On April 22, 1992, the most consequential episode of Quantum Leap, nay, the most consequential episode of TV ever, aired on NBC: “The Curse of Ptah Hotep”. Sam leaps into Dale Conway, an archeologist who, along with his partner, Dr. Ginny Wills, has just discovered the tomb of King Ptah-Hotep. The hieroglyphics on the wall tell them whoever disturbs the tomb will be swallowed by death, and it appears he starts making good on his promise as members of the crew start dropping as quick Al's one liners. We discuss an episode that is easily the love child of “A Potrait for Troian” and “The B**gieman”. We talk about the practice of “white-washing” in TV and movies, and we do some deep, deep fan-wank tying this episode to the the Evil Leaper project. Hope you enjoy!

You are about to witness the strength of Bob Saget. Leapers! We're back this week to talk about Season 4, episode 21, Stand Up - April 30th, 1959. Sam leaps into Davey Parker - one half of the comedy duo Parker and MacKay (Saget). Despite a rough start with Sam leaping in mid-routine, the duo get a shot doing their act in Vegas, thanks in no small part to their third, Frankie Washarskie (Amy Yasback). Sam has to get Mack and Frankie to admit their in love with each other, but also prevent MacKay from being offed by a mob boss who has his own eyes on Frankie. We talk about how this episode is a return to form after a few off-kilter stories, and how - Thank Ziggy - we finally have a well-written Al for the first time in a while. We kick off our coverage of the final season of our beloved show. Season 5 of “Quantum Leap” premiered with the episode fans were told would never happen: Sam leaps into Lee Harvey Oswald. Stuck leaping into the alleged assassin at various points in his adulthood from 1957 to 1963, Sam takes on more and more of his leapee's personality, raising the dangerous possibility that history will repeat itself. Meanwhile, Al interrogates the real Oswald back at PQL, trying to uncover the conspiracy of who was really responsible for killing Kennedy. We pick apart and put back together a fan favorite - an episode Bellisario wrote as a direct rebuttal to Oliver Stone's “JFK”. We also talk about some of the real-life conspiracies surrounding the assassination. It's a long twisting discussion with emotional highs and lows and an exploration of what works, what doesn't, and what may have in a different world. Ultimately, the human cost of this real-life, world-shattering event cannot be done justice, but we try to make sense of it all in some way - striving to contextualize the episode - and the real life event it leads to- in the time in which we live.

We talk about one of the fluffiest of fluff episodes following the dramatic season opener. Along the way, we discuss Shield's previous movies, the wild parties at Project Quantum Leap, and how this episode gives us an Al that is just the right mix of sexist. Sam leaps into young Nikos Stahatos, a Greek sailor working aboard a luxury yacht. Sam finds himself in the Aegean Sea with one of the passengers, Vanessa Foster (Brooke Shields), just as the ship explodes. Vanessa is a spoiled rich girl who seems to despise Nikos, but of course, there's more to the story. As they make their way to land, and hope for eventual rescue, Sam finds himself falling for Vanessa despite himself. He's there to rescue himself and Vanessa, but what does rescue mean for the couple? Note: Sam incorrectly identifies the "Metmorphosis" episode of the Incredible Hulk when chatting about director Alan J. Levi's previous credits. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea cupla. The episode he was thinking of is "Prometheus".

Because as long as Leon is on the loose, Sam is unable to leap. We talk about what was one of our seriously favorite episodes when we were kids. Will is now a deputy sheriff, but much more important, he's the fiancé of Abigail Fuller. Abigail isn't a child anymore, but is still haunted by bad luck - on the day of her and Will's wedding, little Purvis Takins, a boy she babysat the night before, has gone missing. The town's folk suspect foul play on her part, leading to a witch hunt. Meanwhile, Sam is head over heels in love with Abigail, and she seems to have a deep connection with him, not Will. There's a lot to unpack in this very “sudsy” second part of Quantum Leap's take on Southern gothic. Is it okay that Sam gets so romantically involved with a woman he had just been a father-figure to the leap before? Does this episode stand on its own outside Parts 1 and 3? Trilogy: Part 3 - July 27, 1978

As Willie, Sam finds himself in a bank hold-up situation alongside his brothers, in an effort to get justice over a predatory loan where their farm is the collateral. We discuss an episode that has a lot of potential in its premise, but ultimately gets lost in a largely unlikable leapee, lazy jokes, and sloppily executed comedy. But we also call out the highlights: Al's outfits, Al's heart-to-heart moments with Marty's child, Jessica, and a few comedic moments that do manage to land.

