Tom and Chris are college buddies and life-long gamers. Unfortunately, responsibilities of middle-age life are hindering their opportunities to try many of the great games out there! With the help of Xbox Game Pass and its "Surprise Me" button, they play just 60 minutes of a random game and decide if they will keep at it or trash it.
Seems like a good age for doom. Was this first person shooter chosen randomly by the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" Button? Hell No! But it was developed by id Software, who debuted the once infamous but now just famous franchise way back in 1993. For those of you who weren't alive way back then, something about those pixelated demons and the sprite-based violence unsettled adults of the time, but we kids sure loved it. It's safe to say that video games have come a long way in the last three decades, so it will be interesting to see if this latest entry can capture the magic of those early years while still delivering something fresh and exciting. Giving the doomguy a shield seems like it will help shake it up, but how far can you bend core game mechanics before they break? Well, Tom and Chris have each invested an hour in Hell and subsequently emerged to tell their tales... let's learn if you should dive in to this pit or just keep on scrolling. What do you think? Night begins... at least historically. The Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button is regularly employed to choose the next game our hosts must play. It is fitting that the interactive fiction title chosen for this episode will make Tom and Chris make a number of their own choices, leading each of them to potentially unique experiences. Developed by London-based Interior Night, this is currently their only published work, but fear not, these developers have plenty of experience elsewhere with interactive fiction. Will they be able to leverage their prior body of work to craft a compelling indie experience? The studio's aim is make rich narrative games accessible to everyone, especially those who don't already know the joy of playing video games. Will they succeed in that quest? Will our hosts emerge from the mandated hour ready to recommend this to their whole family? Join Tom and Chris as they sit down and discuss if this dusk leads to a new dawn. What do you think? Zero to hero in no time flat.We return now to the tried and true Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button and the result is this third-person action adventure title developed by Ubisoft Quebec. Published by Ubisoft and developed using their proprietary Ubisoft Anvil engine, this game was released on just about every platform imaginable. From the same team that brought us Assassin's Creed Odyssey, this foray is decidedly more fantastical, diving head first into the myths and legends of those ancient times. Will mixing the standard Ubisoft formula with a more colorful animated presentation lead to an engaging experience? Or will fatigue with open-world collect-a-thons serve as its death sentence? A strong contrast of light and dark.Move over Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button, we have a guest with a request! For this episode, our duo is joined by the one, the only, Stormageddon! Just to be clear, we are talking about the person, not the poorly-rated 2015 disaster movie. Moving along, our illustrious guest has chosen the turn-based RPG developed by Sandfall Interactive and published by Kepler Interactive as the subject of this episode. Tom was completely unfamiliar with it, but apparently it was already on the radar for Chris, so it was an easy thing to accommodate. With the game chosen, our trio has embarked on an expedition of their own. Their mission: spend an hour to learn if this anticipated title is worthy of your time! How many aliens fit in a wristwatch? The purpose of using the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button in game selection is to ensure that our hosts play games that they would never normally experience. The third person action adventure title developed by PHL Collective and published by Outright Games that was chosen for this episode is a perfect presentation of that purpose. Chris and Tom were too old to be the target audience for the original show when it debuted in 2005 and they've only gotten older since! Chris has some kids now, so perhaps he has some tangential knowledge, but otherwise our hosts are going in completely blind. Will this brand-blindness be a blessing? Will this second game based on the 2016 reboot of the franchise prove compelling enough to keep them playing after the mandated hour is complete? It only took 25 years to get it localized!Developed by Xeen and published by Square Enix, this third-person action RPG remake of the third entry in the Mana series is the first time that story is officially available for Western audiences. Despite his well-established love of nineties RPGs, Tom never got around to playing the famous SNES installment of the franchise. Three decades later, he will discover if he should have given this lauded franchise a fair shake way back when... or at least at some point during the intervening years! Will Mana live up to the hype? What about Chris? How will he rank this title against the hundreds he has played for this show? With six different heroes to chose from, which one did each of our hosts