The Truth About God's Judgment | Jonah 3:4–5

Daily Devotions From Greg Laurie

“On the day Jonah entered the city, he shouted to the crowds: ‘Forty days from now Nineveh will be destroyed!’ The people of Nineveh believed God’s message, and from the greatest to the least, they declared a fast and put on burlap to show their sorrow.” (Jonah 3:4–5 NLT) The Old Testament prophet Jonah very reluctantly went to the city of Nineveh to warn that God was going to judge its people in forty days. Jonah was reluctant because he understood God’s nature. He knew that if the Ninevites repented, God would forgive them and spare them His judgment. That’s not the outcome Jonah was rooting for. He hated the Ninevites and wanted to see them face God’s judgment. Jonah understood that he served a merciful and loving God. The fact that God was sending him to warn the Ninevites to repent instead of just judging them was evidence of His compassion and concern. Sure enough, Jonah’s worst-case scenario became a reality. The people of Nineveh repented from their sins and the king commanded his subjects to “pray earnestly to God” (Jonah 3:8 NLT). As a result, God lifted His judgment from the people of Nineveh. People in our culture today would have you believe that the God of the Bible is a vengeful deity who revels in His power to bring death and destruction on anyone who dares to disobey Him. Scripture itself paints a different picture. The God of the Bible is holy and just. Sin cannot exist in His presence. And He demands that all sin be punished. In Romans 6:23, the apostle Paul tells us that the punishment for sin is death. But the God of the Bible is also loving in a way that we cannot fully comprehend. He sent His Son to take the punishment we deserve for our sin and to die in our place. God sacrificed His Son so that anyone who believes in Him can escape judgment and have eternal life. In Ezekiel 33:11, God said, “I take no pleasure in the death of wicked people. I only want them to turn from their wicked ways so they can live” (NLT). The apostle Peter, in talking about why Jesus hasn’t returned yet, said, “The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent” (2 Peter 3:9 NLT). Everyone has sinned, so everyone deserves God’s punishment. If you receive Jesus as your Savior and Lord, you receive eternal life in Heaven with Him because your punishment has already been taken by Him. If you reject Him, you will face God’s punishment yourself—that is, eternal separation from Him. God has gone to unimaginable lengths to save you from His punishment. The next step is yours. If you confess your sins, turn away from them, and trust in Jesus, you will never have to worry about God’s judgment. Instead, you’ll discover the depths of His mercy, grace, and love. Reflection question: How would you explain God’s holiness, justice, and love to someone who knows little about Him? What if the most painful moment of your life was actually the beginning of your greatest awakening? In this episode, I sit down with Neale Donald Walsch, author of Conversations with God, to explore how losing everything — his home, his health, and his sense of self — opened the door to a direct conversation with the divine. Neale shares how his lowest moment became the beginning of something extraordinary, and how that inner dialogue has since inspired millions. We talk openly about grief and death, reframing them not as endings but transitions. Neale shares the story of his mother's passing and how it helped him see death as a homecoming, not a tragedy. If you've ever feared letting go, his message offers peace: you don't die, you just change form —and love is never lost. We also explore how to access divine guidance for yourself, the six steps to hear your own inner truth, and what happens when you live from pure love instead of fear. This episode is for anyone navigating uncertainty, seeking clarity, or simply ready to listen a little more deeply.   ===   GUEST LINKS https://nealedonaldwalsch.com https://amzn.to/3O0ud1c https://www.facebook.com/NealeDonaldWalsch   ===   Have you watched our previous episode with Aaron? Todaywe celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.. This morning, we'llreflect on seven incredible truths that reveal the depth of God's love andgrace toward us—truths that change everything TheAmazing Truth That God Loves Us – John 3:16 John 3:16 isn't just a verse; it's the heartbeat of thegospel. God loves you—personally, deeply, eternally. Before we go further, letthat sink in. The Creator of the universe loves you. That's the foundation ofHis amazing grace. TheAmazing Truth That God Became Flesh – John 1:1, 14 “In the beginning wasthe Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word becameflesh and dwelt among us.” This is the miracle of the incarnation. The eternal Goddidn't stay distant—He stepped into our world, taking on human flesh. Why? To bridge the gap between a holy God and a broken humanity. God's Amazing Grace came down to us in the person of Jesus Christ. The Amazing Truth of Jesus Christ and His Virgin Birth – Isaiah 7:14; Matthew1:18-25 Thevirgin birth isn't just a detail—it's a cornerstone of God's plan. Jesus wasn'tborn with a sinful nature like us; He was holy from the start. This set Himapart as the perfect Savior, born to be “God with us.” God's Amazing Graceentered the world through a humble manger. TheAmazing Truth of Jesus Christ and His Sinless Life – 2 Corinthians 5:21;Hebrews 4:15; 1 Peter 2:22 Jesuslived a life none of us could—a sinless life. Hebrews says He was tempted inevery way, yet without sin. Peter declares He committed no sin, nor was deceitfound in His mouth. Jesus' sinless life qualified Him to be oursubstitute. That's amazing grace—He lived the life we couldn't live. TheAmazing Truth of Jesus Christ and His Vicarious Death – 1 Peter 2:24; 1 Peter3:18; Hebrews 10:10 On the cross, Jesustook our place. The word “vicarious” means He died for us—the innocent for theguilty. Every sin we've committed, every failure, every shame—He carried itall. The cross is the ultimate display of amazing grace: Jesus paid the price we owed, so we could be forgiven and free. TheAmazing Truth of Jesus Christ and His Victorious Resurrection – Matthew 28:5-8 Eastermorning changed everything! The tomb is empty, death is defeated, and Jesus isalive! The resurrection proves that Jesus' sacrifice was accepted, that sin anddeath have no power over Him—or us. Grace doesn't end at the cross; it bursts forth in victory at the empty tomb. TheAmazing Truth of God's Holy Spirit – John 16:13-15; John 16:8-9 God's amazing gracedoesn't leave us to figure things out alone. The Spirit convicts us of our sin, showing usour need for a Savior (John 16:8). He reveals the truth about Jesus and guidesus into a life of faith. Without the Spirit's work, we'd never see our need forgrace. Even today, the Spirit is drawing us closer to God'samazing truth. ClosingThought: Thismorning many of us will observe the sun rising over the ocean or thehorizon. But here's a thought: the sun isn't really rising. It appears to be,but the truth is, the earth is turning toward it. In the same way, for us tosee the Son of God—Jesus—rising in our lives, we need to turn. The Bible callsthis repentance: turning away from our sin and turning toward God and His grace.            This Easter morning, will you turn to Christ? Will you believe His amazing truth andreceive His amazing grace? It's not about being good enough—it's about trustingin what Jesus has already done. If you've never surrendered to Him, or if youneed to recommit your life, now is the moment. Let's pray together. Prayer Heavenly Father, thank You for Your amazing grace. Thank You for loving us, for sendingJesus to live, die, and rise again for us. Thank You for Your Spirit, who opensour eyes to Your truth. Right now, we turn to You. Forgive our sins, fill uswith Your grace, and help us live for You.

