In this episode of The Writing Life, writers Alex Allison, George Harrison, and Ashley Hickson-Lovence share their insights into writing about sport and modern masculinity.   Alex Allison is a writer from London. He is the author of two novels, published by Dialogue. His second novel, Greatest of All Time, was released on 30th January 2025. With humour, heart and a touch of rebellion, Greatest of All Time explores queer love and the trials of growing up in the hyper-masculine world of sport.   George Harrison is a writer based in Norwich. His debut novel, Season, is published by Eye Books. Set on the terraces of a fictionalised football club and old through thirty-eight chapters – one for each game of the Premier League campaign – Season is a lyrical, hypnotic and gently uplifting study of loneliness and modern masculinity. He wrote Season while participating in our Escalator New Writing Fellowships.   Ashley Hickson-Lovence is a novelist, poet, literary critic and Lecturer of Creative Writing. His second novel Your Show, published by Faber in 2022, was shortlisted for the East Anglian Book Awards. Your Show is the thrilling story of one man's pioneering efforts to make it, against the odds, to the very top of his profession as a football referee and beyond.   Together, they discuss their novels Greatest of All Time and Season, and how they capture the unifying role of football. They also touch on the framework of their novels, the importance of writing a novel that you would want to read, and the challenge of balancing modern masculinity with intimacy and vulnerability in their writing.

1973 was a great year for fans of high-strangeness UFO reports. The most famous of these is the October 11th case from Pascagoula, Mississippi, where Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker said they were taken aboard a craft by elephant-skinned humanoids with crab-claw like hands. After their story hit the papers, an article appeared in the October 18, 1973, edition of The Pensacola News ( part 1, part 2 ) headlined “Pickup by UFO Reported.” According to the article, a “Pensacola businessman” (later identified as an electrician) reported an encounter of his own, and his story was even more dramatic than Hickson and Parker's. UFO investigators at the time seem to have mostly ignored it, as it doesn't appear in periodicals of the day such as The APRO Bulletin or Flying Saucer Review. This might have been due to the continued focus on the Pascagoula case and the extreme nature of the claim by the man in Pensacola. Read more →Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/podcast-ufo--5922140/support.

It was just before dark and we had the only boat on the water. It's a small reservoir in Montana. The water was like glass it was so calm. As we got out to the middle the water swirled next to the boat like a whale turned next to us. The swirl was as big or bigger than our boat. It was extremely creepy so we headed to the dock! Still not sure what the swirl was caused by but maybe an under water spring... It was in 50' of water though.   Alan Dumitrescu I'm the only person at this lake. You know the sound of a rod wishing through the air on a hard cast? Yeah that sounds happened in the wooded area behind me just once like a cast. Only similar sounds I've ever heard is bigger birds wings. I looked no birds anywhere no turkeys roosting in trees for the night. The sun was setting at this point. I didn't see anything but it was real close. My only other thought cause a bunch of neighboring property dogs were all fired up a few minutes earlier and they had settled down just before I heard it. Never heard bobcat hiss in person but at that point since they are in that area is all I could think and why the dogs were fired up. So I hurried the hell out of there. I'm not tangling with big kitty if that's what it was.   John J Murphy Well I grew up in Salem Ma and used to fish a cemetery pond so I'd go with yes   Phantom Casters From Rick Webster I was fishing the first beach at Sandy Hook in Jersey one late September. When I got to the parking lot and not another car in sight. I set up, soaking clams on two rods before sun-up. As the pre-dawn light began to show over the horizon, a THICK bank of fog rolled in. Slack tide and zero wind…very peaceful but not expecting anything spectacular. Suddenly, about 500 seagulls that had been resting on the roof of the bath house lifted into the air and began to dive nosily into the surf. The fog was so thick I couldn't see them, but I could hear them, not 20 yards off the beach. Figuring a blitz of snappers, I sent a 3-ounce Yo-Zuri popper into the fog and immediately came tight on what turned out to be a 12lb Albie. As I was fighting this fish, the fog began to lift and I could see I was surrounded by 25 to 30 other surfcasters. I had no clue how they suddenly appeared as this stretch of beach is wide open, so I would have seen them before the fog came in. No one spoke and the only sounds were screaming gulls and drags as we all enjoyed a rare mix of blues and albies for the next 30 minutes in a classic fall blitz. As the action died down, the fog rolled in again and I appeared to be all alone again. Since I was tired and a little spooked by the mornings events, I packed up my gear and headed back to the parking lot. Just like when I arrived, mine was the only car there. I have no idea where the other fishermen came from or how they disappeared and to this day, I'm not entirely convinced they were actually there. https://onthewater.com/spooky-fishing-stories   Aliens prefer fishers:   Pascagoula UFO Abduction  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascagoula_Abduction   See Entry 12:  https://skepticalinquirer.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/29/2019/03/SI-MJ-12.pdf   Charles Hickson 42 Calvin Parker 19  Went fishing on the Pascagoula River Mississippi October 11th 1973     On the evening of October 11, 1973, 42-year old Charles Hickson and 19-year-old Calvin Parker went fishing on the west bank of the Pascagoula River.  