select? Made with real British nuclear radiation! While it may be common to see games based on historical events, those events are usually surrounding some manner of military conflict. Not so for this alternate history action-survival game developed and published by Rebellion Developments which follows the fallout of the 1957 Windscale fire. When the government moves in and quarantines the facility and the surrounding area, eyebrows start getting raised. Five years after the fire, our amnesia-afflicted protagonist enters the fray and must discover what is going down behind those walls. Will our hosts learn some things about British history in the process of playing? Indubitably! Will the mystery make for a compelling story and keep them playing after the hour? Up in the sky! Look! It's a bird!No planes or supermen here, just your character riding a bird on a journey to discover and document lots of strange fantastical creatures in this third person adventure title developed by Hollow Ponds and published by Annapurna Interactive. The Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button must want our hosts to see the forests and the trees in this game that places exploration and discovery at the forefront of the experience. Will finding weird critters and solving multiple choice quizzes amount to a fun and compelling game loop? Tom and Chris have approached this with open minds and ask you to do the same as you give this episode a listen and learn about their hour with this artsy affair. These wars advanced to groovy! The Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button has taken a turn toward strategy with its selection for this episode. Developed and published by Chucklefish, this sequel to the turn-based tactics title seems set for success. Will the developers leverage what they learned working on the original to deliver a refined experience or will they take bold risks instead? Tom seemed nervous that controls would be an issue on the console, but Chris countered that there's a whole turn-based tactical franchise on Nintendo handhelds with far fewer buttons, so perhaps that fear is unwarranted. Our hosts have now played for an hour, so let's find out if this sequel sizes up to those classics and (more importantly) if it's worth your time! What do you think? These yokai better watch out! After a brief sojourn, the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button is back in control of game selection. For this episode, it has chosen the first-person action title developed by Tango Gameworks and published by Bethesda Softworks. Following in the wake of their Evil Within franchise, the developers have hung on to some elements of horror, but also diverged from their usual mechanics to craft a more action-heavy experience. Will these elements find the right balance, or will they be locked in a struggle for control just like the game's dual protagonists? It was nearly called Joker Poker.Chris wants to play a roguelike? For you longtime listeners, I'm sure that sounds borderline inconceivable, but here we are with his thumb on the scale, pushing our duo to investigate the deck-builder developed by LocalThunk and published by Playstack. Available everywhere and now included with Xbox Game Pass, this indie title was crafted by a single anonymous developer and has been nominated for spades of awards. Critics and players alike are saying it's a modern classic and that has set expectations high for our hosts. Will Chris be proven right to cash in on the hype or will this be a major bust? Follow, follow, follow the road to the Enclave.Sometimes our hosts get lucky and the "Surprise Me" button picks something they wanted to investigate anyway. Such is the case for this fresh third person action-adventure title developed and published as the debut entry from Yellow Brick Games. With core designers formerly from Ubisoft Quebec and critically-acclaimed classics cited as inspiration, their crew has set a high bar for success. After years of development, this title was recently released and is ready for review. With just one hour on the clock to make a lasting impression, will this weaver's spell flourish or fizzle? It's been a little while since we had a guest on this program and we are excited to have Dave from Tales from the Backlog join our usual duo to investigate the new action role-playing game developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Xbox Game Studios. Mixing magic and melee sits at the heart of this title about an empire's envoy tasked with investigating a mind-altering plague. Resist... your urge to run and gun!In 1992, two brothers started a company called Rebellion. Three decades later, their studio has come a long way from those humble beginnings. The most successful of their products is certainly the shooter franchise where players sneak around and one-shot their enemies from incredible distances. It seems fitting that the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button has stealthily selected the freshest entry in that famed franchise as the subject of this episode. With lots of opportunities to nail down their core mechanics, will this game deliver on decades of optimization or has franchise fatigue resulted in a sub-par experience? Tom and Chris have spent a precious hour of their lives behind enemy lines and now it's time to report back on their reconnaissance. Let's