This week, Nigel and Tazziii live, die, and repeat once more for a dive deep into All You Need Is Kill (from 25:06), with Comic Creator and WIP Comics Member Lara Callaghan. We compare this new anime adaptation to earlier versions (including Edge of Tomorrow) and explore whether it brings anything new to the table. From there, we dig into the film's distinctive visuals and its more internal, character-led perspective, looking closely at the arcs, relationships, and themes that come up across its many loops. This week's storytelling tip is about third-act constriction: how narrowing a protagonist's options, space, and agency can intensify tension and force decisive character choices.Other stories we're enjoying include: Zerocalcare (Books), The Serpent and the Wings of Night (Book), Interview with the Vampire (Netflix), Love Through a Prism (Netflix), The Art of Sarah (Netflix), My Demon (Netflix), Cannon Busters (Netflix), Invincible (Amazon Prime), Yumi and the Nightmare Painter (Book), Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 (Disney+).Connect with Lara online:Website: https://wipcomics.co.ukinQ! “You don't have the cards!” This week we deep dive the cyberpunk productivity app roguelike deckbuilder hybrid that our very own co-host Will has been developing since 2018! A unique spin on gamification apps, Hard Reset asks the ever-important question of: “what if we made the game part actually fun?” The capitalist oligarchs have taken over and you must stop them by upgrading your cybernetics as provided by a mysterious benefactor. Fight through mutant-filled cyber slums with the help of rocket arms, irradiation blasters, and a helpful hand or two. But don't skimp on those tasks to practice your cello or take out the garbage! Being consistent rewards gameplay with bonuses, and missing days will add consequences to your deck. Emperor guide thy aim! Roguelikes and -lites span a spectrum, especially when they come as added game modes to big budget titles that aren't roguey themselves. This week we explore Warhammer 40K Darktide: the action RPG featuring two … sort of … rogue-ish (heavy squinting) game modes: Expeditions and the Mortis Trials. From the moment I understood the weakness of game genre definitions, they disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of roguelikes. I aspired to the purity of the blessed permadeath. Your kind cling to your save files, as if they will not decay and fail you. One day the crude biomass that you call a gameplay loop will wither, and you will beg my kind to save you. But I am already saved, for roguelikes are immortal. Even in death I serve the GROGnissiah. Was davon schockiert heute eher, was funktioniert noch und wo grinst man vielleicht doch heimlich? Play forever! It's time to climb one of the most ambitious game releases in recent memory by dusting off UFO 50: the collection of games from the fictional LX Systems console of the 1980s. Will we be able to squash the eggs before they hatch? How many times will our hot pink spacecraft be graffito-tagged while hunting for precious treasure? (Hacker voice) I'm in. We're pentesting the mainfraime this week with 868-HACK! A small-scope puzzle-y rogue-y game by one Michael Brough: multi award-nominated IGF game designer of other similarly overlooked titles like Imbroglio, Cinco Paus, and Zaga-33. Cozy Game has caught fire and blindsided both Adkins and Apps. Where does Pokémon Pokopia rank in the Cozy Game list and does it have potential to be one of the best Pokémon games in the franchise?Paper loves an obscure indie game and nothing says obscure indie game more than Coffee Talk. Set in a fantasy version of Seattle, Coffee Talk lets you take the role of a barista as they listen to laundry list of problems the shops various customers have. With a vast range of colourful characters and problems to try and solve, does Coffee Talk hit the heights of some of Paper's favourite obscure Indie Games? With Saros just around the corner it was time for Apps to dive into Returnal. Housemarque's attempt to transition their tight combat into a Third Person Perspective was met to critical acclaim. Returnal's brutal Roguelite (or is it a Roguelike?) mechanics certainly filtered people but did their commitment to their vision ultimately hurt the game overall?Hall's traditional return to the podcast is for our rebranded Game of the Year chat, now called, Gaming's Best. Who is this mysterious Architect who sits atop the new Spire with a bunch of deflated hearts and bronze automotons?? Finally it arrives! We also finally welcome a new theme for the podcast after 4 years! Today on the 5: Roguelites are a genre of video game that I have not historically had much interest in. I've tried a few, and whiler I see the appeal of the games, none have really connected with me. That might change in a big way when Carmageddon: Rogue Shift comes out!

