Penal denizens Ben and Tao lower their visors and enter the airlock, ready to race against time and depleting oxygen, evade security cameras, turrets and warbots, and massacre all manner of space monsters in the droll and aptly titled looter-shooter, Void Bastards. Issues discussed include Roguelike game lengths and replayability; procedural generation, randomness and its impact on decision making; comedy in games versus TV or film; and if Void Bastards would work as a tabletop board game. No story spoilers.Content Warning: PEGI 13. The yobbish space monsters are full on Sweary McSwearface, but your hosts are fairly restrained this ep. You’re welcome.Clarifications:The original music for Void Bastards was composed by Ryan Roth. The developers are Blue Manchu. It was originally released on May 28, 2019.Ben annoyingly conflates two separate (but very similar!) space comedies, each released in 2020. One is Armando Iannuci’s Avenue 5 starring Hugh Laurie: The other, whose audio is featured, is Space Force, a series created by Greg Daniels and Steve Carell for Netflix. Are we allowed to say "bastards" on this show? It's probably okay if it's in the title, right? What do you get when you mix a science-fiction first-person shooter with a roguelike? Yes, you read that correctly. This title developed by Blue Manchu and published by Humble Bundle is a fusion of two genres that don't sound like they pair well together. That said, the one rule of this show is that we must complete an hour of gameplay before pronouncing judgment. Will this pairing be more like french fries and ice cream or more like chocolate and ketchup? Let's find out together! What do you think? Let us know! Decimos gracias, Jk_eye, Travol y RodoR

This week was Andrew's pick. Void Bastards By; Blue Manchu. Can you survive the nebula in this first person rogue-like?
On this weeks episode I interview Dean Walshe from Blue Manchu about the newly released title Void Bastards. Inspired by BioShock and System Shock 2, Void Bastards is a revolutionary new strategy-shooter that will test your wits as well as exercise your aim. Forget everything you know about first-person shooters: Void Bastards asks you to take charge, not just point your gun and fire. Your task is to lead the rag-tag Void Bastards out of the Sargasso Nebula. You make the decisions: where to go, what to do and who to fight. And then you must carry out that strategy in the face of strange and terrible enemies. Dean Walshe is the 3D Art Lead at Canberra's Blue Manchu and they've just released their comic styled rogue-lite shooter Void Bastards. Looking like the science fiction comic worlds of the 2000AD comics, Void Bastards is a game built by System Shock and Bioshock designers, where every death is a lesson and a progression. Dean shared what it was like to build a game that even after years of working on it was still a blast for him to play. Void Bastards is available now on PC and Xbox One. Well it was dropped into the world with much fanfare, the tiny yellow handheld called Play Date by software developer and publisher Panic made a big splash. Featuring an unconventional design, it got people equally excited and confused, but not without first causing a bit of controversy with a naming clash for an event featuring marginalised creators. Is the Play Date a gimmick, or has it changed the game? Pixel Sift is produced by Scott Quigg, Sarah Ireland, Fiona Bartholomaeus & Mitch Loh. Gianni Di Giovanni is our Executive Producer. Me and the Imperfectionists go to All-American Ale Works and sample their 6 year-round beers (they refer to it as their founding fathers). This week I talk to Ben Lee of Blue Manchu games. You may remember in episode 63 I spoke to Jon Chey the owner of Blue Manchu, well Ben works there as an art director. Blue Manchu is most renowned for its free to download and play video game called Card Hunter, a dungeon exploring game with lots of interesting twists and takes on. One such idea is that you are not just playing the game, you are playing someone who is playing the game, and it is a tongue in cheek hark back to all the positive recollections of D&D. It was interesting hearing more about Card Hunter but also more about the role of art direction and what this entails, especially in a smaller company. It was also fun to hear about Ben’s journey about working at a GW store, for Disney, and also on the Wren and Stimpy cartoon which I used to love back in the day. A great guest and some really cool insight, I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did! PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/paintalltheminis
Guest Jonathan Chey Jonathan Chey (@Manb0t) | Twitter This week I talk to Jonathan Chey of Blue Manchu. This episode is a little bit off the beaten track but there are loads of cross overs into tabletop/painting world. Jonathan’s company creates video games, and I have bumped into his work many times in the past without knowing but recently when I was thinking about good guests for the show I went to a game I have played for a long time called Card Hunter, which is effectively a dungeon crawler card game but in a video game format, but more of that in the show. Blue Manchu is a group of games developers who create video games, and some games that Jon has been involved with personally in a very integral role have been: Bio Shock, SWAT 4, Freedom force vs 3 reich, system shock 2, wall street tycoon, The Thief franchise (One I particularly love), and many more. As I said this is a bit of a change of tack but there are lots of crossovers into modelling, and remember you cant be playing or be at your hobby desk all the time so when you arent then I encourage you to check out Card Hunter because it is really fun, & free to play. Chris chats to Jon Chey, Looking Glass and Irrational Games alumni who now heads up Blue Manchu a developer based in Sydney, Australia. They have made Card Hunter, a turn based strategy RPG with card mechanics thrown in for good measure. This browser game that runs in Flash of all things has taken the world by storm thanks to its fun and humorous presentation. Chris and John chat about everything from the delights of Threes to the intricacies of free to play games and how to ethically fund them. So if you want to know about an amazing browser based game that really is not at all like Farmville then tune in, sit back and have a listen. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/sausage/TSF_Episode12.mp3 The Sausage Factory 12 was edited by Chris O'Regan
Jon Chey, formerly of Irrational and now of Blue Manchu, joins Julian and Rob to discuss Card Hunter.
Brian Tyler and Jonathan Miley I speak with Joe McDonagh, the writer of a new role-playing/card-collecting mash-up from Blue Manchu, called Card Hunter. They discuss storytelling and writing in video games, as well as the differences in working with a large video game developer versus a smaller one.