learn if this one's worth your time! What do you think? What's this? Another planet in peril? It's starting to feel like the "Surprise Me" button may have an agenda as it puts our players on another alien planet in peril. In this action-adventure title by Inverge Studios, the world is suffering from an unstoppable infection, and the player is tasked with saving as many animals as possible before the end arrives. It sounds a bit like a futuristic Noah's Ark, where the gameplay elements focus on taming the local fauna to access new areas, expanding the number of new critters available to befriend. With just one hour to make a decision, have the game designers given our hosts a proper taste of the full experience? Will the taming and creature-controlling mechanics be fun to use or will poor execution mark this one for the trash heap? Join Tom and Chris as they share their thoughts and their final decisions! It sounds gross 'cause it is gross. The Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button has put Tom and Chris on sanitation duty! For this episode, our hosts get to work cleaning up an alien world in the action-adventure title brought to you by Thunderful Development. The titular gunk looks like a certain alien symbiote, but this relationship is certainly more toxic for the host. Save the universe, at least metaphorically. The Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button has certainly surprised us with this indie puzzle adventure game developed by Feral Cat Den and published by Fellow Traveller Games. Taking inspiration from both noir-style detective stories and established scientific theories, this dialogue-free title challenges players to solve puzzles in order to prevent the murder of the protagonist's love interest. It's certainly a unique experience and we are interested to discover what our hosts took away from their first hour of play. Will it be the first of many more to come, or will this giant metaphor be so obtuse that they walk away bewildered? Only time will tell! What do you think? Let us know! These beasts are wild, how about their hearts? From the minds of Omega Force, the developers that brought you hordes of Dynasty Warriors, comes this decidedly different animal. In this action RPG, players must hunt one very nasty beast at a time instead of battling the typical tons of minions. To differentiate itself from others in the genre, this title includes a Katakuri mechanic, where players build mechanisms to help them traverse the environment and take down their powerful prey. Will a strong combat pedigree and layered mechanics allow this game to carve out a space for itself amongst the heavy hitters in the monster hunting genre? Tom and Chris will each dedicate an hour to see how it measures up and report back if it's worth your time! What do you think? Let us know! Which way will these tides turn? At the behest of the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button, our hosts engage with an isometric turn-based RPG developed by inXile Entertainment and published by Techland Publishing. Set in the universe of the tabletop RPG Numenera, this title may not be a licensed sequel to the beloved Planescape: Torment, but it shares a lot of that DNA, right down to the people involved in its manufacture. That clout saw it fully funded on Kickstarter very quickly and likely plays a role in its strong aggregate reviews. Putting all that aside, what will Tom and Chris make of this game? Like the protagonist, they approach this as a blank slate, ready to be molded by the fresh experience. Will the first hour leave them eager for more or ready forget the whole endeavor? Chosen for this episode is the third entry in the double-adjective sports series developed and published by Metalhead Software. It goes to infinity, but not beyond. For this episode, the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button has chosen the open-world farming game developed by the small Swedish studio called FRAME BREAK. What's unique about this resource harvesting title is that the player is doing the typical exploring and crafting from inside a mech. There's also a narrative component centered on a mystery that needs solving and players have the option of experiencing the whole thing online with up to three friends. Vacation's all she ever wanted! If you work a desk job, perhaps fighting monsters could be considered a vacation from your day-to-day life. The folks over at Microbird Studios take this premise quite literally with their 3rd-Person Action RPG centered around a young clerk looking to escape the monotony of her daily life by venturing to an Alpine town where magic and monsters are real. Tom and Chris have been tasked with joining this intrepid adventure-seeker on her vacation and reporting back on the resulting first hour of gameplay. All we want for Christmas is a whip... and a fedora. Proving they aren't a couple of scrooges, Tom and Chris have given the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button some time off for the holiday! In keeping with that same holiday spirit, they have elected to give each other the gift of playing the latest first-person action-adventure title from MachineGames. Featuring everyone's favorite archeologist and set between the second and third films, it certainly sounds like something they will both enjoy. That said, Indy's recent film