Jailhouse Doc: Treating Humans, Not Crimes | Dr. Sandy Kershaw

She Wasn't Born Yesterday

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 11, 2026 37:15

Dr. Sandy Kershaw is a General Practitioner with over 16 years of experience working at Long Bay Correctional Complex in Malabar, Sydney. Her professional background is diverse and includes working in homeless health, palliative care, Aboriginal medical health, and with the military. Dr. Kershaw unexpectedly found her calling in corrections health, where she treats a variety of inmates with different medical needs, ranging from acute to chronic conditions. Key Takeaways: Dr. Sandy Kershaw has extensive experience in diverse medical fields, and her work in the correctional system emerged from an initial locum stint that became a fulfilling, long-term career. The complexity and unpredictability of jail healthcare challenge medical professionals to adapt quickly, often dealing with emergencies and long waiting lists. Despite the harsh environment, Dr. Kershaw highlights the importance of treating every inmate with dignity and the significant impact such care can have. Dr. Kershaw values the unique medical challenges presented in a correctional environment, offering an opportunity to handle complex cases not commonly seen in regular general practice. Security protocols and the presence of contraband items significantly influence the healthcare dynamics within a prison, but appropriate measures ensure a surprisingly safe work atmosphere. Notable Quotes: "The patients didn't scare me; it was the physical environment. Shawshank Redemption comes to mind—very oppressive." "You see things you do not see in the average general practice. You see things that otherwise you only see in textbooks." "A lot of people who committed certain offenses are very often victims themselves." "It's an insane job, but it is very enjoyable. I love the medicine and the difference you can make." "Incarceration in Australia is designed to curtail the freedom of movement, not to punish through other mechanisms." The Family Doctor: Lessons Learned. Wisdom Shared.

This is a brief episode, but one which we hope you will find entertaining and motivating. Listen and be motivated to "raise the lid" of Family Medicine! We thank you for listening!