As dusk fell, they heard a whirring/whizzing sound and saw flashes of blue light on the water.  They looked up to see an oval-shaped object approximately 30-40 feet across and 8-10 feet high.  Three creatures came gliding out of the craft and took them aboard.  Completely paralyzed but still conscious, the two men were subjected to a medical exam by a giant robotic eye.  They were then returned to shore, and the craft sped away into the night sky.    Both changed their stories over time.  Parker said he passed out but later claimed to remember certain details.  Hickson kept altering his story. Annabelle Hickson, editor of the award-winning independent print magazine GALAH. Despite having no publishing or business experience, Annabelle started the magazine from her kitchen table to document regional Australia and the people who live there. In the past, young people left country towns to find opportunities in the Big Smoke. But the big rural story of the past few years is where young people returned. The Covid-19 pandemic supercharged the regions in a way that surprised Australians. Nearly a third of Australians, over 7 million, now live outside the cities. The latest quarterly data shows that more people are moving out to the regions than back into cities. Capital-to-regional migration is tracking at 11.7 per cent above the pre-pandemic average. Sydney accounted for a whopping 80 per cent of all people moving from capitals to regions, up from 61 per cent in the previous 12 months. Millennials are the largest group making the move. So what is life actually like outside of the cities? Annabelle Hickson is the embodiment of the Australian tree-changer.Annabelle didn't plan to live in regional Australia, but she fell in love with a handsome farmer from western NSW and thought she'd give it a shot. She knew there'd be some sacrifices - her journalism career at The Australian, the beach and takeaway food that is still hot by the time you get home - but she had no idea how many opportunities there would be for her in this new life, too. While her husband Ed planted pecan trees, Annabelle looked after their three young children and began to learn what it was to be part of a community, all in it together. She saw smart, clever and resilient people everywhere she looked who talked about opportunities instead of limitations. This was in stark contrast to the simple-country-people stereotypes she'd bought into in the city. Annabelle wanted to read stories from regional Australia that weren't about disadvantage.  Stories that reflected her sense of luck at living out of the city. And she wanted a publication that acted as a bridge between the city and country divide. So, she made Galah the magazine. For the first time, Annabelle has collected the most loved and enduring stories from all issues of her award-winning magazine in book form - GALAH: Stories of Life Outside the City, published by Murdoch books The changing face of regional and rural Australia1. "Three legless creatures examined both men aboard their ship." UFO witnesses speak. 'The story is very true. That's what has bothered me for 45 years.' UFO witnesses speak. It's a story that has fascinated people for decades. Two Pascagoula men claim they were abducted by aliens while fishing on the Pascagoula River. As was expected by the two men — Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker — their story was often met with skepticism and ridicule.. Now, three more witnesses have come forward. All three of them say they saw some sort of flying object with a bright blue light at the same time and in the same area as Hickson and Parker. One of the witnesses says she saw what she originally thought was a man in the water but now believes was one of the aliens. Three legless creatures examined both men aboard their ship "It was Oct. 11, 1973," Parker said. "We'd gotten off work that day, and a friend of mine, he and I went fishing. "The old abandoned shipyard; they had a little pier out front and we were on that pier. I'm going to guess it was about six o'clock in the evening. It had just started getting dark, but it was kind of a bright moon." Parker said he saw blue light reflecting off the water and thought law enforcement officers had arrived to tell them to leave the property. However, when Parker looked up, he realized the light was coming from a craft like nothing he'd ever seen. "A big light came out of the clouds," Parker said. "It was a blinding light. "It was hard to tell with the lights so bright, but it looked like it was shaped like a football. I would say, just estimating, (it was) about 80-foot. (It made) very little sound. It was just a hissing noise." Parker said three legless creatures floated from the craft. One had no neck with gray wrinkled skin. Another had a neck and appeared more feminine. Parker described their hands as being shaped like mittens or crab claws. When one of the creatures put one of its claws around his arm, Parker said he was terrified, but then another feeling came over his body. "I think they injected us with something to calm us down," Parker said. "I was kind of numb and went along with the program." Parker said the creatures floated him and Hickson into the craft and performed physical examinations on the two. Then they were taken back to the bank of the river. Hickson, who died in 2011, was very public about his experience. Parker, who now lives in Moss Point, was not and spent much of his life distancing himself from the event. However, he published a book about his experience in 2018 and since, people who had been largely quiet about their experiences that night are now speaking out. Maria and Jerry Blair of Theodore, Alabama are among them. Couple across the river saw same blue light and a flying object Maria and Jerry were sitting in their 1969 Pontiac GTO in the parking lot of Graham's Seafood on the opposite side of the