outings have been divisive and his video-game track record is certainly spotty as well. Wake up! Do androids need to wear make-up? Is it accurate to call a visual novel a game? What if it incorporates dice rolls and character advancement? The Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button asks our hosts to ponder these questions with its selection for this episode. Crafted by the London-based one-person development studio Jump Over the Age and published by Fellow Traveller, this title is listed as a role-playing game. As usual, Tom and Chris have an hour to decide if that's an accurate assessment. Over the course of that hour, they must also determine if the experience is fun and worthy of at least an hour of your own time. Will theirs be an hour well spent, or will they encourage you to keep sleeping on this highly praised title? More lucrative than flipping burgers! The Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button has decided to wind things down with this renovation simulation developed by Empyrean and published by Frozen District and PlayWay. What this means in practice is that our hosts have been tasked with cleaning and fixing homes. Don't worry, they won't be breaking a sweat or pulling any muscles in this exercise, because all the mandated hard labor is purely virtual. We've seen a number of jobs masquerading as games in our many episodes, so Tom and Chris are curious if this one will fall into that unfortunate category or prove itself satisfying and (more importantly) fun to play. You can call this one a remake! Back in 1999, Capcom released their third Biohazard title. This episode is about the remake of that survival horror game, which was likewise developed by Capcom. With over twenty years and countless franchise entries separating the two, it is clear the actual development teams were comprised of different individuals. This leaves long-time fans to wonder: which team did it best? Updating Resident Evil for the modern action-favoring audience is sure to disappoint some purists, but will the graphical overhaul and tighter story prove a worthwhile trade? Putting the car in carnage! On this episode, Tom and Chris are off to the races. But it seems dishonest to call this a racing game, as racing is only one facet of the gameplay of this title developed by Bugbear Entertainment. As the name suggests, wrecking the opposition plays a major role in every game mode, and that is sure to set this game apart from your average racer. The developers call this the spiritual successor to their FlatOut series and inquiring minds surely want to know if it lives up to that pedigree. The "Surprise Me" button has spoken and our hosts have been dispatched to discover the answer. Join them as they white-knuckle their way to the finish line, dodging opponents aiming to turn their rides into scrap, and learn if you should join them after the checkered flag is waved. Doing a big number two for episode two hundred! Our show has arrived at episode 200, can you believe it? It seems fitting that the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button has chosen the dangerously humorous turn-based RPG from the minds of another dynamic duo for this episode. Made manifest by Ubisoft San Francisco after the fall of THQ, this game navigated a series of development hurdles before arriving on consoles nearly a year after its intended release date. Considering that Tom completed The Stick of Truth way back when it first launched, it's quite surprising that he never got around to playing its sequel. This leaves us wondering, was the delayed launch worth it? And does Tom's significantly longer wait spell disaster for this sequel? How will it play out for Chris, who presumably has much more reasonable expectations? Join your two favorite hosts as they celebrate making two hundred episodes by navigating the perilous cancellation minefield that comes along with discussing South Park! What do you think? How long do piñatas live? The Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button has decided on another classic and our hosts are honor-bound to see it through... or at least play it for an hour. For this episode, they are tasked with maintaining a garden full of colorful creatures in the life sim developed by Rare and published by Microsoft Game Studios. This game launched alongside an animated series and resulted in a few sequels, so it must have some merit. That said, keep in mind that it was released nearly two decades ago. Did it age gracefully, or has all the candy inside gone bad? As usual, our hosts have played an hour and come to their decision. Will this oldie be a goodie? Join Tom and Chris as they take a swing and crack this game wide open, exposing all the tasty tidbits contained inside! What do you think? Let us know! It was crafted by a team of ninja. There are a number of classic titles included in the Xbox Game Pass library and the "Surprise Me" button has seen fit to call upon one of those classics for this episode. Developed by Team Ninja and published by Tecmo Koei way back in 2009, this action-adventure game was originally a PS3 port of Xbox 360's Ninja Gaiden 2. While Tom is quite familiar with the game from his ancient GameStop days, it's pretty impressive that he never got around to playing it. We suppose that's fortunate because that lack of prior play left it on the table as a