For Matt Collis, CFO of PairSoft, storytelling is more than a skill—it's a strategic tool for aligning teams and scaling businesses. Whether leading acquisitions or guiding cross-functional teams, Collis uses financial narratives to clarify priorities and inspire action. “Someone has to be the storyteller,” Collis tells us, emphasizing how framing financial data in relatable terms helps drive organizational alignment and decision-making.Collis' career began in accounting, where he spent seven years honing technical expertise in public accounting. However, he recognized early on that his ambitions extended beyond the technical realm. His transition into leadership roles provided opportunities to engage directly with business leaders, crafting financial strategies that supported operational goals. A pivotal chapter in his career came at Transaction Data Systems (TDS), where he helped the company scale dramatically. Over five years, TDS tripled in size through seven acquisitions, Collis tells us, requiring him to integrate diverse cultures, systems, and processes while scaling the finance team from 10 to 30 members. At PairSoft, Collis leverages these experiences to prioritize purposeful integration. He sees cultural alignment as key to long-term success, noting that acquisitions can falter without proactive efforts to unite teams around a shared vision. His strategic mindset also focuses on transparency and scalability, ensuring that financial strategies align with operational goals and are clearly communicated across the organization.

Law professor and author, Steven T. Collis, talks with Dave and Debbie about his recent publication titled 10 Habits to Change Our Potentially Toxic Conversations into Healthy Dialogues. How we can have better conversations with family and friends? Tune in to hear Collis' tips.
The First Amendment. Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition. It is meant to protect our freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition. On this show I sit down with Steven T. Collis. Steven is a law professor at the University of Texas-Austin. He's a former research fellow at Stanford Law School and is the founding faculty director of the Bech-Loughlin First Amendment Center and is one of the nation's leading thought leaders on the First Amendment and civil discourse. When there are issues and conflict around First Amendment rights, Steven is one of the first people called in by our nation. He recently wrote a book and the title itself reveals something profound to me. The title of the book is Habits of a Peacemaker: 10 Habits to Change Our Potentially Toxic Conversations into Healthy Dialogues. What does it say about how our culture is treating the First Amendment when one of it's leading experts doesn't write a book about what the First Amendment is or how to follow it, but instead speaks instead to the heart of human conflict around people's conflict with each other? Steven takes his expertise and platform to address what he feels is more important than legalities and right, and goes to where he feels the most hope is. The heart. Habit One in his book is titled, Intellectual Humility and Reframing, and starts off with this statement, “Most of us need to recognize that, most of the time, we don't know what we're talking about.” It just gets better. I'm having all my kids listen to this so we can discuss it together. I'd like everyone to hear this before the next election, and I'd recommend giving Steven's new book, Habits of a Peacemaker: 10 Habits to Change Our Potentially Toxic Conversations into Healthy Dialogues to everyone for Christmas. Actually, give it to them before Thanksgiving and reduce the family tensions by 95%. We argue and make things worse instead of making a difference. Let's you and I be different. In this episode, I talk about a new book that models the ten habits that any peacemaker should adopt. The author is Steven T. Collis and the book is Ten Habits of a Peacemaker. For those wondering how this book compares to the work of Ken Sande's The Peacemaker, the two are excellent companions. While Ken's is more theological (LISTEN), Steven's project looks at the process and psychological challenges of creating a space for constructive dialogue and common life. To that end, him and I spoke about the importance of habit formation, the challenges of navigating perception, the psychology underlying group-think, the various steps that an individual can take to develop the heart of a peacemaker, and much more. Steven researches and teaches on religion law, productive discourse, and other First Amendment topics at the University of Texas at Austin School of Law. He is the founding faculty director of the Bech-Loughlin First Amendment Center and its Law & Religion Clinic. Before joining Texas Law, he was a Research Fellow in the Constitutional Law Center at Stanford Law School. Faculty bio. My first conversation with Steven can be found here. Divorce may be normal, but, in too many Jewish communities, it hasn't been normalized. This episode features Ariel Collis and Reb. Ezra Weinberg, who each have experienced divorce and been underwhelmed by the response within their Jewish communities and are advocating for change (12:40). In the conversation, Collis and Weinberg imagine what more embracing responses might look like: from organizing meal trains and Shabbat invitations to, possibly, including divorce announcements in synagogue bulletins. Weinberg talks about his work with the group he's founded: Revoice, a Journey of Discovery for Jewish Families After Divorce. At the top of the show, executive producer Jacob Staub shares experiences from his own painful divorce. He also speaks about connections between Sukkot and divorce, including the holiday's focus on impermanence and the tradition of inviting guests into our sukkot. I learned a lot from this conversation with Steven T. Collis. I first heard about him when I received a copy of his newest book, Praying with