BREAKING - TOP NEWS STORIES OF THE WEEK:
Some of the most interesting conversations I've had on this show are the ones where I'm actually talking to a peer — someone who's been doing this work at the same time I have, in the same city, navigating the same chaos. That's this episode.Deirdre Walsh has been covering Capitol Hill since 2006 — CNN first, then NPR, now NOTUS, where she's helping lead a newsroom that is genuinely doing something different. I've known Deirdre for years, and this is one of those conversations where I kept thinking: more people should hear this.We got into a lot of things. How being a parent changed the stories she pitched — when Congress was debating a social media bill and she was simultaneously fighting her teenager about Discord, she knew that story from the inside in a way no briefing book could give her. The camaraderie of the Capitol Hill press corps — the informal COVID pool, the shared files, the reporter-to-reporter trust that outsiders almost never see. The shrinking number of members she can trust not to spin her, and why that matters more than it might seem. And a few things that surprised even me. There is a pickleball court on the fifth floor of the Dirksen Senate Office Building. Ted Cruz plays basketball there. Kirsten Gillibrand plays tennis. The Pickleball Caucus has converted it twice a week. I did not know this. But the story I keep thinking about is the STOCK Act loophole she cracked in 2012. She covered the bill for months. A source offhandedly mentioned that the House and Senate were interpreting the rules differently. She started pulling on that thread with her colleague Dana Bash. What they found: one chamber's interpretation let congressional spouses trade on insider knowledge without ever having to disclose it. They reported it. Congress closed the loophole a few days later. “You always dream of making Congress react to your reporting,” she said. That's the dream and she lived it.The advice she carries from her first job — watching Judy Woodruff prepare — is simple: do the work you can control. Be ready. Then adjust. That one lands. Dave Rubin of "The Rubin Report" talks about Fox News' Peter Doocy busting out laughing live on-air when Senator John Kennedy gave his hilarious reaction to Kamala Harris advocating for Democrats to try to abolish the electoral college and pack the Supreme Court to give the Democratic Party more political power; CNN's Dana Bash pointing out Pete Buttigieg's hypocrisy live on-air about his outrage over Republican redistricting plans; the New York Times Lulu Garcia-Navarro looking visibly shocked by Graham Platner doubling down on supporting armed political violence to fight what he perceives as fascism; Zohran Mamdani trying to do damage control after Citadel CEO Ken Griffin responded to Mamdani's tax the rich stunt by pulling some of his investment plans for NYC and doubling down on Miami instead; the "Real Time with Bill Maher" crowd going eerily silent while Maher ripped into the Democratic Party for fanning the flames of antisemitism and the hatred of Israel; Elon Musk's viral reaction to the violent chants at the anti-Unite the Kingdom rally that called for Tommy Robinson to be murdered like Charlie Kirk; and much more. The White House Correspondents' Dinner last weekend became the site of the third failed attempt to assassinate President Donald Trump. “I remember the feeling was very similar to when it was clear that the House had been invaded on January 6, 2021,” Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., who was in attendance, tells The Intercept Briefing. “Everybody was afraid that somebody had come in with an AR-15 or something like that.”This week on the podcast, host Akela Lacy speaks to Raskin about his experience at the dinner and later being asked by CNN's Dana Bash about whether he's thinking twice about his “heated rhetoric” toward Trump. “It was curious that, in the wake of this terrible episode, that she would try to equate the way that Democrats talk and the way that President Trump talks,” says Raskin. “He calls people crazy, insane. He calls people evil, wicked. He will buttonhole reporters and tell them that they're stupid, they're ugly. ... But we try to keep it at the level of policies and their actions.” Some examples, which Raskin discusses, is his forthcoming investigation into Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner's role in the administration and conflicts of interest, and his fight in Congress to stop the reauthorization of warrantless surveillance on Americans. After this latest assassination attempt on Trump's life, claims that it was staged flooded the internet, from comments section to social media posts to videos of influencers dissecting alleged evidence.“We are so conditioned to distrust what we are being told by authorities that people immediately began concocting conspiracy theories about it even before we even knew what had happened. Whether it was a shooting or just dishes breaking,” says journalist Mike Rothschild. He's the author of “The Storm is Upon Us,” the first complete book on the QAnon conspiracy movement, and more recently, a 200-year history of conspiracy theories called “Jewish Space Lasers.”Rothschild joins Lacy to unpack the growing world of conspiracy theories that question whether the multiple assassination attempts against Trump were staged. They also dive into other conspiracy theories currently capturing the public imagination, such as the dead and missing scientists and a wildfire in Georgia. “This is one of our more fun and disturbing interviews,” says Lacy. For more, listen to the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen.Keep our investigations free and fearless at