Send a textIn this episode of Bench Boost our team revisits method detection limits (MDLs) with a focus on why mining applications often produce higher MDLs than expected. Autumn contrasts instrument detection limits with method detection limits, which reflect real sample matrices, interferences, and method variability. Liv explains mining-specific drivers of elevated MDLs, including aggressive sample preparation and impacts from dilution and high total dissolved solids. Mike closes the episode this week by discussing practical ways to improve MDLs.
Following the weekend' FA Cup football and last night's 5th round draw Suj and James revaluate the outlook for Chip usage for the rest of the season, and though current projections remain unchanged there's lots that could change in the coming weeks and that may force many FPL managers to move away from the current template strategy. What will happen to the Manchester City v Crystal Palace fixture? Could Gameweek 33 be the only remaining Double Gameweek? Should Bench Boost be used now or held for later? It's all covered, including alternative 'out' chip strategies if at short notice Gameweek 32 would look bad for a Wildcard followed by a Gameweek 33 Bench Boost, why certain fixtrures could be forced into certain weeks, if non European teams could have postponements go into random weeks and more, including why the next big event that could alter the landscape is the scheded April TV selections... Suj and James review all the action from Gameweek 8 which included some extraodinary individual showings as Erling Haaland recorded another brace, Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring a hat-trick but underperforming (!) his xG on the day and Cody Gakpo scored, hit the woodwork three times and missed a sitter. Those Gakpo misses were in a rare Anfield Liverpool defeat that means it's four defeats in a row for The Champions in all competitions. What's going wrong? Manchester United were the victors at Anfield and now may feel they can put a consistent run of results together. Plus, Ange Postecoglu's spell in charge of Nottingham Forest is over, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth was carnage, Tottenham's poor showings finally caught up with them, while Burnley and Sunderland defensive assets rewarded the FPL managers who started them or used them as part of a Bench Boost. While Arsenal and Chelsea assets continue to appeal following away wins and clean sheets recorded with Gabriel and Reece James the biggest returners. With wins for Arsenal and City, the onus was on the chasing pack to keep pace with the two front-runners. Arne Slot's Liverpool though, lose their third game in a row at Anfield to Manchester United, while Bournemouth and Palace play out a superb 3-3 draw, with a hat-trick from Mateta. Chelsea breeze past Forest and in doing so, sack Ange Postecoglu. Spurs stutter at home to Villa and Brighton beat Newcastle at the Amex. Gameweek 6 brought with it many juicy fixtures, whether that be Man City's 5-1 demolition of Burnley (Haaland Triple Captainers rejoice), Crystal Palace's dismantling of Liverpool, or Arsenal's dogged comeback against Newcastle. But none of these events can rival the miracle that was Aston Villa's victory against Fulham and Watkins getting on the scoresheet (Jiayang rejoices). Looking ahead to Gameweek 7, we consider the appeal of Arsenal players (or lack thereof) ahead of their good fixture run, before unpacking Jacob's decision to transfer in João Pedro for Bowen—bad thought process or simply unlucky outcome? Then, we start to brainstorm strategies for the Bench Boost, the last chip that we have yet to mention in depth on the Fortress. Could Sunderland offer the perfect cheap yet solid options? Finally, in our Captaincy segment, we compare Haaland (decent fixture + excellent form), Saka (excellent fixture but nonexistent form + uncertain minutes), and Watkins (excellent fixture but practically nonexistent form). Call him insane, but Jiayang may or may not be leaning towards Watkins—which may or may not be due to a pact that he may or may not have made with the devil…Follow us on Twitter: @FplFortress

With Manchester City entering a positive swing of fixtures that begins with the visit of Burnley, Suj and James decided this would be a good time to revaluate strategy for chip usage in the first half of the season. The Podcast kicks off with discussion on if Crystal Palace's progress in the Carabao Cup could lead to blanks and doubles in December and there's an assessment of 'danger fixtures' where rotation could bite due to short turnarounds or difficult fixtures either side of 'easier' games.