Join our descent into terror as we encounter vegetable hating butchers, skeleton kings, multiplayer friends running ahead and leaving us behind, sultry winged demons, poorly-aged game mechanics, and many more devlish delights! O Glorious Shekhinah! To conclude our two-part special on Caves of Qud, we turn our focus from the epic storyline to the deep gameplay mechanics and systems from the Salt Dunes of the west to the Deep Jungle in the east. Join us for a water ritual on how to negotiate with camel merchants before we clone them, managing our reputation with fuedal fungal lords, and how to navigate the differences between mutated humans, psychic warriors, and just straight-up cyborgs. We dive into Megabonk, a surprise Steam indie hit that's taken Twitch and the charts by storm. With 82K+ CCU, $2M in its first two weeks, and streamer hype driving growth, the trio explores what makes Megabonk work and whether it could scale to mobile.Key insights:Roguelite 3D blend of Vampire Survivors and Risk of Rain 2.Deeper systems: map objectives, shrines, infinite inventory, banish/skip mechanics.Core humor: banana-rang weapon, Mega Chad character, quirky item design.“Screwed-up moment” for roguelites - moving past 2D isometric clones.Shroud and other top Twitch streamers boosted it to 114K peak viewers.Viral builds (level 500+ with full-screen bananas, nukes, shrines) = highly watchable.Game thrives because it's fun to watch as well as play.Day 11: ~300K units sold, $2M revenue (discounted launch price €8.28).Vampire Survivors never reached this CCU peak despite 23M lifetime units.Risk of Rain 2 = 141M gross but publisher-backed. Megabonk is solo-dev mystery.Obvious rewarded ad placements (refresh button, rerolls, revive).Gacha for gear/characters could add whale-driven revenue.Estimates: ~$270K/month ad revenue if ported straight to F2P. With gacha: far higher.Sustaining Twitch attention requires updates or new systems.Still, design depth is strong - the “systems combination” is what competitors will copy.Takeaway: Megabonk is the new roguelite phenomenon: deep systems, streamer fuel, and endless monetization potential if (when) it comes to mobile.Get our MERCH NOW: 25gamers.com/shop--------------------------------------PVX Partners offers non-dilutive funding for game developers.Go to: https://pvxpartners.com/They can help you access the most effective form of growth capital once you have the metrics to back it.- Scale fast- Keep your shares- Drawdown only as needed- Have PvX take downside risk alongside you+ Work with a team entirely made up of ex-gaming operators and investors---------------------------------------For an ever-growing number of game developers, this means that now is the perfect time to invest in monetizing direct-to-consumer at scale. Our sponsor FastSpring:Has delivered D2C at scale for over 20 yearsThey power top mobile publishers around the worldLaunch a new webstore, replace an existing D2C vendor, or add a redundant D2C vendor at fastspring.gg.---------------------------------------This is no BS gaming podcast 2.5 gamers session. Featuring: Ammosart, Ashgar, Belghast, Kodra, Tamrielo, and Thalen We are down a Grace this week, but carry forward with a handful of topics. Bel talks about Diablo IV Season 10 after having sat out for a few seasons. The game is in a pretty good state now. Bel also goes on a tirade about how much he dislikes the builder/spender architecture in ARPGs and how you usually evolve your build to NEVER hit the builder. Tam, Kodra, and Ash offer their own rebuttals. From there, we spend most of the show talking about Hades 2, which has been released this week into its full 1.0 version with some significant changes. We wrap the last few minutes of the show talking about a few other roguelikes that released recently, namely Wander Stars and Aethermancer. Topics Discussed Diablo IV In A Good Place Builder Spender Feels Bad Hades 2 Full Release Wander Stars Full Release Aethermancer Full Release
