he tried everything.Chuck was just 27 years old at the time and didn’t think he would live to see 30.But then the unexpected happened. He woke up from the surgery and never looked back.Although a critical component, the surgery proved only to be the first step in his journey. In fact, he only attributes 10 percent of his weight loss success to the procedure. In just over a year, Chuck shed 265 pounds by conquering food addiction and devoting himself to a healthier lifestyle. He’s now maintaining the weight loss by eating a plant-based diet. Going vegan once seemed unthinkable to Chuck, but now it’s going back to eating processed meat and dairy that would be inconceivable. The confidence he gained from the weight loss enabled him to pursue his dream of becoming a sports reporter. He has hosted a number of radio shows with NFL players. One of the players gave him the nickname of “The Weight Loss Champion” after news of his transformation spread through the locker room. Shortly thereafter, Chuck’s career took a twist when he became a reporter for the all-news CBS station in Washington. From there, he went on to anchor national newscasts at NBC News Radio. Yet, he felt something was still missing in his professional life. He wanted to give back and inspire others to follow in his footsteps whether they had already lost weight or were just beginning their weight loss journey. His journey took another twist in 2017 when he adopted a plant-based diet at the urging of WWE Superstar Austin Aries which kicked his health into overdrive! The following year, he teamed up with PCRM to launch The Exam Room™ podcast where he has interviewed the biggest names in the plant-based community, including Dr. Neal Barnard, Dr. T. Colin Campbell, and Dr. Michael Greger. The show has grown to become one of the most downloaded nutrition podcasts in the world. Chuck Kosal is the Chief Transformation Officer at Deloitte Tax, the tax function of the global firm Deloitte. Deloitte has a total of around 312,000 employees around the world and the tax function is made up of around 12,000 of those employees. They were actually named “Americas Tax Technology Firm of the Year” for the 2nd year in a row by the International Tax Review.    Deloitte’s mission is to create digital innovation that helps its clients adapt to accelerating globalization, increased regulatory and business complexities and other significant transformational changes in the corporate landscape. And in order to accomplish this the organization has to continually evolve to keep up with the needs of their clients.    Part of Chuck’s role is to help the organization navigate change and transformation. This can be a very challenging task because people tend to resist change. Chuck says, “You think in any conversation people always embrace change, they talk about how they want things to be better, how they want things to be different, but the reality is often, human nature is they want everybody around them to change, they think what they're doing is pretty spiffy, right? And so I could share an anecdotal example of a current technology we have in place, that everybody has complained about for a number of years. We announce that we're gonna change it and people scream and yell and drop to the floor and kick and scream like my youngest child, that, “don't take it away for me this terrible technology.” So, it's every day is spent navigating the organization, navigating the stakeholders, doing audience analysis to ensure I understand what's in it for the other side, showing empathy.”   Deloitte Tax is going through a digital transformation. As Chuck describes it, they are “trying to go from doing digital to being digital”. They realize that their clients are used to the quick and seamless interactions with companies like Amazon, Uber, Google, and these clients are going to expect the same service from Deloitte as well.    When it comes to organizational transformation Chuck says one of the biggest pitfalls companies encounter is the fear of taking the first step. “You'll hear a lot and I'm sure on your podcast, this idea of being bold. You don't actually need to be bold, you need to be brave. And you need to take the first step towards a change and I see that in the context of transformation. Digital or otherwise, any types of business transformation, even personal transformation, it's the first step that's the hardest. When you think about, it's that first workout that's the hardest, it's the first investment you make that's the hardest. And so I would say that's the biggest challenge that I would tell people. It's an easy challenge to overcome, just take your first step. Big or small, just take a step and see how it goes. And you might find that it's not as bad as you think and you might actually get some results that will inspire you to take a bigger step next time. But don't let paralysis be the enemy. Don't let this idea of how change might... What the outcome of change might be to not actually try it. And so I would say that's it, it's taking that first step.” What you will learn:  What does a Chief Transformation Officer do A look at the trends Chuck is paying attention to  How Deloitte is moving from doing digital to being digital How Chuck and his team are utilizing technology How companies can keep up with new technologies How to deal with change and approach people who are resistant to change The role of empathy in business Some of the pitfalls or mistakes companies make when going through transformation

