Remake Learning Days is marking its 10th anniversary this year, and the festival has grown into something genuinely remarkable: 266 mostly free events, 240 organizations, and more than 50 school districts across Southwestern Pennsylvania, all opening their doors from May 1–23. Yu-Ling Cheng, co-producer, and Stephanie Lewis, director of relationships at Remake Learning Days, join Executive Producer, Mallory Falk to talk  through what's happening this year, from archaeology at Fort Macintosh to downtown fishing to performing arts — and why families keep coming back. It's a full-on cosmic horror double feature this week as we dive into Color Out of Space (2019) and The Endless (2017) — two movies where the universe is broken, time is meaningless, and Nicolas Cage might be your dad.We kick things off with Richard Stanley's goo-soaked nightmare Color Out of Space, where Nicolas Cage yells about alpacas, chugs space milk, and absolutely loses his marbles in a way only Nicolas Cage can. There's a meteor in the yard, purple lightning in the well, and a disturbing lack of child supervision. Bonus points for Joely Richardson slowly fusing with her son in the kitchen blender from hell. Oh, and Tommy Chong lives in the woods recording alien vibes on cassette like a stoner Fox Mulder. Then we head into The Endless (dir. Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead) — a movie where time loops are everywhere, everyone's in a cult (sorta), and reality is held together by what may or may not be a cosmic sadist in the sky. Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead star as brothers returning to their old cult campsite, only to discover that time is a circle, no one leaves the tent, and the beer is still free (so... not all bad?).Derick tries to unpack the cult's Netflix-worthy pitch. [VIDEO available on Spotify.] Imagine a vagina. You might be thinking of a passive tube, patiently waiting for a penis to shoot out sperm — and you wouldn't be alone. From Aristotle to Darwin, tons of prominent nerds classified males as the active sexual players: They're coercing, manipulating and harassing to reproduce, while the females are passive, coy, chaste. But animal ecologist Dr. Tiana Pirtle is here to give us the real story. Because once scientists started investigating what really goes on in the vaginas of the animal queendom, they realized that — far from being docile tubes — vaginas are packed with their own weaponry, tools and secret chambers. It turns out that both penises and vaginas were allowed to fight in the evolutionary arms race. Pirtle breaks open a box filled with animal vaginas to tell us all about it.   Find our transcript here: https://bit.ly/ScienceVsWhenVaginasAttack In this episode, we cover: (00:00) A Box Full of Vaginas (02:42) The 'Chaste' Female is Born (06:51) The Duck Vagina that Launched a Thousand Ships (11:06) Hyenas and their Pseudo Penises (13:23) Water Striders and their Genital Shields (16:53) Snakes and their Two Vaginas?!  (20:28) Alpacas and their Regal Vaginas (25:31) The Rainbow of Vaginas This episode was produced by Wendy Zukerman with help from Michelle Dang, Rose Rimler, Meryl Horn, and Ekedi Fauster-Keeys.
