What a day it is to be a Wests Tigers fan! Sure, we haven't kicked a ball yet in 2025, but today might just be one of the biggest in the club's long history. Today, Wests Tigers had four independent directors appointed to the club's board. This means that Wests Tigers now has a board that meets the independent review recommendations that we all fought so hard for. These are directors who bring talent and nous from different backgrounds and are giving of their time and professional skills for one reason - to advance the Wests Tigers. That is very exciting! Barry O'Farrell is one of the independent board members, he is expected to be voted in as Wests Tigers Chairman at a meeting later this month. Joining the representatives from Holman Barnes Group, Balmain Tigers, and Wests Magpies on the Wests Tigers board will be: Charlie Viola, Executive Chair of Viola Private Wealth, and former Partner at Pitcher Partners. Charlie is a prominent Financial Advisor and Industry leader, with exceptional financial management, commercial and strategy skills. Charlie grew up in Campbelltown and now lives in the Inner West. Michelle McDowell, former Managing Director of Allied Express, brings a wealth of experience in commercial, operations and logistics. Michelle has significant business acumen and is passionate about community. Michelle has deep commercial insights into the Western suburbs of Sydney. Annabelle Williams OAM PLY, Former Chair of the Athlete’s Commission for Paralympics Australia, and former Board member of the Paralympics Australia and Swimming Australia. Annabelle is a Lawyer and a decorated athlete, with deep insights in High-Performance, and is an advocate for inclusion and excellence in sport. Annabelle grew up in Balmain. To mark these important appointments, and this important day, Garry Watson and Joel Helmes sat down and recorded this latest edition of the Wests Tigers Unite podcast. On this week's episode of BTR, as we celebrate Wests Tigers 25th season in the NRL, we chat to the team's very first coach and Balmain Tigers legend, Wayne Pearce. Junior' covers plenty of ground as our NRL and NRLW teams prepare for big games at Leichhardt Oval over the next few days. We chat about his days as a 14-year-old selling hotdogs on the very same hill that would eventually be named in his honour. He talks about his time as the inaugural coach of the joint-venture club, revealing how a call from his 7-year-old daughter was the catalyst for his decision to call it quits after that first season. He also reflects on the early days, outlining some of the struggles and the benefits of the joint-venture club, and of course that very first game against a star-studded Broncos team. A fitness fanatic, Pearce tells us how and why he was a pioneer in that space. It was a handful of events, including the death of his father, and contracting Hepatitis B from the ‘magic sponge', that prompted Junior to complete a science degree and search for a healthier way of life. He recounts the ‘secret meeting' he had with the late, great Jack Gibson in the early 80s, when Jack was trying to lure Pearce from Leichhardt to Parramatta. We chat about club legends including Benny Elias, the late Keith Barnes, and Benji Marshall, and about the disappointment of losing the '89 Grand Final. Pearce also talks about the resilience and loyalty of Tigers' fans; confident the club has put the building blocks in place to ‘turn the Titanic around'. All that and more on this week's episode of Behind the Roar.

On this week's episode of BTR we chat to the man behind the design of our 2024 Indigenous Jersey which will be worn on Friday night against the Cowboys. It's a special bitesize edition of BTR where we recognise and celebrate the immense contribution indigenous players – past and present – have made to our game. Uncle Richard Campbell has very close ties to rugby league and indeed to Wests Tigers. He is from the same Indigenous community as current Tigers half, Jayden Sullivan, who quickly suggested that his Uncle Richard should design the jersey. He is also the cousin of former Balmain Tigers player Paul Davis. Richard talks about the significance of NRL Indigenous Round, the important role that rugby league plays in helping Indigenous youth, and his sheer delight in being involved with the club he supported as a child.

Fifty years on from Great Britain's last World Cup success in 1972, Dave Woods meets the legendary Brian Lockwood, a member of that victorious side and a four-time Challenge Cup winner with three different clubs. Lockwood won the cup twice with Castleford in successive seasons in 1969 and 1970, collected the Lance Todd Trophy in the all Humberside Final of 1980 and won again with Widnes a year later, whilst also enjoying success as a player in Australia. In a conversation full of anecdotes, Brian recalls nobody welcoming them home from France to celebrate that World Cup success and actually having to buy his own medal! TIME CODES: 01:45 – Brian's memories of the 1972 World Cup win 06:00 – He talks about the characters in that squad like David Topliss, who used his running skills to avoid the police after one boisterous night out in France! 08:10 – All the World Cup squad had to pay for their own World Cup winning medals 09:45 – Brian explains how his move to Australia came about, and how he was denied the agreed 10% of his transfer fee by Castleford. 15:00 – His experience turned sour at Balmain Tigers and he left, but their new coach turned up on his doorstep in Yorkshire and spent three days persuading him to change his mind! 21:00 – Brian tells how his dad rarely praised him, but winning the Lance Todd Trophy in 1980 brought him to tears. 25:00 – A renowned prop forward, he actually began his career for Castleford playing scrum-half. 28:00 – He once fell out with Eddie Waring after Eddie got his name wrong. 31:00 – Brian talks about the Castleford side that won back to back Challenge Cup Finals in 1969 and 1970 and life under tough coach Derek ‘Rocky' Turner. 35:25 – He doesn't enjoy the modern game, but hopes England can break their 50-year hoodoo in the World Cup