At 33 years old, Chuck MacLean has worked with some of the biggest talents in Hollywood like Brad Pitt and Antoine Fuqua.  Currently, he collaborates with major players Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Tom Fontana, Jennifer Todd and Kevin Bacon with his critically-acclaimed Boston Cop Drama, City on a Hill.  What I enjoyed most in sitting down with him is his ability to say it like it is without worrying what others will think of him.  Sure, it might warrant an "explicit" rating (F-bombs abound), but you'll feel like you're back on the streets of Boston with this self-described "shitbum from Quincy" who pulled off "the biggest con of all" by hitting it big in Hollywood as a screenwriter.  If he can go from being bloody and chased by cops to creating a major hit in under 15 years, maybe you can too.  His "no" stories may just be funnier, and more dangerous, than yours!   SHOW NOTES: Wanting to write male-driven dramas but learning early on that no one wanted them unless they were placed within a genre film, (4:55). The culture shock moving from Boston to LA, (6:18). "It was thing where I realized, 'oh, to really make a successful story, you just need to care about the characters and the story can be kind of secondary.  Even if you're using a basic genre element, a basic genre structure... if the character's good, no one's really paying attention to that," (7:57). The whole City on a Hill story, starts with that movie 'Black Mass', (9:29). The joys of working with Ben Affleck as a producer, (11:05).  Being hired by for his particular voice by Ben Affleck, (13:50).  The best moment of Chuck's career, at Ben Affleck's house, (15:43).  The surreal quality of success in Hollywood coupled with the blunt truth of how hard the work is, (17:21). The best advice I got early on was that it doesn't cost anybody anything to call you a genius", (18:17). The effortless beauty of Kevin Dunn's acting, (19:22). The influence of Chuck's grandfather on his desire to be a writer, (21:59).  Story about doing grandfather’s eulogy, (23:28).  The responsibility of writing because he knew his parents were broke, (27:00).  Being terrible at everything else and falling back on writing, (27:24).  Chuck’s college experience, (30:04).  "The only thing that made me happy was getting myself out of trouble", (35:15).  Using people’s doubt as fuel, (37:24).  Realizing that normal people don’t get drunk on Friday nights and get into fights and how that freed up much more time to pursue a dream, (39:44). Chuck’s daily writing routine, (44:13). How Chuck approaches fictional stories, (46:55).  "So, like, if I'm gonna go write a cop show about Boston, right?  What does the audience expect that to look like? ...  'okay, well how do I come in from the left then?  And hit them sideways?'" (50:23). The pragmatic, almost mathematical problem-solving aspects of screenwriting, (52:21). “I usually do it based on whatever I’m going through, ‘cause that’s what I’m gonna be interested in writing about”, (54:52). Chucks massive body of work, including short stories, (55:34). “10% of my job is actually writing... 90% of it is just dealing with bullshit”, (1:00:28).  "Big time agent read it, guy's been around forever... he flipped out.  He sent it to an editor and that guy flipped out... they were so excited about the whole thing, and then... nothing ever happened.  It got shot down everywhere," (1:02:23).  Chuck’s “Sicilian” take on how the brain works, (1:08:09). “That’s what I would say to that kid, “believe it or not, it’s gonna work out kinda the way you think it is,”(1:20:14). Today, it's all about communication. That, and mountaineering – because these two things are so intertwined. Well, they will seem to be once you listen to my conversation with our guest Chuck Garcia. Chuck is an executive coach, professor at the Graduate School of Engineering at Columbia University, and a speaker. He worked for many years at Bloomberg – and started before it became the giant financial news and media company that it is today. He has worked very closely with its founder Michael Bloomberg. Chuck is also an avid mountaineer and this conversation is primarily one around the parallels between mountain climbing and effective communication – and there are more than you realise. There are so many in fact, that Chuck has written a wonderful, best-selling book on the topic called A Climb to the Top: Communication and Leadership Tactics to Take Your Career to New Heights. We get into that and much more including: How Chuck started his career and the early days at Bloomberg; Mountaineering and his expeditions; What makes a great leader; Some very difficult conversations he had following the 9/11 attacks which tragically claimed the lives of three of Chuck's colleagues; Climbing expeditions to honour fallen colleagues The perils of knee-jerk reactions – both in climbing and communicating; Agility versus planning; Much more! Most of the fitness wearables are on the wrist because people are used to wearing watches and one thing that became apparent right off is they work reasonably well, they’ve gotten better at it but that is one of the worst places you can actually measure anything. There are a bunch of reasons for that - your tattoos, skin color, hair, you get vibration no matter how tight it is, you get a lot of interference from the sun, it’s much stronger than the LEDs they use on the watches. But the bigger thing is you don’t have a lot of concentration of where arteries handoff to capillaries, the blood, whereas in the finger you have a huge density of those. Affiliate Disclosure Who is Chuck Hazzard? Chuck serves as Oura's Vice President of Sales. Chuck Hazzard is an entrepreneur and technology expert, with a current focus on the wearable industry. In the past, Chuck has designed and built computer networks, developed software applications for large corporations, helped build a successful telecommunications business from the ground up, and more recently, helped a large telecommunications company develop and bring to market products and services yielding an additional $500 million in annual revenue. Chuck earned his BA in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of Maine, where he also earned his JD at their School of Law. Chuck is also a graduate of the FDN program and is a licensed Heartmath Provider. Chuck Johnson knew since he was a child that he wanted to be a musician. After persistently nagging his father (who played music in a band during rowdy parties) to teach him how to play, he learned his first 3 chords at 6 years old. Chuck Johnson probably never imagined his early childhood fascination would turn into a successful career as a prominent member of 3 bands and internationally touring with a jazz legend. From the ins and outs of forming bands over his career to the way he balanced a job with his musical commitments, Chuck spends this episode sharing stories and providing insight into his wide-ranging career-- including playing some live music from his most recent album. About Chuck Johnson: Originally from Ferrum, a small rural town in southwest Virgina, Charles “Chuck” Johnson is a guitarist and vocalist for the band TK-421 and Najee. He got his first big break in a variety band called Bananas At Large.
