Very few footballers are able to say that they made their debut in the professional game aged just 15 years old but Ashley Chambers did just that when he played for Leicester City in a league cup tie. He also played for England at various youth levels but needed to leave Leicester in search of regular first team football. York City and Gary Mills provided that and the rest, as they say, is history. Ashley is cemented in York city folklore due to his massive part in the 2012 Wembley double success. Here Ashley looks back on that time at Bootham Crescent as well as his whole career in football. This interview was conducted by Dan Tait, edited and produced by James Charters.

If there was ever a poll to decide the best value for money York City player, Derek Hood, who cost the club £2000 from Hull City would certainly be up there. Over 300 appearances covering nearly every position on the pitch, Derek was in the side that were the first to achieve over 100 points as well as facing Liverpool in the FA Cup. Here Derek discusses his career from early beginnings as a youth player at West Brom to his love for playing at Bootham Crescent under the lights. This episode is sponsored by the Nearly departed app. The interview was conducted by Dan Tait, edited and produced by James Charters.
Welcome to a brand new series of York Hospital Ball, a series that goes through the decades starting with former striker Jimmy Seal covering the golden period of the 1970s where York City clinched promotion to the old Second Division. Jimmy signed from Barnsley and initially found goals hard to come by but would go on to form one of the most prolific strike partnerships in the club's history when Chris Jones joined him in attack. Here Jimmy reminisces about his time playing at Bootham Crescent as well as his famous goals against Manchester United and Arsenal. This episode is sponsored by Nearly Departed (App). The interview was conducted by Dan Tait, edited and produced by James Charters.
We look back on a classic FA Cup 1st Round game from Bootham Crescent, where City came from behind to steal a 3-2 win thanks to late goals from Richard Pacquette and Richard Brodie.Highlights of the game available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXEm4Zf8ZM4 Hosted on Acast. When avid supporter James Richardson finished University he probably didn't think his first employment would be as a low paid commercial assistant at York City. However, a short time later James would be involved in numerous aspects of the club which lead to things like making up players names in the matchday programme, discussing transfer targets with Alan Little to designing away shirts. From the highs of working at Bootham Crescent when they beat Manchester United to seeing the club sold for a pound in his office was certainly a rollercoaster. When Gary Mills came back to York City in 2016 he needed players to represent his passion and leadership on the pitch. Sean Newton epitomised everything the manager needed. Having followed him from Wrexham, Sean soon won supporters over with his performances and quality set pieces. Although York City were relegated to the Conference North Sean's association with the football club extended to six years including three clubman of year awards and man of the match in the FA Trophy win in 2017. Sean's time at Bootham Crescent wasn't all plain sailing with rumoured fall outs and he often divided opinions with supporters but here he speaks about his version of events and love for York City Football Club. This interview was conducted by Dan Tait and was edited by James Charters.
When John Ward left York City in March 1993, it was a crucial point in the season for the club in their pursuit of promotion. Appointing Alan Little, John Ward's assistant, a man with no previous managerial experience was a huge call. However, it 100% proved to be the right decision. From his first game in charge; a 5-1 win at Barnet, to winning promotion at Wembley to beating the likes of Manchester United and Everton, Alan is rightly remembered as one of the clubs greatest ever managers. Here he discusses all of those special moments during his time coaching and managing at Bootham Crescent. This podcast interview was conducted by Dan Tait, edited and produced by James Charters.
When Andy Leaning was advised to take on an apprenticeship in a trade rather than as a footballer he thought his chance of playing for York City had gone. However, it turned out to be a blessing as Andy built up skills and experience playing local mens football which led to a chance reserve team game at Bootham Crescent. The rest, as they say, is history as Andy quickly established himself as first choice and in his first full season twice faced the might of Liverpool in the FA Cup. Andy's career saw him move onto the likes of Sheffield United and Bristol City before becoming a successful goalkeeping coach. This podcast interview was conducted by Dan Tait, edited by James Charters and produced by Keith Lea.
