(Recorded February 12th, 2025)   Deception and self-interest seem to be increasingly prevalent in our modern cultural reality. From the highest levels of power to the cultural metrics of what is considered ‘success' for individual humans: the Dark Triad traits of Narcissism, Sociopathy, and Machiavellianism have become disturbingly normalized. But is there an antidote? Could an opposing “Light Triad” of traits - if nurtured and protected - offer a path toward a society in service of life rather than power? In this Frankly, Nate explores the concept of Light Triad personalities and their struggle against the Dark Triad forces shaping our social, economic, and ecological landscape. He examines how social media amplifies manipulation, why individual goodness is often outmatched by structural incentives, and whether strong, cooperative groups might hold the key to shifting the balance. Importantly, he questions whether the Light Triad can ever truly compete - or if it must evolve new strategies to stand a chance in service of life. How many people does it take to shield a Light Triad individual from Dark Triad manipulation? Will these competing traits become more or less dominant as we move into the downslope of the Carbon Pulse? And can someone with a Dark Triad personality ever truly change, or are they hardwired for self-interest?   Show Notes and More Watch this video episode on YouTube   ---   Want to learn the broad overview of The Great Simplification in 30 minutes? We check in on our New Year's resolutions and hear why Sarah's year is looking much better than last year. We discuss the new Girls Gone Wild documentary, the seeming sociopathy of Joe Francis, and why we as a society were ok with the series's exploitation of women. We explain how the techniques used by GGW to get women to comply remind us of some of our experiences on the Challenge. Sarah describes how much of what we know about how dinosaurs looked is probably inaccurate, some of our ideas about them are wrong, and we have so much more to learn about them. We learn how food affects women in terms of desire and their willingness to succumb to the advances of men. And Susie explains why she is happy that Ozempic and other drugs used for weight-loss are such a blessing to people, and how a comedy special opened her eyes to how they affect the people who use them in positive ways.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Control Body Odor ANYWHERE with @lumedeodorant and get 15% off with promo code BRAINCANDY15 at https://lumepodcast.com/BRAINCANDY15! #lumepodVisit https://cozyearth.com and use our exclusive 40% off code BRAINCANDYVisit https://www.carawayhome.com/BRAINCANDY you can take an additional 10% off your next purchaseSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Dr. Kerry McAvoy was a busy mom, wife, and psychologist when her world was devasted by the death of her first husand. When she was finally able to come up for air, she met a new man who was everything she wanted in a partner.  Just months after the wedding, she woke up to a text from a woman she didn't know: “I guess the joke is not just on me but on you, too. I've been dating your husband.”  Her world was shattered. Still in love with her new husband, she chose not to leave. Instead, she spent the next two years fruitlessly and desperately trying to fix what was broken. Despite being a psychologist, Kerry had never heard the term "narcissistic abuse." She didn't realize she'd been love-bombed, and was now being manipulated and gaslighted. Married to a man whose personality vacillated between good guy and monster, Kerry was left strung out and confused. She became so desperate that she briefly considered ending her life.  When her son became ill, Kerry saw her chance to leave her marriage and escape the hellscape she'd been living in.  Kerry's goal now is to help others gain clarity and heal after narcissistic abuse. She wrote a book, Love You More, and took to TikTok where she created a 29-part video series on her experience of marriage to a malignant narcissist. This series, as well as her other videos about toxic relationships, have garnered over 18 million likes.

