Stuart MacGill makes his official co-host debut on Cricket Unfiltered, joining Menners in-studio for a wide-ranging, unfiltered discussion on Australian cricket. MacGill goes deep on spin bowling, selection philosophy, and his frustration with Australia overlooking specialist spinners — particularly at the SCG. The pair also unpack George Bailey's role as selector, the future of Australia's bowling depth, and the dangers of prioritising short-term results over long-term development. The conversation then shifts to the Big Bash League, with analysis of the Sixers' finals loss, the Scorchers' dominance, Steve Smith's impact on the tournament, and whether the BBL schedule and pitches are helping or hurting the spectacle. The episode finishes with strong views on BBL privatisation, ICC geopolitics, Bangladesh's World Cup exclusion, and the growing influence of India on world cricket — setting the tone for what MacGill brings as a co-host: experience, honesty, and zero filter. The Big Bash League reaches fever pitch as Steve Smith and David Warner produce a stunning SCG spectacle, while controversy erupts around player behaviour, team dynamics, and proposed new BBL rules. Menners and Damien Watson unpack Perth Scorchers' dominance, Sydney Sixers' brutal finals travel scenario, and Babar Azam's difficult tournament under intense scrutiny. The episode also features strong reactions from Mitchell Starc and David Warner to the newly announced “designated batter” rule, analysis of record-breaking TV ratings for the BBL, and discussion around Australia's T20 squad selection for the upcoming Pakistan tour. Broader questions about the future of the Big Bash, including private ownership and long-term identity, are also explored. Plus, a major show update: former Australian Test spinner Stuart MacGill is announced as a regular new co-host, adding a fresh and experienced voice to the program moving forward. The episode wraps with positive news on Damien Martyn's recovery and a look at emerging Australian talent in the T20 format. The Ashes Daily 2025, 5th Test, Sydney Day 2: It was a day for batting, in both camps, as the SCG provided some challenges but also some opportunities. Joe Root's masterclass century headlined day two of the Ashes Sydney Test, steering England to a competitive first-innings total of 384 all out. The former England captain showcased exceptional composure and skill, converting his overnight score into a stellar 160 runs—his second ton of the series—earning a well-deserved standing ovation at the SCG. However, England's strong position was quickly undermined by Jamie Smith, whose "horrific" and "dismal" dismissal to a poor shot off part-time spinner Marnus Labuschagne sparked immediate controversy and widespread criticism from cricket pundits, leaving fans frustrated with the team's questionable decision-making. Australia's reply was both swift and aggressive, launching a strong fightback in the evening session. Although Captain Ben Stokes managed to claim the only two wickets for England, including the crucial dismissal of Usman Khawaja, the hosts dominated the final hours. Travis Head was particularly destructive, smashing an unbeaten 91 runs off just 87 balls. Australia closed the day at 166-2, trailing by 218 runs. Head's dominant display has put the pressure back on England's bowlers, setting the stage for a compelling Day 3 in the Sydney Ashes Test, as Australia looks to close the deficit rapidly. England were bowled out for 384, with Joe Root's superb 160 anchoring the innings before Michael Neser finished with four wickets. In reply, Australia batted positively in fading light, led by Travis Head's attacking 91*, before a late wicket gave England a small lift. The two-day Boxing Day Test continues to spark a wider conversation about the state of Test cricket. Corbin Middlemas and Ed Cowan begin in Melbourne, unpacking the fallout at the MCG, Matt Page facing the media, and how a Test meant to anchor the summer instead triggered public unease, with one listener summing it up starkly as “the death of Test cricket.”The discussion then moves through the financial cost of shortened Tests and why, as Cowan puts it, “it's not a slow slippery slope, it's a snowball,” before turning to the Big Bash, where a potential sale is unpacked through the realities of revenue distribution and governance, and why those decisions now sit at the centre of cricket's future. Attention finally shifts to Sydney, where the unexpected spotlight falls on SCG curator Adam Lewis, and what Ed says there is “a lot riding on this Test.” Cricket always finds room for the absurd, it ends with an unlikely opening partnership: Salt and Pepper.ABC Grandstand cricket commentator Corbin Middlemas is joined by Ed Cowan to bring you all the highlights and match analysis to keep you up to speed. In this episode we answer emails from JT, Phil, and Glenn. We revel in the updates to the TestFolio tools, weigh how tilting toward small cap value can lift safe withdrawal rates but also reduces overall diversification, return to KBWP and how property and casualty insurance companies can provide value-tilted diversification, and discuss the tracking results reported on the About page at the website.Links:Testfolio 5% Withdrawal Backtest Comparison: testfol.io/?s=74fuq6N5WWdTestfolio Comparison of SCV, LCG, LCV and SCG: testfol.io/?s=4eqimbZveGXWeird Portfolio: Weird Portfolio – Portfolio ChartsTestfolio KWBP and BRK-B Analysis: testfol.io/analysis?s=l34pkinSxdeFund Seeder Tracker Site: FundSeeder - Empowering Top Traders with Capital and InsightsBreathless Unedited AI-Bot Summary:Ready to push past rules of thumb and actually pressure-test a retirement portfolio? We dig into how far a DIY investor can tilt toward small cap value to raise a safe withdrawal rate, what history really shows across 30- and 50-year windows, and why correlation—not bravado—decides whether you can keep spending through ugly markets. Using new Testfolio features with 100-year factor data, we compare the Golden Ratio and Golden Butterfly against more value-heavy mixes and pinpoint where the extra “cowbell” helps and where it just adds stress. We also open a less-traveled door inside equities: property and casualty insurers. Whether you own them through KBWP or direct index the top names, this sleeve has delivered rare intra-equity diversification, often keeping pace with broad markets while zigging in years like 2022. We share the practical trade-offs—expense ratios vs. tracking error, simplicity vs. tax loss harvesting—and explain when the ETF is the smarter, lower-hassle choice. If you already own Berkshire Hathaway for your value core, you'll hear why insurers can complement or substitute without bloating overlap.Context matters, so we pull back the curtain on our publicly tracked taxable account and why it can look extreme in a bad year and strong in a good one. The whole-portfolio view is far steadier, closer to a risk parity blend of stocks, long treasuries, and diversifiers like gold and managed futures. The takeaway: if you want a withdrawal rate you can live with, build for multiple regimes—blend small cap value and large cap growth, keep long bonds for deflation shocks, and add real diversifiers that cut correlation when you need it most. Subscribe, share this with a DIY investor who loves data, and leave a review to tell us where you'd tilt next.Support the show