When Denis Smith arrived on loan at York City in 1982 he was shocked at the lack of professionalism and poor standards he had become accustomed to during his stellar career at Stoke City. Accepting the position as player manager of the club Denis knew the size of the challenge but by the time he left for Sunderland in 1987 he had given York City supporters lasting memories that included being the first team to ever reach over 100 points, beating Arsenal in the FA Cup as well as memorable draws against Liverpool. Denis is one of York City's best ever managers and here he speaks exclusively about his time at Bootham Crescent. This interview is conducted by Dan Tait, produced by Keith Lea and edited by James Charters. If you enjoy these podcasts please consider donating via justgiving.com/yorkhospitalradio
Writer Daniel Gray has just released his excellent book 'The silence of the stands' which details his journey following football during the pandemic. Daniel grew up in York and speaks to us about his childhood following the Minstermen, his infamous purchase of one of turnstiles from Bootham Crescent before discussing his latest football book. This interview was conducted by Dan Tait, edited and produced by James Charters.
Many York City supporters credit John Ward as being one of the finest managers the club has ever had. That is a huge accolade but even more impressive considering he was only in charge for a relative short period and never a full season. However, after a lean end to the 1980s it was John Ward who laid the foundations for success in the 1990s transforming a team of perennial underachievers into promotion candidates helped hugely by the signing of Paul Barnes. Here John speaks about his time at Bootham Crescent including the difficulties in signing Paul but also his wider career in football; playing, managing and coaching. When Russ joined York City in January 2014 the brief was to help steer the club away from relegation but an incredible 17 game unbeaten run was formed and the club sneaked into the League Two play-offs. Sadly this trajectory couldn't be sustained and Russ ended his time at Bootham Crescent captain of the team that fell out of the football league two years later. Here he speaks in detail about his two spells with the minster men, what the club meant to him as well as recounting his wonder strike versus Morecambe in 2015. The interview also covers his wider career with Burton Albion, Cheltenham and Kidderminster Harriers who he played for and now manages. This episode is sponsored by N&E Plastering, was conducted by Dan Tait and edited/produced by James Charters.
Our latest episode features Rodney Rowe whose career started at his hometown club, Huddersfield Town. Despite a memorable goal and performance against Premier League side Wimbledon in the FA Cup, Rodney was often on the fringes and moved to York City in 1997 to secure first team football. A firm fan favourite, Rodney scored an audacious chip vs Preston North End over future team mate Bobby Mimms and went on to score a number of key goals to keep the club in the old Division Two. Here Rodney discusses his time at Bootham Crescent as well as his later career with Gillingham and Hull City. This episode is sponsored by Had-IT, was conducted by Dan Tait and was edited/produced by James Charters.
This weeks guest is part of a unique group of people to have played both professional football and cricket at the same time with Chris Marples serving Chesterfield and Derbyshire respectively in his early career. York City paid a record amount for a goalkeeper to bring him to Bootham Crescent in 1988 and his four years at the club saw him become a firm fans favourite. Here he discusses his time playing for the Minstermen as well as his wider career including an extraordinary FA Cup run with Emley in the late 90s. This podcast was conducted by Dan Tait, edited and produced by James Charters.
