TCW Podcast Episode 228 - PopCap Games   PopCap Games was initially overlooked by the larger gaming industry due to its focus on fun, well-designed, and polished casual games. Their first major hit, Bejeweled, became a consistent source of income, allowing PopCap to invest time in developing new titles. This led to the creation of Peggle, which helped solidify PopCap's reputation, particularly after developers at Valve became hooked on the game's deeper skill-based mechanics and puzzles. The success of Bejeweled and Peggle continued with their ports to the iPod and, eventually, the iPad, further expanding PopCap's popularity. This growth culminated in the release of Plants vs. Zombies, which debuted on PC before being adapted for iOS. The game's seamless touchscreen integration made it a standout app for the newly launched iPad. As the gaming industry evolved, PopCap struck a deal with EA, which acquired the company, leading to the departure of its founders over the following years.   Attack Retrieve Capture: https://alchetron.com/Attack-Retrieve-Capture Shariki Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMwGy1fv41g Play Dimond Mine: https://www.crazygames.com/game/diamond-mine Bejeweled: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvLtaf1PFVM Palm OS - PDA Gaming: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nfg4YIoYas TCW 122 - A Casual World Part 1: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/a-casual-world-part-1/ TCW 123 - A Casual World Part 2: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/a-casual-world-part-2/ Zuma Deluxe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwpuOhuVnnQ Alchemy Deluxe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p902uQ_y3r4 Play Alchemy Deluxe: https://archive.org/details/alchemy-deluxe Bookworm Deluxe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FA1NSyldUQ8 The Oral History of PopCap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwzxWLonObo Burnout 3 Takedown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6vHTQv9JHY Peggle Deluxe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlnieE-h6k8 Peggle Extreme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAKLiepJDrM Peggle Extreme (Steam - Free): https://store.steampowered.com/app/3483/Peggle_Extreme/ Bejeweled (iPod): https://www.youtube.com/shorts/7iHTM0ryWm0 Peggle (iPod): https://www.youtube.com/shorts/qhWSm0zNSrk Insaniquarium Deluxe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U04weIAra20 Plants VS Zombies (PC): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XENla8M3910 Plants VS Zombies (iPad): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvopYLzwb90 PopCap Games on Internet Archive: https://archive.org/search?query=creator%3A%22PopCap+Games%22   New episodes are on the 1st and 15th of every month!   TCW Email: feedback@theycreateworlds.com  Twitter: @tcwpodcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theycreateworlds Alex's Video Game History Blog: http://videogamehistorian.wordpress.com Alex's book, published Dec 2019, is available at CRC Press and at major on-line retailers: http://bit.ly/TCWBOOK1     Intro Music: Josh Woodward - Airplane Mode -  Music - "Airplane Mode" by Josh Woodward. We wrapped up the game talk with Mushrooms that Grow in the Woods, another Commodore 64 adventure filled with mazes, teleporting stones, and dangerous fungi. As usual that's not all—we share post Halloween anecdotes, from candy chaos to unexpected pumpkin costume contest winners. Believe it or not it's been one whole trip around the sun since we released the first ever episode of Indieventure! And to celebrate, we've opened up the mailbag once again to answer your listener questions. Ever wondered how we find out about exciting upcoming indies to talk about on the podcast, or which indie video game we'd most like to see get the tabletop treatment? Maybe you're curious as to our respective favourite games on the late lamented indie machine that was the Nintendo 3DS — or want to hear us go off-topic once more while we debate which Ace Attorney case would make the best stand-alone game? All this and more will be revealed, including an incredibly cursed final question that must be heard to be believed. This episode isn't really about any games in particular… don't worry though, here's a handy summary of the titles we touch on for all my list goblins out there! This episode is an opportunity to fill your earholes with some lovely (or not) discussions of Against the Storm, Boyfriend Dungeon, Braid, Citizen Sleeper, Control, Dredge, Gunman Clive, Harold Halibut, The Missing: JJ Macfield and the Island of Memories, Monster Prom, Paradise Killer, A Park Full of Cats, Peggle, Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One, Severed, Slice & Dice, Steamworld Heist, Still Wakes the Deep, Stray Cats in Cozy Town, ValiDate: Struggling Singles in Your Area, and Wilmot's Warehouse. And, in this episode's pre-GOTY round-up of what we've been playing lately, we take a trip down false-memory lane with UFO 50, an 8-bit console that never was; discuss whether inventive perspective-flipped dating sim The Crush House is being held back by a broken in-game economy; and reach a surprising consensus on recent body horror streaming hit Mouthwashing. We end as ever with our latest round of hyperfixations! Rebecca has been reading Jacqueline Wilson's Think Again, Rachel has a new reality TV obsession in The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, and Liam has gone further down the Resident Evil rabbit hole than even he ever expected to get with The Mercenaries 3D. Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! Find him on Instagram at @newbsmusic. Meanwhile, you can find us at indieventurepodcast.co.uk or wherever you listen to podcasts.