the Enemy, from his publisher. Although I am not great with the names of the gentleman this book is based off of, their story is one that will positively influence everyone who reads it. Hearing the story of two men put into an impossible situation who help each other survive during the Korean War was very intriguing to me because I had 2 grandfathers who were stationed in Germany during the war. We also talk about something I never talk about, which is politics. We talk about some very real issues going on around the time we recorded back in June of this year. There is something on here for everyone, so take a listen and then share it with your people! Bio: Steven T. Collis is the author of the nonfiction books The Immortals and Deep Conviction and the novels Praying with the Enemy and At Any Cost. He is a law professor at the University of Texas-Austin School of Law and founding faculty director of UT's Bech-Loughlin First Amendment Center and related Law & Religion Clinic. Prior to his appointment at UT, he was the Olin-Darling Research Fellow in the Constitutional Law Center at Stanford Law School and an equity partner at Holland & Hart LLP, where he was the chair of the firm's nationwide religious institutions and First Amendment practice group. He is a sought-after speaker on both writing and religion law to audiences across the United States, including foreign diplomats from countries in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and South America on behalf of the United States State Department. He has been interviewed by and quoted in various news outlets, including The Deseret News, Bloomberg, The Washington Times, Law360, Public Square Magazine, The Salt Lake Tribune, PBS, The Denver Business Journal, Law Week Colorado, CBN News, and many others. Before embarking on his legal and writing career, Steven graduated magna cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif and served as an editor on the Michigan Law Review and the Michigan Journal of Race and Law. Steven also holds an M.F.A. in creative writing from Virginia Commonwealth University, where he served as the associate editor of the literary journal Blackbird. He completed his undergraduate studies, with university honors, at Brigham Young University. Originally from New Mexico, Steven lives in Austin with his wife and children. Can you imagine the power of praying with your enemy? Today's guest, Steven T. Collis, reveals insights from the true story of enemy soldiers who rely upon one another to survive physically and spiritually during the Korean War. Steven T. He has been interviewed by and quoted in various news outlets, including The Deseret News, Bloomberg, The Washington Times, Law360, Public Square Magazine, The Salt Lake Tribune, PBS, The Denver Business Journal, Law Week Colorado, CBN News, and many others. We discuss the following key points found in the harrowing and inspiring tale of Jae Pil and Ward Millar's escape from prison camps in Korea: finding ways to connect and relate to others around us despite our differences how stressful circumstances can either test our faith or inspire us to place a priority on our spirituality the importance of cultivating deep roots to ground our beliefs rather than allow circumstances to dictate our spiritual values how respecting others and building bridges of communication does not require us to compromise our own beliefs demonstrating resilience in our faith discerning between political affiliations and spiritual beliefs so the culture does not influence shifts in theology key tenets of religious freedom how to fulfill divine purpose as a sophisticated believer dangers of adopting an "us v.s. them" mentality and how to overcome this mindset trap benefits of taking time to listen to the needs and concerns of those with opposing views parallels between the Good Samaritan parable and choices made by Jae Pil and Ward Millar to help one another escape Collis relates the transformation of a non-believing American soldier who becomes a man of unshakable faith. We discuss the story's earning experiences applicable to our modern lives. Collis points out the principle of losing one's self to find true identity and purpose in Christ as demonstrated in the novel. We explore the universal tendency to question God during crisis and how we often cannot recognize his actions on our behalf at the time of struggle. Episode 175 is with Steven Collis. Steven is the author of the new book "Praying with the Enemy." “Based on a true story, Praying with the Enemy is a tale of courage, determination, unlikely friendship, and enduring faith,” says Collis. “We have reached a point in our country where far too many people simply cannot communicate with one another. Civil dialogue about important and critical issues, in particular, is collapsing. Sharing important stories like this from our past allows us to look at lessons learned and the ways in which they can help us better understand who we are today.” Trained in law, religion, and creative writing, Steven T. Collis is a storyteller at heart. The author of Deep Conviction and The Immortals, he is also a law professor at the University of Texas—Austin, where he is the faculty director of the Bech-Loughlin First Amendment Center. Prior to that, he was a research fellow at Stanford Law School. He has been quoted in media outlets nationwide and speaks across the United States and the world on writing, his books, and the freedoms found in the First Amendment.Synopsis:While Millar is imprisoned and unable to walk, and the North Korean army grows increasingly suspicious of future ally Kim Jae Pil's actions under their controlling regime, it seems impossible that either man will find the freedom they so desperately desire. But when these wartime foes cross paths, they find in each other an unlikely companion. Despite speaking different languages, Millar and Kim find common ground in their fragile faith and must rely on each other to undertake a daring escape.
