The North Queensland Cowboys faced a defeat to Parramatta, but the scoreboard is the least of their worries. With superstar Tom Dearden sidelined for two months following a brutal syndesmosis injury, the real question is - who takes his place?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The North Queensland Cowboys are square in Parramatta's iron sights this week as the Eels head to Townsville for a gunfight in the tropics. It just so happens that the Eels are also targeting a Cowboy off the field with reports emerging today that Harrison Edwards could be a midseason transfer to the Blue & Gold. Forty20 is the lone sheriff in town this week as The Tip Sheet shoots from the hip. The weekend in review features wins for every grade beyond the NRL including a historic double for the Tarsha Gale. The pain just piles on for first grade as Ryley Smith and Will Penisini are both consigned to the injury ward. That directly impact Team List Tuesday as coach Jason Ryles continues to try and make adjustments on the fly with whoever and whatever he has available. The Cowboys flavoured podcast leans into a shootout on Friday night but the NRL is in a perpetual state of shootouts presently with the points flowing to an absurd degree. The Round 9 wrap looks at some of the more telling score lines as the field starts to shake out. Jahream Bula has inked a long term deal with the Tigers, Daniel Saifiti has bowed out of the NRL due to a shoulder injury while Cody Ramsey had an emotional return to first grade in the best (and worst) bits of the round.
Today's episode steps slightly outside the lines of basketball - but very much into the heart of coaching. I'm joined by Don Singe, who works with the North Queensland Cowboys as their Head of Leadership and Culture. Don's work sits at the intersection of high performance, leadership, and science-based wellbeing. He partners with corporate leaders, elite athletes, and coaches to build what he calls leadership capacity - helping people take ownership of themselves, their environment, and their process, while maintaining the mental and physical health needed to sustain performance over time. What stood out to me in Don's approach is that it's not about quick fixes or surface-level motivation. It's grounded in practical, actionable processes - and built around clarity, honesty, and the ability to adapt and progress along your own pathway. For those of us coaching in community basketball, that's highly relevant. Because whether you're coaching juniors on a weeknight or working in high performance, the challenge is the same, how do you lead people effectively, and how do you create an environment where they can thrive? This is a really thoughtful conversation that will challenge the way you think about leadership, wellbeing, and what it actually means to perform at your best.
Billy analyses the Brisbane Broncos' depth and the impact of Xavier Willison, discusses the Bulldogs' approach to team dynamics, and breaks down the current form of the North Queensland Cowboys - highlighting his admiration for Tom Chester and the challenge of facing them right now. We also examine the potential fallout from Jarome Luai’s visit to PNG on the Wests Tigers’ stability, take a hard look at the Tigers' current form, and offer perspective on the Dragons’ ongoing struggles as they head into a crucial bye period. Finally, Billy addresses the Storm’s crisis of confidence, the internal trust issues plaguing the side, and the difficult selection dilemmas facing Craig Bellamy, before wrapping up with a look at the surging South Sydney Rabbitohs and the impact of Bronson Garlick.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