This week sees all three of us being extra excitable since — for the first time ever — we got to record an episode in-person! The lack of Discord delays and occasional internet outages really takes the energy up a notch, you'll no doubt be pleased to know. Since it's been the best part of a year since we were last able to get together in person, naturally the first thing we did when we were in the same room again was watch the Ace Attorney movie, which of course we have to discuss a bit before getting into today's main topic. The prestigious Indieventure Vault is back for its third consignment of the very best indie games we know! This time the selection criteria we settled on was indie game first loves: the very first indie game that each of us can remember being swept away by, quite possibly before we even knew what indie games were in relation to the wider games industry. Today's trio of vaultworthy games have the common factor of having been released in the span of less than a year between 2012-2013. Was this when indie games suddenly became more readily accessible thanks to the rise of digital storefronts? Or is this just a stark reminder that we're all now firmly in our early 30s? You decide as we each make our cases for the first indie game we ever fell in love with: Journey, the minimalist desert exploration adventure about coming to terms with impermanence (Rebecca); Hotline Miami, the maximalist introspection on ultraviolence as entertainment (Liam); and Proteus, the minimalist deserted island exploration walking sim about impermanence and introspection (Rachel). Liam also (jokingly, we think?!) suggests inducting Peggle into the Vault, which nearly leads to Rachel committing a hate crime. Moving on to hyperfixations! Rachel has been playing cute airborne exploration sim slash critter collection game Flock, which has easily cracked her already oversubscribed GOTY contenders list for 2024. Rebecca documents the recent significant moment in her long-term hyperfixation on Danganronpa when she finally finished the series' massive main story arc. And Liam has bought himself an unpronounceable retro handheld game console, which is double the fun because he gets to figure out how to get all his old games working on there and then actually play them again! Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! Find him on Instagram at @newbsmusic.

Press any Button: A Video Game Podcast

In this week's episode of Press any Button, Nicky and Eric embrace peggle-ing in an episode all about Peggle 2. Peggle 2 is a casual puzzle game developed by PopCap Games and published by Electronic Arts.  The goal of Peggle 2 is to clear all 25 orange pegs from the board with 10 balls to shoot from with a cannon at the top of the screen. Press Any Button hosts Nicky (a new gamer) and Eric (a lifetime gamer) are a married couple who both love video games. For every video game they will discuss its past (history of the game, developers story, and fun facts), present (game play, game review and strategy), and future (will there be a sequel?? A movie?)  BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE… Every game also comes with a challenge presented by the host that chose the game. If the challenge is not completed then whoever failed has to do a video game rap! So if you want to learn more about video games, hear some nerdy video game raps, or just have a good time this is the podcast for you. We try to cover all types of video games including: Retro and New video games Playstation, Nintendo, Xbox, Sega, and PC games Any and all genres including RPG, Simulation, Beat em up, platforming, mystery, first person shooter, sandbox, puzzle, action adventure, etc. Follow us on  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pressanybutton_podcast Credits: Nicky Smith Eric Luedtke Music by Mark Spurlock References: https://peggle.fandom.com/wiki/Peggle_2 https://www.factsnippet.com/site/facts-about-peggle.html https://youtu.be/QnCZs-TJkJ8?si=xkAUmgUc6HrctY7j https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peggle https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peggle_2 https://peggle.fandom.com/wiki/Peggle_Wiki

This week on The Exit: When Jason co-founded gaming start-up PopCap, never in his wildest dreams did he imagine exiting to EA for $650MM. The business started out as three guys creating games to sell back to the big gaming companies, but they quickly had to rethink that business model. The collapse of web games, combined with the dawn of Ecommerce in 2000, forced PopCap into selling their games online and business boomed. After 11 years, they decided to exit and found themselves at the center of a bidding war. Listen to find out why he believes the bidding war led to a successful exit for them. Jason founded PopCap Games with John Vechey and Brian Fiete in 2000, where they designed and produced games such as Bejeweled, Peggle, Zuma, and Plants vs Zombies. PopCap Games was sold to EA in 2011, and Jason is currently working on new games at Blue Wizard Digital, an indie game studio based in Comox, BC. One of his more recent video game projects is OLD MAN'S JOURNEY developed by Broken Rules based in Vienna, Austria.Old Man's Journey is a soul-searching adventure, tells a story of life, loss, and hope. Entrenched in a beautifully sunkissed and handcrafted world, the player embarks on a heartfelt journey interwoven with lighthearted and pressure-free puzzle solving. A visual narrative about life's precious moments, broken dreams, and changed plans, you uncover stories of the old man's life told through beautiful vignettes of his memories. The game was released in May of 2017 and is available for iOS devices, Android, Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4 and Steam. In this episode, serving as both composer and sound designer, SCNTFC talks about how he came to score this project, how he wanted to blur the lines between diegetic and non-diegetic music and sound, why he chose to record himself on instruments he wasn't the most proficient at playing. And how his music not only follows the titular old man, but ends up propelling him forward through the game's story.ANNOTATED TRACKS AND SEGMENTS03:03- How SCNTFC was hired for Old Man's Journey04:34- "Oceanside" - the music of the journey11:31 "Two Towers, Stonewall, The Bridge"OTHER TRACKS00:07 - "Carry Me Far"SOUNDTRACKThe original soundtrack was released on May 17, 2017.