Our new series kicks off with Keith Houchen, a player whose career is never forgotten thanks to his famous diving header for Coventry City in their FA Cup win in 1987. It was his penalty in the FA Cup win over Arsenal that means his time at Bootham Crescent is also similarly cherished. Keith's career wasn't all plain sailing from being released as a young player at Crystal Palace, relegation with Orient, a move to Scunthorpe that wasn't working out but ultimately is a story of how hard work and self belief enabled Keith to play in the top flight of both English and Scottish football. When Michael Coulson signed for York City in the summer of 2012, the club was on the crest of a wave having won promotion but four years later, Michael's last season, they were spiralling back into non-league. During that time period Michael was a real fan favourite from his all-action displays and penchant for wonder goals and here he speaks about his time at Bootham Crescent as well as his wider career with Barnsley, Grimsby, St Johnstone and two spells with his home-town club, Scarborough. When York City were facing a second successive relegation in the 99/00 season that would have seen them drop out of the football league, manager Terry Dolan turned to Alan Fettis, a goalkeeper he originally brought over from Northern Ireland for Hull City. Fettis himself, was frustrated with lack of opportunities at Blackburn Rovers, and the signing proved to be an inspired move as Fettis kept 8 clean sheets in 13 games as the Minster men clawed their way to safety. The next two seasons saw Alan pick up Player of the Year at Bootham Crescent and here he speaks about his full career which included 25 caps for Northern Ireland, scoring twice outfield for Hull City and his eventual coaching career with Manchester United. This episode is sponsored by club historian and author Paul Bowser, has been conducted by Dan Tait and edited/produced by James Charters. Few York City players have immediately endeared themselves to supporters after one touch but Jamie Reed's immediate control of a ball that came out of the sky at Bolton in the FA Cup in January 2011 did just that. If that wasn't enough Reed scored against arch rivals Luton Town not long after and became a key player during his time at Bootham Crescent, scoring many crucial goals during a golden era for the club. Here Jamie discusses his career which took him from Wales to, Australia and England where his goal scoring exploits made him a cult hero at many clubs. Any past or future polls about York City's greatest ever strikers will inevitably have Paul Barnes in the starting XI. Signing for £50,000 back in 1992, Barnes scored on his debut against Shrewsbury Town and never looked back, netting 85 goals in 179 appearances. His goals helped the club get promoted in 1993, go close again in 1994 and cemented his hero status with two goals at Old Trafford when the club beat Manchester United 3-0 in the League Cup in 1995. In this episode Matt Crawley who works at Luton Town tells us how he started out as the stadium announcer. He's part of a double act that has it's own crowd chants and effects to play from their booth to get the players going. He's called promotion parties and historic matches...plus has had to prove to many people in the pub that he is the stadium announcer, by reading out random subs.Rich Hurst of West Brom and Alan Keegan of Man Utd are putting the questions again. There's another game of What's My Name with a very cheeky Paraguayan left back to get their tongue around.Plus a look at announcers on social where York City have paid a special tribute to Bootham Crescent.MUSIC: DistrictFour by Kevin McLeod

The 1990's was another eventful decade for York City with promotion achieved via the play-offs at the old Wembley Stadium in 1993, establishing a reputation for League Cup giant killing with wins over Manchester United and Everton before relegation back to the old Division 3 in 1999. Here, club legends Jon McCarthy, Nigel Pepper, Dean Kiely and Andy McMillan all give their insights into that period at Bootham Crescent. Interviews conducted by Dan Tait, edited/produced by Keith Lea and James Charters. Donations greatly received
It is staggering to think that Martin Foyle only had one full season in charge of York City but his time was eventful and in the main, a really successful time. From taking on a side faltering towards regionalised football, Martin kept the club up in 2009 but also got them to the FA Trophy Final before moulding the squad into a much stronger, slicker outfit that enjoyed a run to the FA Cup Third Round and the 2010 Play-off final. Here Martin reflects on his spell at Bootham Crescent, the impact he had on Richard Brodie, the reasons behind his exit early into the 2010-11 season, how he influenced the decision of his replacement and many more key insights. When Clayton Donaldson arrived at Bootham Crescent on a free transfer from Hull City few could have predicted the impact the striker would make. Not just notching an impressive 44 goals in 93 games, Clayton emerged as a real fan favourite with his raw pace and power giving optimism to supporters after two painful seasons. His partnership with Andy Bishop was the most lethal outside the football league and even when Bishop left in 2006 Donaldson stepped up to fill the void and contributed massively to York City getting into the playoffs. By this point he had already signed a pre contract agreement with Hibs but despite the eventual playoff defeat and protracted exit from the club Clayton remains popular amongst fans and this is Clayton's honest reflection on all of those key events during his time at the club.