Personally approached at the tender age of 23 to join the FBI, Joe Navarro became one of the youngest agents ever to join the renowned investigative agency. He went on to spend the next 25 years at the FBI, working both as an agent and supervisor in the areas of counterintelligence and counterterrorism. Through his work he was able to study, refine and apply the science of nonverbal communications. His acumen in this field and his success as a spy-catcher, led Joe to train FBI agents and the intelligence community. Retiring from the FBI in 2003, and meeting overwhelming demand for his notable insights into human behavior, Joe has dedicated himself to speaking and consulting with major corporations worldwide. Today Joe is recognized as one of the world's foremost authorities on the application and use of nonverbal communications in business. Through his experience working with CEOs and senior leaders of major global organizations, he is highly sought out for his expertise on leadership, influence, and the behavioral qualities that drive more effective leaders and in turn happier, more productive workforces. Joe has been writing articles and books for the past 30 years. Today, he has 14 published books available in 29 languages. He has also written regular monthly columns for a variety of publications. (Conversation recorded on May 5th, 2024)   Show Summary:  In this episode, Nate welcomes back Daniel Schmachtenberger to unpack a new paper, which he co-authored, entitled Development in Progress, an analysis on the history of progress and the consequences of ‘advancement'.  Current mainstream narratives sell the story that progress is synonymous with betterment, and that the world becomes better for everyone as GDP and economies continue to grow. Yet, this is an incomplete portrayal that leaves out the dark sides of advancement. What are the implications when only the victors of history write the narratives of progress and define societal values? What are the value systems embedded in our institutions and policies, and how do they reinforce the need for ongoing growth at the expense of the natural world and human well-being? Finally, how do we change these dynamics to form a new, holistic definition of progress that accounts for the connectedness of our planet to the health of our minds, bodies, and communities? The full paper discussed in this episode will be available on The Consilience Project website in the near future.   About Daniel Schmachtenberger: Daniel Schmachtenberger is a founding member of The Consilience Project, aimed at improving public sensemaking and dialogue.  The throughline of his interests has to do with ways of improving the health and development of individuals and society, with a virtuous relationship between the two as a goal. Towards these ends, he's had a particular interest in catastrophic and existential risk, with focuses on civilization collapse and institutional decay. His work also includes an analysis of progress narratives, collective action problems, and social organization theories. These themes are all connected through close study of the relevant domains in philosophy and science.   For Show Notes and More visit: thegreatsimplification.com/episode/daniel-schmachtenberger-7   To watch this video episode on Youtube → https://youtu.be/tmusbHBKW84 0:00 - Introduction 0:46 - Guest Introduction: Daniel Schmachtenberger 2:24 - Personal Catch-Up and Observations 3:55 - Paper on Development and Progress 6:19 - Definition and Importance of Progress 11:03 - Critique of Technological Advancement 14:05 - Historical Context of Progress Narratives 18:53 - Social Structures and Restraint 21:21 - Technological Efficiency and Wisdom 27:41 - Climate Change and Technological Solutions 30:32 - Historical Analysis of Conquerors 35:30 - Multipolar Traps and Progress 45:01 - Asymmetry and Power in Evolution 46:29 - Definitions of Progress 47:15 - Ecological and Economic Risks 52:54 - Case Studies of Externalities 56:14 - Corporate Personhood and Sociopathy 1:02:22 - Influence of Dominant Narratives 1:09:09 - Global Coordination and AI 1:11:51 - Self-Terminating Path of Winning 1:13:45 - Addressing Systemic Ecological Issues 1:20:17 - Human Wisdom and Restraint 1:23:27 - Jevons Paradox and Energy Efficiency 1:30:07 - Historical Analysis of Warfare 1:35:30 - Cancer and Industrial Toxins 1:39:03 - Influence of Dark Triad Traits 1:45:01 - Environmental Impact of Corporations 1:52:54 - Long-Term Ecological Solutions 2:00:27 - Role of Education in Progress 2:07:02 - Ethical Considerations in Technology 2:13:45 - Philosophical Foundations of Progress 2:20:17 - Addressing Social Inequality 2:23:27 - Integrating Traditional Knowledge 2:30:07 - Future Prospects and Challenges 2:35:30 - Personal Reflections and Closing Thoughts

