From a host of The Daily Show and stand-up comic, Michael Kosta, comes a wildly funny and insightful memoir about his unlikely journey from professional tennis player (#864 in the world) to professional comedian (there's no ranking system in comedy but he's probably . . . top 50?). Before Michael Kosta was performing stand-up comedy specials and hosting The Daily Show, he was a professional tennis "star," reaching the lofty heights of the #864 ranked men's singles player in the world. Stop laughing. That's better than your world ranking. As a tennis pro, Kosta traveled across the globe, competing in such exotic locales as the Netherlands, Tokyo, and even rural Illinois before deciding to put down his racket and pursue a more stable and predictable career: comedy. In a completely unexpected and wild journey through the backwaters of professional tennis, Kosta shows the unlikely ways life on the court prepared him for life in front of a microphone. Like comedy, tennis is brutally competitive, and most people lose at it. Unlike comedy, no one in tennis puts a gun on the table as they count out your earnings in twenty-dollar bills at the end of the night. And then there are the things that have more to do with what happens to you-and what you end up learning-as part of growing up. Topics include: how to properly discard an unwanted European hard-boiled egg, giving CPR to your dead grandpa, cringe-worthy "sex" in the Red Light District, crying so hard in a car that strangers call the cops, and also happy things like what it feels like when your dreams come true. From misadventures in tennis to the humbling setbacks of comedy, Lucky Loser is a heart-filled story of making your own luck, the universal experience of failure, and the many ways in which we all inevitably lose on the way to success.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Nestled in between O'Connell Street and Connolly station lies an unassuming Dublin neighbourhood that holds a hidden history — it was once the site of Monto, a red-light district from the 1860s to 1925. Tens of thousands of women passed through its brothels, with some leaving after a short amount of time, and others going on to become the most ruthless madams any red-light district has ever seen. *This podcast features discussion of a sexual nature and might not be suitable for all ages* Host: Kevin Doyle, Guest; Dr Caroline WestSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Please consider supporting my channelI teamed up with journalist Renate van der Zee to uncover the truth about Amsterdam's Red Light District, and it's far darker than I expected. This isn't just about girls in windows or tourist fun—think pimps forcing women to earn $2,000 or face eating dog food, or a woman from Uganda trafficked, starved, and blackmailed with videos. Renate's spent over a decade researching this, even working in a shelter for trafficking victims, and what she found is grim: 50-80% of these women are controlled by pimps or trafficked, and legalization isn't fixing it—it's making it worse. In this video, we dive into the real stories: manipulation by pimps, the racism behind who ends up here, and how tourists unknowingly keep it going. Renate used to think legal brothels were a smart idea, but after hearing from survivors—like one forced into a bondage brothel—she's completely changed her mind. It's heavy stuff. Watch to see why Amsterdam's “clean” sex trade is a myth and what might actually help. Please consider supporting my channelI went to Amsterdam's Red Light District expecting a positive story about legal prostitution—turns out, it's a total gut punch. I teamed up with Elise, who's spent years helping women escape this life, and what she told me blew my mind. Did you know 98% of these women face violence—physical, emotional, you name it? And 50-80% are trafficked, forced into those windows while police barely blink. Elise is out there fighting for them, hearing stories of pimps threatening babies and girls so traumatized their hair falls out. Between 1860 and 1925, tens of thousands of women worked in Dublin's Monto, the largest red light district in Europe. It was a world of narrow alleyways full of brothels busy with sex workers, at a time when the Catholic church was trying to establish ideas around what a woman should be. Hint: it was very different to the women of Monto. What was life like for the women who lived and worked in Monto? How did these 'poor unfortunates', as they were known, create a community and support each other amidst such hard times? And how did they influence fashion trends of the time?Joining Kate today is the fantastic Caroline West, author of Wrong Women: Selling Sex in Monto, Dublin's Forgotten Red Light District, which is available now. This episode was edited by Tom Delargy and produced by Stuart Beckwith. Send your thoughts, feelings, opinions and suggestions to 0892096423!This week's Friday guest is Dr. Caroline West, who is the author of Wrong Women: Selling Sex in Monto, Dublin's Forgotten Red Light District which is out now. I loved this book, which is a fascinating look into the women who ran Monto and the reality of life for women working within it. Caroline is a great guest, and I loved learning about this part of Dublin's history and how it connects to so many different areas of Irish life both then and now. Also includes me complaining about MAFS Australia being too much of a commitment because it's three hours a week while speaking on my podcast which is... three hours a week. The self awareness is... lacking. To support the podcast and access bonus episodes, join the community on Patreon here.Theme Song: HowDoILook, Pillow Queens Hosted on Acast. Caroline West joined Pat in studio to discuss her new book Wrong Women: Selling Sex in Monto, Dublin's Forgotten Red Light District. She explores the lives of the women of Monto, the clientele who passed through it, and the social perceptions of such ‘fallen women.' Her book gives a voice to the women who have been rendered invisible from the historical record.

