It's the best weekend in the football calendar: FA Cup Third Round weekend. History was made as sixth-tier Macclesfield FC stunned defending holders Crystal Palace. They weren't alone—Everton, Spurs, Bournemouth, Manchester United, and Nottingham Forest all crashed out as well. Manchester City ran up a 10-goal rout and even handed the gate receipts back to Exeter City. Alex James and Simon Bajkowski look back at Manchester City's staggering 10-1 win against Exeter in the FA Cup Third Round. With many City graduates playing in the high-scoring game, Si argues that the development of youngsters at the Etihad is "no longer a stick to beat" City with. They also look tentatively ahead to the Manchester derby and respond to the online chatter around Oscar Bobb.
It was a lovely little weekend in Merseyside as they Lads ensured they were in the hat for the next round of the FA Cup with a penalty shootout win over Everton on our first visit to the Hill Dickinson Stadium. An Enzo Lee Fee beauty got us on our way, before a controversional penalty decision took us to extra-time, and then ultimately penalties. Big Robin Roefs ensured we didn't concede in the shootout, though, and we sailed through with relative ease with Luke O'Nien scoring the winning spot kick. Excellent! Enjoyed the episode? AFC Bournemouth's recent record against Newcastle United has been remarkable, not losing in six games - some Mags even think the sequence of results is even conspiratorial! However the recent form of Eddie Howe's side has improved recently, rising to sixth in the Premier League, and with a keenness to ensure his side retain their momentum, the former Cherries gaffa will be wanting to end the Geordies sorry run with victory over Andoni Iraola's side. We all spend a lot of time lamenting the cynical side of the modern game, but if there's an antidote, it's the weekend ahead of us. The FA Cup Third Round Proper is one for the romantics: the smallest clubs in the land can share a pitch with the biggest, and both sides can live a different football life for a day.Moss Rose was built in 1891 for Macclesfield Town, which was would-up in 2020 amid financial troubles. A phoenix club was born in the ashes and has risen from the ninth tier of the English football pyramid (the North West Counties Football League) to the sixth (the National League North) in next-to-no time. Now they've got their biggest match of the year on Saturday, as FA Cup holders and Premier League stalwarts Crystal Palace will come to a small ground south of Manchester to battle the Silkmen. In fact, says this week's guest, it's one of the biggest days in the combined history of Macclesfield Town and Macclesfield F.C. That guest is James Walker of The Silkmen News, a podcast and newsletter, and he also explained how new owner Robert Smethurst righted the ship with the help of his friend Robbie Savage after buying up the assets in an online liquidation sale. We also touched on how Wayne Rooney's brother, John, is doing this season having replaced Savage as manager having helped the club win promotion how non-league football is thriving these days, and how Macclesfield got their nickname. For our U.S. listeners, you can catch every FA Cup match this season on ESPN+Check out The Silkmen News on Spotify and Substack, and get more sharp coverage of the world's game at TheFootballWeekend.com ↗️ Hosted on Acast. Ahead of the FA Cup Third Round clash on 10 January 2026, we turn our attention to a daunting test as Sheffield Wednesday welcome Brentford to Hillsborough. Can the Owls finally put an end to their miserable run of form and take a giant (and possibly unexpected) leap forward in the FA Cup? Or will Premier League quality once again prove too much against our top-flight rivals?Host Dan Fudge is joined by Billy The Bee from the excellent Beesotted Podcast to break down the matchup, assess Wednesday's slim chances (let's be honest), and get the opposition view from a Brentford perspective.Expect honest analysis, gallows humour, FA Cup romance (maybe), and a deep dive into whether Sheffield Wednesday can shock the odds—or whether this cup run is over before it's really begun.