Patric Gagne is a sociopath–as are 5% of the population generally. Growing up, she reports she “mostly felt nothing.” When she was diagnosed in her early adulthood, she finally understood why she experienced life so differently than those around her. She got her PhD in Psychology and wrote her memoir, Sociopath to demystify disorders like psychopathy and sociopathy.    Gagne doesn't hold back, sharing with us what it feels like to be a sociopath and what neurotypical people so often get wrong about these disorders. It's not every day we get to hear about sociopathy from someone who lives it, so settle in for an extended episode and a conversation like no other.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sociopathy should be understood as a spectrum disorder. It's a disorder that affects roughly 5% of the population – similar to the number of people who have depression or anxiety. Patric Gagne is a sociopath. In this chat with Fearne, Patric explains the difference between a psychopath and a sociopath. Sociopaths have access to inherent emotions like sadness and happiness, but struggle with learned social emotions like remorse, guilt, empathy, and love. There's also a huge feeling of apathy for Patric, which in the past led her to anti-social behaviours like stealing cars and breaking into houses. Fearne also points out the benefits of not caring what others think of you; while she people pleases a lot, she can see the freedom in having a lack of a filter. They chat about how to function in a relationship when you have to communicate any kind of mental disorder or illness too. Patric's memoir, Sociopath, is this month's Happy Place Book Club read. “Impacts of Sex With a Narcissist If you're intimate with a sexual narcissist, you may chronically feel “not good enough,” regardless of how you perform sexually. You may develop a negative body image, have patterns of self-invalidation, and experience shame and low self-worth. Long-term, sex with a narcissist may lead to difficulty trusting future sexual partners, trauma symptoms, or even the development of PTSD. Impacts of sex with a narcissist include: Low self-esteem Body image issues Self-invalidation (e.g., telling yourself you're selfish for having sexual needs) Shame and secret-keeping from loved ones Decrease in sexual desire (specifically with the sexual narcissist, or in general) Consequences of blackmail Difficulty trusting future sexual partners Trauma symptoms and/or PTSD How to Respond to Sexual Narcissism How you respond to sexual narcissism depends largely on the nature of the relationship. Is this a one-night stand or a long-term relationship? Are you committed to this person or want to exit the relationship? As a rule of thumb, partners of sexual narcissists should be careful not to reinforce unwanted behaviors while engaging in sex; avoid giving the indication that the sexual narcissist's behavior is wanted or enjoyable when possible (e.g., by moaning or smiling). You may try setting boundaries around sex, in which case it's important that you're firm in asserting your needs, as wavering may invite a sexual narcissist to violate and push your limits. Name the unacceptable behavior clearly (“Do not choke me during sex”) and restate the assertion as many times is needed. If the sexual narcissist tries to make it about their needs (“But this is what turns me on”), redirect the attention back to yourself. Boundaries are helpful with a sexual narcissist outside of the bedroom as well. Because sexual narcissists often cheat to avoid the intimacy and vulnerability that comes with a committed relationship, you may want to express to your partner your limits around infidelity. Individual therapy or couples counseling are both helpful resources for discussing sexual narcissists' patterns and determining how and whether to proceed in the relationship. Ultimately, it may be in your best interest to walk away, in which case it's worth educating yourself on what a narcissist does at the end of a relationship. Regardless of how you choose to proceed, it's important as a first step to consider your safety. Some sexual narcissists may become aggressive or retaliatory when confronted about their behavior.” -https://breakthesilencedv.org/9-signs-of-narcissistic-sexual-behavior/. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

S6 E3 - "A lioness' pride" - Justice for Willow (Part 3)CW/TW - DISTRESSING CONTENT - Displays of grandiosity, narcissism or sociopathy, suicidal ideation, domestic violence, murder of a child For today's episode, we will wrap up this multiparter, where we await what will happen with Stephen Clare, the monster who murdered his 11 month old daughter, Willow. We will hear more from her mother, Mariah, and we ask you all to please remember Willow - the bright, beautiful, and innocent baby who's life was stolen way too soon. Admittedly, this has been a very tough case to talk about (and hear about), but important. Mariah needs to be heard, as she is not only speaking for herself, and for her living children, but she is giving a voice back to her daughter Willow, who will forever be unable to speak for herself. Mariah, as well as her three children who survived, are true heroes in todays case. Mariah, Braylon, Copeland, Rosalie, and Willow. They all are bees.SOURCES -Domestic Violence Helpline800-799-7233 (SAFE)or Text START to 88788https://www.domesticshelters.org/helpYou can search for resources online by location(San Antonio residents - https://maghouse.org/)https://www.verywellmind.com/effects-of-narcissistic-abuse-5208164https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/toxic-relationships/201709/how-spot-narcissistic-abusehttps://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/narcissistic-abusehttps://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/intimatepartnerviolence/fastfact.htmlhttps://www.doorwaysva.org/our-work/education-advocacy/the-facts-about-domestic-violence/https://ncadv.org/STATISTICShttps://www.socialsolutions.com/blog/domestic-violence-statistics/https://www.expressnews.com/news/article/stephen-clare-capital-murder-robinhood-place-18195235.phphttps://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=2eVN1N1b8dghttps://www.kens5.com/article/news/crime/san-antonio-shooting-police-monday-sapd/273-cbdaf551-ccf3-444a-8119-836a664a614chttps://www.kens5.com/article/news/crime/san-antonio-domestic-violence-shooting-deadly-police/273-51bffbf8-a4fe-4557-8e91-e3c9f1002144https://www.ksat.com/news/local/2023/04/11/man-and-young-mother-hes-accused-of-shooting-at-north-side-home-had-recently-divorced-records/https://www.kens5.com/article/features/healing-through-advocacy-mother-who-survived-deadly-domestic-violence-attack-shares-story-to-save-lives-sapd-san-antonio-texas/273-35b70b05-67d8-4f9a-bae5-dd580c15ee2dhttps://www.kens5.com/article/news/crime/stephen-clare-san-antonio-murder-charge-indictment-texas-police-attack/273-0b167210-4f1e-4989-bd6a-f21aa3206248https://www.ksat.com/news/local/2023/04/18/mother-who-survived-attack-wants-public-to-know-about-progression-of-domestic-violence/Find and follow Mariah -TikTok: @mariahleegardnerFacebook: Mariah Lee GardnerOUR LINKS - Become a patron! Today, Mariah will continue to recall the events that led to the tragedy that occurred April 10, 2023. We dive in a little more on the links to Narcissistic Personality Disorder and domestic violence, and pose the question of whether or not you always listen to your gut. As for Stephen Clare - the crimes he committed are all pieces of a pure living nightmare, one that had all the signs, albeit difficult to see. Narcissists are very thorough with carrying through their plan if it is something that will make them look good. We urge you all to recognize the signs of Narcissistic Abuse from family members and even friends, whether you have fallen victim to it or not. In a tragic recollection of events, including murder, Mariah is still left with a huge void that cannot be filled. The lasting impact of what happened to her is unimaginable. Mariah will tell you from start to finish about the monster she married and unfortunately, didn't realize how much of a monster he is, until far too late. The signs were there, but very difficult to see. This case is an extremely wild and heartbreaking ride - from the depths of a narcissistic monster to the scams he pulled, flying monkeys he created, the lies he told… and the murder he committed.SOURCES -Domestic Violence Helpline800-799-7233 (SAFE)or Text START to 88788https://www.domesticshelters.org/helpYou can search for resources online by location(San Antonio residents - https://maghouse.org/)https://www.verywellmind.com/effects-of-narcissistic-abuse-5208164https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/toxic-relationships/201709/how-spot-narcissistic-abusehttps://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/narcissistic-abusehttps://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/intimatepartnerviolence/fastfact.htmlhttps://www.doorwaysva.org/our-work/education-advocacy/the-facts-about-domestic-violence/https://ncadv.org/STATISTICShttps://www.socialsolutions.com/blog/domestic-violence-statistics/https://www.expressnews.com/news/article/stephen-clare-capital-murder-robinhood-place-18195235.phphttps://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=2eVN1N1b8dghttps://www.kens5.com/article/news/crime/san-antonio-shooting-police-monday-sapd/273-cbdaf551-ccf3-444a-8119-836a664a614chttps://www.kens5.com/article/news/crime/san-antonio-domestic-violence-shooting-deadly-police/273-51bffbf8-a4fe-4557-8e91-e3c9f1002144https://www.ksat.com/news/local/2023/04/11/man-and-young-mother-hes-accused-of-shooting-at-north-side-home-had-recently-divorced-records/https://www.kens5.com/article/features/healing-through-advocacy-mother-who-survived-deadly-domestic-violence-attack-shares-story-to-save-lives-sapd-san-antonio-texas/273-35b70b05-67d8-4f9a-bae5-dd580c15ee2dhttps://www.kens5.com/article/news/crime/stephen-clare-san-antonio-murder-charge-indictment-texas-police-attack/273-0b167210-4f1e-4989-bd6a-f21aa3206248https://www.ksat.com/news/local/2023/04/18/mother-who-survived-attack-wants-public-to-know-about-progression-of-domestic-violence/Find and follow Mariah -TikTok: @mariahleegardnerFacebook: Mariah Lee GardnerOUR LINKS - Become a patron! Samantha raises concerns about the potential psychological and emotional effects on children who are gestated outside of a human womb and the importance of respecting their autonomy and well-being.Throughout the episode, Samantha draws on her background in theology and bioethics to provide insights into the moral implications of these technologies and the need for a deeper understanding of our purpose as human beings.