candidate to review for this show! Will it be worth the wait or will he learn that the years have been rather unkind? Join Tom as he connects with his cohost with the most Chris to kick open this crate and devour the nuggets of wisdom within! What do you think? Let us know! Recruiting all extreme event enthusiasts! Developed by Ubisoft Annecy, the same folks that brought us Steep, comes this Massively Multiplayer Online Extreme Sports title. Weaving together seven national parks into one seamless world that can be traversed and explored using all manner of extreme sports gear, these developers have crafted quite the sandbox. The Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button has now put it on our radar and it's time for our hosts to gear up and take it for a spin. Will the standard hour be enough to scratch the surface of this content-rich title? Will the mechanics of extreme sports games and open world games combine into a beautiful spectacle, or will it fumble and fall over the handlebars and onto its face? Would you believe the title is even longer in Japanese? Developed by MONKEYCRAFT Co Ltd and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc, the remaster of the second title in the quirky puzzle franchise is the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button's selection for this episode. Tom played some of the original game way back when the Playstations were only two in number, but now he will finally try (an admittedly modernized version of) the sequel. Has a lot changed in the domain of rolling a sticky ball over countless objects in the last few decades? Has the presentation and the story become even weirder? Join Tom and his partner in collections crime Chris as they roll through various environments and discover who has the bigger balls... of stuff. More importantly, will this action puzzler be comprised of elements that make it deserving of your valuable time or will it be a real ball of junk? Let's roll up our sleeves and sort out their final decision! What do you think? Let us know! This drink makes you see ghosts, no big deal. Once again at the mercy of the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button, our hosts have been tasked with playing the life-sim management game by solo developer Cheesemaster Games. Conceived by Dan Beckerton and brought to life through the help of a successful Kickstarter campaign, this pixel-art title sees the protagonist move to the country and get roped into running a bath house for forgotten spirits. The premise definitely feels like it would fit nicely in a Studio Ghibli film and the developer acknowledges drawing inspiration from classic spirit-focused anime and manga. Will the game prove as timeless as those stories? With just one hour to make a decision, will it captivate our hosts and encourage them to keep playing when the mandated time is up? It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. The Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button has selected the sand-packed action RPG from the Germans over at Deck13 Interactive GmbH. The subtitle makes you think it's a sequel, but it's actually a major free update inspired by player feedback from the initial launch. Neither Tom nor Chris played the game in its original incarnation, so they are blissfully free of bias and able to give this iteration a fair shake. Will this revamped package make for an entertaining experience that leaves our hosts itching to keep playing after the hour is up, or will they be itching for a shower to wash away all that sand and their memories along with it? As usual, they have each played an hour and now are sitting down to share their thoughts. Let's dig in and unearth their final decision! What do you think? Let us know! Domo arigato, sushi roboto. Here's another weird one courtesy of the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button! From the minds of the two-brother team that is Catch & Release LLC comes a sushi restaurant (and encompassing town) simulator. You play as a sushi-making robot with aspirations of becoming a famous chef, but when you are saddled with a restaurant in a sleepy town, it becomes clear that you have your work cut out for you. As the title implies, you will need to make a lot of sushi and you will need to make a lot of friends if you want your business to succeed. Tom and Chris have had a mixed bag of experiences with the simulation genre, so it is anyone's guess where this colorful restaurant manager will fall on that spectrum. As usual, just one hour of gameplay is all they get before they must make their utensils-down final decision, let's hope they make it count! What do you think? Let us know! Put your sleuthing skills to the test! The advantage of using the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button to select the games for this podcast is that our hosts are exposed to many titles they might have otherwise overlooked. Case in point, this point-and-click mystery where the player must investigate scenes for clues and words to correctly fill in the blanks on a key phrase that summarizes an important moment in the plot. Developed by a pair of Latvian brothers as the debut title for their studio Color Gray Games, the objective for this title was to create a detective game set in the 18th century that utilized an art style reminiscent of 1990's point-and-click adventure