In a couple of days, a protest is going to turn violent leading to someone's death, and Sam is there to stop that - but also keep Margaret's marriage intact to her chauvinistic husband intact. (Why keep the marriage? We're not sure.) We discuss an underrated gem of the final season. This was one of the last non-gimmick episodes in a season defined by gimmicks. We uncover the troubled history of getting this episode produced, and how it might have fared better earlier in the series.

But things get really complicated when Alia returns, leaping into Mike's girlfriend. Meanwhile in the future, Al counsels the real Arnold, urging him to stop his dangerous acts as a would-be avenger. Sam has arrived just days before the icon's suicide, and Ziggy says the odds are high he's there to prevent it. Meanwhile, a new assistant, Barbara, has come into Marilyn's life, and it quickly becomes evident we're in an “All About Eve” situation. He must prevent his fellow vet, Roy, a fellow vet, from succumbing to a seizure the following night, and meanwhile, helping to heal a troubled friendship with another vet who they both served with in the overseas conflict. We deconstruct the last mostly non-gimmick episode of the series. But we have a lot of thoughts about the notorious one gimmick this episode has! Sam Fain has some strong feelings in particular. Do the final moments derail the whole episode?

The Leap Between the States - September 20, 1862

Only three episodes to go, Leapers! We're back with with our re-watch of “The Leap Between the States". Sam secedes from the regular rules (thank you, TV Guide, for that brilliantly horrible pun), and leaps back almost a hundred years further than his own lifetime, into the life of his great-grandfather, Captain John Beckett, of the Union army. After the initial shock of finding himself in an era he was never meant to travel to, Sam finds himself in a somewhat “Back to the Future”-esque plot where he must make sure his great-grandfather and great-grandmother get together as intended. He also gets involved with the Underground Railroad and former slave, Isaac - who will go on to have a very, very important descendant. Plus, this episode wouldn't be complete without a dastardly Confederate villain, right? As always, we deconstruct the episode and examine how well it holds up to present day viewing. Also going well off-topic (Us? Never!), and discuss the 2020 presidential election. (We recorded this just one day after the race was called for President-Elect Biden.)

Synopsis: When Ben leaps into an Indian family to try to prevent their beloved family restaurant from burning down, he finds an emotional connection with their matriarch through memories of his own; Magic and Jenn share a surprising revelation with Ian. Sometimes in family, there's disagreements, and this particular episode of Fate's Wide Wheel reflects that. Sam & Dennis have different points of view on Episode 13 of the new series, and there is certainly spirited discussion in this episode. She made her directorial debut with Cora Unashamed for the BBC, PBS and Masterpiece Theatre’s The American Collection. Synopsis: Ben finds himself in 2012 in the midst of the Mendéz family as they help their transgender daughter, Gia, who dreams of playing on her high school basketball team. Magic and Jenn discover another piece of the puzzle of why Ben leapt in the first place. We are excited to be joined by episode writer, actor and director, Shakina, for the discussion of this episode! She initially made television history on NBC’s “Connecting” as the first transgender person to play a series regular on a network comedy. She can also be seen in Amazon’s GLAAD Award Winning “Transparent Musicale Finale,” which she helped write and produce, and Hulu’s “Difficult People” as the iconic trans truther, Lola. Her play “Chonburi International Hotel and Butterfly Club” premiered on Audible in 2020 in collaboration with Williamstown Theatre Festival and was recognized with a 2021 Drama League Award for Best Audio Theatre Production. She is the Founding Artistic Director of Musical Theatre Factory, where she helped to develop hundreds of new musicals including Michael R. Almost serving as a soft reboot for the uninitiated, the episode sees Al fighting for the Project's life back in the future while Sam, in the life of a NYC detective on his honeymoon, fights for the life of his new bride, Diane, against a psychotic ex-husband. Oh, and he also has to fight for his own moral code, as Diane is eager to consummate their marriage - with a man she obviously doesn't know is not actually her husband.