Forgiveness isn't a ritual; it's a daily posture.Jesus' Parable: The $18 Billion Dollar DebtMatthew 18:23-24 (paraphrased)“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a king who called in his debts. One servant owed him 10,000 talents.”In biblical terms, 10,000 talents is about 200,000 years' worth of wages—roughly $18 billion today. Jesus was making a point: the debt was absurdly unpayable. Why so much? The man was likely a tax farmer—someone who paid the empire upfront and then overcharged the people to make his profit. Corruption was baked into the job.Matthew 18:25-27“Since he couldn't pay, the master ordered he and his family be sold. The man begged for mercy. The master had compassion and forgave the debt completely.”The Greek word used here for compassion—splagchnistheis—refers to deep, gut-level mercy. This is the same word used for Jesus in Matthew 9:36 when he looked at the lost crowds and felt moved to act.The Twist: The Man Who Couldn't Forgive $30,000Matthew...

In this episode, we explore the profound ways God demonstrates His love for us, beyond the everyday gestures of kindness we often notice. While social media is filled with stories of grace—like a child giving a stranger a hug or the beauty of nature—these are just glimpses of God's common grace. The Bible tells us that God's love is ultimately and most powerfully shown through one specific way: the sending of His Son, Jesus Christ. We dive deep into the Scriptures to uncover the truth that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. This is the true manifestation of God's love, and it's the foundation of our reconciliation with Him. Without understanding this, we risk missing the full scope of God's love. Join us as we discover how Jesus sacrifice is the ultimate expression of God's love for humanity. There is a huge difference in the way God operates and the way mankind operates. Unlike us, He thinks and works on a much higher level than we are capable of. God blesses us not because we are good, but because He is good; the grace He shows us is not based on what we do, but because of what He has done through Jesus Christ. By contrast, man's ways focus on the mindset that says whatever happens, good or bad, is the result of his own conduct; natural man therefore thinks that he must contribute something to earn God's favor. Our faith is critical here; if we doubt that Jesus forgave us of our sins when He went to the cross, then we will not believe that His plans for our future are good. God punished Jesus for our sins, and therefore does not punish us. Believing this gives us a peaceful conscience.