The Association of Salaried Medical Specialists believes fewer people are receiving care than we're being told. Its new report —which looks at seven districts between 2023 and 2025— shows about 20% of GP specialist referrals are being declined. Executive Director Sarah Dalton told Mike Hosking it's down to staff shortages across the public and private sectors. She says it shows Health New Zealand isn't managing unmet need, and criticises the fact our targets-focused system doesn't provide targets for the workforce. Peter Tait has been a General Practitioner for over 40 years, 30 of them in Aboriginal health in Central Australia. He was 2007 RACGP General Practitioner of the Year and 2017 Public Health Association Australia Sidney Sax medalist. He teaches Population Health at ANU. For a slightly older episode, our interview with Mark Diesendorf explored issues referred to in this episode such as state capture of government policy. For further reading, you may be interested in Michael's blog article for Population Media Centre, which argues why large and rapidly growing populations can dilute democracy. This is explored further in my article on The Overpopulation Project: “The Planet Cannot Hold the Weight of 8.2 billion Narratives.” During the interview, Peter explains the concept of Sociocracy and its capacity to achieve consensus even with large and disperse populations. In the episode introduction, Michael reflects on his recent presentation on Degrowth at Perth's Curtin University. Aiming to engage students emotionally with Degrowth as a moral imperative, the feedback was hugely encouraging, as the below photo hopefully attests. Are you tired of managing symptoms without ever finding a cure? I sit down with Dr Jen Draper, a former General Practitioner with 30 years of experience who walked away from a thriving clinical practice to redefine what "healing" actually means.Together, we pull back the curtain on the sickness industry and the subtle dependency model created by modern healthcare. Jen shares her personal journey recognizing that her physical pain was a direct message from her body that she was on the wrong path.Key Information 01:29 Jen shares her journey with pain and excessive weight, mirroring her emotional state. 04:49 Jen shares her personal struggle and realization that the pain in her feet was a somatic metaphor: every step she took into her high-stress clinic was a step on the wrong path and healing only began once she stepped away06:21 Both former medics discuss the difficulty of relinquishing the prefixes of Dr or Nurse when your entire self-worth has been layered on top of a professional persona since childhood16:00 Jen offers a cynical yet candid look at Continuing Professional Development. She describes how pharmaceutical companies influence medical education and how doctors are often trained to switch patients from one form of chemical dependency to another26:03 The conversation shifts to a specific nutritional approach that challenges Western medicine. Jen explains why she stopped prescribing expensive compounded supplements in favor of bioavailable copper, magnesium and the emotional willingness to let go34:54 Jen argues that the current system encourages us to outsource our health to experts, whereas true healing requires taking radical self-responsibility and trust your own body's intuition41:58 A provocative look at why preventative care can actually be a nanny state tactic that keeps the nervous system in a state of constant reactivity and fear, often leading to false positives and unnecessary treatments49:54 Jen describes a startling experiment using a magnet to detect iron filings in fortified cereals and multivitamins, illustrating how the sickness industry may be contributing to iron toxicity under the guise of nutritionReady to stop being a patient and start being your own healer? Dr Jen's Bio Dr Jen Draper is a former medical doctor with nearly 30 years of clinical experience who chose to leave the conventional healthcare system after recognising the subtle dependency model it creates. After decades of prescribing within a system structured around symptom management, she began asking a deeper question. Why are intelligent, capable adults becoming lifelong patients of their own patterns?Today, she is the founder of Well Being Holistic, the creator of The Insourcing Method™ and The Unpatient Way™, and the author of UNPATIENT: How to STOP Outsourcing Your Healing and Rebuild Self Trust in a World That Profits from Your Disconnection. Her work helps high performing professionals recalibrate nervous system conditioning, reorganise survival based identity structures, and reclaim regulated clarity. Her approach integrates nervous system science, subconscious restructuring, and Human Design™ as a mirror for self recognition rather than a belief system. She is known for her grounded authority, clinical precision, and calm clarity. Dr. Patel shares his personal journey from being, in his own words, “the least vegan person” to going vegan for ethical reasons after questioning why we care for some animals while eating others. That realization sparked a deeper interest in plant-based nutrition, performance, and lifestyle medicine, and ultimately shaped both his medical practice and public advocacy. In this episode: Whether plant-based diets can support muscle growth and strength training The cultural link between meat consumption and masculinity Common myths about protein, muscle, and vegan nutrition How misinformation spreads online, and how to evaluate nutrition claims critically What it really takes to thrive on a plant-based diet as an active individual About the Guest Dr. Minil Patel is a UK-based General Practitioner and Lifestyle Medicine Physician with a special interest in plant-based nutrition and strength training. He graduated from King's College London in 2016 with an MBBS and a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience. After adopting a vegan lifestyle in 2017 for ethical reasons, Dr. Patel completed the Plant Based Nutrition course at the University of Winchester. He also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from King's College London and a diploma from the International Board of Lifestyle Medicine. He is an active member of Plant Based Health Professionals UK and serves as an ambassador for Climategames and Running On Plants. Dr. Patel was featured in the documentary I Could Never Go Vegan and has appeared in Men's Health Online. He regularly speaks at events such as Vegfest, Vegan Camp Out, and VegMed on topics including plant-based diets for athletes, muscle building, and performance. He shares evidence-based insights on veganism, nutrition, health, and fitness through his Instagram account @drironjunkie. __________________________________________________________________

