Hillary first met Huma Abedin over 25 years ago when Huma, still in college, accepted a White House internship in the Office of the First Lady. Throughout their professional partnership, Huma stayed behind the scenes. In her new memoir, Both/And: A Life in Many Worlds, she steps forward to share her own story—from her childhood as the American-born daughter of Indian and Pakistani parents living in Saudi Arabia to her coming of age in Washington, D.C., and her personal and political journey to the present. Kal Penn and Huma Abedin had vastly different journeys into the world of American politics. As a collegiate-level White House intern during Hillary Clinton's time as the first lady, Abedin never predicted she'd go on to witness some of the most crucial moments in America's modern political history; including Clinton's watershed nomination as the first female candidate for president. Penn, too, has both witnessed and shaped political history as a liaison for the Obama administration—something that he, a prominent Hollywood actor who'd experienced countless discriminations in the entertainment industry, never saw coming. While their foray into politics were poles apart, Abedin and Penn do share a similar vision of the American Dream molded by their immigrant families. In their own professional endeavors—from Penn's shift to politics to Abedin's powerful tenure as Hillary Clinton's right-hand woman—they've done more than just manifest this dream. Instead, they've disrupted it's very core. Together at INFORUM, Huma Abedin and Kal Penn will bring to life the remarkable experiences they've detailed in their new memoirs, Both/And and You Can't Be Serious, respectively. In doing so, they will provide the audience with more than just powerful insights toward the meaning of the American Dream—instead, they'll challenge its “one size fits all” narrative in order to reconstruct its meaning for a more inclusive future. In this PR Unmasked exclusive, Muddassar Ahmed sits down with Huma Abedin, the Chief of Staff for Hillary Clinton, to discuss her personal journey on the frontline of American politics. Abedin has been Clinton's right-hand woman for over two decades. Initially, she began her career as an intern in the White House, later serving as a personal advisor to Clinton during her successful campaign to become the New York Senator. She also worked for both of Clinton's presidential campaigns: in 2008 when Clinton lost the Democratic nomination to Barack Obama, and in 2016 when she won the nomination – the first woman to do so – later losing to Donald Trump. After being behind the scenes for many years, Abedin is finally telling her side of the story with her memoir, “Both/And: A Life in Many Worlds”. In this episode we are also joined by politicians and campaigners from Unitas' network
Crabb and Sales have a nervous chuckle about an Adele interview bungle and discuss how to prepare for a celebrity encounter. They spend too long talking about Taylor Swift's red scarf, and Leigh stuns Annabel yet again by revealing she has never heard of a non-fungible token. Huma Abedin, former Vice-Chair of Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign for President as well as Deputy Chief of Staff during her time as Secretary of State and Anthony Weiner's ex-wife, has had a front-row seat to some of the biggest, and most tragic, political stories in recent history. She joined Molly Jong-Fast on this bonus episode of The New Abnormal to talk about those experiences in detail as well as the stories in her new book Both/And: A Life in Many Worlds. From Hillary Clinton's time in the White House as the first lady to her most recent presidential run, Huma Abedin has walked briskly behind. She's been called Hillary's shadow and right-hand woman. She quickly became a trusted aide – although firmly in the background. But Abedin's life came crashing into the spotlight during her now estranged husband's sexting scandal. Her marriage to former New York Rep. Anthony Weiner was marked by public scrutiny and betrayal. All the while, she was trying to work behind the scenes to elect the first woman president. Now, she steps out from behind the scenes, this time on her own terms in her new memoir, Both/And: A Life in Many Worlds. We talk to Abedin about her new memoir. Want to support 1A? In her new memoir, “Both/And: A Life in Many Worlds,” Huma Abedin writes about her Muslim faith, her years working alongside Hillary Clinton and, of course, her relationship with her estranged husband, the former Democratic Representative Anthony Weiner. On this week's podcast, Abedin says that writing the book was “the most therapeutic thing I could have possibly done,” and that writing about her marriage and its time in the tabloids gave her perspective.“Now that I am on the other side, I can say with confidence: I don't think what I went through is all that singular,” she says. “What's different is that I had to go through it on the front page of the news. So I know there is a sisterhood and brotherhood of people out there in the world that have had to endure betrayal and have had to figure out how to move on with their lives. And these are the conversations that I still am called into; the people who stop me on the street and ask me a simple question: ‘When does it stop hurting?' ‘Should I stay?' ‘When do I leave?'”Gary Shteyngart visits the podcast to discuss his new novel, “Our Country Friends,” about seven friends (and one nemesis) spending time together in one Hudson Valley property during the early months of the pandemic. The novel's drama, Shteyngart says, comes from people confronting their “deepest selves,” as Chekhov's characters did when they left Moscow for rural surroundings.“When you're stuck in the countryside, no matter where you are, life just goes so much slower than it does in the city, and you're able to really begin to think about your place in the world,” Shteyngart says. “There's definitely a feeling of time slowing down and you're able to ascertain your true relationships. If you love someone, you love them more in the country. If you hate them, you hate them more in the country. Everything is turned up to 11.”Also on this week's episode, Tina Jordan looks back at Book Review history as it celebrates its 125th anniversary; Elizabeth Harris has news from the publishing world; and Dave Kim and Sarah Lyall talk about what they're reading. Pamela Paul is the host. Here are the books discussed in this week's “What We're Reading”:“Man in the Holocene” by Max Frisch“A Wrinkle in Time” by Madeleine L'Engle“Perfect Little Children” by Sophie Hannah“The Flight Attendant” by Chris Bohjalian