river. Jerry worked for the business and was waiting on a boat captain to take him offshore. The captain was late and the Blairs waited for hours. Just after dark Maria saw something strange. "I was looking at the sky and I noticed a blue light in the sky over where they were fishing," Maria said. "It started moving and it seemed like it was following along the Pascagoula River. "I just seen the lights on it. It was just going back and forth. Sometimes it would just sit there. It went on for 20 to 25 minutes." Maria said she initially thought it was a plane, but realized the flight pattern and hovering were not indicative of a plane. Jerry watched it also but didn't think much of it. "I thought it was a helicopter initially and just blew it off," Jerry said. "It landed about 150 to 200 yards from us. "I was just north of the bridge and it was just south of the bridge. I was there, but stupid me didn't pay much attention to it. I was just going offshore and thinking about other things." Woman believes she saw one of the aliens in the water After they lost sight of the craft, the two went to put Jerry's clothing and other items on the boat. While walking down the lighted pier, something else caught their attention. "We heard this loud, thumping splash in the river," Maria said. "I looked over the side of the pier, and that's when I thought I saw a person in the river. "I was looking right down on it. It looked like a person, but there was something different about it. It only came to the surface of the water. As soon as I saw it, it just went back down in the water." Whatever Maria had seen, which she thought was a person in some sort of diving gear, did not resurface. Jerry, who was walking ahead of her and didn't see it, said it must have been a dolphin. She said she is positive it wasn't a dolphin. Jerry went to work that evening and Maria returned home. In following days she heard reports of Parker and Hickson's experience. The descriptions of the aliens matched what she had seen in the water. "I thought it was a person, but now I think it was an alien," Maria said. "What Parker described was exactly it." Another woman said UFO made her radio go crazy, car to die Later that evening, Judy Branning was sitting in a car a few miles away at a traffic signal with her roommate and their dates. "We were on a double date that night," Branning said. "We were at a red light at Chicot and Highway 90, and we were basically sitting on the railroad track. I saw some lights, and I wasn't sure what I was looking at because it was so far away." Like the Blairs, Branning thought it was an airplane at first, but as it came closer and flew over the car she was in, the four realized it wasn't. "It didn't make noise," Branning said. "It had bright, bright lights. "It got closer and it was hovering. It was kind of a saucer shape or disc shape with a rounded top. The radio started sounding like it was running through all the stations and the car went dead. We were freaking out." Branning said after it passed over the car, the craft shot straight up at a rate of speed she'd never seen and disappeared. It left her shaken. "I didn't sleep that night thinking about it," Branning said. 'When I saw what Calvin and Charles went through, I kind of backed down' Branning said the four agreed not to say anything about what they saw. She said over the years she told a few people but not many because she was scared of people's reactions. Now 74 years old, she said she does not care if people believe her or not. Maria said she told people what she'd seen but largely stopped talking about it in the weeks following that evening. "When you talked about it back then, people thought you were crazy," Maria said. "Back then, when I saw what Calvin and Charles went through, I kind of backed down talking about it. "The story is very true. That's what has bothered me for 45 years. It's been on my mind for 45 years." Parker has met with the Blairs and Branning and said he's happy they are now telling their stories publicly. "I checked the people out as best I could, and they seem credible," Parker said. "It means a lot to me that that they came forward." Parker feels there are more witnesses out there. "I definitely do," Parker said. "There's been two or three people that have contacted me privately that didn't want their names used. "I believe there are more people that haven't come forward. Back in the '70s you just didn't talk about it." A Look Back: Charles Hickson talks of his abduction by a UFO in Pascagoula One of two men who claimed to have been abducted by a UFO in Pascagoula in 1973, Calvin Parker, has finally explained what he remembers about that night 45 years ago in a new book, "Pascagoula — The Closest Encounter, My Story" The other man, Charles Hickson, told Clarion Ledger columnist Billy Watkins his account of the event in great detail 16 years ago at his home on the Gulf Coast. Hickson died Sept. 9, 2011, at the age of 80. During that interview, he revealed something he had never talked about publicly. Here is Watkins' story from Oct. 20, 2002. GAUTIER — Charles Hickson has no proof. No photograph he can pull from his wallet, no papers certifying his story. Just his word that 29 years ago this month he and a fishing buddy were abducted by a UFO, examined by a machine resembling a giant eyeball, then released physically unharmed. He has told his story under hypnosis, told it to Johnny Carson on national TV. Recently, while sipping coffee in his modest home in Gautier, he told the story to a Clarion-Ledger reporter. His account of that night never changes. He has passed numerous lie-detector tests. What Hickson hasn't talked about publicly, until now, is that he believes whatever - or whoever - was on that craft has kept track of him. "I think they know where I am at all times," he says. "Too many strange things have happened." Hickson, a retired shipyard foreman with five children and a no-nonsense demeanor, is 71 and spends most of his time caring for Blanche, his wife of 48 years who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis. He is fighting health problems of his own, including clogged arteries in his neck. Hickson says he is a God-fearing man who "believes Jesus Christ died for my sins." Whether people believe his UFO story doesn't seem to be a big deal to him. "If you were in my place right now, I'm not sure I'd believe you