In the first episode of 2026, Ben is joined by Dr Zalan Alam, General Practitioner, Director of Medical Education and GP Partner, to explore Rochdale's selection as a site for the National Neighbourhood Health Implementation Programme (NNHIP) and what this means in practice for general practice and PCNs. The discussion focuses on improving patient journeys, particularly for frail patients and those in the last year or 1,000 days of life, by strengthening connectivity between primary care, community services, hospices, ambulance services and acute trusts, using standardised frailty assessments, shared care plans and tools such as the Greater Manchester Care Record. The episode also covers targeted neighbourhood working in Rochdale South, the importance of peer leadership and measurable impact for frontline practices, and what comes next as the programme moves from planning into delivery, with an emphasis on locally adaptable models rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Introduction (00:08) Why Rochdale was selected for NHIP (00:29) Population, PCNs and deprivation (01:22) How the programme is structured (02:42) Early priorities and patient journey focus (03:35) Targeting Rochdale South as a proof of concept (05:33) Connectivity gaps and 'lightbulb moments' (06:25) How neighbourhood working operates in practice (07:03) Standardising care plans and frailty pathways (08:40) Using data to identify priority cohorts (10:07) Shared tools, shared vision (12:01) Impact on PCNs and general practice (14:09) System-level integration and why it works in Rochdale (16:12) Moving from planning to delivery (17:42) Measuring impact and managing expectations (18:40) Learning from other NHIP sites (19:13) Reflections & next steps (20:26) Listen to Zalan's previous podcasts 'Innovative intermediate care' here and 'Integration working in practice' here. It also replaced Moscow as the capital of the growing empire that stretched across two continents. It was also the site of the Russian Revolution, when the Bolsheviks led by Vladimir Lenin seized power in 1917. Since then, he's helped over 115 patients in Taupō put type 2 diabetes into remission—an achievement that's not only reshaped his practice, but challenged the conventional approach to chronic disease management. He was named General Practitioner of the Year in 2021.In this conversation, we explore what "remission" really means in clinical terms, the systems that help sustain it, and the biomarkers that shift most consistently. Glen also shares insights on the psychology of behaviour change, the risks and rewards of keto, and the real-world barriers to scaling this model across New Zealand. They also have a frank conversation of the level of knowledge that GPs have to prevent and treat the modern day health crisis that NZ (like most countries) is facing.Glen Davies: https://reversalnz.co.nz/team/dr-glen-davies/ Contact Mikki:https://mikkiwilliden.com/https://www.facebook.com/mikkiwillidennutritionhttps://www.instagram.com/mikkiwilliden/https://linktr.ee/mikkiwilliden

This episode, we welcome to the podcast, James Machin, to talk about the new edition of The Stark Munro Letters (1895) he has edited for Edinburgh University Press. About James Machin James is a writer, researcher, and editor, whose recent books include the Edinburgh Edition of the Works of Arthur Conan Doyle's version of The Stark Munro Letters (2024) and The Strange Stories of John Buchan for British Library Publishing (2025). He edited Faunus, the journal of The Friends of Arthur Machen, for over ten years, and has taught at Birkbeck (University of London), the Royal College of Art, and the University of Bedfordshire. He has recently commenced work on the Edinburgh Edition of Round the Fire Stories. The Stark Munro Letters (Edinburgh University Press, 2025) The first new edition of The Stark Munro Letters since the early 1980s Contains detailed introduction and scholarly apparatus Extensive notes explore the historical and biographical references Appendixes that collect original transcriptions of previously inaccessible archival material Ideal for students and scholars interested in Arthur Conan Doyle, medical fiction, popular fiction, autobiographical fiction, and epistolary fiction This is the first scholarly edition of Arthur Conan Doyle's epistolary novel, originally serialised in the Idler, 1894–95, and long out of print. With its first-hand testimony of the life of a doctor at the outset of his career in the late nineteenth century, The Stark Munro Letters will appeal to anyone with an interest in medical history. It is based on his experiences during the eight years he spent as a General Practitioner, before becoming a professional author in 1890. By some way the most autobiographical of Conan Doyle's novels—written at the height of Holmes's popularity—it is also the most personal in terms of presenting his worldview during his formative years, including ruminations on moral philosophy, religion, science, and evolutionary theory. Moreover, it is entertaining and incredibly vivid—a contemporary critic described the mercurial Cullingworth as ‘one of the finest characters Dr. Doyle has yet drawn'.