theintercept.com/join. The boys discuss the very, very real assassination attempt at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Many people are saying this could have been a false flag in order to manufacture consent for Trump's White House ballroom, and the coincidences keep piling up! Dana Bash capitulates to right-wing framing when she asks if this happened because Democrats say “Trump is bad for the country,” prompting the HITO boys to dissect the double standard between right-wing criticism of Democrats and vice versa. Don Lemon's rebuttal to the press briefing gets a full look here, including a pointed critique of CNN's Dana Bash and the network's habit of false equivalence when covering Democratic opposition to the Trump administration. The Jimmy Kimmel controversy takes center stage after Kimmel's mock White House Correspondents' Dinner joke about Melania Trump drew condemnation from both Melania and Donald Trump, who called for ABC and Disney to fire Kimmel immediately. Karl Rove, famously nicknamed "Turd Blossom" by George W. Bush, weighs in with a surprisingly measured take. King Charles and Queen Camilla's visit to Washington gets scrutinized, with Steve Schmidt of the Lincoln Project raising serious concerns about normalizing a visit to a White House responsible for global economic instability and an escalating conflict with Iran. Prince Andrew's connection to the Epstein files adds another layer to questions about the timing of the royal visit.Tucker Carlson as the 2028 Republican frontrunner and Candace Owens' influence on young voters also come up. Hawk lays out recent polling showing 80 percent of Democratic voters now hold negative views of Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli government, and the Israeli military, with that number rising to 90 percent among Democrats aged 18 to 42. Republicans in that same age group are approaching 60 percent negative. Despite this, a DNC non-binding resolution to reject AIPAC money specifically failed to pass. AIPAC spent roughly 2.5 million dollars against Tom Malinowski in New Jersey simply for suggesting military aid to Israel should have conditions, a clear warning shot to every Democrat in the country. Hawk also calls out establishment Democrats for their decade-long addiction to incremental change rhetoric while Donald Trump has spent 15 months remaking the country by simply doing it. Democrats are leaving Hassan Piker's core audience, voters under 30, completely uncontested while refusing to go anywhere near the podcasts and platforms where those voters actually live. Take a week off only for ICE to execute another person in Minneapolis. Topics for the show: The media may finally be waking up and starting to do their job. Dana Bash pressed Greg Bovino on the murder for Alex Pretti and it did not go well for Bovino Full Interview Bovino did so poorly on the Bash interview, he scrambled to do a press conference that resulted in him also being pressed by the media and him having to quickly leave Full Press Conference Also, turns out what we predicted was right and Bovino's claim about the man they were after was also full of lies as well DHS and the Trump administration continue to use abuser language "Just do what we say. You're making us hurt you" As a Black person it's okay to have conflicting feelings right now as we watch white people and the media finally come to the realization of what the government and law enforcement does but that it took two white people to be killed instead of listening when this was happening to black people It's not just awaken at home but we're watching foreign leaders also realize that it's time for a change. On Monday's Mark Levin Show, the Democratic Party continues to strive to link President Trump to the Epstein case. Unfortunately, no details are being revealed because of the case's sensitive nature, not due to any attempt to hide information by Trump. It is impossible to force the grand jury to reveal this information, as that would infringe upon the privacy rights that are fundamental to every case during its jurisdiction. These so-called influencers are promoting the Epstein issue as a significant concern, yet a CNN poll conducted by Harry Enten shows that interest in the Epstein matter has waned considerably. in addition, we need to exercise extreme caution regarding whom we place our trust in moving forward, as there are numerous backstabbers, particularly when it involves attacking Trump. Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene serves as a prime example - many admired her, but the tables have turned as she is a deceitful and sleazy politician. Do we truly want individuals like her to represent us? Absolutely not. This is precisely why she is experiencing a significant decline in support due to her abhorrent actions, and yet she has the nerve to assert that she leads MAGA, which is utterly embarrassing. Also, Washington D.C is getting more dangerous. Just like in NYC and in California, crime is just as bad in Washington D.C.. Trump has a plan to help combat the crime that has been present and affecting the community. Moreover, individuals such as Sen Bernie Sanders pose a significant threat, and it is disheartening to see someone like Dana Bash fawning over Sanders, which is likely contributing to her declining ratings. Sanders endorses the actions of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, supports Zohran Mamdani's campaign for Mayor of NYC, and advocates for the erosion of our freedoms through Socialism and Marxism. Lastly, Benjamin Netanyahu isn't going to stop destroying Hamas, until Gaza is free of them. Netanyahu is determined to release all the hostages, and will not stop until they are all home and safe.
