AudioFile's Kendra Winchester and host Jo Reed discuss how narrator Ailsa Piper evokes the stark Australian Outback in her performance of this captivating novel, shortlisted for the Booker Prize. To escape her busy life in the city, a middle-aged woman visits a small religious community for peace and quiet. Years later, she returns to the community, this time for good. But not long after she joins the nuns in their daily life, a plague of mice descends upon the entire state. As the mice invade every nook and cranny of the nuns' home, Piper conveys all of the eeriness of the event. “Mice — whatever it means to you.“   Chatter rolls with Claude, David, Jamie, and Torie.  They break down the CAPs resurgence and a great 2018 moment — off the ice and in the water.  They debate what's behind the  resurgence of brick and mortar book stores.   Award winning author Charlotte Wood zooms in from down under to share “Stone Yard Devotional.”  Released in Australia in 2023 and a Booker Prize finalist in '24, Wood tells the story of a disillusioned conservationist who moves into a convent.  Beautifully spare, it's “extraordinary” as WashPost critic Ron Charles said.  And it makes you work — a good thing!

We have spoken to all of the Booker Shortlisted authors here at Read On, many on the days leading up to, or in one case the day of, the award ceremony, far too soon to get them onto a regular episode of the show. So here, ahead of the ceremony tonight, is a supercut of all six interviews featuring Percival Everett, Samantha Harvey, Yael van der Wouden, Charlotte Wood, Rachel Kushner and Anne Michaels.  We'll have all of the interviews, uncut, on future editions of Read On. The image showcases six book covers from the Booker shortlist 2024 James by Percival Everett - The cover features bold typography with a striking orange background. A small illustrated figure appears at the bottom, rowing a boat. Orbital by Samantha Harvey - This cover has a cosmic theme with abstract celestial shapes in vibrant colours against a dark background, resembling planets or bubbles in space. Creation Lake by Rachel Kushner - The cover uses bold, playful typography with red and yellow text. An upside-down black-and-white photograph of a woman wearing sunglasses adds a surreal element. Held by Anne Michaels - The cover is minimalist and grayscale, with the word "Held" repeated multiple times vertically. A small orange dot pattern adds subtle colour. The Safe Keep by Yael Van Der Wouden - This cover depicts an interior scene, looking into a room with an open door, hinting at themes of mystery or domesticity. Stone Yard Devotional by Charlotte Wood - The cover shows a dilapidated room with peeling walls and sunlight filtering in, suggesting an exploration of decay or solitude.

Charlotte and I talk about the themes that come up in her work, how her craft has changed over the course of her career, why it's so important to her to not over explain to the reader and of course, her favourite Australian fiction writers.LinksStone Yard Devotional - Charlotte WoodThe Weekend - Charlotte WoodThe Natural Way of Things - Charlotte WoodThe Writers Room - Charlotte WoodThe Slap - Christos TsiolkasThe Golden Age - Joan LondonThe Good Parents - Joan LondonThe Conversion - Amanda LohreyCharlotte Wood's Substack - charlottewood.substack.comcharlottewoodauthor.com.auNot Too Busy To Write on Substack - pennywincer.substack.com

A group of mums called Mothers' Manifesto are on day three of a five-day hunger strike in front of Parliament. They're trying to draw attention to food insecurity and the plight of mums who have to go without food to ensure their children can eat. Today they're meeting MPs to campaign for universal free school meals. Organiser Emma Hopkins tells Emma Barnett what they'll be asking for.A former dancer has brought a legal case against her performing arts school alleging verbal and emotional abuse in the form of body shaming, along with allegations that the school had failed in its duty of care to her as a pupil. Last month, the case was settled out of court, and she received a pay-out, although the school did not admit liability. Her lawyer believes this successful claim is the first time a dancer has taken a dance school to court over body shaming. The woman and her lawyer speak to Emma about what happened. The woman has a court order in place to keep her anonymous, so we are not naming her. In recent years, maximalism has been all the rage in the interior design world. Patterns on patterns and riotous colours. But what are the pros and cons of adding personality to your home? Pottery artist, Mary Rose Young and Kate Sandhu, interiors influencer and founder of Kate Sandhu Renovation, join Emma to discuss.Charlotte Wood's latest novel, Stone Yard Devotional, is set in a small convent hidden in the stark plains of the Australian outback. The main character is a middle-aged woman who takes refuge with the nuns as she grieves the loss of her parents. Charlotte joins Emma to talk about the inspiration for this book and what happened when, as she was writing it, she and her two sisters were all diagnosed with breast cancer. (This is too tough) Sliced so finely, you have to summon your inner Japanese chef. It must be fine, delicate, filigree. 2. Fennel 1/3 bulb Sliced very finely. I learnt this from Bill's (the Aussie /Sydney chef) in London. I think the addition of fennel is where the magic happens. 3. A lot of coriander. Chopped up. 1/2 bunch. More. Go crazy. Mint is a lovely addition or substitute if cori not in season. 4. Chopped celery. 1-2 sticks 5.A handful of currants. 6. Teaspoon of orange rind. 7. Vinaigrette. You can use Praise French dressing. (Perfect for this dish) Fiddle with the quantities. You can't go wrong. We eat it all the time! The trick is to go very fine with all shredding. Pharmacy in a Bowl. Charlotte Wood's recipe for lentil soupIngredients Olive oil 5 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2 small red chillies, finely chopped 1 brown onion, finely chopped 1 stick celery, finely chopped 1 leek, finely chopped ¼ white cabbage, finely chopped 1 red capsicum, roughly chopped 3 carrots, roughly chopped 3 litres chicken stock 1 head broccoli, roughly chopped 1 can tomatoes in juice 1 cup French-style (‘blue') lentils Salt & pepper Parmesan cheese, grated Method 1. Fry the garlic, onion, chilli, celery, leek, cabbage, capsicum and carrots in batches until well browned. 2. Put the chicken stock in a big pot on the stove and bring to the boil, tossing in all the sautéed ingredients. 3. Add broccoli and tomatoes, and simmer till all vegetables are tender. 4. Retaining stock, remove vegetables with a slotted spoon and puree in a food processor or blender until smooth (or roughly blended, depending on how rustic you like your texture). 5. Return pureed vegetables to stock and add lentils. Simmer for about 15 – 20 minutes or until lentils are tender (more if you want them falling apart). Season well with salt and pepper. 6. Serve with a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. With the help of the elves, Charlotte's founding mission was to revive the lost art of calligraphy for a new generation and create remarkable works of art in the form of letters, so that every child can feel as though Father Christmas is speaking directly to them.  Since founding her enchanting business, Polar Post has gone from strength to strength, but with the many highs on her Christmas journey so far, have also come many lows. Here, Charlotte bares her soul, sharing her early struggles with school, and how Polar Post actually sprung from a place of darkness, when she was battling postnatal depression. Charlotte also shares her advice when coping with guilt as a working mother, dealing with copying, working with charities, and the power creativity has in turning your world “from grey to technicolour”. Her creations are a labour of love that sprinkle magic on our doormats, up chimneys and under our Christmas trees, year on year. All you have to do is believe.
