How did ideas of masculinity shape the British legal profession and the wider expectations of the white-collar professional? Brotherhood of Barristers: A Cultural History of the British Legal Profession, 1840–1940 (Cambridge University Press, 2024) by Dr. Ren Pepitone examines the cultural history of the Inns of Court – four legal societies whose rituals of symbolic brotherhood took place in their supposedly ancient halls. These societies invented traditions to create a sense of belonging among members – or, conversely, to marginalise those who did not fit the profession's ideals. Dr. Pepitone examines the legal profession's efforts to maintain an exclusive, masculine culture in the face of sweeping social changes across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Utilising established sources such as institutional records alongside diaries, guidebooks, and newspapers, this book looks afresh at the gendered operations of Victorian professional life. Brotherhood of Barristers incorporates a diverse array of historical actors, from the bar's most high-flying to struggling law students, disbarred barristers, political radicals, and women's rights campaigners. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Growing up in Brooklyn, hearing Streisand and classical music in the household, discovering the Beatles, The Who, and Hendrix, finding self-worth in comedy, doing open mics at 19, doing Last Comic Standing, moving to LA and landing movie roles, hanging out with Will Farrell, Vince Vaughn, and Luke Wilson, meeting the Monty Python crew, why Bob Dylan is a troll, and oh so much more! Probably the hardest we have laughed yet, check out the Bitter Buddha himself, Eddie Pepitone. •Eddie Pepitone•https://www.eddiepepitone.comInstagram: @eddiepep Twitter: @eddiepepitoneFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/eddie.pepitone#MusicIsFunnyPodcast #eddiepepitone#RaelynNelsonBand

You exit your cave to see the sun for the first time in three weeks. It hurts your eyes. You squint as you hold your palms to the sky. In the distance you hear what you remember as music. Almost blind in the full daylight, you let sound guide you as you put one foot in front of the other. Getting closer you hear... Tim Dillon? It IS him! You keep moving. The sound getting louder now, is that the sound of rain and jazz? What blessed creature would put together such an amazing feat of art and kindness in a time like this?! It's the glorious Eddie Pepitone himself! Hope you enjoy the show :) On todays show: Driving in the Rain, A conversation with Tim Dillon & Confessions of an ice road trucker Check out the video release today on Patreon and catch up on all our videos a week later at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCY6rV2LpSsOUczZ7IyNoGlA For additional content support Eddie on Patreon: www.patreon.com/eddiepepitone Write us a review on iTunes https://tinyurl.com/mv57us2d Send emails to: EddiePepPodcast@gmail.com Follow Tim The Tim Dillon Show Twitter: @TimJDillon Instagram: @TimJDillon Follow Eddie Twitter: @EddiePepitone Instagram: @EddiePep Go to www.eddiepepitone.com for show dates and all things Eddie Thanks to Mark Thompson for his beautiful voice See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