In this episode I am reading an extract from Philip Mantle's book ''Beyond Reasonable Doubt: The Pascagoula Alien Abduction'.The date was October 11th, 1973; the location was the Pascagoula River, Mississippi. Two shipyard workers Charles Hickson (age 42) and Calvin Parker (age 18) decided to go fishing on the river after work. Both anglers were not having much luck that night and they thought about calling it a night when something happened that would change their lives forever. A dazzling blue light from behind them illuminated the entire scene. Turning round both men watched in awe as a rugby ball-shaped object descended. A door opened and three bizarre looking humanoid entities glided out across to the two terrified onlookers. Both Parker & Hickson later that night made their way to their local Sherriff's Department to tell them that they had been abducted by aliens. It wasn't long before the story found its way into the media and the story went around the world. Charles Hickson readily told his story, but Calvin Parker wanted simply to be left alone. Hickson co-authored a book with William Mendez in 1983 and it wasn't until 2018 that Calvin Parker finally told his story in full for the first time.It was Calvin Parker's book and subsequent publicity that made this case probably the best documented such event on record. It wasn't necessarily what Calvin Parker related in his two books, but it is what happened when they were published. Much to everyone's surprise more and more firsthand eyewitnesses began to step forward. A number of these witnesses reported seeing something s few days prior to the Parker/Hickson encounter and others a few days after. UFO sightings were made in and around Pascagoula, Mississippi and in neighbouring states as well. Added to that more eyewitnesses stepped forward with their accounts of what they observed on the very same night, that being October 11th, 1973. Two of these witnesses were quite literally on the other side of the Pascagoula River that night at the very same time as Parker and Hickson were experiencing their close encounter. Not only were they on the other side of the river, but they too have related a sequence of events that could indicate that they two had a similar encounter to the two fishermen on the opposite side of the river. The full story of these two witnesses and all of the others are detailed here in full. One last thing that has left the authors completely baffled is what could be ‘proof' of a physical contact with something by Parker and Hickson that night. Both men reported that when the bizarre looking humanoids took hold of them, they felt a king of ‘scratch' on ‘prick' similar to an injection. The authors have uncovered a document written on October 13th, 1973, just two days after the encounter, which describes a physical examination of the two men and that ‘puncture wounds' were located on Charles Hickson's arm and Calvin Parker's foot. The document, located in 2018, also mentioned that photographs of these marks were taken. In the file sadly there was no sign of these photographs. In 2021 when this book was being written the authors received an email from a colleague that mentioned he had accidentally found a couple of photos that he thought we would be interested in. The photographs in question were those mentioned in the ‘puncture wounds' document obtained 3 years earlier and show marks on Charles's Hickson's arm and Calvin Parker's foot. These photos will be published here for the first time ever. This book concentrates on the independent eyewitness testimony, the puncture wounds evidence, the hypnosis sessions of the new witnesses and of Calvin Parker both of which were conducted exclusively for this book and it is left for the reader to draw their own conclusion.BioPhilip Mantle is an international UFO researcher, lecturer and broadcaster. His books have been published in six different languages around the world. He is the former Director of Investigations for the British UFO Research Association and former MUFON representative for England. Philip has written articles and features for numerous publications around the world and has been both editor and assistant editor of high street UFO publications. WITHOUT CONSENT was the first book to concentrate on accounts of alien abduction in the UK and as a result remains a classic of its kind. This unique book takes a close look at the alien abduction experience and treats it in a logical and serious manner. All aspects of the alien abduction phenomena is detailed along with a look at some of the main theories to try and explain these accounts. The book has a long list of alien abduction and missing time case histories many of which are publisher here for the very first time. But as soon as that rule changed, there was no stopping Mandy! She became only the second female to fly a Tornado GR4 on the front line, and in her career, she completed 45 missions over Iraq and three duty tours. In this episode, Mandy speaks about how difficult it is to become a fighter pilot (regardless of gender), what it was like knowing she was a test case and how she overcame that, what the military taught her about unselfish behaviour and how there is always more to be gained from working as a team, as well as what it was like juggling being a mum with a high-pressure role in the air force, and the issues this still poses for female fast jet pilots today.Since leaving the RAF, Mandy has set up her own business and travels the country speaking at schools and businesses and sharing all she's learned.
