The Berrima Courthouse in the beautiful Southern Highlands of New South Wales in Australia is a great example of colonial architecture. The courthouse was a necessity as the colony was built on convicts and many continued their wayward deeds. The village of Berrima itself was an important stop on the path from Sydney to Victoria and there were several hotels in the area. Many historic structures still remain and spirits just may be inhabiting them, including the ghost of Australia's first serial killer. Join us as we explore the history and haunts of Berrima, Australia! The Moment in Oddity features the Crawfordsville Monster and This Month in History features the birth of Edward Everett. Our location was suggested by Julie Barton.

Hickson House will be producing gins, aperitifs, whiskies and specialist spirits crafted with locally-sourced ingredients, such as native botanicals from The Loch farm in Berrima, NSW. There will be immersive, experiential tours, culminating with tastings, a spirit store and private dining experiences; with a mezzanine lounge sitting above an expansive bar, serving bespoke cocktails alongside a botanical-inspired menu. The total business covers 450 square metres with 180sqm dedicated to the bar, kitchen and mezzanine area. The space is designed by Sydney's Steel & Stitch and Sara Mathers from the UK, working together to create a New York warehouse-style bar beside an active distillery. As you'll hear in this episode, some of the other details are still under wraps. I did what I could to get as much info as possible for you. Now, as there are more voices in this episode than we're accustomed to, it probably helps to tell you that Julian is the one with the Australian accent. But it's Mikey you'll hear from first up, giving you the background on how the project was first conceived. Spencer and Chris talk about the Axe murderer of Berrima and the Rugrats Creepy Pasta Theory
Featuring: Steve Collins Originally, Berrima was designed to be the capital of the Southern Highlands. Those plans went awry when the railway was built. The Old Hume Highway ran right through Berrima, but the railway was diverted in another direction, passing through Mittagong, Bowral and Moss Vale, which allowed those towns to flourish and Berrima to remain rather sedentary. In episode 50 of the Mind Your Own Retirement podcast, Deeksie and Kaye get back together to talk money, health and travel for those in retirement – or planning it. First up, author and accountant Dr Adrian Raftery, a.k.a. ‘Mr Taxman’, shares updates on ways retirees can maximise their tax returns as the end of the financial year beckons. And whether you’re enjoying the sunshine in Broome or dodging rain in Adelaide, it’s still winter all over Australia. So Dr Billy Stoupas, practising GP and spokesperson for the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, highlights the winter maladies we need to avoid, and how to do so. It’s great to be finally emerging from the strict social distancing triggered by COVID-19, which means travel is right back on the agenda, with New South Wales our first destination in focus. The folk at Destination NSW have just released a list of 213 things to do, revolving around food, culture, nature, wildlife, beaches and Indigenous activities and experiences. We speak with Izabella Lane, tourism coordinator for the Southern Highlands, about this special region of NSW, the main towns of Moss Vale, Mittagong, Bowral, Bundanoon and Berrima, and the amazing Pie Festival that is celebrated across the region in June.