At the start of the sixth month of the football season, the FA Cup finally welcomes the addition of the Premier League teams into the competition. The worlds oldest cup competition begins in earnest now that the entire footballing pyramid is involved. Four match ups this weekend see EPL teams take on another. Which of those sides might be upset to not progress to the next round? Wrexham will welcome Nottingham Forest to the Racecourse Ground, can the upstart championship side keep their FA Cup dream alive? And its the battle of the 'Cities' as Manchester City welcome Exeter City to the Etihad. Check out RCR's preview of the third round of the FA Cup. The third consecutive new ground the Lads will visit this week, Sunderland's focus turns to the FA Cup as we visit Everton in the third round. It's been an up and down season at the Hill Dickinson so far, but as one of our toughest opponents this season, it certainly isn't an easy task to win there. But what can we expect from a depleted Toffees side this Saturday? To let us know, the excellent Paul from Falcon Blues TV joins us to chat. Enjoyed the episode? The glamour tie of the FA Cup Third Round is ARSENAL against MANCHESTER UNITED on Sunday, but this stage is all about the clubs who tend to get less ink.The beauty of the world's oldest cup competition is that it offers TAMWORTH FOOTBALL CLUB from the National League, England's fifth tier, the chance to host TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR of the Premier League at their 4,000-capacity stadium, The Lamb Ground. That's the first match we've chosen to highlight from this weekend's fixtures with the help of Jonathan Day, host of The Tamworth F.C. Social. Then we move to MILLWALL, the club from South East London that for all their fame from depictions in film and TV have rarely featured in England's top flight. They don't look like winning promotion from the Championship this year, either—they're 14th—but what would an FA Cup run mean to the Lions? Omer Ronayne of That Millwall Podcast joins to offer a view into second-tier life, and to preview their tie with fellow Londoners DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE on Monday.Soon enough, we'll know who might be this season's Maidstone United, who made it to the Fifth Round in 2024 as a sixth-tier outfit. That's where the Stones were beaten by Coventry City, who came within an inch of defeating Manchester United at Wembley in the semifinal. In fact, I'm still not entirely convinced that Haji Wright was offside…If you're enjoying The Football Weekend, please leave us a rating and review! It will help spread the good word. A few techie issues this week but a bumper show no less. We start off with Phil Annets. Two hats as we look at the double representatives in the FA Cup Third Round and the last 32 clubs in the FA Vase as that hits round 4. Then a lovely tale of one of those making history in the FA Vase and hopefully likely to beat the weather this weekend with a 3G pitch. Roger Hudd wasn't around when the club in its oldest form was born but he was one of a handful of lads who started the club it later merged with and bears its name now. He's been a player, manager and now a proud Chairman of a club with some great history and he is hoping to make even more at Roman Glass St George this weekend Jon Couch is literally our roving reporter this week on his way back from Tamworth's pre-FA Cup Press Conference and helps round up the rest of the non league news of the week and what we can read in this weekend's Non League Paper.

Welcome back to 'It's All Kicking Off!' - for our Weekend Preview edition. It's FA Cup third round weekend across the country, with David vs Goliath clashes aplenty, and Ian is joined by guest co-host Nathan Salt to preview the best of the action. Accrington Stanley head to Anfield, Salford travel to Manchester City, Morecambe head to Chelsea, and Bromley go to Newcastle in some of the standout mismatches - but which is most likely to result in an upset? While in most ties the giants are at home, one exception is as Spurs head to Tamworth. Will the National League team's artificial pitch prove a problem for the Lilywhites? Meanwhile in the most high profile fixture, Manchester United face Arsenal at the Emirates. They do so under the cloud of potentially having to sell Kobbie Mainoo to satisfy PSR - Nathan gives his take on whether it would really come to that? A typically unpredictable and reactive window has resulted in this week's podcast arriving a little later than usually expected. However, we quickly wrap up all the key action from the FA Cup Third Round. Big performances from Nathan Baxter, Dan Grimshaw and Max O'Leary helped Bolton, Blackpool and Bristol City take Premier League sides to respective replays on home soil, Lucas Covolan stayed firm to see Maidstone through to the Fourth Round for the first time since their 1992 reformation, and Cam Dawson saved two penalties inside the opening ten minutes as Sheffield Wednesday saw off Cardiff. Meanwhile, GKs On Their Way rolls on with a further four moves taking place. Special mention to Jed Steer for securing a short-term contract with Peterborough.