games. Were they successful in capturing the nostalgia of those classic titles? Is a quirky mystery game with a major emphasis on deductive reasoning worth your time? Lucky for you, Tom and Chris have done the research and are ready to share their reports! What do you think? Let us know! Medieval manuscript meets mindful melee. The Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button has spoken and its selection for this episode is an unusual one. From a small Polish studio dubbed Yaza Games comes a turn-based strategy game ripped from the literal pages of medieval manuscripts. Proving that our ancestors enjoyed memes as much as we do, this game has all manner of armed animals and lowbrow humor. With an animation direction that is decidedly Monty Pythonesque, this title seems well poised to capture the attention of our hosts. With that said, the most important question is whether it will be able to maintain their interest for the mandated hour and ultimately leave them wanting more! Well that time is up and now Tom and Chris must decide if this game was worth their hour and (more importantly) worthy of yours! What do you think? Let us know! N.Sane in the Neo Cortex! For this episode, our duo tackles a collection of remasters of the first three entries in the famous platformer series originally developed by Naughty Dog. Revitalized by Vicarious Visions and now available on Xbox Game Pass, it is finally time for our hosts to take them for a spin. Tom is a fan of both developers and Chris even interned at Vicarious Visions, so it seems both of them will be challenged to fight back some personal bias with this one. On the other hand, Tom was raised as a Nintendo kid and carries an unresolved grudge against the titular marsupial, so perhaps that will balance out. Will he discover what all those Sony kids were raving about? Will he finally be able to put aside his differences like he did with a certain blue hedgehog? Let's find out if Chris has the power to mediate and simultaneous determine if this orange bandicoot is worth your time! What do you think? Let us know! Swing, swing from the tangles of your yarn body. Our hosts travel back in time to 2016 to experience the puzzle platformer crafted by the Swedish developer Coldwood Interactive and published by Electronic Arts. Both Tom and Chris have played their fair share of puzzle games, and both have extensive experience with platformers, but this title managed to slip past them. The Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button has been alerted to this oversight and has taken the necessary steps to correct it posthaste! Has the game aged well in the intervening time? Does anyone still craft things with physical materials in this increasingly digital age? Tom and Chris have some thoughts on the matter and it's time for you to hear them! What do you think? It's vivid and you float like a noble gas. The Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button has foisted another curious title upon our hosts. For this episode, they have been tasked with investigating the first-person shooter-platformer developed by Angel Matrix and published by Annapurna Interactive. In this game focused on spreedrunning, the player takes on the role of the titular protagonist and must utilize powers granted by cards to quickly traverse each level, destroying demons on their way to the exit. With primary objectives based on precision and bonus objectives based on speed, will Tom and Chris be able to walk (or rather run) the line to success? With just the standard hour to decide whether or not to keep playing, this is one title where you can really feel that clock ticking. Will that be a like or a dislike for our hosts? Where they're going, they don't need roads. Developed and published in Denmark by Flashbulb Games, this game tasks the player with building vehicles out of blocks that sure do look like the famous ones from another Danish company. We are confident that's just a coincidence! In any case, it was the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button that chose this physics-based vehicle construction sandbox for the episode, so Tom and Chris can't be blamed either way. With multiple game modes and the ability to toggle between third and first person, our hosts should have plenty to see and do during their hour, but will they have enough fun to want to return when the time is up? Watch for Yokai, defend Yorshiro. It took more than four years for Capcom to develop this action-strategy game, but it has finally been released! Like most of Capcom's newest titles, it runs off their proprietary RE Engine. Unlike those other titles, this one plays in alternating phases that shift between daily preparation and nightly action. Will the game loop prove more entertaining than the seemingly similar Orcs Must Die 3? Will the inspiration of Japanese folklore provide a more serious and steady foundation? Our hosts have just one hour to make a decision, what will it be this time? Let's find out if this path is one worth following! What do you think? Let us know! Surviving another alien world, but with one less dimension. For this episode, the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button has chosen the 2D sandbox RPG developed by TARO and published by Gamera Games. With no seeming relation to the tea or the turtle, this choice further surprised our hosts