Life is full of stories, and whether we like it or not, they happen to us every day. Yes, these stories might sometimes turn out to be life changing events by themselves, but most of the time their impact is felt much smaller. This does not however lessen their importance. In fact, wouldn't it be correct to say that these ‘small stories' are the building blocks that we use to create the person we are today? So how do you tell your own story? Well, sometimes a personal narrative can be made much easier if you create a narrator and in our new podcast; that's exactly what Jeannie McGinnis has done. She uses the character of ‘Kathyrn McKenzie' to tell her diverse stories, ranging from the alluring lights of beauty pageants to a descent into the murky shadows of the Red Light District. From ‘Alaska to Texas' and ‘Irkutsk to Koh Samui'; Kathryn learns from both the mundane and the extraordinary, all the time recounting her humorous and sometimes gritty experiences. Many people focus on visiting Amsterdam when they visit the Netherlands. The Red Light District is a place that paranormal enthusiasts may find a ghost or two. There's spooksteeg or "ghost alley" and Bloedstraat, which is Blood Street. But the really promising haunted locations are in the outer areas of the country, the castles. There are stories of Blue Ladies, screaming hunters, dancing ghosts and Faust. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of the castles of the Netherlands. The Moment in Oddity features the Olmec Colossal Heads and This Month in History features Medgar Evers' Assassination. The epic journey begins! The Bowery Boys Podcast heads to old Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, to find traces of New Amsterdam, the Dutch settlement which became New York.We begin our journey at Amsterdam's Centraal Station and spend the day wandering the streets and canals, peeling back the centuries in search of New York's roots. Our tour guide for this adventure is Jaap Jacobs, Honorary Lecturer at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and the author of The Colony of New Netherland: A Dutch Settlement in Seventeenth-Century America.Jaap takes us around to several spots within the old medieval city -- Centrum, including the Red Light District -- weaving through the canals and along the harbor, in search of connections to New York's (and by extension, America's) past. This year marks the 400th anniversary of Dutch settlement in North America, led by the Dutch West India Company, a trading and exploration arm of the thriving Dutch empire. So our first big questions begin there:-- What was the Dutch Empire in 1624 when New Netherland was first settled? Was the colony a major part of it? Would Dutch people have even understood where New Amsterdam was?-- What's the difference between the Dutch East India Company and the Dutch West India Company?-- To what degree was New Amsterdam truly tolerant in terms of religion? Was it purely driving by profits and trading relationships with the area's native people like the Lenape?-- The prime export was the pelts of beavers and other North American animals. What happened to these thousands of pelts once they arrived in Amsterdam?-- How central were the Dutch to the emerging Atlantic slave trade? When did the first enslaved men and women arrive in New Amsterdam?-- And how are the Pilgrims tied in to all of this? Had they always been destined for the area of today's Massachusetts?Among the places we visit this episode -- the Maritime Museum, the Rijksmuseum, Amersham's oldest building Oude Kirk, the Schreierstoren (the Crying Tower) and many morePLUS: We get kicked out of a cloister!