by being a PC exclusive. Usually this would spell doom for Tom, but the small demands of this retro-inspired game mean that it ran smoothly on his computer, which means it will certainly run on yours too! Take the look of a SNES era RPG and add the addictive qualities of Minecraft, then sprinkle in modern quality-of-life improvements and the result is what lays before you... but is it entertaining enough to compete with all the flashier options on Xbox Game Pass? Seeing things from a different perspective. The Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button has challenged our hosts to really use their noggins with this selection. Developed by Pillow Castle Games and formerly known as Museum of Simulation Technology, this first-person puzzle game is all about optical illusions and forced perspective. The mechanics can be deceptively described as picking things up and putting them down, but shifts in perspective mean the results of those seemingly minor interactions can have major consequences on the world. Puzzle games don't tend to run very long, so it will be interesting to see how far Tom and Chris can make it in their designated hour of gametime. Will euphoric eureka moments outweigh the time lost traveling in circles and scratching their heads in consternation? Let's find out if this surreal experience is worthy of your precious time! We once caught a fish this big! Randomly selected by the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button, this gone fishin' simulator was developed by Expansive Worlds, part of the Avalanche Studios Group. Speaking of expanding the group, Tom and Chris have brought along CJ of Player One Podcast for this episode. As a game developer himself, CJ will bring along a unique perspective when it's time to discuss the details of everyone's first hour angling those simulated fish. With only minimal real world fishing experience between them, Tom and Chris are bound to learn a few things as they play. Will it be enough to get them hooked? Is this technically even a game? Developed by Open Roads Team and published by Annapurna Interactive, this walking simulator was randomly selected by the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button. As a consequence, Tom and Chris must dedicate an hour of their lives to begin unraveling the mystery centered on a skeleton in grandma's closet. Thankfully the skeleton is not literal, though the closet is, and so are a bunch of drawers and armoires and other such places that one's grandparents may elect to stash their secrets. The franchise heads to ancient Egypt! This assassin sure does have a lot of creeds! There are so many, in fact, that the publisher gave up on numbering them. This particular entry is considered an action RPG and was developed by Ubisoft Montreal, though (to be fair) several of her sister studios had their hands in development as well. With a massive open environment to explore and tons of side missions to complete, our hosts will only just scratch the surface of its many offerings in their allocated hour. Will the first hour of the game showcase enough to get Tom and Chris invested in experiencing the rest? Tune in and find out if they think this slayer's doctrine is one worth following! The first two attempts clearly failed. Developed and published by Robot Entertainment, this fourth(!) entry in the action-tower defense franchise was randomly selected by the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button. Following their standard procedure, Tom and Chris must spend an hour behind the controls and then decide if they will continue playing afterwards. With Chris on the PC and Tom on the Xbox Series S, how divergent will their experiences be due to the genre? Will slaying countless hordes of orcs prove entertaining or exhausting? Will the multitude of levels and game modes provide enough variety to keep them both playing after the hour is up? Find out on this episode of 1H1D! What do you think? Let us know! Trade in your bullets for magic missiles. Chris is pleased that he and Tom were tasked with an atypical first-person shooter for this episode. Developed as the debut title of Ascendant Studios, former Dead Space and Call of Duty game designers have taken those gun-toting mechanics and transformed them into firing magical spells instead. Were they successful in the conversion or was the essence lost in translation? We know Chris must be a little biased, but perhaps that will just balance out Tom's distaste for tackling first person shooters with a controller. Each have played for an hour and now we find out how those expectations meet with reality. Give this episode a listen to reveal if this game is worth your time! What do you think? Let us know! Is this guy's head seriously a book? For this episode, the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button has chosen the unconventional puzzle adventure game developed by Russian indie developer duo Do My Best! Our hosts step into the shoes of Etienne Quist, a writer that has lost his ability to write as punishment for his crimes. In order to free himself from his shackles, Etienne must dive into several works of fiction and recover the marvelous items contained within them. Curiously, this ability to literally journey into books is a supernatural power that one of our hosts has always desired. Which host could that possibly be?
